In this episode of The Rewatch Party, Nick, Anthony, and Nick's brother Loren reunite to explore the rewatchability of the 1976 sci-fi classic Logan's Run. Loren, returning for his first appearance since the Gladiator episode—fondly remembered for its unexpected deep dive into hats—brings his trademark wit and unique perspective to the discussion. Together, the trio navigates the dystopian world of Logan's Run, where society's utopia comes at the cost of life beyond 30 years old. Nick opens the conversation by highlighting the film's ambitious vision of the future, its dazzling production design, and its relevance in the context of 1970s sci-fi. He notes the movie's exploration of themes like freedom, control, and the value of human life, sparking a thoughtful discussion. Loren, however, can't resist taking the conversation in unexpected directions, weaving in humor and a callback to his infamous Gladiator hat commentary by questioning the practicality of the film's futuristic wardrobe choices. Anthony balances the conversation with his steady insights, focusing on the performances of Michael York as Logan and Jenny Agutter as Jessica. He praises the movie's ability to tackle weighty themes while still delivering an entertaining and visually captivating experience. Loren, true to form, adds levity by pointing out some of the more dated aspects of the film, including its special effects and occasionally campy tone, sparking laughter and friendly debate among the hosts. As they wrap up, the group assesses Logan's Run's rewatchability. While Nick and Anthony appreciate its place in sci-fi history and its thought-provoking narrative, Loren contends that the movie's charm lies in its mix of ambition and nostalgia, making it an enjoyable, if occasionally quirky, watch. The trio agrees that Logan's Run remains a fascinating time capsule of 1970s filmmaking and a worthy addition to the Rewatch Party roster. Loren's return, filled with humor and sibling banter, makes for a memorable episode that fans won't want to miss.   https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0074812/

As impossible as it might seem, until quite recently, Barry had never seen An American Werewolf in London. This week, the Regular Joe's, joined by Tom Spina of Regal Robot, take a look at the 1981 John Landis horror/dark comedy cult classic. Tom shares his first-hand experience with one of the screen used props, and recounts his own meeting with John Landis. Groundbreaking in many ways, the film earned Rick Baker the first ever Academy award for best makeup. In addition to an unforgettable transformation sequence, American Werewolf also has early 80s era Jenny Agutter, and that's never a bad thing. More than 40 years later, the film remains scary and makes for a good Halloween rewatch. There's also the usual random topics, and a round of What's in the Box. Thanks for listening and happy Halloween.

Welcome to Cyberpunk Cinema – the Definitive Dive into the Dark Future of Science Fiction. I am your host, Anthony La Pira, and I will be taking you on a cinematic journey through the sprawling cityscapes, the crippling datastorms, and the cybernetic implants that encompass all things Cyberpunk. In this week's episode, I will be breaking-down the 1976 protopunk thriller, Logan's Run  – directed by Michael Anderson, starring Michael York, Jenny Agutter, Richard Jordan, Farah Fawcett, Peter Ustinov, and Roscoe Lee Browne.A police officer in the future uncovers the deadly secret behind a society that worships youth.Logan's Run was a landmark science-fiction film of the mid-1970s that posed the question – would you live in a utopian society where you didn't have to work or struggle but the payoff is that you'd have to sacrifice your life by the time you reach 30? That's the dilemma that haunts Logan and Jessica, as they decide to press their luck and see what remains outside the dome. It is a fascinating exploration on how we create the walls that imprison us from reality, the laws that govern us with fear, and the lies we tell each other that blind us from the truth. This is at the very core of Logan's Run.So, do me a favor – it's time to access your cranial jacks, boot up your Ono-Sendai Cyberspace 7, and slap on your damn mirror-shades. Intro music from:Arthemis - Survivor (Destiny's Child Cover)https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xjYCOtYjCY4The Survivor is a 1981 supernatural horror Australian-British co-production directed by David Hemmings and starring Robert Powell, Jenny Agutter, and Joseph Cotten. In Adelaide, Australia (not Eton in the UK as in the original novel written by James Herbert), airline pilot David Keller (played by Powell) survives the crash of his Boeing 747-200, unhurt despite all 300 passengers dying in the accident. With no memories of the accident, he starts to suffer strange supernatural visions.Director David Hemmings is most famous for his acting roles, including Dildano in Barbarella, Marcus Daly in Dario Argento's Deep Red, and Thomas, the fashion photographer in the hugely successful avant-garde mystery film Blowup – a role turned down by Sean Connery because director Michelangelo Antonioni would not show him the full script but only a seven-page treatment stored in a cigarette packet. Hemmings would later feature in The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen with Connery 37 years later.Robert Powell, best known for his portrayal of a charismatic cult leader/son of a carpenter in the 1977 epic television drama series Jesus of Nazareth, also played secret agent Richard Hannay in The Thirty-Nine Steps, appeared in Ken Russell's Tommy as Captain Walker and, at the request of his friend and golf partner, comedian Jasper Carrott, co-starred in the BBC sitcom The Detectives (which ran for five series!). He also lent his voice to the 2002 rock opera The Hound of the Baskervilles by Clive Nolan and Oliver Wakeman, playing John Watson. Powell was considered for several roles in Lifeforce (featured in episode 39 of this podcast). A founder member of the Social Democratic Party in 1981, he campaigned alongside Barry Norman on behalf of the party's first leader, Roy Jenkins.Jenny Agutter (OBE), who plays the role of Hobbs the clairvoyant (a male character in the novel), is best known for her ongoing role in the inexplicably popular Call the Midwife. She also starred in two adaptations of The Railway Children, the critically acclaimed film Walkabout, and, relevant to this podcast, An American Werewolf in London (listen to episode 26 for more info). The film also features Joseph Cotten, (best man at Orson Welles's wedding to Rita Hayworth) appeared in five films selected for the National Film Registry by the Library of Congress for being "culturally, historically or aesthetically" significant. In addition to these classics, he appeared in many films and TV programs, including, pertinent to this podcast, one episode of Tales of the Unexpected. He later admitted, "I was in a lot of junk. I get nervous when I don't work." This was his final motion picture, suffering a stroke shortly after working on it.James Herbert, author of the source novel, sent a note to David Hemmings offering his assistance. He never received a reply, and in 1988 dismissed this film and the later Deadly Eyes (the film adaptation of The Rats) as "They're terrible...absolute rubbish. I can only say - don't blame me." The Survivor was Herbert's third novel, published in 1976, coming after The Rats and The Fog.The music for this film is by Brian May! …but not the one you're thinking of... This is the Australian Brian May, who has an impressive musical CV, including: The Blue Lagoon, Gallipoli, Mad Max, Mad Max 2: The Road Warrior, Missing in Action 2 and Freddy's Dead: The Final Nightmare. This was the first Australian movie to cost more than $1 million (Australian) to make. The location was shifted to OZ as a complex tax dodge, allowing English investors to completely write-off on the whole film. Celluloid Pudding: Movies. Film. Discussions. Laughter. History. Carrying on.

Join us for indulging in some lush 70s SciFi. Good friend and resident SciFi connoisseur Rick Tetrault joins Beth for an in depth discussion about a film that many younger film goers have probably never heard of, and that some veteran film buffs haven't thought about in quite some time. Logan's Run was situated in a unique point in the history of the film industry. It might be easily dismissed because only a year after its release both George Lucas and Steven Spielberg would change the industry and film goer expectations for what the genre “should” look like with films —Star Wars and Close Encounters. Just a year before Logan's Run (and the 1976 remake of King Kong) would earn recognition for special achievement in the discipline of Special Effects—and a new Oscar category was born. Lead Michael York is in the prime of his career coming off a slew of successes that ranged from Romeo and Juliet, Cabaret, and The Musketeers film series. Young and winsome Jenny Agutter plays “Jessica Six” and is the perfect on screen partner for York's “Logan 5” (She later went on to turn in a great performance in another favorite of ours An American Werewolf In London). This film uses a myriad of effects devices, and even though it can appear dated for the time, the long panning shot of “the city” where Logan works as a “Sandman” still evokes feelings of nostalgia and a futuristic aesthetic that leaves film goers yearning for tomorrow. This week on Fabulous Film and Friends we are pointing our compasses southward to the land of doom and gloom:Australia! Don't be fooled by the likes of Paul Hogan, Yahoo Serious and Thor, underneath that loopy, whimsical Australian charm, lies an unparalleled grim and sober yet prophetic outlook about life on Earth as evidenced by 1971's Walkabout directed by Nicholas Roeg, though full disclosure: he's an Englishman who shepherded Jenny Agutter, Luc Roeg, David Gulpilil and John Meillion to cinematic prominence, then 1982's The Road Warrior aka Mad Max 2 directed by George Miller and starring Mel Gibson, Bruce Spence, Kjell Nillson, Max Phipps, Vernon Wells, Mike Preston, Arkie Whitely, Viginia Hey and Emil Minty then topped off with The Road directed by Australian native John Hillcoat and starring Viggo Mortenson, Kodi Smit-McPhee, Charlize Theron, Garrett Dillahunt, the late Michael Kenneth Williams, Guy Pearce  and Robert Duvall.  My guests today are once again the series regulars who have both the stomach and gloomy disposition to take solace in rewatching these films back-to-back-to-back, Roseanne Caputi and Alex Robertson.Okay before we go on a walkabout of our own, the synopses: In Walkabout, a perfectly ordinary pair of upper-class English siblings get lost in the Australian outback after their father takes them for a picnic then tries to murder them. They look to be perfect candidates for either heat stroke and/or vulture food until they are rescued by a young Aboriginal teen out on his Walkabout.  The Road Warrior/Mad Max 2  raises the stakes of the original Mad Max and picks up the story with ex cop Max Rockatansky travelling the barren, hellish, post-apocalyptic highways and stumbling upon an evil road gang led by a brute named Lord Humungus. Humungus is hellbent on invading a compound belonging to a group of  civilized and intelligent settlers who have built an oasis around the last of the oil wells and have running lights and supplies. Losing numbers and their morale under the constant attacks of Humungus, the settlers hatch a plan to escape the vermin on wheels and flee to the coast with their oil in tow. With the help of Max and a pilot called the Gyro Captain, the settlers are given a slim chance to survive.  In The Road a Man risks all to protect his Boy and teach him survival skills in another bleak and nightmarish future where all plant and animal life is gone and the dominant humans subsist through murder and cannibalism.    Which film is king of the outback/queen of the end times?Find out!

Minute One Hundred Twenty Three: From Close-Range Arrow Fighting to A Bird in MotionRobin Burdge from Karate Kid Minute and Sword Boys joins us in this episode! In the one-hundred-twenty-third minute of The Avengers...What happens when Hawkeye runs out of arrows? We get to explore that in this minute in great detail. First off, how does he even get them out of his quiver? It doesn't look like arrowheads could make it out of its top. We try to figure out the system he has for selecting arrowheads. Is it a combination system with the buttons on his bow? Or more like an up-down-select set of buttons? And how many extra arrowheads does he keep in his quiver? Another question that comes up relates to pulling arrows out of victims to reuse the shaft. Is there a button on the trigger than leaves the head behind, which is why there's no arrowhead on the one he struck down this Chitauri with? And does he have some sort of sanitation system to clean the viscera off the shaft before reusing it? So many questions...That takes us to his exciting escape from the Chitauri chariots heading his way to blow up the top of the building. It's his handy grappling hook arrowhead, and that creates all its own questions. How does that little head hold so much weight? What's with the cable? And how does it attach to his bow? Regardless, it does save Clint's life, even if he's in a lot of pain afterward. Of course, Kate Bishop's watching from the across the street, lest we forget.Meanwhile, Hulk's taking out Chitauri on a building top and then is surrounded by nearly two dozen more that blast him. Why doesn't he jump out? We discuss in detail, before heading to the helicarrier where we see a jet called into action from Jenny Agutter's member of the WSC and Maria Hill taking note. An international co-production of the United Kingdom and the United States, the film stars David Naughton, Jenny Agutter, Griffin Dunne and John Woodvine. The title is a cross between An American in Paris and Werewolf of London.[5] The film's plot follows two American backpackers, David and Jack, who are attacked by a werewolf while travelling in England, causing David to question whether he will become a werewolf under the next full moon.[6]Landis wrote the first draft of the screenplay for the film in 1969 and shelved it for over a decade. Prospective financiers believed that Landis' script was too frightening to be a comedy film and too humorous to be a horror film. After achieving success in Hollywood with the comedies The Kentucky Fried Movie, National Lampoon's Animal House and The Blues Brothers, Landis was able to secure financing from PolyGram Pictures to produce An American Werewolf in London. An American Werewolf in London was released in the US by Universal Pictures on August 21, 1981. It was a critical and commercial success, winning the 1981 Saturn Award for Best Horror Film and the first ever Academy Award for Best Makeup. Since its release, it has become a cult classic.[7] A sequel, An American Werewolf in Paris, was released by Hollywood Pictures in 1997.

I enjoy going to movie locations and when I discovered that the scene where Logan and Jessica discover an old man played by Peter Ustinov, the first elderly person either of them has ever seen, was filmed at the Fort Worth Water Gardens, I had to go see it for myself. So, if it hadn't been for you Mike Jones, requesting the short sci-fi story Small World, I would never have known that William F.
