Another day, another story of breathless speculation about the President's age. Speaking (views very much my own) as a member of the generation that coined the phrase "ok boomer," I, for one, would like a little more focus on what Biden has actually done as President, and a little less on the fact that he was born during WWII.
The 20-foot high cliff was window into the Superior Craton, one of the very first land masses to form when the planet was young. The original rocks likely included basalt from the ocean floor and volcanoes; granite from some of the first-ever continental crust; and mudstones formed as early Earth weather eroded rocks into smaller pieces and re-deposited them. Then, they were all buried deeply by more rocks being piled on top and the actions of plate tectonics, heated to 600-700 degrees Celsius, and metamorphosed. “This rock has experienced a LOT of Earth's history,” said Tom, in a bit of an understatement.

There is scant evidence for very old people in the archaeological record, but the Bible claims people once lived for centuries. Is this a major contradiction? Not really. First, regarding the physical evidence, we would not necessarily know what to look for. Second, just because a person can get old does not mean they will. Potential lifespan is not the same as realized lifespan. Third, and this is the focus of this episode, population modeling shows that short-lived people that are the maximum number of generations removed from Noah will quickly dominate. This is a recipe for rapidly collapsing lifespans. Long-lived people would have been quite rare in the early post-Flood world. The biblical data. See my article The rapid decline in biblical lifespans: The actuarial table I used. Data from https://www.who.int/healthinfo/paper09.pdf, WHO LIFE TABLE FOR 1999: AFR D A population pyramid at year 1000 using the default model: The number of generations people are 'removed' from Noah at 100-year intervals in the default model: Realized vs expected lifespans at 100-year intervals in the default model:
From John Dickson: While we're working hard on our next Season of Undeceptions, I've asked the Rev Dr George Athas to have a chat to you about how we can be sure our old stuff - artefacts we've found from thousands of years ago - is actually old. George is Director of Research, Old Testament and Hebrew at Moore Theological College in Sydney. We spoke to him at length for our super popular episode called ‘Between Testaments', so go check that out if you haven't heard it already. It's one of my favourites. George has done a huge amount of research on the Tel Dan Inscription, a fragmentary stele that dates to the 9th Century BC. It's considered the most important - and controversial - inscription found in Israel in recent years. And George wrote the first book about it. So, over to him.
