While multiple studies show that we are experiencing mental health crises, burnout, and stress at alarming levels, I don't have to tell you that you're feeling it. It impacts your ability and your team's ability to perform at the highest level. To innovate, problem solve, and focus. Some workplace stress is a given, but what about the stress we can control? The stress caused by a culture and a leader who refuses to recognize our humanity? The leader who does not value empathy, connection, well-being, or psychological safety as a way to empower their people to achieve success.Today, I talk with Marisol Solarte-Erlacher about the price you pay for toxic and psychologically unsafe cultures and how that impacts business performance. We discuss why chronic stress is an issue, how it impacts leadership and performance, and what it looks like to put employee well-being at the center of your business strategy. Marisol shares how to make the culture shift in your own team to prioritize well-being in meaningful ways, not just surface-level perks. She offers three questions you can ask your team to discern if they feel psychologically safe, and she shares how you can make the business case for well-being so your people can thrive and your company can achieve its goals. To access the episode transcript, please scroll down below.Key Takeaways:The pandemic gave everyone the ability to pause and actually question if the way we have always done things is the only or best way to do things.Being in a constant state of stress takes a long-term toll on our bodies and health.Do assessments with yourself and your team to understand what the biggest stressors are at any given point. To assess psychological safety, you can ask three questions: What are the things in the workplace that cause you the most stress? How do you handle those? How do you ask for help? "This is about the long-term investment of your culture for the overall well-being and sustainability of your organization." — Marisol Solarte-ErlacherEpisode References:The Empathy Edge podcast:Rebecca Friese: How to Build a “Good” CultureAnna Liotta: Understanding Generational CodesFrom Our Partner:SparkEffect partners with organizations to unlock the full potential of their greatest asset: their people. Welcome back to The DC Beer Show, your hop-forward source for all things craft beer in the DMV! This episode finds our dynamic crew—Jake, Mike, Brandy, and Jordan—diving headfirst into the fascinating world of hops and modern brewing with special guest Shana Solarte, Marketing Communications Manager at John I. Haas.Kicking off with the usual “what's in your glass?” roundtable, the hosts compare notes on a fresh selection of IPAs (with more than one nod to Other Half), a Peabody Heights pilsner, and shout-outs to local beer reps. Brandy brings a little Cinco de Mayo energy, complete with margaritas and hopes for more info on her beer can labels! The heart of the show belongs to Shana, who joins from Chicago—but don't worry, her reach into the DC beer scene runs deep. She shares the inside scoop on John I. Haas' partnership with the Michael James Jackson Foundation (MJF), an organization supporting scholarships for brewers and distillers of color. Shana explains the creative process behind MJF's exclusive hop blend, involving sensory panels, blind tastings, and even a bit of Garrett Oliver Jedi mind-trickery. We hear about how the blend gives back—$5 per pound sold goes straight to MJF, supporting the next wave of brewing talent. The episode shifts gears to demystify the buzz around “flowable hop products.” Shana breaks down what they are (think super-concentrated hop flavor minus the leafy waste), the benefits for brewers (better efficiency, more beer to pour), and how products like Incognito are changing the IPA game—especially with Mosaic fans in the house.Throughout the show, Shana's passion for beer education and inclusivity shines. From her Cicerone roots to her time at Dovetail and Omega Yeast, she emphasizes continual learning and translating geeky hop science into language every beer enthusiast can dig.As always, there's plenty of DC Beer community spirit. Brandy highlights upcoming local events: the Maryland Craft Beer Festival in Frederick (shoutout to female and non-binary brewers!), a DC Brau beer share, and a full calendar for beer lovers all summer long. Mike gives a special mention to the Arlington Brew Shop beer of the month, a Czech pale lager brewed by Bluejacket, and Jacob reminds us that beer is for everyone (moms very much included).Grab a hoppy IPA (or your favorite local lager), settle in, and let The DC Beer Show guide you through innovative hop science, the importance of diversity in brewing, and all that's brewing in our vibrant local beer scene. Toxic pollution kills 12.6 million people every year—nearlyone-quarter of all global deaths – and 92% of these deaths occur in middle or low-income countries. Yet despite its deadliness, environmental harms are oftena slow-moving and long-standing problem, which can be difficult to detect and thus “invisible” in some ways which result in inaction and complacency. So what can be done? In her book “Slow Harms and Citizen Action: Environmental Degradation and Policy Change in Latin American Cities”, Professor Veronica Herrera asks: When and how do people mobilize around slow harms? By examining the cases of Buenos Aires, Bogotá and Lima, the book looks at how citizen movements can push the state to implement environmental rights protections, and how ideas about pollution as a policy problem become institutionalized. This episode was hosted by Sebastián Solarte. Sebastián is a PhD Candidate at the UCLA Institute of the Environment and Sustainability. In his research, he uses a political ecology lens to study grassroots movements aiming to overcome energy poverty in rural Colombia. Beyond his work, he is passionate about exploring places with his bicycle and finding new food spots.Veronica Herrera, our guest, is an Associate Professor ofUrban Planning and Political Science in the Luskin School of Public Affairs at the University of California, Los Angeles. I study the political economy of development and environmental politics and policy, with a focus on cities, civil society, and Latin America.

With powerful insights that stem from her personal resilience path, she highlights the importance of storytelling, cultural identity, and finding joy amidst adversity. Childhood Memories:Growing up with young parents, Marisol matured alongside them, becoming highly responsible from an early age. Though her parents created moments of joy, she often felt more like a little adult. Observing intergenerational trauma, interpersonal violence, and alcoholism in her family shaped her understanding of relationships and coping mechanisms. At 11, Marisol survived sexual assault, a defining event in her adolescence. During this time, she read I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings by Maya Angelou, realizing that resilience was possible. This book gave her hope and reinforced her belief in the power of stories to heal and transform.Cultural Influences:Marisol's cultural identity shapes her values, relationships, and approach to life. She learned that family extends beyond biological ties, fostering deep loyalty to those who support her.Her strong work ethic comes from witnessing her parents' dedication, a trait she links to the immigrant experience. Though she now prioritizes balance, her drive remains rooted in these lessons. She also embraces the joy in her culture, recognizing how her family celebrated life even in hardship. This understanding deepened when she visited Colombia at 16, where she experienced resilience and joy first-hand.Influential Groups:Marisol grew up Catholic but transitioned to evangelicalism in her teens, seeking belonging and certainty after trauma. This shift led her to seminary in Denver, a transformative experience that ultimately guided her toward a different spiritual path focused on personal growth.During seminary, she joined the Circle of Latina Leadership, which shaped her leadership skills and personal development. Though her spirituality has evolved, her search for belonging continues to influence her journey and work today.Personality and Temperament:As a child, Marisol was introspective and often engaged in solitary activities. Being an only child for seven years, she navigated a complex environment on her own, shaping her personality. As the eldest daughter in a Latinx family, she naturally took on a parent-like role, becoming highly responsible. This led her to a profession where others seek her guidance. She values her reflective and soulful nature, traits she believes are innate. What Brings Out the Best in Marisol? For Marisol, being authentic in her work as a therapist is both important and challenging. She strives to be fully herself despite power dynamics and the complexities of client expectations.Support the show
