Thrush in a breastfeeding dyad has commonly been diagnosed as a response to pain, but my guest today is a part of an important global conversation asking us to look at the evidence more closely. I'm delighted to be joined by Dr Naomi Dow, GP and IBCLC to talk about her work to better understand what is going on, and reduce the over-diagnosis of nipple and breast thrush. In this episode we discuss the causes of nipple and breast pain, wounds and discolouration, including dermatitis, poor wound management, and physiological conditions. Naomi explains how the symptoms of thrush have often been confused with other things, or even caused by the very things which are supposed to help with nipple pain. We talk about how we can communicate the new messages and what needs to happen next.Dr Naomi Dow is @dr_naomidow_ibclc on instagramMy latest book, ‘Supporting the Transition from Breastfeeding: a Guide to Weaning for Professionals, Supporters and Parents', is out now.You can get 10% off the book at the Jessica Kingsley press website, that's uk.jkp.com using the code MMPE10 at checkout.Follow me on Twitter @MakesMilk and on Instagram @emmapickettibclc or find out more on my website www.emmapickettbreastfeedingsupport.comResources mentioned - Dr Katrina Mitchell's resource:Physician Guide to Breastfeeding for Parents, Physicians, Lactation Consultants, DoulasIABLE website https://lacted.org/The Role of Host and Fungal Factors in the Commensal-to-Pathogen Transition of Candida albicans - a paper discussing the mechanisms by which Candida changes from commensal to pathogenMammary candidiasis: A medical condition without scientific evidence? - the Jiminez et al paper - one of the key pieces of evidence we have that demonstrates that Candida is not the cause of nipple/breast painNCBI - WWW Error Blocked Diagnostic - study looking at alternative explanations for breast/nipple painMiLC https://www.facebook.com/groups/480916214609440/This podcast is presented by Emma Pickett IBCLC, and produced by Emily Crosby Media.

This week I am happy to feature Katrina Mitchell, someone who seldom takes hold of the mic, or is seen center stage. Rather, she is usually working behind the scenes, securing center stage keynote opportunities for her ever- growing roster of speakers and/or planning conferences for an expansive roster of franchise brands. Franchise Speakers Bureau is the ONLY speakers bureau dedicated exclusively to the verticals of franchising, licensing and distribution. Katrina Mitchell is the Founder and Chief Matchmaker, at Franchise Speakers. Launched in 2008, when Katrina was still a successful franchisee herself, she saw the need for a franchise industry speakers bureau that would help franchisors find the perfect speakers, trainers, facilitators, emcees and entertainers, to authentically connect with their franchisees. At Franchise Speakers, their mission is to help franchisors create fabulous experiences for their franchisees. While their speakers do the talking, Katrina's team are active listeners… responding quickly with carefully selected speakers/ trainers/ emcees/ or entertainer options, based on the franchisor's desired objectives. And throughout the process, Katrina and her team, make certain that the presenter options offered for review, will connect seamlessly with the franchisor's culture and the desired feeling, tone, and energy of the event.

Katrina Mitchell founded Franchise Speakers in 2008 with a mission to help franchisors find the right speakers. As a successful franchisee herself, Katrina experienced first-hand both energizing and compelling events and some that left her feeling disengaged and disheartened. Franchise Speakers was launched with the singular focus of helping franchisors find the perfect speakers to re-ignite, re-energize, educate and inspire their franchisees. Being a natural “connector”, Katrina has been happily hunting down perfect matches for Franchise Speakers' many clients ever since. When not busy match-making, Katrina loves to ski, bike, paddleboard & hike with Franchise Speaker's CFO (Chief Fun Officer) Cecil Roy, a sweet and fun-loving Australian Shepherd. Other passions include dancing, knitting, playing the harmonium, reading, and exercising on Zoom with her 85-year-old Mom. Here are some key insights from this week's show: Construct relationships in business around the core values of kindness. Be passionate about mindset, resiliency, and happiness. It is all about personal growth and personal accountability. A big win comes from the amount and quality of time that we get to spend with the people we love. Bringing franchisees together is the franchisors opportunity to help franchisees fall back in love with the brand. Don't skimp! It's your most important marketing and relationships investment of the year! Prefer the video version? Watch it here: https://youtu.be/lW9AgvYasjw
