Stāsta mākslas vēsturniece, Latvijas Nacionālā mākslas muzeja izstāžu kuratore Baiba Vanaga; pārraides producente – Inta Zēgnere 1911. gada 15. decembrī jaunā gleznotāja Milda Grīnfelde (1881–1966) rakstīja vīram no Parīzes: "Šodien iemaksāju pie Neatkarīgajiem (Société des Artistes Indépendents), tātad izstādīšana tur man nodrošināta. Izstāde būs tikai vēl martā. Pērn varēja 6 bildes sūtīt, šogad tik 3. Slikti tas ir, jo nevar lāga savu personību parādīt. Milzīga izstāde, kādi 15 000 eksponātu. Galva reibst, kad cauri iet." Mildas rakstītais attiecas uz tā saukto Neatkarīgo salonu – ikgadēju izstādi Parīzē, kas norisinājās kā alternatīva oficiālajām mākslas izstādēm un kurā nereti pirmo reizi tika parādīti dažādu jauno stilistisko virzienu darbi. Mildas gleznas Neatkarīgo salonā bija iekļautas divreiz – 1912. gadā un gadu pēc tam, un tas viņu padara par pirmo latviešu sievieti, kas piedalījusies izstādēs ārpus Latvijas. Milda dzimusi 1881. gada 16. decembrī (pēc vecā stila) Ēveles pagastā rentnieku Jāņa un Annas Brantu ģimenē. Pēc mācībām kādā no Rīgas meiteņu ģimnāzijām viņa apguva mākslas pamatus jaunatvērtajā gleznotāja Jaņa Rozentāla studijā, paralēli papildinoties arī pie ainavista Vilhelma Purvīša. 1906. gadā jaunā māksliniece apprecējās ar Rīgas Politehniskā institūta absolventu, civilo inženieri Edgaru Grīnfeldu (1879–1940), kurš drīz tika nosūtīts darbā uz Permas apgabala Osas pilsētu Krievijā. Nākamā gada augustā Grīnfeldu ģimenē piedzima dēls Nilss, bet jau dažus mēnešus vēlāk, atstājot bērnu pie saviem vecākiem Latvijā, Milda devās uz Maskavu, kur līdz pavasarim mācījās pie ainavistiem Nikolaja Hoļavina un Staņislava Žukovska. 1908. gada rudenī Milda ceļoja uz Parīzi, kur turpmākās četras ziemas studēja mākslu. Šajā laikā uz Osu, kur māksliniece kopā ar ģimeni pavadīja tikai vasaras, regulāri ceļoja vēstules. Tajās viņa savu vīru iepazīstināja ar Parīzes dzīves praktiskajiem aspektiem, apmeklētajām nodarbībām, satiktajiem cilvēkiem un redzētajām mākslas un kultūras vērtībām. Kā liecina vēstules, Mildas dzīves ritms Parīzē bija ļoti saspringts, jo darbadienās viņa intensīvi mācījās, bet brīvdienās apmeklēja kultūras pieminekļus, muzejus un izstādes. Pirmajos Parīzē pavadītajos gados priekšpusdienās viņa studēja privātajā Vitti akadēmijā (Académie Vitti) pie franču postimpresionisma gleznotāja Anrī Martēna (Henri Martin), pēcpusdienās apmeklēja anatomijas teorētiskās lekcijas un praktiskās jeb kaulu un muskuļu zīmēšanas nodarbības Parīzes Daiļo mākslu skolā (École des Beaux-Arts), bet vakaros devās uz "croquis" jeb skicēšanas nodarbībām kādā no privātajām mākslas skolām. Jaunās mākslinieces pirmā dalība izstādē – Neatkarīgo salonā Parīzē –, notika 1912. gada pavasarī – laikā, kad tur turpinājās kubisma skandāls, kas bija sācies iepriekšējā gadā. Bez Mildas izstādē piedalījās vēl vairāki Latvijā dzimuši mākslinieki – vācbaltiešu gleznotāji Ida Fīlica (Ida Fielitz), Alise Dannenberga (Alice Dannenberg) un Frederiks Fībigs (Frédéric Fiebig), kas visi Parīzē bija apmetušies uz pastāvīgu dzīvi. Savukārt nākamā gada Neatkarīgo salonā reizē ar Mildas un pārējo minēto mākslinieku gleznām bija apskatāmi arī Anša Cīruļa keramikas darbi. 1913. gada nogalē Milda piedalījās arī 3. Latviešu mākslinieku izstādē Rīgā, eksponējot vīrieša portretu "pelēkā tonī", ko kā "droši un ar pārliecību gleznotu" atzīmējuši izstādes apskatnieki. Mildas dēls Nilss Grīnfelds (1907–1986), kurš mātes mākslas studiju dēļ savas dzīves pirmos gadus lielākoties pavadīja pie vecvecākiem, kļuva par muzikologu un strādāja Latvijas Valsts konservatorijā. Viņa mīlestība uz mūziku, domājams, mantota no mātes, kas vēstulēs no Parīzes nereti raksturojusi arī savus muzikālos iespaidus. Tā 1908. gada novembrī nākamā dienā pēc koncerta apmeklējuma, kurā izskanējusi Bēthovena 4. simfonija un "vēl pieci smagi simfoniski gabali", viņa sajūsmināta raksta: "Tas visburvīgākais, kā dēļ ir vērts, ka cilvēks pasaulē ir: simfonijas koncertu Tu klausies, jau sākot no viena franka!" Attiecībā uz saturisko piedāvājumu Milda norādījusi, ka "visu jaunāko te ceļ priekšā", ko vērtējot, viņa vīram raksta: "Kad Tu zinātu to burvīgumu, kāds ir franču jaunākos komponistos, tāpat vācu! Mēs no visa tā nekā nezinām – tāds spēks, krāsu bagātība! Es zinu, Tu būtu arī līdz asarām aizkustināts kā es vakar pie viena gabala biju." Kādā no nākamajām ziemām Milda pat iegādājusies koncertu abonementu, ko izmantojusi kopā ar citiem latviešiem. Šajā laikā franču metropolē bija izveidojies Latviešu pulciņš (Le cercle letton), kas, kā atcerējās Sorbonas universitātē literatūru studējušā Elza Stērste, bija apmeties Senžermēna bulvāra šķērsielā (rue du Bieve) un pulcēja studentus un dažādu profesiju un politisko uzskatu cilvēkus, kas tikušies uz priekšlasījumiem, svētku koncertiem, kora mēģinājumiem un citiem pasākumiem. Tuvākais no Parīzē studējošajiem latviešiem Mildai bija Ansis Cīrulis, ar ko kopā apmeklējuši izstādes, dalījušies ar mākslas iespaidiem un pat gribējuši "pavisam ko jaunu radīt". Savā pirmajā Parīzes ziemā Milda rakstīja vīram: "Es gribu to attēlot, ko Vāgners mūzikā izteicis, tas ir, ne to taisni, ko viņš, bet tik universeli pasauli, būtību (das Sein), cilvēku un mīlestību izteikt. Vai tas man izdosies? Vai būs tik daudz iekšķīga spēka?" Kā redzams pēc mākslinieces studiju laikā un drīz pēc tam tapušajiem darbiem, savu profesionālo ceļu glezniecībā viņa sāka pārliecinoši. Tomēr drīz pēc atgriešanās pie ģimenes, rūpes par to vai kādi citi apstākļi kavēja Mildu nodoties mākslai pilnībā un vēstulē vīram izteiktās bažas piepildījās, Latvijas mākslas vēsturē viņai paliekot gandrīz nezināmai.
