From Communist Cuba to the American Dream: Heydi Martínez's Journey to Freedom

American Potential

What happens when a young girl raised under communism is given a second chance—in the land of the free? In this gripping episode of American Potential, host David From sits down with Heydi Martínez, a courageous woman who grew up under Cuba's authoritarian regime, arrived in the U.S. as a teenager with nothing, and is now working with Americans for Prosperity to protect the very freedoms she once lived without. Heydi shares what it was like to live in survival mode—brushing her teeth with soap, relying on rationed food, using newspaper as toilet paper, and being taught to fear and hate America. But her perspective shifted dramatically when she arrived in Florida at age 16. With no English, no money, and no connections, she fought through every obstacle, eventually graduating with honors and finding her voice as a passionate advocate for liberty. She also reflects on the emotional journey of reuniting with her mother after a decade apart, bringing her family to safety, and the warning she wants every American to hear: Communism doesn't arrive overnight—it seeps in slowly. This episode is a heartfelt, firsthand reminder of why freedom must be protected, why the American Dream is still real, and why the voices of those who lived under tyranny must never be ignored. If you've ever needed a reason to believe in the power of liberty, this is it.

Ron Mitori's new book, “” looks to the past and to the future as the U.S. position in the world evolves. His book starts off with stories of personal experiences under socialist regimes. One story, of Lore and her family begins: “Lore's father had been a successful inventor and businessman who owned a factory that produced household goods during WWII. He was also part of the underground movement that did not support Hitler. Lore had lived with her parents and two sisters in a section of Germany that became East Germany. She wanted to study and become an archaeologist as a child, but war can change your dreams. At the war's end, that area was administered brutally by the East German police, and a wall was built separating East from West Germany. As the oldest, Lore went to live for almost three years with her grandparents because they could get a food ration card if they had a child in the house.” Another story from : “Venezuela was the wealthiest country in South America. Pablo was born there, and his father was a very successful lawyer. Pablo's cousin fled from Communist Cuba ruled by Fidel Castro to Venezuela to be near him and his family and escape Communism. One year later in 1999, Hugo Chavez became the leader of Venezuela and began dismantling the capitalism that made the country wealthy with a thriving middle class. That cousin realized he had seen this “movie” before in Cuba and wanted no part in it. He decided to leave after only one year in Venezuela. He convinced Pablo to join him and come to the US, but Pablo's father mistakenly thought his status and wealth would continue, so he remained. Pablo now sends money to him every month to keep him from starving.”. Looking back and looking forward, Ron sees the U.S. at a cross roads. Which way will we go? This is Frank Gaffney with the Secure Freedom Minute. On this Thanksgiving, I am proud to introduce two men whose thankfulness is as inspiring as it is profound. Both Ross Mason and Ignacio Montoya suffered life-altering accidents, rendering them quadriplegics. Both exemplify indomitable spirits, overcoming incredible physical challenges and leading the way for others to do the same. Ross is a former triathlete and successful entrepreneur who, despite chronic health problems, has devoted his life to serving the Lord and an astonishing array of charitable causes. Ignacio, a refugee from Communist Cuba, was set to serve his adopted country as an Air Force pilot, but now is doing so by personally demonstrating how God's grace, concerted physical therapy and technology can help even severely injured people recover key functions. Meet – and be inspired by – these extraordinary patriots on our Thanksgiving edition of “Securing America” on the Real America's Voice network. This is Frank Gaffney.

Florida Matters sat down with Dr. Nashid Madyun, executive director of Florida Humanities, and Jacki Levine, the editor of "Once Upon a Time in Florida" for a conversation about what went into the creation of this book. We also hear from some of the contributors to "Once Upon a Time in Florida": NPR TV and film critic Eric Deggans talks about how the stylized image of Florida in shows like Miami Vice affects the way others see the state, and how we see ourselves. WUSF's Dalia Colon reads from her profile of former U.S. Rep. Ileana Ros Lehtinen, whose family sought refuge in Florida after fleeing Communist Cuba. Historian Gary Mormino muses on the demise of the once mighty citrus industry, and Pulitzer Prize winning author Jack Davis describes the "beauty and bluster" of the Gulf of Mexico and its impact on the state.

On Friday November 22nd, 1963, New York's Village Voice co-founder Dan Wolf's office was swarmed with people. Journalist Jerry Tallmer later remembered being there, talking and grieving, when in burst Jean Shepherd, excited and full of fire. Shep said, “Wouldn't you know! Wouldn't you know! It was a Fair Play for Cuba guy who did it!” Lee Harvey Oswald had connections with the Fair Play for Cuba group, an organization protesting the U.S.' treatment of Communist Cuba under Fidel Castro. Although Shepherd was a noted liberal, the idea that Oswald wasn't some right-wing fascist, but a nutcase of the left excited Shep, and Shep was mad. Commentator Barry Farber remembered that Shep was incensed that he couldn't get on the air. He said, “for crying out loud, we finally have something to talk about and they took us off the air.” On Monday, November 25th, 1963 at 11:15PM, Jean Shepherd was finally able to sign on for WOR. What follows is a sober, serious commentary on the state of the United States and what John Kennedy meant to Jean Shepherd. This is the full forty-five minute broadcast.

It's Tuesday, October 11th, A.D. 2022. This is The Worldview in 5 Minutes heard at www.TheWorldview.com.  I'm Adam McManus. (Adam@TheWorldview.com) By Kevin Swanson Analysis of ministries to the persecuted church According to The Worldview's analysis of the Evangelical Council for Financial Accountability's numbers, Western Christian care agencies for the persecuted church provided 27% more assistance to the suffering body of Christ in 2021 than 2020.   The five largest persecution aid ministries spent a total of $121 million in 2021, up from $96 million in 2020.  Our analysis found Persecution Project, Barnabas Aid, and Open Doors ministries had the lowest ratio of administration and publicity to total expenditures ratio (over three years). Their efficiency with charitable funds ran 9.3%, 10.8%, and 9.7% respectively. Voice of the Martyrs maintained a ratio of administration costs at a ratio of 15.3%, and International Christian Concern maintained a ratio of 16.8%. Open Doors was retaining more of the income, with a 2021 expenditures-to-income ratio of only 65%. And Barnabas Aid indicated the highest need of funds, with an expenditures-to-income ratio of 108%.   You can reference ecfa.org/Members to do your own analysis before funding these ministries.  Jesus said: “Sell your possessions, and give to the needy. Provide yourselves with moneybags that do not grow old, with a treasure in the heavens that does not fail.” (Luke 12:33-34) The financial cost of the hurricanes Although Cornwall Alliance asserts that the incidence of forest fires and hurricanes are not necessarily worse than they have been in other periods of history, property damage does seem to be on the rise. In the providence of God, estimates for damage wrought by Hurricane Ian will total between $41 and $70 billion. The 21st century is shaping up to be hard on the United States. According to our Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, 2022 will turn out to be the eighth worst hurricane and fire season in recorded history. The fifth worst year was 2020.  The fourth worst year was 2012. The third worst year was 2021. The second worst year was 2005, when Hurricane Katrina hit Louisiana. And the worst natural disaster year was 2017, racking up $366 billion in losses, when American shores were slammed with Hurricane Harvey, Hurricane Irma, and Hurricane Maria.  The total loss of life caused by Hurricane Ian now exceeds 100, making this the deadliest storm hitting America since Hurricane Katrina in 2005, which killed 1,833 people, and Hurricane Agnes in 1972, in which 122 lost their lives. You can help the Hurricane Ian victims here. Samaritan's Purse organized 1,000 people for Operation Clean-up Samaritan's Purse has organized a clean-up operation for Southwestern Florida, reports The Christian Post.  As of Monday, 1,000 volunteers are on the ground. Franklin Graham introduced the campaign, stating that, “Everything we do, we want to do it in the name of Jesus Christ. I want people to know that God loves them. He hasn't forgotten them.”  U.S. stocks crater The U.S. stocks continue to crater. The NASDAQ lost 14% over the last month, and another 6% over the last four days. Since January of this year, the NASDAQ is down 34%, Bitcoin is down 60%, and gold is down 7%. Russian missiles fired on Ukraine The Ukraine war shows no signs of abating. Death rained from the sky as Russian missiles hit cities across Ukraine on Monday, right into the heart of Kyiv, the nation's capital. Russian President Vladimir Putin said the strikes were a consequence for the Ukrainian strike on a Russian bridge over the weekend. The U.S. has poised itself as a significant player in the Russian-Ukrainian conflict, as the President approved another $12.3 billion of military aid to the conflict a week ago. This is in addition to $15.2 billion appropriated so far this year.  The European Union has provided about $2.5 billion to the Ukraine war. The EU and U.S. contributions to the war is about twice the Ukrainian military budget.  Communist Cuba greenlights homosexual faux marriage Communist Cuba has voted to legitimize homosexual faux marriage.   Two-thirds of the nation showed up at the polls to approve a government-endorsed policy to allow surrogate pregnancies and unnatural sexual relationships.   This comes exactly 100 years after the Bolsheviks were the first in the modern world to approve of homosexuality, with a revision of the criminal code in 1922. Skyrocketing elder fraud And finally, elder fraud is on the rise.   The FBI reports a four-fold increase over 2017. Now, our elderly are scammed out of $1.7 billion per year. The most common scams are government impersonation (including IRS and Social Security scams), sweepstakes scams, robocalls featuring the question, “Can you hear me?, and the Grandparent scam, in which the voice begins with “Hi, Grandma, do you know who this is?” It usually involves a plea for overdue rent, car repairs, or jail bonds. God's Word reminds us this day: 'You shall rise before the gray-headed and honor the presence of an old man, and fear your God: I am the Lord.” (Leviticus 19:32) Close And that's The Worldview in 5 Minutes on this Tuesday, October 11th, in the year of our Lord 2022. Spread over three days in Cuba, the Havana Jam ‘79 featured Columbia recording artists alongside native musicians and bands. It was a monumental, historic event that hardly anyone knows about anymore.    But Ernesto Juan knows the story. And, he's been trying to tell it for the past decade.    The Cuban-born journalist, documentarian and translator became engrossed with the festival around the time of its 30th anniversary in 2009. Since then, he's been collecting interviews and footage with plans to release a feature-length film about the event.    He's also spoken at length with one of the concert's biggest names: Billy Joel. And, Ernesto has near-exclusive audio recordings of the performance that hardly anyone knew existed.    Right before Billy and the band took the stage, Elizabeth Joel, Billy's wife and manager at the time, ordered Columbia Records personnel to turn off all audio and visual recording. But, two bootleg copies exist, and both found their way to Ernesto.    Since then, he's been flying all over the world gathering more first hand accounts and documents from an unprecedented three days of performances by American recording artists in Communist Cuba.    But the story goes well beyond the concert. In our own interview, Ernesto also talks about how Western music was villainized by Fidel Castro and his followers, but sought out by many others. He gives his perspective and memories of his homeland along with long-forgotten lore about the Havana Jam and striking up a friendship with Billy Joel.    In this special episode of Glass Houses - A Billy Joel Podcast, Ernesto Juan joins us as we dig deep into Havana Jam ‘79, and what life was like decades ago in Cuba.   Havana Jam Links: ZuDhan Productions Website Contact: zudhanproductions@yahoo.com Havana Jam '79 on Facebook   ------   Email us: glasshousespodcast@gmail.com   Glass Houses - A Billy Joel Podcast on the web / social media: Website: http://www.glasshousespod.com Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/glasshousespodcast/ Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/glasshousespod/ Twitter: https://twitter.com/glasshousespod

Each side in this Case had a male homosexual secret.  Remember that we're in 1949, when conservatives thought that male homosexuality was a sin and a crime and enlightened liberals thought that gay men were tragic mistakes of nature, mentally ill, women trapped in men's bodies, but fortunately there was talk therapy, shock treatment and, if all else fails, lobotomies.  (Homosexual men were subjected to lobotomies until recently in Communist Cuba.)   Chambers, during his years in the Communist underground, had had gay sex with men he met in public places.  And Hiss's stepson (Mrs. Hiss's son by her first marriage) was gay and had been discharged from the Navy in 1945 on psychological grounds, which was a polite way of eliminating gay sailors.  The precise dimensions of each side's gay secret, how it was concealed, and how it was hinted at publicly and used covertly, is the subject of this Podcast.   Further Research:   Robert Stripling, HUAC's Chief Investigator and Nixon's partner in the first phase of the Case, said that it was whispered around the hearing room from Day One that Chambers was “a queer” — Stripling's word, not mine.  He also said that, whenever an ex-Communist testified, within hours rumors began that he or she was an alcoholic or drug addict, had been to see a psychiatrist, or was a “sex pervert” — again, Stripling's words, not mine.   The liberal historian Arthur Schlesinger, Jr., wrote discreetly that the “anti-Chambers whispering campaign was one of the most repellent of modern history.”  George H. Nash, “The Conservative Intellectual Movement in America Since 1945” at 100 (Basic Books 1976).  Alistair Cooke used equal delicacy when, in his inventory of ‘secret explanations' of what happened between Hiss and Chambers, he wrote “one or two other theories . . . went the rounds of Washington and New York [that] . . . so mercilessly intrude into other people's lives that the incompleteness of this report appears a small price to pay for giving everybody so slandered the benefit of a large doubt.  The reader who is most prurient to know about such theories will be the one most apt to hit on them.”  Cooke at 334.  Dr. Weinstein, in his definitive book on this Case, deals with Chambers' homosexual acts at 112-13, 129-30, with Hiss's stepson's gayness at 424-25, and with Hiss's use of Chambers secret gay life to ‘explain' his mentally ill lies about Hiss at 405-08 and 639-41 (section 4, titled “Chambers as Paranoid:  The Revenge Motif” in an appendix titled “Six Conspiracies in Search of an Author, 1948-1996”).    I have never seen any indication that the two sides in this Case formally agreed not to smear each other with their gay secrets.  Nor have I ever had any reason to believe that Alger Hiss was in the slightest degree gay.   Questions: If you were one of Hiss's lawyers and the prejudices of 1949 were still widespread today, would your ethics deter you from smearing Chambers as gay (and therefore mentally ill or evil)?  Don't you have an ethical obligation to defend your client vigorously??  If you were Prosecutor Murphy, and if you feared testimony by Hiss's stepson, would you use your gay smear on the same grounds?  On the whole, which side do you condemn more for its use of the other side's ‘gay secret'?   Here is a poem, titled “Lothrop, Montana” that Whittaker Chambers wrote. It was published (under Chambers' real name) in The Nation magazine — to this day, the media headquarters of the Hiss side — on June 30, 1926, at page 726:   The cottonwoods, the boy-trees, Imberle — the clean, green, central bodies Standing apart, freely, freely, but trammeled; With their branches inter-resting — for support, Never for caressing, except the wind blow. And yet, leaning so fearfully into one another, The leaves so pensile, so tremulously hung, as they lean toward one another; Unable to strain farther into one another And be apart; Held back where in the earth their secret roots Wrap one about another, interstruggle and knot; the vital filaments Writhing in struggle; heavy, fibrous, underearthen life, From which the sap mounts filling those trembling leaves Of the boy-trees, the cottonwoods.   Is it reading too much between the lines to see in there a description of wrestling (Chambers' college sport) by two young gay men, ending as each one's ‘sap mounts' within their ‘secret roots' and ‘trembling leaves'?

Peru was something of a success story in Latin America. According to the Economist's tracking, from 2001 to 2016, the poverty rate fell from 60% to 21% and the economy also grew at an average annual rate of 5.6%. The government also used a healthy mix of free market policies and export led growth, which was different from the protectionism seen in other countries in the region. Unfortunately, as of late, the country has become politically divided and has produced four presidents and eight finance ministers in five years. This instability has made long term change impossible and the pandemic only made it worse. As of June 2021, COVID-19 killed over 190,000 people and 3 million fell into poverty once again. Now Peru has a new left wing president named Pedro Castillo. He won just 50.2% of the vote, which is only around 70,000 more votes out of 17.5m cast. Castillo barely beat Keiko Fujimori, the daughter of Alberto Fujimori, the autocrat and corrupt leader who ruled in the 1990s. People believe Castillo has a weak mandate and will preside over a bitterly divided country. He also has applauded socialists like Evo Morales in Bolivia and Nicolas Maduro in Venezuela, and he seems to sympathize with Communist Cuba. Now Keiko Fujimori is saying that the election was fraudulent and this likely won't help the bitter division between urban and rural Peruvians.    In this episode, Drew and Alex try to make sense of how a leftist and a right-wing candidate were the only options left, when there were eighteen candidates in the election. They also discuss what is next for Peru and whether the country can succeed, while also fending off the leftist policies that brought down Venezuela.

What do Che Guevara, Ronald Reagan, John F. Kennedy and Mark Harmon have in common? I'll tell you! At one point during this podcast's first season, my 89-year-old mom chose each of these men as sexual partners during the "Who Would you Make a Baby With?" segment of our show. Che beat out Nikita Krushchev, Reagan (AND his chimp, Bonzo) handily won over the young newlyweds Jimmy and Rosalynn Carter -- that's right, my mom chose an actor with a monkey over another future President and dignified humanitarian. That was back in Episode 2, where Rita hilariously first uttered the words "I'd tie the monkey down." THIS episode is something of a retrospective disguised as a playoff. Our listeners have spoken (loudly), demanding to know which one would Rita choose from all the men she's, um, loved before (thinking of the the Willie Nelson/Julio Iglesias ballad, except this one's inverse a la Willy Chirino/Dwight Yoakum! Well, maybe not, but either way, ya'll want a Baby Making Champion we gonna crown a Baby Making Champion!). In this episode, Che, Ronnie, JFK, and Marky Mark Harmon go up against each other in what could be described as a quarterfinal. Jorge prods Rita into discussing the pros/cons of each baby maker with the occasional detour into Communist Cuba's failed agricultural policies and good, ol' equity-slash-inclusion ("Why no Asians or people of darker colors??"). The winner will go on to compete against the upcoming (Episode 11) quarterfinal winner. Whoever Rita chooses in this episode will go on to face one of the following great men: Pope Francis, Augusto Pinochet, Elon Musk or Bernie Sanders. Get your headphones on and bring your A-Game. Nely Galan is the Former President of Telemundo and creator and producer of the FOX series "The Swan." She was the first Latina President of Entertainment for a U.S. television network and an Emmy Award winning producer of over 700 television shows. She founded The Adelante Movement to empower and train Latina and multicultural women. She is the bestselling author of Self Made: Becoming Empowered, Self-Reliant, and Rich in Every Way.   Podcast Highlights   Who is Nely Galan? Nely Galan is an immigrant, her parents fled Communist Cuba to the United States. Many of the people that have left Latin America or countries in the Caribbean have a lot of trauma and are often grateful just ot be somewhere else. Nely had to be her family’s translator, therapist, and accountant all by the time she was 5.   Her superhero moment happened when she was in the seventh grade. Her parents realized that she was great in school and put a bet on Nely. When you see your parents struggle to provide for you, you become a very empathetic person. It was then she decided that she had to figure out a way to help her parents and she began selling Avon out of her locker to help pay for her schooling.   Would you consider your history as an immigrant to be your unique advantage? Being an immigrant has given Nely values that most people in America have forgotten. She is self reliant and believes that she can do anything she sets her mind to. She also has a perspective that most people don’t about the state of the world. Nely feels like there is an immense divide in this country, and people need to be compassionate to people who journey to the US in order to better their lives. Nely was once accused of plagiarism while in her sophomore year of highschool and it was then she discovered that being empowered can change your life. Acting like a victim will not solve your problem. This experience actually became the springboard for Nely’s career working as one of the youngest editors at a magazine and getting into television. Getting Into Real Estate When you take a risk and do something from your pain, it can be the greatest decision you make and have the greatest impact. Making decisions with limited information is much easier when you are empathetic to other people. While working as employee #1 at the television station that would become Telemundo, Nely noticed that the owners were very interested in owning the building they were working out of. Asking someone to be your mentor is very off putting, instead put yourself in the life of mentors you want so you can overhear their conversations and understand how they operate. Put yourself in the path of opportunity. Not everyone is an entrepreneur day one, but if that’s what you want to do treat your job as if it were your business and think about what you would do. You can fast track your learning if you pay attention. When you make money, don’t waste it on bling. Buy real estate instead, someday the real estate will be worth more than your business. Work your business, but real estate is historically one of the best investments you can make. Responsibility Just because Nely’s career worked out really well, that doesn’t mean she thinks college is a waste of time. Nely went back to school when she was much older and she realized that despite her success, one of the things holding her back was that she never really lived through all the phases of her life. Going to school allowed her emotional self to catch up with her intellectual self. If we don’t see people like Nely who have succeeded, it’s harder to see ourselves succeeding as well. Nely discovered her mission and realized that she had to change the family

Last week I visited Cuba and it was an enlightening experience.  Imagine going to a city where it hasn’t been improved or maintained for 60 years… Yep, that’s the feeling I got when roaming the streets of Cuba. Everything is just really old, musty and colorless. People that have the mindset that government can provide prosperity is very laughable indeed. The government only consumes resources and allocates them in a very inefficient way compared to the private sector. On the world index, comparing countries prosperity, Cuba is ranked 177 and closely followed by the basket case, Venezuela. The government only gets in the way of prosperity!  We need to get more people to understand this!

Santa Barbara, California based Pilates instructor and dancer, Alejandro Ameijeiras shares his long, sometimes dark, road to personal acceptance and embodiment of his sexuality, sensitivity and inner power. Born in Communist Cuba to prominent Diplomats in 1963, he grew up in a culture, beautiful in many ways, but far from accepting of individual differences. He studied first as a professional swimmer, then in military school and eventually as a dancer. Being the son of a top General was at times in contrast to who he was and knew he wanted to be. Alejandro left Cuba in his late teens to train with the Bolshoi ballet in Moscow and traveled with the Tropicana troupe in East Germany and Italy right before the Berlin Wall came down. After further exploring his dancing and modeling career in Cuba, he finally left for Panama in 1995 and arrived in Miami on Christmas Eve in 1997. Years, and much dedicated internal work, later, he has created a dream life in California with a loving husband, thriving Pilates business and ever-evolving inner peace, due to his ongoing dedication to personal growth and self discovery.

On this episode, Jesse & Matt discuss the third most important element of The Golden Square which is so simple and obvious, that it's remarkable this idea is even contested as a human right in the Yankee-lands of Ol' Red, White and Blue: the absolute right to healthcare for every human being on Earth. Matthew will provide a surprising prologue about what's suddenly taken place in his personal life since this episode's initial recording and open up about his mother's life-long illness; in call & response fashion, Jesse will then talk about what it was like to get healthcare in Sarah-Palin-Land as a child. The co-hosts will also explore their personal relationships to this essential cornerstone to The Golden Square, and their own anxieties about having access to healthcare as middle-aged men with pre-existing conditions. Though he quickly assimilated into his new country and culture, and had no trouble mastering his new language, Cuba never left him. Cuba was always with him: inside him, driving him, calling him. He realized this more than ever when, in the 6th grade, he did his country report on Cuba and thus began a love affair with his homeland that continues to this day. It was only natural that Cuba should play a part in his writing, and even from grammar school age, Luis Gonzalez knew that writing was in his blood."
