Episode 99. Bonus For this Bonus episode, I've invited two British women, Lindsay Simmonds and Julie Siddiqi, both PhDs, to talk about their interfaith friendship and the public facing work they've done since Hamas' attack on Israel on 7 Oct. 2023. Lindsay is an Orthodox Jew and Julie is Muslim. The fact of their religious identities and deep practice is noteworthy and relevant, as the attack and subsequent war, have proven polarizing, straining the already challenging work of bridging religious differences between Jews and Muslims. Lindsay and Julie offer an inspiring example of possibility, showing us the path to connection, communication, and healing, while not shying away from the challenges. Given the long standing and apparent intransigence of the conflict, this seemed a good time for some hope.Highlights: Intersection of deep faith practice and interfaith work.Organizing inclusive events amidst tension.Impact and significance of their work. The role of space, gender, and representation.Trivializing women's impactful initiatives.Sustaining hope and setting intentions for the future. Bios: Dr. Lindsay Simmonds is a Research Fellow at the London School of Jewish Studies (LSJS) where she has lectured for 20+ years. She recently worked as a Researcher at the London School of Economics (LSE), UK, working on Women of Faith and Peacebuilding.Lindsay is very active in local interfaith work. She has five adult children and five grandchildren, and she promotes women's participation in her local orthodox Jewish community in London. Dr. Julie Siddiqi MBE is a mentor, consultant and gender equality campaigner with a focus on interfaith relations, applying that to social work. She has 25+ years of experience in community work predominantly in the Muslim community as well as in interfaith work. Julie is a qualified Life Coach. She was awarded an MBE in the Queen's Birthday Honours List of 2020 and an Honorary Doctorate from the University of Middlesex. She chose Islam in 1995 and is married with four children. In this episode of the Vienna Coffee House Conversations, Ivan Vejvoda is joined by historical scientist Luke Cooper to discuss Ukraine's resilience in the face of the ongoing Russian invasion and the broader geopolitical challenges facing the country. Cooper shares insights from his recent visits to cities like Kyiv, Dnipro, and Lviv, noting the surprising resilience and sense of normalcy among Ukrainians amidst conflict. He emphasizes the social and economic impacts of the war, including widespread displacement and the steadfast resolve of those in Russian-occupied regions awaiting liberation. The conversation explores Ukraine's economic strategies in response to the invasion, focusing on the government's shift from initially libertarian policies to a more Keynesian model that emphasizes public spending and wartime fiscal policy. Cooper explains how labor shortages, driven by both military conscription and migration, have impacted Ukraine's workforce, particularly in vital industrial sectors. These economic measures have helped stabilize the economy despite the ongoing challenges, but the Ukrainian government remains focused on sustaining external financial support to maintain its efforts. Finally, Cooper and Vejvoda consider the possible scenarios for ending the conflict, discussing public sentiment in Ukraine, the strategic importance of various frontlines, and the precarious international dependencies that affect the country's future. Cooper highlights the critical role of oil prices and international political dynamics, particularly in the United States, in shaping the war's trajectory. In closing, they briefly examine the UK's political landscape following the Labour Party's recent victory, noting its potential impact on UK-EU relations and international support for Ukraine since the full-scale Russian invasion.Luke Cooper is a historical sociologist and political scientist specializing in conflict, democracy, and European studies, currently serving as an Associate Professorial Research Fellow at the Conflict and Civicness Research Group at the London School of Economics (LSE). He directs the PeaceRep Ukraine Program and co-founded Another Europe is Possible, an advocacy group focused on progressive European politics. Additionally, Cooper is an established podcaster and author, whose most recent book, Authoritarian Contagion: The Global Threat to Democracy (2021) examines the global rise of authoritarianism. The blogpost mentioned in the episode on Oil's role in the Ukraine War is hereRead more and buy a copy of Authoritarian Contagion or find it on Amazon Luke Cooper's X account is @lukecooper100 Ivan Vejvoda is Head of the Europe's Futures program at the Institute for Human Sciences (IWM Vienna) implemented in partnership with ERSTE Foundation. Welcome to The Nonlinear Library, where we use Text-to-Speech software to convert the best writing from the Rationalist and EA communities into audio. This is: AI, Animals, and Digital Minds 2024 - Retrospective, published by Constance Li on June 19, 2024 on The Effective Altruism Forum. This is a retrospective of the AIADM 2024 Conference, Retreat, and Co-working in London. Tl;dr: ~130 people joined together over the span of three days to learn, connect, and make progress towards making AI safe for nonhumans. Background This event followed in the footsteps of the October 2023 Artificial Intelligence, Conscious Machines, and Animals: Broadening AI Ethics conference held at Princeton by Peter Singer, Tse Yip Fai, Leonie Bossert and Thilo Hagendorff. It was planned in a [formerly private] AI Coalition channel on the Hive Slack that many of the attendees of the original conference were invited to for the purposes of continuing conversation. It was here that I discovered that running the conference in 2024 would be highly counterfactual because Peter Singer was retiring from Princeton and none of the previous organizers were planning on repeating it. We were able to get permission to hold the second iteration of the conference and even got a promotional endorsement by Peter Singer. The process of planning took place over several months and was independently funded. Objective The goal for this event was to explore how we can develop AI technologies in a way that protects and benefits nonhuman animals and potentially sentient AI. We had the dual purpose of increasing the salience of the field of AI and Nonhumans and also getting potential leaders to network with one another. To advance the former goal, the content and programming needed to be highly accessible so we made it hybrid, recorded as much as practical, created website pages and social media assets for speakers to help with pre-conference promotion and future SEO for the speakers, and added more event space as the RSVPs crept up. It was open to anyone who could offer value to furthering this field, including, but not limited to, thought leaders, researchers, industry workers, funders and hopeful future contributors. Timing and location All in-person events took place in London immediately after EAG London (May 31 - June 2) June 3: Conference (hybrid: onsite - live room and overflow room, offsite - livestreaming, and virtual) June 4-5: Retreat (virtual and in-person options that only synced up during hour of livestreamed lightning talks) June 6-11: Co-working (in person) Attendees There were 260+ applications for attendance. A directory was created of people who consented to have their application answers shared with other attendees. These included answers to questions such as: What is your experience or demonstrated interest in the topic? Why do you want to attend? What can you offer to other attendees? Conference The 1st day was a hybrid conference: It took place at the London School of Economics (LSE), split between 2 rooms which had around 50-60 total attendees. It was also streamed live to Newspeak House which had 10-15 attendees. Around 50-70 people attended via zoom. We had a very tight schedule and prioritized having more time for Q&A so each talk was only 10 - 20 minutes long and we grouped similar talks together as panels. The Do One Better! Podcast – Philanthropy, Sustainability and Social Entrepreneurship
Larry Kramer, incoming President and Vice Chancellor of the London School of Economics (LSE), joins Alberto Lidji on the Do One Better Podcast to reflect on his 10+ years as President of the William and Flora Hewlett Foundation, discuss key lessons in philanthropy, and shed light on his aspirations for the LSE. The Hewlett Foundation is one of the world's largest philanthropic foundations and was a leading force in creating the field of climate philanthropy. Within the context of climate, we discuss collaboration; the progress that's been achieved in the field during the past decade; adaptation vs mitigation; investing vs divesting; shifting strategies from 'raising ambitions' to 'implementation'. Spoiler alert: the direction of travel on climate is positive. We explore the state of affairs in philanthropy and the key lessons Larry learned during his time as President of the Hewlett Foundation. Much ground is covered: from philanthropists' increased appetite for learning, experimentation, and collaboration; to encouraging journalists who cover the field of philanthropy to gain first-hand experience working in foundations; to trust-based philanthropy, and quite a bit more. We also hear of Larry's aspirations for the London School of Economics, which he describes as pretty much 'the' global institution unlike any other university, perfectly placed to leverage its social sciences prowess to tackle the world's most pressing problems. We learn what must be done to ensure the LSE achieves greatest impact. This episode will inform you and provide much food for thought. Please leave us a rating and a review. Join us every Monday for new and insightful conversations. Thank you for downloading this episode of the Do One Better Podcast. It Gets Late Early: Career Tips for Tech Employees in Midlife and Beyond
In raising the topic of the experience of aging in tech, a big question loomed for me: “What do experienced older workers bring to the table for their employers?” Today's guest has made answering this question his life's work. Daniel Jolles, a one-time tech consultant, is a researcher in behavioral science at the London School of Economics (LSE), studying to get his Ph.D. in Psychology. Daniel's studies apply behavioral science to age-diversity efforts and age inclusion in the workplace. His work at the LSE with the Inclusion Institute focuses on workplace generations and aging. In addition, Daniel supports research at the Age Equity Alliance, which focuses on age equity at work. So he is the perfect guest to discuss the topic at hand. Stick around to hear what the research says about persistent age bias in hiring and Daniel's take on why companies should ensure they have a wide age range represented in their employee ranks.“I do know from past data that when older workers are unemployed, they tend to spend longer being unemployed.” - Daniel JollesIn This Episode:-Learn a little bit about Daniel Jolles, what he does, his research, and his interest in the topic of age diversity and equity at work-Daniel shares his thoughts on workers enjoying the world while they still can vs. waiting until retirement before doing what they really want to do in life-Older Workers vs. Younger Workers - Breaking the Stereotypes and societal view on aging-Does Daniel's research support the hypothesis about the lack of acknowledgment for older people now? -Daniel shares the results of a simulated hiring decision where we see older candidates less likely to be selected-How do we show organizations what they're losing out on by not employing older workers and by not having an intergenerational workforce?-A key takeaway and an action item for you from today's conversationAnd more!Connect with Daniel Jolles:-LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/danieljolles/Connect with Maureen Clough:-Instagram: @itgetslateearly - https://www.instagram.com/itgetslateearly/-YouTube: @itgetslateearly - https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCGrHwk-y7ERaq7bCSjZYf1A?sub_confirmation=1-Website: itgetslateearly.com - https://www.itgetslateearly.com/-LinkedIn: maureenwclough - https://www.linkedin.com/in/maureenwclough/-Facebook: It Gets Late Early - https://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100088694515585This podcast

Do you believe that some people are just luckier than others even though they have not done anything special to create their good fortune? According to my guest this week, NYU Professor Christian Busch, good luck doesn't happen purely by chance. He says it can be learned and leveraged. In his book, The Serendipity Mindset: The Art and Science of Creating Good Luck, Christian explains that serendipity isn't about luck being out of our control. It's about seeing links that others don't, combining these observations strategically, and learning how to detect the moments when unconnected ideas merge to form new opportunities. Exploring serendipity from a scientific perspective, Christian argues that there are ways we can foster the conditions to allow serendipity to grow. Drawing from biology, chemistry, management, and information systems and using examples of people from all walks of life, he shows how you can use serendipity to make life better at work, at home, and everywhere. It is remarkable to note that Christian's early track record could not have predicted where he has landed today. In his own words, he was a restless, rebellious kid who was “in the 5% of the class that enabled the top 95%.” He dropped out of high school and, at eighteen, went wild in his first car, ending up in a near-fatal multi-car crash. Needless to say, and fortunately, this was a turning point for him. Christian finished high school and with determination applied to dozens of universities. Once accepted, he dove into his studies, fueling his curious mind. Christian went on to earn his master's degree and later a Ph.D. In this week's Work From The Inside Out podcast, follow Christian's journey and work: Christian is the director of the CGA Global Economy Program at New York University (NYU) and teaches at the London School of Economics (LSE). He is a co-founder of Leaders on Purpose and the Sandbox Network and a former director of LSE's Innovation Lab. He is a member of the World Economic Forum's Expert Forum, a Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts, and on the Thinkers50 Radar list of the 30 thinkers "most likely to shape the future." Summary Steve Jobs famously said, “You can't connect the dots looking forward; you can only connect them looking backward.” Today's guest would respectfully disagree. As guest Dr. Christian Busch writes, “serendipity is not just about a coincidence that happens to us, but it is actually through the process of spotting and connecting the dots do we start to see bridges where others see gaps.” This episode will explore that process. Thus, Serendipity is “unexpected good luck resulting from unplanned moments in which proactive decisions lead to positive outcomes. Serendipity is the hidden force in the world.” Serendipity is smart luck versus blind luck. Guest Dr. Christian Busch is the author of The Serendipity Mindset and an internationally known expert in the areas of innovation, purpose-driven leadership, and serendipity. He is the director of the CGA Global Economy Program at New York University (NYU), and also teaches at the London School of Economics (LSE). He is a co-founder of Leaders on Purpose and the Sandbox Network and a former director of LSE's Innovation Lab. Delegates are gathering in Sharm el-Sheikh, Egypt, for the COP27 UN climate change conference beginning on Sunday 6 November. But a lot has changed in the 12 months since attendees of the COP26 meeting in Glasgow promised bold action to tackle global warming. Russia invaded Ukraine sparking global inflation and rising energy prices. Relations between the United States and China have continued to sour. And extreme weather events have caused thousands of deaths across the planet. Last week a UN report concluded there's no longer any "credible pathway" to keeping the rise in global temperatures below the key threshold of 1.5C and that the world will warm by around 2.8C this century if current policies remain in place. So, what's on the agenda at COP27? Can the conference come up with solutions to the growing number of challenges posed by climate change? And how can we judge whether the meeting will be a success or a failure? Ritula Shah is joined by a panel of expert guests. Mohamed Nasheed - Former President of the Maldives, now an ambassador for the Climate Vulnerable Forum (CVF). Dr Jessica Omukuti - Research Fellow on net zero emissions, climate finance and climate justice at the University of Oxford. Nick Robins - Professor in Practice for Sustainable Finance at the Grantham Research Institute on Climate Change and the Environment at the London School of Economics (LSE). Also featuring ... This podcast interview focuses on product innovation that has the power to help us spot, hire & develop the right team for our performance culture … by amplifying the people characteristics that make our business remarkable. My guest is Dr. Patrick Oehler, Co-Founder, and Co-CEO of Retorio. Patrick Oehler was born in Munich, Germany. After graduating from high school, he studied information-oriented business administration at the University of Augsburg and Management & Strategy at the London School of Economics (LSE). Subsequently, he completed his doctorate in Organizational Research at the Technical University of Munich, where he researched behavioral patterns in organizations. This is where he and his co-founder and co-CEO Christoph Hohenberger stumbled upon a big idea that would spark the birth of Retorio. Retorio is on a mission to create a world where people feel accepted, satisfied, and fulfilled in their work, relationships, and company culture. How? By spotting success patterns in teams, hiring matching talents, and developing them into top performers. And this inspired me, and hence I invited Patrick to my podcast. We explore what's broken in the way we do recruitment today, particularly in large organizations. Patrick shares how 'simply' changing the order of doing creates a revolution - one that creates unbeatable organizations. He digs into how he created traction by niching down and homing in on the most valuable and critical use case. He shares a fascinating story about how he ignored advice from investors on who to target/ not to target - and with that, found a market that's prepared to pay a premium and now represents 80% of the revenue. Last but not least, he shares his experience on what it takes to create a software business that cannot be ignored. Here's one of his quotes "Our investor told us 'don't sell to these clients because they're way too big, they're way too complicated - don't do enterprise sales. You don't know how to do that. You must go for the small ones, this way you can scale way more quickly.' And we always tried to do that, but then once again, the enterprise clients signed up and they were like, 'We're gonna pay more, and we're gonna pay more.' And they offered us big amounts of money to use the technology. And at some point, we said, okay, maybe we should stop resisting.' During this interview, you will learn four things: How flipping the process can be the key to creating a product that creates a revolutionary impact How a compelling vision can attract critical resources to your startup that are even prepared to work for free How to break the barriers to getting customers to sign up for demos Why your go to market should be ultra specific, even though your platform can support 100s of use cases For more information about the guest from this week: Dr. Patrick Oehler Website Retorio Subscribe to the Daily Value Inspiration Get my free, 2 min daily reflection on shaping a B2B SaaS business no one can ignore. We've all met those folks who seem to have horseshoes inserted in their rectums. Things just seem to work out for them. Do the Gods favor them, or could there be a science of luck? There's a reasonable assumption that talent, skill, mental toughness, hard work, tenacity, optimism, growth mindset, and emotional intelligence determine how we distribute resources. We tend to give resources to those who have a history of success and often ignore those who have been unsuccessful, assuming that the most successful are also the most competent. But is this assumption correct? In recent years, several studies and books, including those by risk analyst, Nassim Taleb, have suggested that luck and opportunity may play a far more significant role than we ever realized. Even if you don't believe in luck, you undoubtedly have had moments that seemed to have certain serendipity. I'm curious, have you ever considered that you may be able to manufacture that serendipity? Our guest for the next two episodes is Dr. Christian Busch. Christian is one of the world's leading experts in innovation, purpose-driven leadership, and serendipity.
