No precisely about John Milton's "Paradise Lost", but a poetic interpretation of the Hip Hop landmark song: "Gansta's Paradise". A single by American rapper Coolio, which was released on August 1, 1995 by Tommy Boy, Warner Bros. and MCA. Interpolating or sampling Stevie Wonder's song "Pastime Paradise" (1976 -double album Songs In "The Key Of Life"). In addition, the composition features vocals from American singer [[L.V.]], won a Grammy Award, and was credited for changing the course of Hip Hop by bringing it to a wider audience, besides the song was commissioned for the soundtrack of the movie "Dangerous Minds" in which Michelle Pfeiffer played as teacher and ex-marine": "LouAnne Johnson" . "Gangsta's Paradise" became a protest song that criticized violence and life in the marginalized neighborhoods focusing on the need for social change. It is like "César Vallejo" coined: "Every brilliant voice comes from the people and returns to them." PS. We present our review of The Substitute/The Principal/187!The genre of "high schools in trouble" movies evolved significantly from the late 1980s into the mid-1990s, beginning with a foundation of inspirational redemption dramas and mutating into gritty action thrillers. It began earnestly with films like Lean on Me (1989), Stand and Deliver (1988), and Dangerous Minds (1995). These movies centered on teachers and administrators fighting to reclaim failing schools, emphasizing personal transformation, student empowerment, and systemic reform. The stakes were social and emotional — saving lives through education, not violence. However, as the '90s progressed — and as American cultural anxiety about crime, urban decay, and "out-of-control youth" intensified — the "high schools in trouble" narrative hardened. Instead of inspirational teachers winning hearts and minds, later films portrayed literal battles for survival against criminal elements within the schools.Movies like The Principal (1987), The Substitute (1996), and One Eight Seven (187) (1997) transformed the setting from a battlefield of ideas to an actual battlefield. Authority figures were no longer educators first — they became enforcers. Characters like James Belushi's Principal Latimer, Tom Berenger's mercenary-turned-substitute Shale, and Samuel L. Jackson's haunted teacher Trevor Garfield had to physically fight gangs, drug dealers, and violent students. Education was almost incidental — survival and order became the goal. Thus, the genre evolved:From teachers trying to save troubled studentsTo teachers trying to survive troubled studentsThis transition also reflects the broader cultural fears of the 1990s: urban schools were increasingly depicted as hopeless, violent zones where idealism wasn't enough — only strength and retaliation would do.By the end of the '90s, this cycle largely burned out. The action-heavy "high schools in trouble" subgenre gave way to other approaches, like the more psychological horror of The Faculty (1998) or the satirical dark comedy of Teaching Mrs. Tingle (1999). The idea of schools as battlegrounds didn't disappear, but the way Hollywood depicted them shifted with the times.Disclaimer: The following may contain offensive language, adult humor, and/or content that some viewers may find offensive – The views and opinions expressed by any one speaker does not explicitly or necessarily reflect or represent those of Mark Radulich or W2M Network.Mark Radulich and his wacky podcast on all the things:https://linktr.ee/markkind76alsohttps://www.teepublic.com/user/radulich-in-broadcasting-networkFB Messenger: Mark Radulich LCSWTiktok: @markradulichtwitter: @MarkRadulichInstagram: markkind76RIBN Album Playlist: https://suno.com/playlist/91d704c9-d1ea-45a0-9ffe-5069497bad59

"There are no victims in this classroom!" Michelle Pfieffer is a whitefish out of water in the 1995 hit, Dangerous Minds. Pfieffer plays Louanne Johnson, an ex-marine divorcee down on her luck. Her only prospect, it seems, is to attempt to teach a gaggle of "passionate" high school kids, most of whom happen to be (gasp!) teenagers of color. Cue "Gangsta's Paradise"! Yes, back in the 90s, mainstream films were fairly black-and-white. But now, decades later, does this white savior storyline get a pass because it's based on a true story? Is Michelle the mousiest of ex-Marines ever? And why do some of these kids look 30? The Old Roommates head to the principal's office and give all the drama a rewatch through their middle-aged lens. Richard Metzger is a television host, author, and the creative mind behind the provocative TV show Disinformation, which aired on Channel 4 in the UK. He was also my first boss out of college, when I worked for him as the books editor at the Disinformation Company; we later co-founded the website Dangerous Minds together with other friends. Richard was a formative mentor in my early career, and he and his co-founder Gary Baddeley were responsible for launching it by greenlighting my first book Generation Hex (at the tender age of 21!) in 2003. Richard's latest project Magick Show is a documentary designed by occultists for occultists, and is currently Kickstarting. The project aims to explore the world of modern occultism through in-depth conversations with over 50 leading figures in the field, including authors, scholars, and practicing magicians. Richard and I hadn't talked in about a decade, but had a really great (and very, very high) time catching up and talking about magick, Richard's new project, and the state of the world. You're very much going to enjoy this long overdue conversation. Make sure to check out Magick Show on Kickstarter - only a few days remain! Links & Resources:

With Christopher Nolan now an Oscar-winner, this particular episode of Film Stories begins by zipping back to 2017, when he had a his first serious drive-by of the Academy Awards. That'd be with Dunkirk, the first time he told a true story on film. It took him a long time to be in a position where he felt confident enough to make the film - and even then, he faced some pretty significant technical and logistical challenges to get it made.Even before he asked Warner Bros for the money to make it it.Back in the mid-1990s meanwhile, uber-producers Don Simpson and Jerry Bruckheimer - best known for the likes of Flashdance and Top Gun - had acquired an unusual project for them, an inspirational teacher film based on a true story. The author of that story, LouAnne Johnson, was alert to working with Hollywood though, and absolutely wouldn't be bowing down to people who thought they were Hollywood royalty. The film Dangerous Minds would, too, take some liberties with her story.Stories of both of these films are told in this very episode... Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

Chaos: Charles Manson, The CIA And The Secret History Of The Sixties by Tom O'Neill (Part 2) - Audioboy https://tom-oneill.org/ Tom O'Neill is a writer and editor who has written for daily newspapers (Philadelphia Inquirer, New York Daily News) as well as national magazines and news weeklies (Village Voice, New York, Premiere, Details, Out, Philadelphia, Irish-America, Live, Detour). As a contributing editor at Us magazine (1991-1999) he wrote cover stories on some of the entertainment industry's biggest stars (Tom Cruise, Harrison Ford, Richard Gere) while reporting from the sets of hit television shows (Saturday Night Live, Fraiser, Northern Exposure). His first investigative story for Us, about the cut-throat battles waged by daytime talk-show producers for their guests (“Welcome to the Jungle”), spawned the magazine's popular investigative series, “The Us Report.” A subsequent story for the series by O'Neill, about the stalking and murder of actress Rebecca Schaeffer by a deranged fan (“Dangerous Minds”), was, in turn, used as the prototype for what would become the now-iconic E! Channel documentary series, E! True Hollywood Story. O'Neill's investigation into the unsolved slaying of a Hollywood starlet for Details magazine (“The Life and Death of Miss Hollywood”) was also adapted into a True Hollywood Story by the E! Channel and his expose of sexism at Saturday Night Live (“The Incredible Shrinking Woman of Saturday Night Live“) won an Exceptional Merit Media Award from the National Women's Political Caucus and Radcliffe College in 1995. Since 1999, O'Neill has been researching a book about one of the most sensational crimes of the last century, the murder of actress Sharon Tate and others by the Manson Family. O'Neill graduated with a Bachelor in Fine Arts from New York University's Tisch School of the Arts. He currently resides in Venice, CA. https://tom-oneill.org/about/ Audio taken from: https://odysee.com/@audioboy:7/chaos-charles-manson:b

Welcome to the Beehive! It's the 100th and final episode ever of the Rock Under Fire podcast. It's all about hot takes as Mike Derrico is joined by Marisa Baldassaro, Heather Drain and Michael Lee Nirenberg in over two hours of too many topics to list. But we'll try...let's see...there's random takes on Chuck Berry, the early days of the Internet, Joy Division, Brian Eno, the Gun Club, Def Leppard, Michael Monroe, Iron Maiden, Thin Lizzy, the Traveling Wilburys, Tom Petty, Billy Joel, Phil Collins, Marisa's Vince Neil imitation, about a dozen different takes on Kiss, including the question..."is Kiss misogynistic," and a whole lot more. It must have been in the stars, but we saved the most insane episode by far...for last. Thanks to all our supporters over the years. We had a small audience but we had a blast. Thanks for listening. Peace. luv, rock and roll... Rock Under Fire host, Mike Derrico is a freelance writer, pop cultural historian, and author of the books, AUTUMN AND EVERYTHING AFTER: The Murder of John Lennon, Evolution of Bruce Springsteen & the Birth of the Reagan Era (2020), THE LOCKER NOTES, a novel (2021), and the forthcoming ...AND THE CATHEDRAL FELL TO THE GROUND: The Lonesome Death of Rock and Roll (November 2023). Michael Lee Nirenberg, in his fourth time on the podcast, is a writer and director whose most celebrated recent works have been his 2014 documentary Back Issues: The Hustler Magazine Story, and his 2020 book Earth A.D. the Poisoning of the American Landscape and the Communities That Fought Back. Heather Drain, in her second Rock Under Fire guest spot, is a writer who veers between the worlds of esoterica film, wild music, heart-born words, and prose that is dark, rich, quirky, and often undefinable. In the nonfiction realm, her work has appeared on the print and digital pages of Dangerous Minds, Diabolique, Video Watchdog, Art Decades, just to name a few. Her prose has appeared in both the Women in Horror Annual, as well as the 2020 anthology, The Blind Dead Ride Out of Hell: A Literary Tribute to the Amando de Ossorio. Marisa Baldassaro is a writer and fellow hater currently putting the finishing touches on her latest project, a Dory Previn zine, discussed earlier this season on Rock Under Fire (Ep. 79). Marisa has also co-hosted several episodes of Rock Under Fire during Season 3. The Equalizer Season 4 Episode 2: Sea of Fire Aired on CBS: November 2, 1988 Directed by: Alan Metzger Story by : Peter McCabe, Teleplay by : Peter McCabe & Coleman Luck Featuring: Keith David, Reginald VelJohnson, David Strathairn (!), Seret Scott There is another street gang in the Equalizer universe, and just like the others, it has no apparent business plan or any kind of plan really outside of revelling in being terrors in their community. This gang, the Demon Lords, commit a crime in their high school much much worse than their otherwise Greasers "spitballs and goofing in the hallways" demeanor. Equalizer is on the case as a teacher this time, going all Dangerous Minds on them. Also Mickey's got a spiffy new short haircut which sparks Chris to think back to his skateboarding past. @equalizerspod equalizerspodcast at gmail dot com https://www.facebook.com/equalizerspodcast/

As I walk through the valley in the shadow of death ... RIP to Coolio who died last week at the gone too soon age of 59! We'll miss him but continue to jam out to Gangsta's Paradise on the reg and so thought it would be fitting to watch Dangerous Minds this week! From 1995 and starring the gorg Michelle Pfeiffer, Dangerous Minds felt like a movie all the cool kids were watching what with the killer soundtrack and look at the gritty life of kids from the projects in LA and it fell into the popular cinematic theme of teacher saves "bad" kids which Hollywood loves! Well turns out these kids weren't that dangerous at all - and we were slightly underwhelmed! Where were the drugs? The guns? Sure, one kid got shot by a gang member and there was a preggo team but come on ... dangerous? We talk about how the real danger in this movie is the chain smoking - eek cigarettes are so 90s!, who are favorite troubled teen is (Team Raul!) and how we're glad they decided not to use the same title for the movie as the book this is based on - My Posse Doesn't Do Homework. Ouch.
THE THESIS: You have likely been identified by The Party as processing a dangerous mind. You resisted the Covid tyranny. Many of us refused to take the knee to any acts of Covid theater. Despite the chanting of “safest and most secure” by The Party you continue to have concerns about dramatic, statistically unlikely lead changes at 4:30 AM in five key states after vote-counting has supposed to have stopped. God's Word is either paramount to you or meaningful and you will not pretend boys are girls, debt is wealth, Biden is in charge and America is not being invaded. You have a dangerous mind and that means you scare all the right people. The Party tells us about their fears every time they ratchet up their attacks on skepticism and questions. THE SCRIPTURE & SCRIPTURAL RESOURCES: Proverbs 30:5-6 Every word of God is tested; He is a shield to those who take refuge in Him. Do not add to His words Or He will reprove you, and you will be proved a liar. Psalm 78:5-8 He established a testimony in Jacob and appointed a law in Israel, which he commanded our fathers to teach to their children, that the next generation might know them, the children yet unborn, and arise and tell them to their children, so that they should set their hope in God and not forget the works of God, but keep his commandments; and that they should not be like their fathers, a stubborn and rebellious generation, a generation whose heart was not steadfast, whose spirit was not faithful to God. 1 Peter 1:24-25 For, “All flesh is like grass, And all its glory like the flower of grass. The grass withers, And the flower falls off, But the word of the Lord endures forever.” And this is the word which was preached to you. THE NEWS & COMMENT The Party is so afraid of Dangerous Minds that they are going beyond pretend fact-checking, which is almost universally known to be lies, and into giving the sam e ”fact-checkers” the ability to be super-users who can pop into your social media timeline and leave a super-comment. Facebook to let “fact checkers” comment on posts that “may not be verifiably false” And, it's groups like this with which Facebook partners. This is what (used to be) a scientific journal announcing it will not publish any scientific studies that may hurt people's feelings--even if the papers are solidly based in scientific rigor. The Party is fully aware that “men are women” is not working and “your mask protects me and my mask protects you” has utterly failed, so they are responding with fear. Science journal makes new announcement about its right to censor; "Content that undermines...the rights and dignities of an individual or human group on the basis of socially constructed or socially relevant human groupings." If we want this all to stop then THIS is the path forward: Collin College administrators are personally liable for firing professor over social media posts, judge rules. A First Amendment violation. I reject the notion of “toxic masculinity” because no group is toxic and masculinity has nothing in common with beating women or raping them, that's a criminal act and a massive sin problem that deserves harsh punishment. That said, Andrew Tate--the “reality” TV personality cum MME type fighter and now super-influencer of 18 - 29 year young men--does suggest young men and boys do some horribly violent things to women. It's for that YouTube is said to have banned him, and Rumble to adopt him. [AUDIO] - How the king of toxic masculinity corrupted a generation: Andrew Tate's diatribes against women saw him get more Google hits than Donald Trump last month - until he was banned by social media giants Andrew Tate's narrative control is 'completely stacked against him': Rumble CEO There is no chance YouTube is bothered by violence and misogyny. This is a filthy, violent, disgusting, misogynistic “song” by some guy called Playboy Carti. All I needed do to find it was ask a teen girl the name of the worst rapper. LANGUAGE WARNING! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HvO7TxLV6l0 Tate is well spoken and sharp, he knows what he's doing, here with Tucker. He also touches on why I think The Party is really trying to ban him. [AUDIO] - BANNED Andrew Tate on Tucker Carlson Show He has a Dangerous Mind (yes, he really does say dangerous things about women, disgusting things, in fact and he should repent). But, Tate speaks to young men about refusing the “slave-mind”, about choosing only “high-quality friends” and “men of quality to work beside” not “lazy men who smoke pot a play video games all day,” Andrew Tate is referring to the type of men The Party wants to populate the Country as lazy and low-quality. In my opinion, it is that and not his misogyny that scares them. The Party fears Andrew Tate because he doesn't fear The Party and because he speaks of self-sufficiency and hard work. These are the exact attributes The Party has spent decades attacking in America. PERSONAL NOTE On the quiet masculinity of my Grandpa. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
