I've got something extra special for you—Serene and Pearl, the powerhouse sister duo behind the Trim Healthy Mama movement, are joining me to get real about navigating hormones, aging, and conquering that stubborn menopausal midsection. We're diving into their brand new book, "Trim Healthy Wisdom," and trust me, this isn't just another diet guide—it's a full-on roadmap (with humor and heart!) for thriving in perimenopause, menopause, and beyond. They open up about their personal battles with weight gain, fatigue, and libido woes, sharing how tweaking their approach to bioidentical hormones and fueling (not starving) their bodies completely transformed their lives. We unpack the truth about protein, muscle loss, and why your "bat wings" might actually be a sign you need more, not less, on your plate. Plus, we break down the magic of incretin hormones (hello, GLP-1, PYY, and CCK) for natural appetite and weight control—no prescription needed! The Trim Healthy approach to eating and moving gets a super-smart update, including clever hacks like using psyllium husk and baobab for appetite management, and the real story behind hormone replacement and GLP-1 meds (hint: it's not just about quick fixes). Whether you're stuck with your weight, confused about what fuels actually work, or just want to reclaim your badass vitality, this episode promises practical strategies and fresh wisdom to empower your journey. I brushed this off like every other “Nature's GLP1” claim flooding my inbox. But once I sat down, looked at the clinical data and tried it myself, I changed my mind. In this episode, I talk with Sarah Kennedy, the CEO powerhouse behind Calocurb, a science-backed bitter hops extract shown to stimulate GLP-1, CCK, and PYY naturally. We break down the clinical trials, how it works through the gut-brain axis, and why it might be one of the most overlooked tools for appetite control, metabolic resilience, and post-GLP-1 recovery. This isn't another trendy “natural” supplement. It's clinically studied, gut-activated, and worth your attention. As we eat, our gastrointestinal (GI) system releases a host of both local and distant regulators to control the process of digestion. We will begin with the primary hormones, then cover some of the secondary hormones, and lastly discuss how our body senses its intraluminal contents and then subsequently integrates all of the various stimuli it receives. After listening to this AudioBrick, you should be able to: Identify the location, cell type, release stimulus to the endocrine cells, and function of the major gastrointestinal (GI) hormones secretin, cholecystokinin (CCK), gastrin, vasoactive intestinal polypeptide (VIP). Describe in brief the release stimulus and function of the GI regulatory peptides bombesin, GLP-1, GLP-2, ghrelin, leptin, motilin, somatostatin, and gastric inhibitory polypeptide (GIP). Understand how the physical and chemical compositions of luminal contents are sensed and the hormonal responses that then occur. Outline how GI cells integrate multiple regulatory inputs from hormonal and neural inputs to control function. You can also check out the original brick on Gastrointestinal Regulatory Substances from our Gastrointestinal collection, which is available for free. In an era of popular weight loss drugs, including GLP-1 agonists like Ozempic (semaglutide), Victoza (liraglutide), Wegovy, and Saxenda, many people are looking for safer, natural alternatives. Calocurb (use code BEN10 to save 10%) is a patented natural plant-based supplement clinically proven to reduce hunger by 30%, cravings by 40%, and calorie intake by an average of 18% — in just an hour. It does this by stimulating the body's own "feel full" hunger hormones cholecystokinin (CCK), glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1), and peptide YY (PYY). In this episode, Dr. Edward Walker, a scientist and lecturer who helped develop Calocurb, will introduce you to the concept of the "bitter break" and the powerful plant extract, Amarasate, which has shown remarkable results in stimulating anti-appetite hormones when delivered to the small intestine. You'll also get to explore the science behind how this extract works, its impact on glucose and insulin levels, and much more! Over the last 13 years, Dr. Walker's primary research focus has been the investigation of plant-based appetite suppressants that may reduce hunger and support healthy food choices. This work led to the development of Amarasate, a novel New Zealand hops-based appetite suppressant that shares an overlapping mode of action with a new class of effective GLP-1-based anti-obesity drugs. He is passionate about plant-based nutraceuticals and believes that with the appropriate scientific research, they have the potential to improve health and wellness, and even prevent or delay the development of chronic disease. Whether you're interested in nutrition, weight management, or cutting-edge health science, this episode is packed with insights you won't want to miss. Tune in and discover how you can take control of your cravings and support your journey to better health! In the In Conversation With series, a part of the free DDW podcast, DDW speaks with members of the drug discovery industry about their work and how it helps turn science into business. In this episode, Megan Thomas is in conversation with Tien Lee, CEO of Aardvark Therapeutics, a San Diego-based biotech company in Phase II studies of its drug, ARD-101, a type 2 bitter taste receptor (TAS2R) which is taken orally and remains in the human gut unlike GLP-1 which is systemic. The drug targets receptors in the gut where it triggers cholecystokinin (CCK), a GI system peptide hormone responsible for stimulating the digestion of fat and protein. CCK stimulates pancreatic secretion and gallbladder contraction, regulation of gastric emptying, and sends a signal to the brain that one has had enough to eat. You can listen below, or find The Drug Discovery World Podcast on Spotify, Google Play and Apple Podcasts.
Tune in to this informative episode of CCK Live to learn about a case involving Special Monthly Compensation (SMC) for Traumatic Brain Injuries at the U.S. Court of Appeals for Veterans Claims (CAVC). SMC allows veterans to be compensated beyond the 100 percent VA disability rate, and one level of SMC exists exclusively for TBIs. In this case, CCK argued that VA regulations conflict with the statute enacting SMC (t) benefits and that VA has added extra legal requirements, making it more difficult for veterans to qualify for this needed benefit. Be sure to listen in to learn more about SMC (t) and TBI benefits.

VA deems a disability “permanent” when it is reasonably certain, based on medical evidence, that the level of impairment will continue for the rest of the veteran's life. Phenotypes described - Three types can occur in same individual Sensory sensitivity presentation – textures Trauma – vomiting, choking, pain in belly Lack of Interest – “I forget to eat”, don't get hungry and get full quickly (ARFID Plus) What works? - Exposure therapy, Cooking therapy, sometimes speech therapy, eating at regular times, the body will come to expect that.
