Joy Pinto lives for the "audience of one" every day--she lives for Christ. At 48 Joy was diagnosed with stage 3 colon cancer. As she faced her painful illness and mortality, her faith was tested in a way she would never change. One day Joy was in bed for 17 hours and she asked God when the "fire" would be over. God responded, "When you can dance with me in the fire." Joy got up from bed and slowly danced with Jesus. This intimacy with Christ and the conviction of her belief has continued to carry Joy and helped her to share her love of God with others. Joy shares this love through her work with Her Choice Birmingham Women's Center and the At Home with Jim and Joy show on EWTN, as well as personally with her home parish, friends and family.
What is New #Evangelization and how are we called to participate in it? Jim Pinto is an experienced and influential game designer who has some thought provoking opinions about the state of the art in role playing games. One of his opinions is that as D&D has evolved as a game, that the role of game master has become more like "work" and less like "play" and that there is an imbalance in player expectations and game master responsibilities. We discuss this phenomenon, the concept of agency in role playing games, and the dynamics of the DM to Player social compact. What do you think the proper role of the game master is? I give my answer in this episode, but I'd love to hear yours. Since it came out so many years ago, Shadowrun has been the favourite game of connoisseurs and indies alike. It has inspired millions of people to look forward to a future where magic and science can coexist, and where computers are but the landscape of the mind. Indeed it has inspired pretty much any and every game Jim Pinto has ever created based on some of his best experiences as a player and GM. For the last few years the discussion on equality in games, both in and out of the fantasies, have been raging with arguments being made on both camps that make you wonder sometimes if we have learned anything in the last two hundred years. Some of us do want to see more diversity in games, both in the creative environment – that is, the people who create the games – and in the created environment, inside the games themselves. Some other people consider that inclusion of diversity and the added richness it provides a burden on their creative juices. Which is bullshit. However there is an aspect of all this inclusion that makes people nervous because on the one hand they fee they *must* include minorities and, on the other hand, if they make a mistake in the representation, they will be scorned mercilessly by members of those minorities. Is there a balance to be striken here? Do we truly need equality in games? Jim Pinto and I discuss this at length. Lots of cursing!
Tons and tons of games use some sort of religion in their setting. Many of them have more than one religion and all of those will have player characters, and those characters are meant to follow the tennets of religions that do not exist in our world. But our world does have religions people follow and they shape our views of many things from very early age. How does that affect us? How does that affect the characters we make, the games we play, the games we write… In this episode, Jim Pinto and I discuss that for a while. Hope you enjoy the show!

Sen, Daryl, and guest host Stephanie Straw delve into the realm of story telling games with Jessey Wright, Sara & Brendan Quinn, and Jim Pinto – from RPGs to Board and Card games
Since the OGL came into place a lot of years ago, there has been a totally unprecedented amount of work published for a lot of role playing games. Mind you, that doesn’t take much because RPGs are pretty young, so anything can be “unprecedented”. But the point is that it was. It still is. But is it a good thing that there are so many products? Is it good that we can have access to all of them? Jim Pinto, Liz Mackie and I discuss. And you can discuss it too!
In this episode, Jim Pinto proposes that Geekdom as we know is about to die a painful and very unavoidable death thanks to the blight that is cognitive and confirmation bias in our lives. In a nutshell, we are seeing more and more crappy shows and movies that people consider to be super great when, if you look at them under a critical and objective light, they are not all that great, like the Big Bang Theory, which is crap. Very crap. And yet some people love it and god forbid anyone speaks ill of that show. So there. Also I pay tribute to one of my Art heroes who recently and suddenly passed away, the rather fantastic Wayne England. He illustrated more than 100 Magic: The Gathering cards and, pretty responsible for the look and feel of the Warhammer 40K universe from the moment go and illustrated dozens of Dungeons & Dragons books. This is a controversial episode, so hope you like it!

I think it’s safe to say that every single roleplaying games out there has, at some point, wanted to write games. Whether it is for their own adventures, new classes, professions, spells… and fully fledged games too, of course. The RPG industry relies quite heavily on freelancers because few companies can afford to hire full-time writers. And when they do, they can afford to hire the best of the best. Also a lot of *incredible* writers decide to become freelancers anyway because that gives them a lot of freedom to do different projects and never become stagnant. But how does one become a freelance? Well, Jim Pinto has been a freelance for long, long time and has worked with more than can (or wants to) remember. Vickey Beaver does a lot of work with a lot of freelancers and I have a few of them at the office and help with the recruitment process in my company, so between the three of us know a thing or two about becoming one. And if you want to become one, follow this pro who’s making a career as a freelance: http://www.freelanceknight.com/
Playing RPGs is a source of joy and entertainment for those who play them, but sometimes, just sometimes, things don’t go according to plan. Sometimes there’s someone who ruins your game. And it can be you ruining it and not even realise. In this episode, Jim Pinto and I talk about some of the bad experiences we’ve had at the table and we air some dirty secrets, as well as a few tips on how to stop it when “it” goes awry. And we swear a bit in this episode. Sorry… Hope you enjoy the show!
Sometimes players have to leave the room for a few weeks at the time and sometimes they leave their characters behind so they can come back and retake the session. That happens more often than not in long term campaigns. What should happen to those characters? In this episode Vickey Beaver, Jim Pinto and myself discuss the dos and don’ts of dealing with characters that have been left behind and their possessions, worldly or otherwise. With sordid secrets and everything! Hope you enjoy the show!
A bit later than expected and planned, our tenth episode of the RPG room, where Vickey Beaver, Jim Pinto and myself talk about games. This episode was meant to come out on time for Halloween, but life in the shape of a Kickstarter and another crowd funding campaign in Spain have taken me away from everything I should actually be doing! I apologies for the delay. Anyway, how do you add atmosphere to your games? Music? Sounds? Light? Props? Combination of them all? Nothing? We tell you what we do in this podcast. How about what you do? Hope you enjoy the show!
And here we are again, in the RPG Room discussing if games should come with campaign material or just the rules. A lot of games come with a lot of information. Spells, equipment, combat, rules for travel, rules for talking, abilities, skills, bonuses… And some games come with setting and campaign information and others don’t, but do they need them? Should games come with some sort of setting information? Should that information be in a separate book? Do you care? Vickey Beaver, Jim Pinto and myself talk about it.
GenCon is for many of us Europeans a Mecca of gaming we’ll never get to see. Though I hope to someday. The biggest four days in gaming, as the slogan aptly announces, has been going more than 45 years. From humble beginnings it’s turned out to be a true giant. And deservedly so. This year it also comes with a very interesting twist that’s made it very exciting for even more people: The re-launch of Dungeons & Dragons, the game that started it all. Wizards of the Coast has this year made a huge effort to bring the excitement to the floor and regain the mantle that it lost quite a while ago. And I hope it works. I truly do. But of course that’s not the only thing that goes on. The Ennies are there and, literally, thousands of games people can join. Vickey Beaver and Jim Pinto join me in this most excellent episode to talk about GenCon, how to manage the schedule, what to do and, just as importantly, what not to do. Hope you enjoy the show!
Online conventions are a logical step in the socialising scene for a lot of hobbies. Probably any hobby, to be honest. The possibility of getting “together” with other people who share a passion and talk, play and share ideas together. That is exactly what Tre’ Grisby thought when he decided to create L.U.G. Con, an online RPG convention that’s been going on for the last three years and gathers a few hundred people every time it’s on air. But what does it take to create an online games convention? Exactly how does it work? I have never been to one, so I’m totally clueless and was really happy when Vickey Beaver asked Tre to come along and tell us about it. This interview was hosted by Paco Garcia Jaen, Vickey Beaver and Jim Pinto.Remember you can follow us on Twitter and Google+! Thank you for your support.
Once again we got together to discuss things roleplaying. I was joined by Jim Pinto and later on by Vickey Beaver and we decided to discuss the merits of good writing vs. game design. When is about roleplaying games, both indeed matter, but which one matters most? Clear, well written rules or atmospheric settings? As you can imagine, we all had something to say about that… But what do you say? Hope you enjoy the show!Remember you can follow us on Twitter and Google+! Thank you for your support.
Steampunk has become very, very fashionable in the last few decades. Although the concept has been with us for along time and novels with technology that had the flavour of what we currently know as Steampunk have been numerous by favour authors, it was only in the 80’s that the term Steampunk was coined by K.W. Jeter when he was looking for a term to works of novelists James Blaylock and Tim Powers. Fast forward to mid 00s and it became more and more popular to the point that now is actually “cool”. But is it a genre of anything or is it just a veneer of flavour thrown on top of something else because we need it to tell the story? Jim Pinto, Vidkey Beaver and myself have a chat about it! Hope you enjoy the show!
Published in 2012 by AEG, Dominare is part of the Tempest series of boardgame that the prolific company has released and that includes Mercante and others. In Dominare you try to gain control of the city of Tempest by spreading your influence through the city and developing a network to control the different areas of the city. Designed by Jim Pinto and with gorgeous artwork by Andrew Hepworth and Jeff Mimmelman, this game is a very promising edition to the series. Michael, Cesare and Max sat down at the table and had a first play at this game. Considering they like deep games with tons of options that make you think time and time again, will this game satisfy the intellectual demand of our intrepid players? Let’s find out!
After a while in which we’ve kept the room under lock and key, we are back to discuss all things role play and cover topics gaming related that might, or might not, be of interest to you, our lovely listeners. Together with the furniture, we’ve made some changes to the hosts. Or maybe I should say an addition. I am very pleased to announce that Jim Pinto, of Postworld Games will be joining us on a permanent basis to co-host this podcast with Vickey Beaver and myself. Jim has a wealth of experience in the world of RPG and boardgames with more designs in his portfolio than most, though he’s also less well-known than most. However, I have read a few of his games and backed his most recent Kickstarter and the suspicion that he has some sort of super power or alien heritage, because few other people can write as much apart from him and Endzeitgeist. Anyway. In this episode Jim explains why fads are a thing of the past and why cosplayer shouldn’t have a place at games conventions. We also find out why I am a horrible human being around Halloween. Enjoy the show!
Few authors, if any, provide with as many roleplaying games as Jim Pinto. The mastermind behind Postworld Games keeps churning ideas and turning them into games at a speed that makes the Enterprise seem like a child’s tricycle. Mr Pinto, friend of the show, has been at it again. Now he’s in Kickstarter offering 15 games for a price that is more than reasonable. As always, he offers great value for money *and* great entertainment! Hope you enjoy the interview!
To offer a single game when a writer creates a Kickstarter campaign is pretty normal. But Jim Pinto is not normal or ordinary. He’s pretty extraordinary. Rather than just giving you a game, he’s launching 6, probably 7, in one single Kickstarter. And they’re not the run-down-the-mill games either These are GMless games with a twist. Some have PnP, some have death, some have children… they’re all different and they’re all complete games with plenty of mechanics, story and fun.
Although this episode is indeed 101, it better not get lost never to be seen again, because it’s a cracker! For the first episode after our centenary there is an interview with Jim Pinto. If you don’t know Jim, please do listen and listen good. Jim is a very talented designer and writer who’s got a string of awards behind him, and surely another string ahead. In this episode we cover his latest publication, King for a Day, a Lovecraftian style systemless sandbox adventure set in a traditional Anglo-Saxon shire. With more than 300 pages of NPCs, locations and a selection of maps to go with the book. Anyway… it’s in the interview. But that is not all there is to Jim (at all!). He’s also had some Kickstarter projects and the latest one is for Toolcards, a set of cards with information that can be used for and in any RPG. At the time of the interview, the project was already funded and had just a few days to go. However, now you can get your set of ToolCards: Fantasy in DriveThruRPG though! As usual, your feedback is most appreciated, so please do feel free to email us on podcast@gmsmagazine.com and let us know what you think! Look forward to hearing from you and hope you enjoy the show!
