All the Film Things

ATFT is back! On the thirty- ninth episode of All the Film Things, I talked with Black female filmmaker Shanita Brown! Shanita Brown is an award- winning Daytona-based filmmaker who has written and directed nine films so far. She has had quite a journey getting to where she is today. For one thing, she initially pursued a career in law with her passion being to help people. Even though she earned both Bachelor's and Masters law degrees, Shanita's life took a different route, and she found herself helping people through film instead. Before making her own films, Shanita worked in various roles on and off camera for ten years. In 2022, she released her first short film “Mine Since Birth” which had a successful film festival run. Ever since, she has continued to make her own short films, star and/ or work behind the scenes. In March 2023, Shanita was one of eight women honored at the Mary S. Harrell Black Heritage Museum in New Smyrna Beach for their reception centered on "Young Women to Set Your Sight On". She is also the Content Manager for the streaming service Gen X TV and was recently named the manager of the Cinematique theater in Daytona. Shanita's latest project is the drama short, “Tha Bone Collecta”. The short, inspired by real life, is focused around a group of close, longtime friends. One friend in the group, Shanita's character Laura Queen, learns the secrets of individuals within the group and causes drama by revealing it to other friends, making her “the bone collecta”. For this project, Shanita directed, wrote, starred in, and produced the film. While the film stars a great ensemble of women, this is the first time Shanita has starred as the lead in one of her own films! “Tha Bone Collecta” has just begun its film festival run and is expected to release on Gen X TV once the festival run is finished! The film will be having a premiere on Saturday, April 12 at the AMC Altamonte near Orlando, Florida, so if you're in the area or want to make the trip, go to the premiere! While you're waiting for “Tha Bone Collecta” to be available on streaming, check out some of Shanita's past work on Gen X TV and the Shanita Brown Films Youtube channel by clicking this link!: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC92QB5m4bFUYvj4IEHMuqJw Shanita loves connecting with filmmakers so if you want to work with her, reach out to her on Instagram @ShanitaABrown on Instagram or follow her on Facebook under her name Shanita A. Brown! This is Shanita's first appearance on ATFT! We met working together on the set of the short film "Time Will Tell" (alongside past ATFT guests Vesta Millard and Manny Plaza- Fernandez)! From our first conversation, I gained so much from talking with her. Aside from one, admittedly, hilarious prank she pulled on me, she was so kind and I always looked forward to coming to set just to converse with her. We instantly connected and Shanita is without a doubt one of the best people I've been fortunate enough to meet on set. I had been wanting to interview her ever since I met her but I waited until the very end of the shoot to ask her which made for a funny moment at dinner after word got out about my podcast. There were a few technical difficulties in regard to the audio so I apologize that it is not the same quality as usual. This episode was recorded on March 20, 2025. In this episode, Shanita shares her journey from initially aspiring to become a lawyer to working in the industry to making her own films. Filmmakers will especially benefit from Shanita's stories and mindset navigating the industry. Shanita also talks about her love of Halle Berry, having no fear when it comes to the horror genre, working with Brad Pitt on his new film F1, and her biggest- and perhaps surprising- career goal. All this and much more on the latest episode of All the Film Things! Background music created and used with permission by the Copyright Free Music - Background Music for Videos channel on YouTube.

From her childhood fears of sharks in Florida to pursuing her dream career, Megan's story highlights the unique and varied backgrounds that can lead to a successful career in shark science. Growing up in Florida, Megan was initially afraid of sharks due to the proximity of shark-infested waters in New Smyrna Beach, known as the "shark bite capital of the world." However, a pivotal moment at the beach witnessing a shark catch sparked her curiosity and led her to delve deeper into the world of sharks. Despite her initial fears, Megan's interest in sharks grew as she read books, watched documentaries, and dreamed of becoming a shark scientist. Her passion for these misunderstood creatures drove her to pursue a career in marine science, ultimately leading her to study sharks. Megan's educational journey took her from Emory University in Atlanta to Moss Landing Marine Laboratories in California, where she worked on skates and deep-sea sharks. She then transitioned to studying white sharks in New England, working with renowned scientists like Greg Skomal and Lisa Natanson. Megan's transition from studying skates and deep-sea sharks to focusing on white sharks showcases the flexibility and adaptability required in shark science. Her willingness to explore different species and research areas demonstrates the diverse paths one can take within the field of shark science. Megan's involvement in studying white sharks off Cape Cod and her collaboration with researchers across different regions highlight the interconnected nature of shark science. By working with scientists from various areas and sharing knowledge and experiences, Megan contributes to the collective understanding of shark populations and behaviors. Overall, Megan Winton's journey in shark science serves as an inspiring example of how individuals with diverse backgrounds and experiences can find their way into the field of shark research. Her story emphasizes the importance of passion, dedication, and a willingness to explore different avenues in pursuing a career in shark science. The increase in white shark populations along the East Coast, including Cape Cod and Central California, can be attributed to a combination of conservation efforts and the recovery of seal populations. The conversation between Megan and Dave highlighted how the gray seal population's recovery played a significant role in attracting white sharks back to the area. In the 1980s and 90s, the absence of seals on Cape Cod beaches meant that white sharks were not a common sight. However, with the recovery of the gray seal population, seals became a prevalent food source for white sharks, leading to their return to the area. Conservation measures put in place in the 90s have also contributed to the increase in white shark populations. These measures, aimed at protecting marine mammals like seals, have indirectly supported the recovery of white sharks. The protection of seals and other marine mammals has provided a stable food source for white sharks, encouraging their presence in these coastal areas. The collaborative efforts of researchers and scientists, such as those working in Cape Cod and Central California, have been crucial in monitoring and studying the white shark populations. Through tagging programs, aerial surveys, and public awareness initiatives like the Shark Smart booths, researchers have been able to gather valuable data on white shark movements and behaviors. This data has not only enhanced our understanding of white shark populations but has also helped in informing conservation strategies and public safety measures. The recovery and increase in white shark populations along the East Coast serve as a testament to the interconnectedness of marine ecosystems. The resurgence of seals and the presence of healthy white shark populations indicate a balanced and thriving marine environment. By studying and monitoring these apex predators, researchers can continue to unravel the complexities of marine ecosystems and work towards sustainable conservation practices. Collaboration and communication among shark scientists play a crucial role in studying and understanding shark populations. In the podcast episode, Megan Winton discusses the importance of sharing information on white shark sightings and utilizing new technologies like drones and spotter pilots. Megan mentions how shark scientists collaborate and communicate with each other to share information about white shark sightings. This exchange of data allows researchers to track the movements and behaviors of white sharks in different regions. By sharing sightings and observations, scientists can gain a more comprehensive understanding of white shark populations and their movements. The use of new technologies like drones and spotter pilots has revolutionized the way shark scientists study these animals. Drones provide an aerial view of the ocean, allowing researchers to spot sharks from above and gather valuable data on their behavior and movements. Spotter pilots, like the one mentioned in the episode, fly over the ocean to locate sharks and report their findings to researchers on the ground. This collaboration and utilization of new technologies enhance the efficiency and accuracy of shark population studies. By working together and leveraging advanced tools, shark scientists can gather more data, analyze trends, and make informed decisions about conservation and management strategies for shark populations. The shared knowledge and resources within the shark science community contribute to a more comprehensive understanding of these fascinating marine creatures.

But some beaches are not just unsafe — they're outright dangerous! Here are 8 places where you should never attempt a swim if you treasure your health and life. TIMESTAMPS: Blue Holes 1:03 Colorful Pools 2:15 Laguna Caliente 4:18 Nyiragongo Crater's Lava Lake 5:16 Pink Lake 6:19 New Smyrna Beach 8:12 Frying Pan Lake 9:22 Eagle's Nest Sinkhole 10:22 Music: https://www.youtube.com/audiolibrary/... SUMMARY: - Most blue holes are open to the public. However, some of the biggest ones have acquired a really bad reputation among divers. - It's hard to believe that nature created something as colorful as the thermal pools located in Yellowstone National Park. They look like something from another world: bright, beautiful...and deadly. - Laguna Caliente is located in Costa Rica and differs dramatically from its sibling, Botos Lake. These 2 bodies of water are crater lakes of the Poas Volcano. - Mount Nyiragongo, which is situated in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, is an active volcano. Its last eruption took place in 2002. In its crater, there's a lake. But it's not your typical lake. - Lake Hillier in Western Australia is indeed as pink as it looks. This is a shallow salt lake that's beautifully edged with white salt formations and surrounded by eucalyptus forests. - New Smyrna Beach has been called the “Shark Capital of the World” by the International Shark Attack File. In 2008, almost 40% of all shark attacks on the planet happened in this region. - If you look at the photo of Frying Pan Lake in New Zealand, you might think that there's fog hanging low over the water. Similar fog (or, more precisely, steam) forms over warm water on a cold morning. - Eagle's Nest Sinkhole is a body of water in Florida that looks like an ordinary pond. It's only when you get into the water that it gets dangerous. Beneath the lake, there's a huge system of underwater caves with rooms and passages that spread for miles. Discover how he and his team turned vacant lots into cash-flowing assets, his strategies for financing mobile home parks, and why preserving affordable housing is a top priority. Key Takeaways: Overcoming the Track Record Challenge: Jason emphasizes that, even without a track record, it's possible to enter the competitive commercial real estate market. He highlights that their first deal was owner-financed, and they didn't need a significant track record to secure it. Building relationships with local community banks and having a solid business plan can open doors for investors, regardless of their experience. Mobile Home Park Financing Strategies: Jason discusses various financing options for mobile home parks, including owner financing and working with local community banks. He shares that they often opt for owner financing, providing down payments ranging from 10% to 50%. Jason emphasizes the importance of finding financing terms that align with your investment goals and strategy. Long-Term Hold Strategy and Investor Returns: While Jason's team has ambitious goals, including holding 10,000 units by 2028, they maintain a buy-and-hold strategy. They aim to refinance properties within three to five years to return capital to investors. Their typical offering includes an 8% preferred return and a 70% equity split with a seven-year hold period. This strategy allows them to maintain properties, preserving affordable housing for the long term while providing returns to investors.   Jason Postill | Real Estate Background Managing Partner of MHCI Group Portfolio:  16 mobile home parks, 749 units Based in: New Smyrna Beach, Florida and Little Rock, Arkansas Say hi to him at:  www.mhcigroup.com Best Ever Book: The ONE Thing by Gary W. Jim Landsman, BSME, MBA. Every business leader in 2020 is challenged to figure out how to run a successful business during a pandemic. Jim not only forged that path but then had to deal with contracting the virus himself and living through a nightmare of being on a ventilator for 10 days and coming very close to dying. He credits being in good physical shape at 57 for saving his life. Listen to the fear he and his family had to go through to come out on the other end. The support of friends, family and even complete strangers has been overwhelming. He still is trying to get back physically what was taken during his fight to survive. Jim is a co-founder and the President and CEO for Atlas Injury Prevention Solutions. Atlas IPS is a leading nationwide injury (MSD) prevention service and technology provider. Jim has a bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering and a masters degree in business administration, both from the University of Notre Dame. Jim's 30+ years of leadership experience is equally split between operations and sales/marketing. Jim is originally from Grand Haven, MI but now resides in New Smyrna Beach, FL. He is happily married to his wife and soulmate (Gayle) for almost 30 years, and has three children and two grandchildren. Jim loves most to spend time with his family, but when he is not doing that he likes to run on the beach, fish, boogie board, kayak, and (pre-COVID) travel to and explore new and fun destinations.
