If it's true that Minnesota's new state flag was inspired by the Jubaland flag of Somalia, then I think it's safe to say it's been conquered by its imported denizens - hope the one party Democrat rule was worth it. Plus, the left tearing down the reconciliation monument at Arlington National Cemetery is a clear warning; they do not seek reconciliation with us - they want us destroyed. And finally, homelessness is up another 12% to new record highs, with as many as 653,000 people now living on the streets. Somalia's political crisis has reached a worrying stage. Since his election in 2017, President Farmajo has pushed to strengthen the federal government's control, fuelling infighting between the government and member states. The decision to postpone upcoming elections has inflamed these already deteriorating relations. Meanwhile, Al-Shabaab continues to inflict violence and will likely benefit from this political disarray, and external actors compete for influence, using the country as a playground for their own interests. Crisis Group's Senior Analyst for Somalia Omar Mahmood joins Alan for the final episode of this season to discuss these worrying trends and the need for a consensus agreement over the electoral process. They also examine the skirmishes in Jubaland's Gedo region and their impact on wider regional dynamics. Thank you for joining us for this first season of the Horn. We would love to hear from you so if you have a few minutes to spare, please fill out this short survey: https://bit.ly/HornSurvey We will be back in September. Until then, stay safe!

On 22 February 2013, the Rift Valley Institute's Nairobi Forum hosted an event entitled ‘Somalia's Jubaland: Past, present and potential futures’. Jubaland has been one of the most heavily fought over regions of Somalia—but with its perennial river, fertile soils and the port city of Kismayo it has the potential to be one of Somalia’s most productive regions. The social bonds that bind and divide populations across the borders of Somalia, Kenya and Ethiopia, give this region a particularly important regional significance. This has been made abundantly clear by the presence of Kenyan and Ethiopian military forces in the region. The Nairobi Forum event was chaired by RVI Fellow Cedric Barnes, of the International Crisis Group.
Prof. Anderson (Oxford University) examines the tumultuous history in the Jubaland area of southern Somalia and northern Kenya at the turn of the 20th century. Professor David Anderson (Oxford University, African Studies Centre) presents research on the history of Jubaland, located in Southern Somalia and, previously until 1924, part of the Kenya colony and East African protectorate. Focused on the tumultuous history of British involvement in this area, Prof. Anderson uses the themes of Islam, imperialism(s), and transnational history to understand what was going on in this region at the turn of the 20th century. Anderson offers possible insights for the troubles facing this region today.
