As Mississippi State breaks for spring, there's no break for Bulldog teams. The basketball Dogs whip South Carolina to earn a quarterfinals matchup with Tennessee in the SEC Tournament. Barring an unlikely run to the tourney title there is no NCAA option, though the NIT is still out there. Either way Ben Howland's seven-season tenure will end with this campaign. Bulldog baseball brings a most unfamiliar .500 record into the final pre-conference season weekend and needs to not just win three games from winless Princeton but do so in momentum-building style. The rotation is short a starter with Landon Sims out and likely done. So State not only has to rebuild the rotation but work on bullpen roles which haven't borne results often enough. What fans should watch closely today is the lineup and more to point batting order as Bulldog offense is near-last in most SEC categories.
Who are the top managers in the central? My view might go against the grain but I think there is a clear top two, a middle, and an even clearer bottom two. Find out where Terry Francano and the rest measure up by my view. We talk about the college pitcher class and how there has been another hit to an already weak group with Landon Sims leaving his start due to injury. We talk about the current strikeout king Brycen Mautz, who also had the weirdest box score I have ever seen which came from Mautz. I also explain why it is that he could be a Guardians target come June. Derek Orndorff is the current home run king of college baseball. The Pennsylvania product has had a long trip to get to Liberty but he is playing centerfield and crushing the baseball. The former cold weather performer is getting a chance to shine and should be a priority senior sign-on draft day. Every Wednesday is going to be our Wednesday Wrap Up. When I wrote for Scout/247 I had a weekly article called Full Count Trends. I am taking that to the podcast to focus on the top college performers every week on Wednesday. We start with a chat about the Oklahoma State against Vanderbilt matchup that I previewed last week and ended up being correct about. We talk about a recent tweet I had that hit a nerve with two fan bases. Then we focus on Tommy White and why the NC State true freshman is going to be a name that you have to know if you plan to follow college baseball at all. Now we turn two a pair of pitchers who excelled in Bryce Hubbart and Landon Sims who might both go in the first round of a class that is lacking college arms. Then we focus on why this weekend despite being early and a small sample size was disastrous for potential number one overall pick Chase DeLauter. It's a busy week! Ben and Carlos chat about the international free agent signing period over the weekend and what Jan. 15 itself is like from Ben's perspective (spoiler, it's a ton of texting). Ben talks about players switching teams before the signing period and why and how that happens. After that, the two discuss the class and then pivot to Carlos's recently released top 100 draft list for the 2022 class. They discuss the interesting conversation between Druw Jones, Termarr Johnson and Elijah Green at the top of the class, and also get into where the class looks strong and weak overall with some discussion of big risers like James Madison outfielder Chase DeLauter. After that, in anticipation for our top 100 release, the top pitching prospects in baseball are discussed: including Grayson Rodriguez, Shane Baz and George Kirby. The two then make their best guesses as to which players could compete for the title of best pitching prospect in baseball a year from now. Candidates include Jack Leiter and Eury Perez among others. After discussing a group of prep bats who will land among the top 50 and have done nothing but impress in their brief pro careers, the two take listener questions including, ‘Which college catchers have the best tools?' and ‘Who is the best under-20 prospect in the Giants' system?'Time StampsIntro/Banter (0:00:01)What international signing day is like from Ben's perspective (0:01:14)2022 draft class talk (0:18:19)Druw Jones vs. Termarr Johnson vs. Elijah Green (0:26:09)Grayson Rodriguez vs. Shane Baz vs. George Kirby (0:49:52)Candidates for top pitching prospect in 2023 (0:56:11)The curious case of Austin Martin (1:12:41)A cluster of top-50 prep bats off to great starts we really like (1:21:20)Mailbag! Following Texas' 2-1 loss to Mississippi State Sunday night in the Longhorns' first game of the College World Series, we get the thoughts of former Texas State baseball coach and Texas-ex Ty Harrington. Harrington went to Omaha three times as a player at Texas and understands the expectations on the Longhorns, who are making their record 37th appearance in the College World Series. Harrington talks about the stellar pitching performances of Mississippi State's Will Bednar (15 strikeouts) and Landon Sims (six strikeouts) as well as the strong performances by Texas pitchers Ty Madden (10 strikeouts) and redshirt freshman lefty Pete Hansen (two strikeouts) - as well as those twilight, infield shadows at T.D. Ameritrade Park in Omaha that make it hard on hitters. Harrington talks about the struggles at the plate experienced by Texas' five-through-eight hitters - Cam Williams, Douglas Hodo III, Trey Faltine and Silas Ardoin - who each struck out three times against Mississippi State. Harrington also talks about how important it will be for those hitters to come to bounce back on Tuesday at 1 pm CT when the Longhorns take on No. 3 overall seed Tennessee in a win-or-go-home matchup. The Volunteers (50-17) lost 6-0 to unseeded Virginia in their CWS opener on Sunday. Harrington talks about what he likes about having Tristan Stevens (11-3, 2.97 ERA) as the starting pitcher for Texas against Tennessee, a power-hitting team ranked No. 4 nationally in home runs hit this season with 98. Harrington talks about the mindset the Longhorns will need to rally against Tennessee and what he'd say to his players to help them bounce back from a loss like the one UT suffered against Mississippi State. Harrington also talks about the keys to success for the Longhorns - on the mound and at the plate - when Texas takes on the Volunteers on Tuesday. Learn more about your ad choices.
