Valdes was the U.S. head of operations for the Medellín Cartel. He was born in Cuba but moved to the U.S. with his siblings and their father when he was a kid. They grew up poor, but with education always stressed as important in his life, Valdes went to college as a teenager while he worked at the Federal Reserve Bank. After he went to work for his accounting professor, Valdes was introduced to the life of crime that would be his for years to come. The first client he worked with was a grocery store by the name of La Puerta del Sol. It turned out to be a front for drug dealers. Not long after learning this, Valdes himself was brought in to head the U.S. side of operations for what would eventually be known as the Medellín Cartel.   Where is Jorge Valdes now? Valdes had a high-profile career as a cocaine kingpin in Miami. At one point, however, he was sentenced to 10 years in prison on cocaine-related charges. In 1995, he was released, and he left behind his life of crime for good. He is so far removed from his former life that he even became a pastor and got his Ph.D. in n New Testament Early Christianity and Ethics. In 2000, Valdes published the autobiography Coming Clean: The True Story of a Cocaine Drug Lord and His Unexpected Encounter With God. He's also a motivational speaker who appears on various podcasts and at different events. Valdes really does seem to have learned the error of his ways and turned things around completely. WHAT DO YOU DO WHEN YOUR DOCTOR TELLS YOU THAT YOU SHOULD HAVE DIED BEFORE 35 YEARS OF AGE AND YOU CAN STILL DIE ANY MINUTE? When we moved to Orlando last year my wife Sujey insisted that I change to a local cardiologist. At first, I resisted her as I had been with the same doctor for the last three years, but she insisted and I gave in. Last week my new cardiologist at the University of Central Florida ordered a CAT Scan of my heart. When he got the results he came into the room and said, you should have died before you reached 35 years of age. He said the Scan revealed that I have a very rare heart defect called AN ANOMALOUS ORIGIN OF THE LEFT CORONARY ARTERY. This defect could have caused my death many years back and still could any minute, he then suggested I go to either Cleveland Clinic in Ohio or Mayo Clinic in Rochester for an evaluation and probable surgery. My amazing wife, began to email everyone you can imagine, asking how they had missed this life-ending defect. As a result, we got a call from the head of all nurses at CC in Ohio who informed us that the world's best in my defect was Dr. Gosta Pettersson would personally review my file and we receive his comments in a few days. We received a call from Dr. Pettersson's assistant stating that we should fly to Ohio for further tests and surgery. We plan to arrive in Cleveland on June 23rd, and June 24th through 28th, I will have a series of tests with an office visit on the 29th. Dr. Pettersson is scheduled to perform an OPEN HEART SURGERY o correct this defect on July 1st. When faced with a very sudden and shocking prognosis about your health, where any minute your life can end, at this juncture is when truly your faith in God and your belief that He controls your days on earth is tested. I have always told my children to live a life never wondering what if. What if you had been a better husband? a better father? a better friend? a better brother? a better human being? Have you loved people? Have you cared about the least of His? If you have as I pray I have tried, then there is nothing to worry about. God controls the days of my life thus I will die the day God ordains. I know this will simply be another chapter of my life for if I live I live for Christ and if I die I will see Christ, I can not lose. What is most important for us to learn is that our life is but a whisper, we are here now and gone tomorrow, so let us not waste our lives in bickering, arguing, hating. Let us spend the few days we have on this earth loving, our family, our friends, investing in the lives of our children, our spouses, our loved ones. Do not fear, for I am with you. Do not be afraid, for I am with you. Do not be afraid for I am your God. I will give you strength, and for sure I will help you. Yes, I will hold you up with my right hand that is right and good. In this episode, our host Jeff Graham interviews Jorge Valdes-Iga in studio about I Was There on the Popcorn Talk Network. Jorge Valdés-Iga is a Mexican-American writer, producer, director and cinematographer. He started directing theatre and short films in college and was hired by a Japanese production company to direct the thriller Hotel Chelsea (2010) a few years after he graduated. He also served as a hired-gun co-director and cinematographer in horror/comedy You Can't Kill Stephen King (2012). His third directorial work, I Was There (2013), is a drama a bout a New York firefighter dealing with survival guilt after the 9/11 attacks. The script was written by Jorge Valdés-Iga, James A. Lee and Sinead Daly.
