Every great story begins somewhere, and the world home run king's journey to 868 career home runs began 66 years ago this week, when Sadaharu Oh hit his first career home run. To celebrate that, and the man who became a baseball god on the other side of the globe, Mike and Bill talk to MLB.com's Michael Clair. During the Tokyo Series to kick off the 2025 regular season, Michael scored a rare interview with the great Oh-san, and has lots to say about what it's like to meet a living legend. Plus, happy birthday to Mickey Morandini and Ted Easterly! And farewell to Sandy Valdespino and Frank Saucier.

Amy Chavez talks with Robert Whiting about his recently released book Gangsters, Fraudsters, Dreamers & Spies: The Outsiders Who Shaped Modern Japan (Tuttle, April, 2024). They talk about strong women characters such as an Australian bar hostess named Maggie who became famous for using scissors to cut off customers' neckties  and a female yakuza gangster who carried a revolver in her purse. And if you think Japan doesn't have a drug problem, think again. Whiting talks about North Korean drug smuggling and its contribution to a surging number of meth users. Lastly, while most tourists to Japan can't help but be impressed by Japanese taxi drivers who wear white gloves and deliver impeccably polite service, things weren't always that way in Japan. In fact, taxi drivers used to be rude and dirty, and the job was so loathsome that Japanese wives were embarrassed to tell people their husbands were taxi drivers! Whiting tells us about the MK Taxi company that was started by a Korean who was determined to change all that.At the end of the podcast, Whiting tells us what he's reading right now:The Coldest Winter: America and the Korean War, by David HalberstamCareless Love: The Unmaking of Elvis Presley, by Peter Guralnick The Books on Asia Podcast is sponsored by Stone Bridge Press. I've been a devoted fan of Robert Whiting since I first read "Chrysanthemum and the Bat" in high school during the 1980s. After many critically acclaimed books, I had the opportunity to sit down with Bob to discuss his latest memoir, "Tokyo Junkie: 60 Years of Bright Lights and Back Alleys... and Baseball." In our conversation, Bob shares his firsthand insights into six decades of captivating, dangerous, bizarre, and heartfelt experiences, spanning from the first Olympics in 1964 to the current 2021 games.
