WTF Happened to DUNGEONS & DRAGONS (2000)? WTF Happened to this movie?!

Next year, Paramount Pictures is going to try and turn Dungeons and Dragons into the next huge fantasy franchise. Indeed, Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves has it all - a huge budget, a cast of stars (including Chris Pine) and people behind the scenes who take it seriously. It's a far cry from the first, disastrous attempt to turn the famous RPG game into a franchise, 2000's mostly forgotten Dungeons & Dragons, which starred a scenery-chewing Jeremy Irons as an evil mage. The cast mainly consisted of young actors, including Justin Whalin, Marlon Wayans and Thora Birch. Produced by New Line Cinema, it was very much in the vein of their Mortal Kombat movies, and fans of the iconic game, who were legion, were not impressed. The film only grossed a measly $33 million, and the only follow-up it spawned was a made-for-TV sequel forgotten by time.So what went wrong? In this episode of WTF Happened to this Movie, we dig into the RPG's origins, the hype surrounding it, and the choice of Courtney Solomon to direct what everyone, I assumed, hoped would launch a franchise. We also look back at how this was a different time for fantasy films, with New Line's own Lord of the Rings trilogy (which began only a year after this came out) showing everyone how lucrative a movie based on a fantasy property could be - if done right. This was definitively NOT done right. This episode of WTF Happened to this Movie is written and narrated by Dave Davis, edited by Paul Podeyn and produced by Ben Cantler. Is Dungeons and Dragons the movie as bad as we remember? Let us know in the comments!

A new Dungeons and Dragons movie arrives in theatres this month, so we thought we'd take a look back at the very first attempt to bring the beloved role-playing phenomenon to the screen. As two first-level novices, Dan and Conrad needed an expert Dungeon Master to guide them through this early 2000s CGI-fest, so the sage-like Michael French of RetroBlasting joins them. At least, he does until his Internet took pity and set him free from the spectacle of PlayStation 1 cut-screen establishing shots, Jeremy Irons devouring the scenery and spitting it venomously back out, and evil henchmen in frosty blue lipstick. The fantasy extravaganza directed by first-time helmer Courtney Solomon, featuring Justin Whalin, Marlon Wayans, Thora Birch, Zoe McLellan and Kristen Wilson is a much-maligned box office disaster, but is it a powerful gem just waiting to be rediscovered? Get ready to rack 'em or role 'em all you Shaggy Goose Egg Bois, cuz this week it's all about adventure. And that adventure was within ourselves all along. Or it would have been if Courtney Solomon hadn't been on all the pills. In the words of one rouge-ish individual, "WE WERE THIS CLOSE TO GREATNESS". However, instead of achieving greatness, we were given the world's most fantastic political thriller that buffers every thirty minutes. To make up for being not-quite-great, the film stars all your favorites, Young-Old Harrison Ford, Glasses Girl Who No Longer Has Glasses, Prizmo (who makes excellent pickle juice), Dathomir, and of course, Marlon Wayans. With a cast like that, this has to be the greatest movie of all time, right? WRONG. It doesn't even have Vin Diesel (who may or may not be real, depending on who you believe). What it does have is racism, and lots of it. Honestly, everyone in this movie should just shut up and listen to everyone else, much like my family at the dinner table. Anyways, this movie has a lot to say, but it says it about nothing in particular. This includes but is not limited to topics such as moral relativism, destiny, idealism, death, obedience, and of course POLITICS. It always comes back to politics, and there's always a bigger fish. The way to stop that fish is to make sure you have the high ground, but it also helps to be the senate. In other words, time is an illusion that helps things make sense, and we're always living in the present tense. Will happen, happening, happened, cuz you and I will always be back then. In 2000, director Courtney Solomon finally achieved what many thought impossible; he adapted Dungeons and Dragons for the big screen. With decidedly mixed results and poor box office, the film fell by the wayside and became a film lost to the ages.  For this special episode, Aaron enlists the help of not one, but TWO Dungeon Masters to discuss the errors of that original film, and piece together the perfect representation of what a Dungeons and Dragons movie should be. Jeremy Irons, Bruce Payne and Marlon Wayans seriously chew up some poor looking scenery in Courtney Solomon's role playing nightmare DUNGEONS & DRAGONS. This week we talk Dungeons & Dragons (2000), our 2nd Courtney Solomon film to date. We're joined by Paul4AllSeasons, of Twitch and Tumblr fame.   The popular tabletop RPG Dungeons & Dragons had long been beloved when this film was released. But the director rolled a crit-fail in execution, hitting bad acting, poor effects, and even racism on the fumble chart.   Dungeons & Dragons stars Justin Whalin, Jeremy Irons, Thora Birch, and Marlon Wayans. It was written by Topper Lilien and Carroll Cartwright.    We finish the episode with another roll on the 20 Questions chart—and end up with another Game of Thrones discussion. Of course, we'd much rather answer your questions, so send us listener mail at TheCriticalBreakdownPodcast@gmail.com or leave it in a review for us on iTunes!

The Critical Breakdown: A Film Podcast

We've reached a milestone—2%! Thankfully, Getaway lacked Dana Carvey, racism, and turtle impressions. But it was also missing snappy dialogue, thrilling car chases, and characters we cared about. I guess you can't win them all, can you?   Was Getaway a movie about Selena Gomez and Ethan Hawke speeding through Sofia Vergara?   Getaway (2013) was directed by Courtney Solomon, and written by Gregg Maxwell Parker and Sean Finegan. Were you guys as shocked as Scott was over Jon Voight's role? Hit us up on twitter and let us know! Want to have a shout out or get a question answered on a future episode?
