Patrick K. O'Donnell introduces Captain John Charles Carpenter and the Jesse Scouts, a Union special forces group named after Jesse Frémont. Emerging from the Missouri insurgency, these scouts utilized 21st-century tradecraft such as disguises and infiltration to gather intelligence behind enemy lines. Simultaneously, the Confederacy enacted the Partisan Ranger Act to organize irregular fighters like John Singleton Mosby. Operating in "Mosby's Confederacy," these rangers conducted asymmetrical warfare that tied down thousands of Union troops. Both sides grappled with the lack of discipline in these units, yet recognized their strategic brilliance in modern irregular combat. (1)1863

John started his career as a Volunteer firefighter with Roslyn Highlands FD in 1981, and in February of 1988 he was appointed to the FDNY. He was assigned to Engine 225 in East New York in April of that same year. In the Spring of 89 he transferred to Squad 18 as an inaugural member! In 2002 he was then transferred to Rescue 1. Then in July of 2005 he was promoted to Lieutenant assigned to the 7th division. In 2006 he returned to SOC in the SOC Support Ladder Unit. In 2007 he was assigned to another Squad, Squad 252. 2015 rolls around and wouldn't you know it, John was promoted to Captain and assigned to Chief Galvin in training. From 2016 to 2019 Cap covered the 11th Division. In May of 2019 Captain Ceriello was covering in Rescue 1, ultimately being assigned to R1 in January 2020. Captain Ceriello stayed with Rescue 1 until he retired in August of 2025. No doubt Cap has some great stories for us and we can't wait to hear them. Gonna be another great show. Captain John Galvin knew he wanted to spend his life fishing at an early age. He began on the docks and Eastman's Bait and Tackle in Falmouth, Massachusetts working his way up to the Viking 72, El Diablo, where he puts his anglers on tuna, marlin, and, most importantly, a memorable experience. John talks about his work with white marlin in the Skillie Project, and we hear the sea shanty that should have been on everyone's Spotify Wrapped in 2024.

He served in the 155th Security Forces Squadron of the Nebraska Air National Guard from 2001 – 2007 including time on active duty in support of Operations Noble Eagle & Enduring Freedom. He joined the Lancaster County Sheriff's Office in 2007 and graduated from the Nebraska Law Enforcement Training Center's 167th Basic Training Academy. During his career, Captain Vik has served in all sworn divisions within the Lancaster County Sheriff's Office, including assignments as a Patrol Deputy, Field Training Officer, Criminal Investigator, Crash Reconstructionist, and Instructor. He was promoted to Sergeant in 2013 and then to Captain in 2017.  Today, Captain Vik commands LSO's Patrol Division, overseeing uniformed patrol operations throughout Lancaster County.Captain Vik has a bachelor's degree in psychology from the University of Nebraska–Lincoln. John is a highly experienced US Merchant Marine officer with a diverse background and has worked on container ships, oil tankers, and offshore supply vessels across the world. gCaptain is a leading global maritime and offshore industry news platform offering insights, information, and resources on shipping, offshore drilling, safety, technology, and more. We are struck by how important the relationship is between energy and shipping and John proved to be the perfect expert to help us explore shipping, energy, global trade, geopolitics, technologies, inflation, regulatory impact, and more.   John first shares his journey from an interest in sailing and computers to attending the Naval Academy (and then the Merchant Marine Academy) to becoming a captain, his experiences in the offshore oil industry, and the inspiration behind "Fire on the Horizon." We discuss the gCaptain platform and the importance of raising awareness about the shipping industry and its role in the global economy, key geopolitical challenges in shipping, the importance of ton-miles, shipping efficiency, and the shortage of shipyard capacity globally. Shipping may be one of those industries you just think you understand, until you realize how much you are missing.   To start the show, Mike Bradley highlighted key economic events over the next week and noted that Brent and WTI prices surpassed $92/bbl. and $89/bbl. respectively, due to concerns of a widening global crude oil supply deficit in Q4'23 of 3mmbpd. He pointed out that the last time the global crude oil supply deficit was this wide was Q3'21 and that the US SPR was over 600mm barrels and today it's 350mm barrels, which provides little price manipulation latitude this go around for the Biden Administration. He also noted the last time 12-month crude oil time spreads were this deep in backwardation was June 2022 when WTI price was trading over $110/bbl. He concluded by noting that energy equities have generally lagged behind the current surge in crude oil price mostly because equity investors want to see how crude oil price trades when Saudi eventually begins pushing crude oil barrels back into the market. Arjun Murti mentioned a recent opinion piece predicting peak fossil fuel demand this decade (by Fatih Birol in the Financial Times) and highlighted the math of global energy needs for long-term demand, the need to depoliticize energy discussions, and the importance of a healthy North American oil and gas sector.   We greatly appreciate John's thorough tour of the complex and multifaceted world of shipping. John is not only incredibly knowledgeable, but the experience of talking with him was a reminder that sometimes the best way to understand energy better is to go to an adjacent industry and look back with a different vantage point on all these questions the world has on energy, the environment, and national security.
