414 | How to Sell in the Age of AI: A Founder's Guide | Bob Kocis

Jeff Mains sits down with Bob Kocis, former President & COO of Aptean and former CRO of Continuum Managed Services, and author of The President's Club Mindset: Inside the Winning Strategies of Tech's Most Successful Salespeople. After interviewing 10 elite sellers who collectively won over 150 President's Club trips, Bob distilled what actually separates top 1% performers from everyone else — and it isn't closing technique. It's curiosity, agenda-free listening, disciplined meeting control, and a relentless focus on the customer's success rather than the contract date. The conversation covers the "Three Whys" deal-qualification framework, how to build a defensible unique value proposition, why founders should look past the close to the go-live date, and why AI will make skilled sellers more essential, not less.Key Takeaways4:29 — Bob joins the show; sets up his 30-year enterprise sales leadership career and why he wrote the book now.6:33 — The #1 trait shared by every elite seller he interviewed: relentless curiosity.7:35 — "Agenda-free listening" — why forgetting your own pitch is the key to understanding a prospect's real pain.11:48 — What genuine curiosity looks like in a real discovery call, and why the MEDDIC framework helps.13:15 — Introducing the Three Whys: Why buy at all? Why buy now? Why buy from us?14:22 — Why "no decision" — not the competitor — is the biggest deal-killer, especially for non-mission-critical replacement sales.17:39 — How to "set traps" for competitors by identifying and demonstrating your truly unique capabilities.19:06 — Seeing through the close: focusing on the customer's go-live/success date instead of the contract date.23:26 — Can empathy be taught? Bob's take on coaching curiosity and empathy into a sales team.27:30 — Deep dive back into the Three Whys, with a real story about almost losing (then saving) a deal over ROI with a skeptical CFO.33:21 — Why elite sellers run the meeting — controlling agenda and time is one of the most underrated trust-builders.39:49 — Will AI kill the sales job? Bob explains why complex B2B sales will need great sellers more than ever.43:44 — The one habit Bob wishes someone told him on day one: stay highly active and leverage your ecosystem.45:35 — Where to find Bob and get The President's Club Mindset.Tweetable Quotes"The elite sellers... they get the customer to envision the post-close scenario of success. That's where they're focused.""Put your head where your feet are." — Bob Kocis, quoting former MLB Manager of the Year Clint Hurdle"Stop tracking your close date. Start tracking their go-live date and work backwards from there.""The best sellers aren't the best talkers. They are the best listeners.""Sell like a partner who would still be in the room after the contract is signed, not one that vanishes like a ghost afterwards.""The harder I work, the luckier I get."SaaS Leadership LessonsCuriosity beats closing technique. The single biggest differentiator among 150+ President's Club winners wasn't pitch polish — it was genuine, agenda-free curiosity about the customer's pain.Fight the real battle, not the marketing battle. Go beyond feature checklists with your engineers to find the 2–5 capabilities competitors truly can't match — and build your sales process around them.Sell the go-live date, not the close date. Reframing the conversation around the customer's success timeline builds trust and quietly locks in the deal terms you need.Run your own meetings. Founders and engineers are subject-matter experts, not meeting facilitators — sellers must own the agenda, pacing, and time control or risk losing the room.Diagnose "why buy at all" before anything else. Most stalled deals aren't lost to competitors — they're lost to "no decision" because the compelling reason to change was never firmly established.AI raises the bar, it doesn't remove the seller. As buyers face more noise and options, skilled consultative sellers who can bridge business problems to ROI become more valuable, not less.Guest Resourcesbob.kocis@aptean.comhttps://bobkocis.com/https://www.linkedin.com/in/bob-kocis-1b0072a/Episode SponsorThe Futureproof Series - https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLfkXKUPZ5xuOqMPR7_gzGybncTtavyR1NThe Captain's KeysSmall Fish, Big Pond – https://smallfishbigpond.com/ Use the promo code ‘SaaSFuel'Champion Leadership Group – https://championleadership.com/https://jeffmains.com/books/SaaS Fuel ResourcesWebsite - https://championleadership.com/Jeff Mains on LinkedIn - https://www.linkedin.com/in/jeffkmains/Twitter - https://twitter.com/jeffkmainsFacebook - https://www.facebook.com/thesaasguy/Instagram - https://instagram.com/jeffkmains

Episode 351 features former MLB manager Terry Collins reflecting on his remarkable baseball career, followed by an engaging conversation with Honey & Co. Daily authors and restaurateurs Itamar Srulovich and Sarit Packer. Leonard is joined by his wife, Patty Jarrett, making her first appearance as a special guest co-host, as they explore Itamar and Sarit's culinary journey, their partnership, and the experiences that have shaped their lives together. Terry Collins has managed the Houston Astros, the Anaheim Angels, and the New York Mets in Major League Baseball and the Orix Buffaloes of Nippon Professional Baseball.  Terry started his baseball career as a minor league shortstop.  He then went on to manage the Albuquerque Dukes of the Pacific Coast League and the Buffalo Bisons of the International League at the minor league level.  He made his MLB managerial debut in 1994 with the Houston Astros.  His longest tenure came as manager of the New York Mets, where he led them to their first playoff appearance in nine years in 2015, which resulted in a trip to the 2015 World Series.  That same year, Terry won the National League Sporting News Manager of the Year Award. His steady leadership, resilience, and unwavering commitment to player development earned him the distinction of becoming the longest-tenured manager in Mets history.  Beyond the dugout, Terry has continued to serve the game as a special assistant, advisor, and ambassador for baseball. His enduring influence on the sport reflects a lifetime dedicated to leadership, perseverance, and excellence, leaving a lasting legacy that extends far beyond the wins and championships he helped achieve. Itamar Srulovich and Sarit Packer are the award-winning husband-and-wife chefs behind London's beloved Honey & Co. family of restaurants, celebrated for bringing the vibrant flavors and generous spirit of Middle Eastern cooking to the heart of the city. Since opening the original Honey & Co. in 2012, the pair have built a culinary destination renowned for its warm hospitality, exceptional baking, and deeply personal approach to food, later expanding with additional London restaurants, including their most recent addition, Honey & Co. Daily. Both trained in some of London's finest kitchens after beginning their culinary careers in Israel.  Itamar served as head chef for Yotam Ottolenghi before launching Honey & Co., while Sarit trained at Butler's Wharf and the Orrery before leading the pastry teams at Ottolenghi and serving as executive chef at NOPI. Their shared vision combines the rich culinary traditions of the Eastern Mediterranean with contemporary techniques and an unwavering commitment to hospitality. Beyond their restaurants, they are acclaimed cookbook authors whose award-winning books have introduced home cooks around the world to the joy of Middle Eastern cuisine. They are also hosts of the popular podcast Honey & Co:  The Food Sessions.  This interview was conducted during their international book tour for their latest cookbook, Honey & Co. The show dives into the fallout from Alex Cora's firing in Boston and the ripple effects it could have across Major League Baseball. Evan Roberts and Tiki Barber debate the stark difference between how Red Sox and Phillies players reacted to losing their managers, what that says about clubhouse culture, and where Cora could land next. The conversation also shifts to the Yankees, Aaron Judge's championship pressure, lineup frustrations, and trade deadline possibilities as New York continues its hot stretch. Later, Evan and Tiki stumble into a passionate debate about tanking in professional sports and pitch a radical idea to eliminate fans rooting against their own teams. The discussion turns into a full blown sports philosophy session with creative draft scenarios, rivalry fueled rooting interests, and why leagues may be misunderstanding the real problem with tanking in the first place.

The Washington Nationals are ushering in a new era with the hiring of 33-year-old Blake Butera as their next manager — making him the youngest skipper in Major League Baseball in decades. Once a player development leader in the Tampa Bay Rays organization, Butera brings a reputation for communication, teaching, and modern player development philosophies to a Nationals team ready for a fresh voice. His hiring signals a franchise pivot toward youth, alignment, and long-term growth after several years of inconsistency and rebuilding. In this episode of The Talk Nats Podcast, host Dan Holmi breaks down what Butera's hire means for the Nationals' clubhouse, how his coaching staff could shape the future, and what fans should expect in year one. Can Butera's modern approach help rebuild accountability and fundamentals in D.C.? Or will his inexperience at the big-league level pose early challenges? Dan explores both sides — and explains why this could be one of the most defining managerial hires in Nationals history. Hosted by Simplecast, an AdsWizz company.
