I've been wanting to do a Freestyle mixtape for a while now. I have cool memories of this music booming out of little Suzuki Samurais and Honda Civics in the late '80s during family vacations to the East and West Coasts. Lately, I've been listening to a lot of archived radio DJ mixes from the late '80s and was inspired to pull together some tasty Rap, Freestyle, Electro, Post-Disco, and House for this tape. I only recently became aware of the original version of 'Show Me Love' and found an unopened copy on Discogs, so the version at the end of this set is a genuine needle drop. A brief introduction to the Freestyle genre: Emerging in the early 1980s in the United States and originating in the urban Latino communities of New York City and Miami, Freestyle was characterized by a blend of synthesizer and drum-heavy electronic beats, Latin percussion, and emotive, often dramatic singing. Notable artists include Lisa Lisa and Cult Jam, Stevie B, and Exposé. Internationally, the impact of Freestyle was more nuanced. In Europe, while synth-pop, new wave, and house music were more dominant, elements of Freestyle influenced the emerging Eurodance scene. Meanwhile, in Japan, Freestyle was overshadowed by genres like J-Pop and city pop, along with various other forms of Western music. While its core fanbase resided in cities like New York and Miami, Freestyle's popularity was embraced in club scenes nationwide and received considerable radio play, particularly on urban contemporary, dance, and R&B stations during its peak in the late 1980s. This era marked the height of Freestyle's run in the charts with songs like 'Fascinated' by Company B, 'Crush on You' by The Jets, 'Point of No Return' by Exposé, 'Naughty Girls (Need Love Too)' by Samantha Fox, and 'Tell It to My Heart' by Taylor Dayne. Freestyle's influence persisted into the early '90s, notably in Eurodance with international hit songs like 'Rhythm of the Night' by Corona and 'Be My Lover' by La Bouche, which exhibited similarly catchy choruses and uptempo rhythms, but with much denser and slicker production. While in the Latin music scene, especially in the early to mid-1990s, Latin Freestyle, a subgenre, saw artists like Selena infusing traditional Latin sounds with Freestyle's electronic beats and rhythms. Freestyle remains a distinctive and memorable part of 1980s music culture, representing a unique fusion of sounds that captured the energy and diversity of its era. Fantasy 3 - It's Your Rock Pretty Tony - Fix It in the Mix Freestyle - Don't Stop the Rock Trinere - How Can We Be Wrong Sequal - It's Not Too Late Jennette - You Turn Me On Olga - Play Another Song for Me Pretty Poison - Nightime Newtrament - London Bridge is Falling Down (Dub Mix) Beat Street - Breaker's Revenge Bohannon - Let's Start the Dance III (Instrumental Club) Patrice Rushen - Number One (Instrumental Version) N.O.I.A. - The Rule to Survive Import #1 - Set It Off (Party Rock) Connie - Rock Me Lidell Townsell, M T F - Nu Nu (Radio Apella) Robin Stone - Show Me Love (New York Mix) If you're listening on Apple Podcasts, please shoot me a quick 5-star rating, and a positive review if you're feeling generous. On Episode 227, we are joined by the acclaimed music writer Bob Stanley, the man behind one of Niall's favourite books Yeah Yeah Yeah: The Story of Modern Pop and a member of indie-pop group St. Etienne. To celebrate 10 years of Faber Books are reissuing Yeah Yeah Yeah (with a new chapter taking it up to present day) , along with its prequel Let's Do It: The Birth of Pop (the definitive story of the birth of Pop, from 1900 to the mid-fifties), both on paperback.Along with the books, Bob Stanley also put together a compilation for Ace Records called Latin Freestyle - New York/Miami 1983 - 1992, in his words a crashing electro-funk sub genre of dance music. It was the aural equivalent of a can of thirst-quenching Quatro or a Spanish Harlem dance-off, and it became the electronically constructed bridge between disco and house.Latin Freestyle grew out of electro, and was a more female-fronted classic pop version with frequently Latina vocals, bleepy synth riffs, proto-house piano lines, drum machine hits and lyrics that harked back to '60s girl groups teenage concerns of heartbreak, boys and dancing. We talk to Bob about the books and this subgenre of electro music that developed in New York and Miami in the early 80s and included Madonna, Debbie Deb, Shannon, Alisha, Company B, Lisa Lisa, Exposé, Taylor Dane and went on to influence music from the Bee Gees' Robin Gibb, Pet Shop Boys, Freeez and more.A playlist of Latin Freestyle accompanies this episode on Patron. Back in the early ‘80s, Brooklynite Alisha Ann Itkin was pretty much your average American teenager. Outgoing yet a bit timid onstage, she shined as a cheerleader, and scored roles in school plays and functions. Oh, and she was also an outstanding vocalist who began training at the age of 8 with the support of her parents, Lillian and Al.As fate would have it, a demo of hers recorded with a rock band called The Babysitters landed in the lap of then Vanguard Records engineer and producer, Mark Berry, already established with his work on landmark records such as Carly Simon's “You're So Vain,” and Man Parrish's “Hip Hop (Be Bop)”.Berry chose Alisha to lay vocals on a track written by Rick Tarbox, featuring lyrics that seemed somewhat racy for a girl her age. Alisha's performance, however, embodied feelings of desire to full effect, coupled by an extravagant reverb-filled production that signaled a new era in Dance music.Recorded in the summer of 1983, and released in early 1984, “All Night Passion” was played in virtually every club in New York City, crossing the Atlantic with ease. Four decades later, it still withstands the test of time as one of the era's best freestyle jams.Show TracklistingCabaret (Alisha - Extract from "Alisha - The Rise of an '80s Icon" documentary)If You Read My Mind Demo (Alisha - Extract from "Alisha - The Rise of an '80s Icon" documentary)You're So Vain (Carly Simon)Hip Hop (Be Bop) (Man Parrish)All Night Passion - Album Version (Alisha)All Night Passion - Extended Remix (Alisha)(You Wanna Be A) Superstar (Alisha)Host and Producer: Diego MartinezExecutive Producer: Nicholas "NickFresh" PuzoAudio Engineer: Adam Fogel Follow us on social media: @choonspod

Walk the warm streets of Miami Beach with Lewis Martinee and Laurie Miller, as they discuss the making and legacy of "Point Of No Return," originally released by Exposé as a 12" single in 1985, and rereleased for the pop audience two years later.Though Martinee started work as a rock musician, his claim to fame was developing the Latin Freestyle sound that would dominate the mid-to-late 80s in various parts of the United States. Laurie Miller, Sandra "Sandee" Casañas, and Alejandra "Ale" Lorenzo brought his concept to life with flashy outfits, fierce choreo, and strong tracks like "Point Of No Return" that skyrocketed to the top of the Dance charts. FEATURED DJ: DJ RACER Carlos Rodriguez AKA (DJ RaceR) owner and founder of DJ RaceR Entertainment grew up in Spanish Harlem New York. Through his passion for music, he began to DJ house parties in 1983 which led him to his passion and love for DJing and how DJ RaceR started his journey. At a young age DJ RaceR was mostly into Hip Hop, House, and Latin Freestyle. As he grew as a DJ, his taste in genres evolved, adding and expanding his interest in various genres such as Disco, Funk, Electronic, 90’s R&B, Cumbia, Merengue & Reggaeton. In 1988 DJ Racer moved from his home in Spanish Harlem to Sunny Southern California, which he has now called home for over 25 years. At that point he had chosen not to DJ until 2015 when he decided to give it another try just for fun. Soon after it led him to start DJing on his own on Facebook which led to weekly shows which took off as he gained many followers and listeners. Shortly after, he joined an online Radio station (The Freestyle Radio) with weekly shows and evolved into interviewing some of the hottest artists in the industry. With this and while reaching back to his roots and integrating his modern-day eclectic taste, in 2016 he founded DJ Racer Entertainment and Music Lovers Radio to bring the best DJ experience possible. To experience and to sample what DJ RaceR has to offer you can find him on many online platforms.

In the mid to late 80’s an alternative rhythmic style was introduced to the dance floors and airwaves; it was the birth and ride of Latin Freestyle. The beats were for the most part a direct derivative of the early 80’s electro beat style popular in New York and beyond pioneered by Afrika Bambata and the Soul Sonic Force and other local talents. The Hispanic community namely of New York and Miami put a new spin on the beats by incorporating melodic vocals and added musical layers. Born and raised on the Southwest side of Detroit he was exposed to electronic music at a young age. Listening to The Wizzard as he fell asleep at night not knowing who, what, when, where and why this music was so motivational. The music being played in this area at that time was a mix of Latin Freestyle and Bass(Detroit Techno). As a product of his environment he began Djing Latin Freestyle and Bass starting at the age of 16, right around the time (93 or 94) where he was exposed to his first rave. At that point he decided to cash in his Latin Freestyle records for House and Techno. Early in his career of Djing he held residencies at local after hours around Detroit. Such as 420, Club 911, Rehab and Body's just to name a few. Also A.O.D. held weekly residencies at local clubs around Detroit such as OSLO and The Works. Around 2000 he began A.O.D.( Arsenal of Democracy) after reading a Detroit history book. At that time he wanted start doing events. His first party was NYE 2001 at an empty loft on Grand River and Woodward. A.O.D. from that point forward became to be know for one off parties around the city of Detroit show casein talent from the likes of Ryan Elliott, The Surgeon, The Advent, Tony Rohr, Scan 7, Adam Marshall, Barem, Camea, Lee Foss, and most recently The Wolf + Lamb Crew, NRP SoulClap just to name a few. Around 2005 Vinnie along with A.O.D. Moved to Chicago and started to do networking there to set up shows for friends and artists alike. Moving back to Detroit in 2008 You can find Vinnie playing a wide variety of music, from Classic Detroit Techno and House to Hard Techno to Minimal but lately he has developed a feel for Tech House mixed with Deep(discofunkyslowbanginwhateva) House. Moving into 2010 Vinnie along with A.O.D. has taken over the reigns at The Works in Detroit where he is the booking manager. Vinnie as of late has multiple residencies in and around Mi. You can catch Vinnie every Monday at The Flight Club most Fridays at The Works or catch his monthly in Grand Rapids and a monthly at The TV Bar also watch out as he dips in and out of Chicago frequently and playing random events in Detroit. Currently dipping his feet into the Miami Beach night life. Already having a residency at The Pelican Cafe on Ocean Drive. Bringing a lot of experience with him to an already saturated market "we will see what I can get myself into here"... Be on the look out for any events involving A.O.D.
