Next year, Paramount Pictures is going to try and turn Dungeons and Dragons into the next huge fantasy franchise. Indeed, Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves has it all - a huge budget, a cast of stars (including Chris Pine) and people behind the scenes who take it seriously. It's a far cry from the first, disastrous attempt to turn the famous RPG game into a franchise, 2000's mostly forgotten Dungeons & Dragons, which starred a scenery-chewing Jeremy Irons as an evil mage. The cast mainly consisted of young actors, including Justin Whalin, Marlon Wayans and Thora Birch. Produced by New Line Cinema, it was very much in the vein of their Mortal Kombat movies, and fans of the iconic game, who were legion, were not impressed. The film only grossed a measly $33 million, and the only follow-up it spawned was a made-for-TV sequel forgotten by time.So what went wrong? In this episode of WTF Happened to this Movie, we dig into the RPG's origins, the hype surrounding it, and the choice of Courtney Solomon to direct what everyone, I assumed, hoped would launch a franchise. We also look back at how this was a different time for fantasy films, with New Line's own Lord of the Rings trilogy (which began only a year after this came out) showing everyone how lucrative a movie based on a fantasy property could be - if done right. This was definitively NOT done right. This episode of WTF Happened to this Movie is written and narrated by Dave Davis, edited by Paul Podeyn and produced by Ben Cantler. In the late '80s renowned television writer Don Reo developed a show based on the novel The Catcher in the Rye. The idea was to create a series about a wise-beyond-his-years, introspective teenage boy. NBC loved the screenplay but had one change, make theain character a girl. From this "Blossom" was born. Mayim Bialik was cast for the lead role and the Pilot episode was aired on July 1990 as a tester and after a little retooling premiered with a full season six months later. A new Dungeons and Dragons movie arrives in theatres this month, so we thought we'd take a look back at the very first attempt to bring the beloved role-playing phenomenon to the screen. As two first-level novices, Dan and Conrad needed an expert Dungeon Master to guide them through this early 2000s CGI-fest, so the sage-like Michael French of RetroBlasting joins them. At least, he does until his Internet took pity and set him free from the spectacle of PlayStation 1 cut-screen establishing shots, Jeremy Irons devouring the scenery and spitting it venomously back out, and evil henchmen in frosty blue lipstick. Eight years after Chucky's second demise, the Play Pals company resumes manufacturing Good Guy dolls and re-opens the abandoned factory. A splash of blood from Chucky's corpse is inadvertently mixed in with the plastic being used to produce the dolls, reviving him in a new body. Chucky is given to Play Pals CEO Mr. Sullivan. Chucky strangles him to death, then uses computer records to locate Andy Barclay. Now 16, Andy has been sent to Kent Military Academy. Colonel Cochrane, the school's commandant, advises Andy to forget his "fantasies" about the doll. Andy befriends cadets Harold Aubrey Whitehurst; Ronald Tyler, an 8-year-old cadet; and Kristin DeSilva, for whom he develops romantic feelings. He also meets Brett C. The film was formally greenlit after the successful release of its predecessor with a release date nine months away. Mancini initially wanted to introduce the concept of "multiple Chuckys" in the movie, but due to budget constraints the idea was eventually scrapped. Mancini later used this concept for the 2017 sequel Cult of Chucky. It also was intended to open with a scene of a security guard portrayed by John Ritter frightening off a group of trespassing children at the Good Guys factory by telling them scary stories about Chucky. After Mancini decided to make Andy Barclay 16 years old, he considered recasting the role with Jonathan Brandis before hiring Justin Whalin. Before Jack Bender became director, Mancini wanted to hire Peter Jackson. A suggested link with the film was made after the brutal murder of James Bulger. The killers, who were ten years old at the time, were said to have imitated a scene in which one of Chucky's victims is splashed with blue paint. Although these allegations against the film have never been proven, the case led to some new legislation for video films. Psychologist Guy Cumberbatch stated, "The link with a video was that the father of one of the boys – Jon Venables – had rented Child's Play 3 some months earlier." However, the police officer who directed the investigation, Albert Kirby, found that the son, Jon, was not living with his father at the time and was unlikely to have seen the film. Moreover, the boy disliked horror films—a point later confirmed by psychiatric reports. Thus the police investigation, which had specifically looked for a video link, concluded there was none. We're joined by Paul4AllSeasons, of Twitch and Tumblr fame.   The popular tabletop RPG Dungeons & Dragons had long been beloved when this film was released. But the director rolled a crit-fail in execution, hitting bad acting, poor effects, and even racism on the fumble chart.   Dungeons & Dragons stars Justin Whalin, Jeremy Irons, Thora Birch, and Marlon Wayans.
