There is much greater depth to being salt and light when we draw out the other connected foundational elements- water and fire. These may be implicit in these verses in Matthew and in the context of the culture being spoken to but they are very explicitly dealt with throughout scripture in other places. We are told to be salt and light to the world. This episode breaks down many different aspects of what this means, from historical and cultural practices to metaphorical meaning. Like much of scripture, the Sermon on the Mount is full of passages that hold multiple meanings at the same time. It's very much a both/and sermon more than an either/or. Throughout the Bible, God uses nations and rulers for His purposes. He calls them His servants, His staff, and similar descriptions. Romans 13 says the ruling authorities are placed in their positions by God and carry out His purposes. Daniel's story is another example of a Christian in government so it is the logical next place to stop. I get into that and compare with Joseph a bit more then get into Daniel's visions. I am not getting into eschatology but rather looking at the overall view of God's presentation of the kingdom of man vs Kingdom of God. It's time to look at some very direct examples of a biblical view of both anarchy and statism. Judges tells of a time when there was no king or government and people "did what was right in their own eyes". The kings that followed in the time of monarchy paint the picture of what it looks like to have a centralized government. God gives very direct commentary on this and we will look at the results of each system. God lays out how a society should be structured in Mosaic Law. There is no centralized government. There are no victimless crimes. There is no national military or police force of any kind. The principles are largely libertarian with restorative justice the focus over retributive justice. Joseph is one of the few examples we have a someone who follows God loyally and is also a government official. As we continue to look into the theology of obedience and the relationship between the Christian and the state, this provides a great example of direct involvement. Nimrod appears to be the first king referred to in scripture and Babel, the city he founded, is likely the first government  spoken of in scripture. Neither have very positive connotations but that's the point of this season. I get into the associations between Nimrod, his name, and his role and well as the motivations behind the Tower and the city of Babel itself. God says that if a man murders another man then by another man's hands will his own blood be shed. Some say this establishes the death penalty. Some would say it establishes government as a whole. Secular religion doesn't overtly follow a god or deity and thus seems to be a contradiction in terms. This is the foundation of the theology of obedience, both to God and the governing authorities. I use scripture as well as some extra biblical sources to lay out the Christian argument for why the State is not something Christians should be involved with, how the Adversary is connected, what it means to be light in a world of darkness, how to obey both God and the governing authorities, Christian Agorism, and much more. There is a big difference between submit and support, between God using an institution and desiring us to be involved with an institution, between not owing taxes and respect and illegally withholding taxes and unlovingly being disrespectful. Humanity has gone through 4 great Ages and is now entering its 5th. These have been the Age of Survival, the Age of Religion, the Age of Empire, the Age of Economics, and now the Age of Science. I apply the frameworks, patterns, and parallels previously covered and overlay them all on top of each other, inserting them into this framework of the Ages of Man. It paints a great macro picture of our evolution as society but more importantly it helps explain where we are and what we can do about it. There are a great many social cycle theories out there and this is an introduction to many of the most relevant for our time and this current series. I cover Khaldun, Tonnies, Durkheim, Sarkar, Sorokin, W. H. Smyth, Strauss and Howe, the Bible, Kaczynski, and McLuhan. I'm drawing out their views specifically on the cycles that societies go through. They are approached from various angles and various time frames and at this point are slightly disparate. Wrapping up this series on the parallels between the Reformation and modern shifts, this episode focuses on the present and future juxtaposed to the Reformation and the 30 Years War. When viewed from a more immaterial, ideational, and audible world view, in light of fifth generation warfare, we can see that WWIII is already happening. Fifth Generation Warfare is all about information and perception, controlling the media and the narrative in order to control the population. The West can be thought of as a culture, a conspiratorial movement, allied countries, or many other frameworks. I find it helpful to take a classic view of the gods as being regional, steering people groups and nations, and overlaying this framework onto the concept of the West. Whether you take this literally as spiritual warfare on a grand scale or philosophically as a way to embody this immaterial concept, it really helps to frame the how and why behind current events. This is not focused on theory but on history.
