Email a voicemail message to celticpodcast@gmail.com Lou Gagliardi emailed: "Hi Marc, You ask people to email you to tell you what they're doing when they listen to the show. Sadly, I have no pictures to show but some good news to share I've been researching my family history and can proudly say that I've been finding lots of Irish, Scottish and even Welsh ancestry. I have no problem sharing the names -  - Moon, Dunseath, Lowrie, Thomson, Dunn, etc. So your show helps me connect, in a way, to family long lost physically but coming to me in a spiritual and emotional way. Thanks and keep up the great work! " John Thompson wrote about episode #581: "Hey Marc, Just listened to the Irish & Celtic Music podcast episode 581 and I had a question. One of the last tracks was by Bren Holmes  -  -  a song called SOS. This is a cover song originally written and performed by the Swedish pop group ABBA around 1975 (yeah, I'm that old). I thought you had a policy about not playing covers as they're not "pod safe". It's a great song and I've heard MANY great covers performed at various festivals by various bands. It would be fantastic if you could play more but don't want you to get into any kind of trouble. I'm not quite sure how that works. If you could explain it briefly for your listeners maybe it would clear up the confusion." George Mears emailed: "Marc, I've been a listener since the early days and a patron for several years. The podcast has been my companion for road trips, yard work, construction projects, and career changes; also raising two sons and all the changes 17 years brings. I've written a few times, including in 2018 when my sister and I had our own Celtic Invasion of Scotland after the death of our parents, which you shared with my fellow listeners, thank you. I took a deep stroll through the podcast archive recently, going back to selected episodes through the years. While the music has always been wonderful, it was insightful to hear the difference in your voice, energy, and personal topics from those days. Your podcast has been a shared experience for we, the listeners. Thank you for the virtual weekly meet - up that has brought so much joy. I'll be among your patrons for the next 17 years. Slainte!"

Mariner Books is proud to publish THE LAST FOLK HERO: The Life and Myth of Bo Jackson by acclaimed sportswriter Jeff Pearlman. Hailed as a "master storyteller" (NPR.org), Pearlman is the New York Times bestselling author of nine previous books on iconic subjects, including the '80s Los Angeles Lakers (Showtime, the basis for the hit 2022 HBO series Winning Time, directed by Adam McKay), the 1986 New York Mets (The Bad Guys Won), the '90s Dallas Cowboys (Boys Will Be Boys), and NFL legend Walter Payton (Sweetness). Now, Pearlman turns his remarkable talents to a figure he considers to be in a class of his own, indeed the greatest athlete of all time, who forever redefined the modern sports superstar. The first person to simultaneously star in two major professional sports-and the only one to be named an All-Star in both baseball and football-Bo Jackson was a Heisman Trophy winner and a pop culture phenomenon. His strength, power, and speed were the stuff of legend, among fans and fellow athletes alike. From the mid-'80s until the early '90s, when injuries forced him into early retirement, he seemed to be everywhere, splashed across our television screens and magazine covers in those pre-internet days, as both a stellar athlete and the ubiquitous "Bo Knows" Nike spokesman. And yet what makes Jackson truly unique and immortal, Pearlman says, is the mythology that surrounds him. Pearlman calls him "the last folk hero" because Jackson is the last legendary athlete to do the multitude of impossible-to-conceive feats attributed to him before the age of YouTube and Twitter, when everything that happens in the world can be found online seconds later. In decades past, Pearlman reminds us, some of the most fabled deeds in the history of sports had an element of mystery to them. Did Babe Ruth really point into the distance before homering at Wrigley Field in Game 3 of the 1932 World Series? Did Earl Manigault really grab a quarter off the top of a backboard before dunking a basketball? "We don't know," Pearlman writes. "But the beauty is in the mystery. It's in the debate; in the descriptive adjectives; in having a cousin whose uncle's brother's sister's nephew's wife's maid of honor (from her second wedding, not her third) was at the game, and swears to God it happened."

First off, buy the book because you're gonna love it. Listening/watching this show ought to convince you, anyway. https://www.amazon.com/Last-Folk-Hero-Life-Jackson/ Riz and Jeff dove into the making of the book and some of the interesting pieces behind it. Off the bat, Riz became the first of myriad hosts to have listened to the audiobook and was able to provide the author valuable feedback. There was also talk about Jeff's Mahopac, NY roots (if you know anything of Mahopac, this is the episode for you), and some unforeseen connections with people to whom Jeff interviewed in writing it. In the 80s and 90s, few sports stars loomed as large as Bo Jackson. A Kansas City Royal and an Oakland Raider, he was the rare athlete to play two professional sports. His strength and power seemed supernatural. He soared into end zones, ran the 40-yard dash in 4.13 seconds, hit meteoric home runs, and broke baseball bats over his head for fun. And those were just his documented exploits. Because Bo played in an era before smartphones, stories circulated — that could never be entirely proven or disproven — that he was capable of even more impressive feats. The guy was the stuff of legends. For this reason, Jeff Pearlman has entitled his new biography of Bo: The Last Folk Hero. Today on the show, Jeff and I talk about Bo's Paul Bunyan-esque stature, and the real life behind the legend. We discuss both the flaws and the strengths of Bo Jackson, and how natural talent can be both a hindrance and a help, as we trace his life from an impoverished upbringing as one of ten kids, to how he managed to secure an arrangement where he got to play two professional sports. Jeff explains how Bo never liked to practice — because he was so naturally gifted he didn't need to — why Bo didn't take the deal when the Yankees tried to draft him out of high school, the flash-bulb moments he achieved in college and the pros, how a hip injury ended his football days but didn't entirely finish him off for baseball, and why, after such a neon career, Bo has largely disappeared from the public eye.Bo Highlights Mentioned in the ShowBo going over the top in the 1982 Auburn/Alabama Iron BowlBo running across the outfield wall in BaltimoreBo's first major league at bat against Steve CarltonBo's rookie 91-yard run vs. the SeahawksBo's leadoff homer in the 1989 All-Stars GameBo throwing out Harold Reynolds at home plateBo breaking bats over his knee and headConnect With Jeff PearlmanJeff's WebsiteJeff on Twitter

Jeff Pearlman, New York Times best-selling author of nine books including "The Bad Guys Won", "Boys Will Be Boys", and "Showtime" (adapted for the HBO Series 'Winning Time'), joins the podcast to talk about his new book "The Last Folk Hero: The Life and Myth of Bo Jackson." Jeff shares his process that took almost three years, 700 original interviews and scores of research to craft this seminal biography about the elusive Bo Jackson. Bo was the first two-sport superstar in the modern era, shining on the diamond for the Kansas City Royals and on the gridiron with the Los Angeles Raiders in the 1980s. Jackson was a Heisman Trophy winner at Auburn, the only professional athlete to play in an MLB All-Star Game and the NFL Pro Bowl, and a pop culture phenomenon with his incredible athletic exploits in both. Jeff deep dives into the mythology of what makes Bo Jackson immortal in a time before social media and 24/7 sports coverage.
