“If you want to help somebody, if you want to inspire somebody, if you want to reach somebody and lift them up to God's way of life...you have to give them the Word. You have to know the Word, and as you write [music], just keep that in mind, that God is your sufficiency. God is the One that's helping you. He will not hide anything good from you when you're writing a song because He wants people to be reached even more than you do.” Enjoy this conversation with Christian musician Bob Stanley and Lauren Boner as Bob expands on his background and inspiration for writing godly music. Also in this episode, Bob gives several special performances, singing some of his classic songs, as well as a new song entitled “Abiding in the Truth of God's Word.” Conversation Links: https://open.spotify.com/artist/0953GI6ywifLqCU7wfQud5 II Timothy 1:7 To Learn More about The Way International: https://linktr.ee/thewayintl https://www.theway.org/contact-us/ Certain opinions expressed in this podcast may or may not represent the views of The Way International. Welcome to The Giddy Carousel of Pop! In this episode, we take a trip to the Carousel's reading room to talk to find out all about Phew, Eh Readers?, a new book collecting selected works of Smash Hits and Q scribe Tom Hibbert, with the book's co-editor Jasper Murison-Bowie and designer (and former Smash Hits staffer) Caroline Grimshaw. We also hear from Hibbert's Smash Hits colleagues Barry McIlhenney, Sylvia Patterson* and Mark Ellen who share their memories of working with him. Here's the book blurb:The influence of Tom Hibbert's music writing across print, radio, TV and podcasts is incomparable. From his genre-defining work at Smash Hits to his 'Who the Hell ... ?' profiles for Q magazine and beyond, this book brings together many of Hibbert's funniest writings.Compiled by Barney Hoskyns and Jasper Murison-Bowie at Rock's Backpages, the archive of music journalism, Phew, Eh Readers? showcases some of Hibbert's greatest pieces. Presented thematically and chronologically, they highlight his marvellously eccentric perspective on life and popular culture. Many leading writers and journalists attest to Hibbert's genius. This compendium supplements his writing with new reflections on Tom from some of his peers, colleagues and admirers, including Mark Ellen, Bob Stanley, Tom Doyle, Chris Heath, Sylvia Patterson, along with his widow Allyce.Phew, Eh Readers? is a must-read homage to one of the most influential writers of our time, a man who left an indelible mark on our cultural landscape.HOSTS: Simon Galloway and Gavin HoggGUESTS: Jasper Murison-Bowie & Caroline Grimshaw*Sylvia Patterson clip from Word In Your Ear episode 225: https://shows.acast.com/word-in-your-ear-2/episodes/5fe229acf896715ee8319696. On Episode 227, we are joined by the acclaimed music writer Bob Stanley, the man behind one of Niall's favourite books Yeah Yeah Yeah: The Story of Modern Pop and a member of indie-pop group St. Etienne. To celebrate 10 years of Faber Books are reissuing Yeah Yeah Yeah (with a new chapter taking it up to present day) , along with its prequel Let's Do It: The Birth of Pop (the definitive story of the birth of Pop, from 1900 to the mid-fifties), both on paperback.Along with the books, Bob Stanley also put together a compilation for Ace Records called Latin Freestyle - New York/Miami 1983 - 1992, in his words a crashing electro-funk sub genre of dance music. It was the aural equivalent of a can of thirst-quenching Quatro or a Spanish Harlem dance-off, and it became the electronically constructed bridge between disco and house.Latin Freestyle grew out of electro, and was a more female-fronted classic pop version with frequently Latina vocals, bleepy synth riffs, proto-house piano lines, drum machine hits and lyrics that harked back to '60s girl groups teenage concerns of heartbreak, boys and dancing. We talk to Bob about the books and this subgenre of electro music that developed in New York and Miami in the early 80s and included Madonna, Debbie Deb, Shannon, Alisha, Company B, Lisa Lisa, Exposé, Taylor Dane and went on to influence music from the Bee Gees' Robin Gibb, Pet Shop Boys, Freeez and more.A playlist of Latin Freestyle accompanies this episode on Patron. THE BEE GEES – MAIN COURSE with special guest Bob Stanley This interview took place before and after we listened to the vinyl album. It may sound silly to call the twelth album by a group with an eight-year string of gold records behind them a "breakthrough," but that's what Main Course was. Released in 1975, the group's first disco album – and, for many white listeners, the first disco album they ever purchased – Main Course marked a huge change in the Bee Gees' sound. The group's earlier LPs, steeped in a dense romantic balladry, were beautifully crafted but too serious for any but hardcore fans.  With special guest BOB STANLEY We were delighted that Bob Stanley was with us to talk about the Bee Gees' album, the terrific Main Course. Bob's latest offering is Children Of The World, a unique biography of the Bee Gees. Bob is a writer, musician, dj and film producer. Since founding influential pop group Saint Etienne, He has enjoyed a parallel career as a journalist and is the author of Yeah Yeah Yeah and 2023 Penderyn Music Book Prize Winner, Let's Do It: The Birth Of Pop. Harry Parry was born in north Wales in 1912. He trained to be a musical instrument maker but the performance side took over and he moved to London to play in big bands, including Percival Mackey's. He established his own six piece band and was asked by the BBC to lead the band for their Radio Rythmn Club show. He was popular throughout the 1940s and into the 50s. He died at the age of 44 in 1956.  His music was fun, with a real swing and he brought interesting vocalists and musicians to perform and record with the Sextet. Jazz legend George Shearing was his pianist for many years. Check out Bob Stanley's book, 'Let's do it.' It's a great read about the history of British and American pop. It has a complimentary section about Harry in it. BBC Radio one D.J John Peel was a fan of Parry.      Bounce me brother with a solid four, vocalist Doreen Villiers. Mr five by five- vocalist Dave Wilkins. Stars fell on Alabama- vocalist Harry Parry. Black eyes(1941). Crazy rhythm(1942). It don't count(1941). Lonesome road(1946). Blues around my bed, vocalist Ruby Marlow. Pontiac jump. Stardust. Parry opus. My blue heaven. We end with the wonderful Softly as in a morning sunrise.

For fans of music books from David Hepworth, Pete Paphides, Bob Stanley and Craig Brown, as well as thought-provoking human interest stories like Moondust by Andrew Smith, and books by Jon Ronson, Louis Theroux and Stuart Maconie. A quirky, thought-provoking look at the curious afterlife of pop stars. Nick Duerden has spent many years interviewing the most famous musicians on the planet. Without exception, they are at their most interesting when they've peaked, and when they are on their way down. In many ways, this is when these former idols are at their most heroic, too, because they reveal themselves not only to be humane and sensitive, but also still driven to create, to fulfil their lingering dreams, to refuse to live quietly. Some sustain themselves on the nostalgia circuit. Others continue to beaver away in the studio, no longer Abbey Road so much as the garden shed. The desire for adulation is a light that never goes out. We live in a culture obsessed by the notion of fame—the heedless pursuit of it, the almost obligatory subsequent fallout. But what's it like to actually achieve it, and what's it like when fame abruptly passes, and shifts, as it does, onto someone else? These are tales of heroin addiction, bankruptcy, depression, divorce—but also of optimism, a genuine love of the craft, humility and hope. All of which makes Exit Stage Left a fascinating, laugh-out-loud funny and often shocking look at what happens when the brightest of stars fall down to earth. Featuring brand-new interviews with the likes of: Bob Geldof, Shaun Ryder, Robbie Williams, Roisin Murphy, Stewart Copeland, Billy Bragg, Wendy James, Alex Kapranos, Joan Armatrading, Leo Sayer, Gary Lightbody, Lisa Maffia, Tim Booth, Bill Drummond, Rufus Wainwright, David Gray and Justin Hawkins.

In this episode we're thrilled to host Simon Reynolds, beamed in from his adopted Southern California. One of the most outstanding music writers of the past three and a half decades, Simon talks to us about his formative pop years; his own early fanzines Margin and Monitor; and the sea-change he (and others) brought to Melody Maker in the late '80s.Simon's fascinating and passionate Pitchfork piece 'Worth the Wait' (2014) is the springboard for a general discussion of the peak years of the MM, the NME and the general phenomenon of the UK's weekly music press. The conversation turns to what's been lost in the digital/internet era, but also what's been gained. One of Simon's fellow Melody Maker scribes was Bob Stanley, which affords us the excuse to rhapsodise about Bob's neo-retro meta-pop trio Saint Etienne. With their latest album I've Been Trying To Tell You due for imminent release, Simon and Barney reminisce happily about the impact of their glorious 1991 debut Foxbase Alpha. The week's new audio interview — Adam Blake's 1988 conversation with Heaven 17 — takes us even further back in pop time, to the Sheffield group's 40-year-old (and still highly impressive) Penthouse & Pavement album... and to a more general discussion of proto-synthpop and the first edition of the Human League. We hear two clips of (mainly) Martyn Ware speaking: one about the challenges of promoting themselves, the other about their scorn for the Top 40 radio fodder of the day (with particular venom reserved for Messrs. Stock, Aitken & Waterman). There's a brief but related digression on the previous week's audio, Steven Daly's 1990 interview with hitmaker-for-hire Diane Warren. From there it's a not-so-seamless segue to the sad losses of maverick Jamaican producer Lee "Scratch" Perry and Rolling Stones drummer Charlie Watts, with attendant discussions of dub & roots reggae — and of the central importance of Mr. Watts to everything that was great about peak-period Stones.Mark talks us out with his thoughts on (and quotes from) new library pieces about Dylan at Forest Hills, Bowie at Winterland, Donna Summer and the Smiths, and Jasper concludes matters with remarks on St. Vincent and the wonderful cover of Marvin Gaye's I Want You.Many thanks to special guest Simon Reynolds; find his blog at blissout.blogspot.com.Pieces discussed: Worth the Wait, Saint Etienne, Heaven 17 audio, Diane Warren audio, Lee "Scratch" Perry (Vivien Goldman), Lee "Scratch" Perry (Simon Reynolds), Charlie Watts, Kim Fowley, David Bowie, The Faces, AC/DC, Donna Summer, Bob Dylan, Laura Nyro, The Smiths, St. Vincent, Marvin Gaye and Tessa Violet.

The podcast that celebrates the variously compiled world of pop is one year old.Over the past twelve months, thirteen wonderful guests have joined me to open up gatefold sleeves, slip out cassette inlays and flick through CD booklets of their chosen compilation albums. And in doing so, we've not only shared some great musical memories, we've also explored the shifting pop cultures of the past four decades and have recognised how these various artists collections do indeed stand as fond time capsules for our journeys through life.So for this episode, here are some memorable moments - a compilation, if you will - from the first year of Back to NOW - including some previously unheard and extended clips. In this anniversary episode, find out which NOW album Bob Stanley thinks was his first, the line up for Band Aid 1974(!), the Rebel MC's 'must have' items on tour and (in all its glory) the full horror Womble Hysteria!Don't forget you can hear the full episodes now at your favourite podcast sites and join in the conversations with myself Iain at the Poprambler Facebook, Twitter and Instagram pages.I would like to say a massive thank you to all of my guests who've taken time to join me this year. It's been privilege and a joy sharing in your musical journeys and as they say, we couldn't have done it without you.And to everyone that has listened and engaged in the podcast - thanks for all of your support and choosing Back to NOW!The series now continues and I look forward to more guests, memories and stories coming very soon. Tessa and Bob are lifelong Mark E Smith devotees and have just published 'Excavate: the Wonderful And Frightening World of The Fall', a collection of essays inspired by the band's unique and eternally beguiling back catalogue and divinely cranky modus operandi - along with artwork, ephemera, lyrics sheets, letters to fans and self-written press releases. It's an atlas that navigates the Fall's outer reaches rather than an investigation of the man himself "as you can't look directly at the sun". This terrific free-wheeling conversation touches on football, architecture, working men's clubs, self-made mythology, the nature of Fall fans, the powerful impact of Kenny Everett's World's Worst Records Show album and the plastic carrier-bag left onstage that Tessa still has 25 years later. @rocking_bob @tessanorton https://www.amazon.co.uk/Excavate-Wonderful-Frightening-World-Fall-ebook/dp/B0873XZ21B Yeah Yeah Yeah by Bob Stanley …https://www.amazon.co.uk/Yeah-Story-Modern-Pop/dp/0571322409/ref=sr_1_4?dchild=1&qid=1617954172&refinements=p_27%3ABob+Stanley&s=books&sr=1-4 Get bonus content on Patreon Hosted on Acast. Bob has compiled and produced an enviable collection of compilation albums for his own record label Croydon Municipal and with a host of collaborators for Ace records. Bob shares his love for 70s compilations albums, library culture, the joy of discovering forgotten tracks and the wonderful nature of sequencing that the likes of K-Tel and Ronco provided us with.We also explore the evolution of NOW through the 80s, how dance music came to the fore in the ‘90s and why we love collecting music in the UK.With the launch of his latest compilation, Café Exil: New Adventures in European Music 1972-1980, Bob also provides an insight into his own process of creating compilation albums; where inspiration comes from, his favourites and what themes he is looking to curate next. Amongst other accolades, Pete has co-authored two official books on the history of Now That's What I Call Music", and as Head of Music for Sainsburys, launched the exclusive ‘Own Brand' vinyl record label with Saint Etienne's Bob Stanley.Pete and I travelled back to the summer of 1986 to discuss NOW 7. Along the way we also chatted about musical memories growing up, influences and the compilation market that led to the success of LPs such as the NOW and HITs series in the 1980s. Expect starring roles in our conversation for - amongst others - Lovebug Starski, Wham!, Peter Gabriel, and honourable mentions for Mike Batt, the Grange Hill cast and (genuine forgotten 80s) Debbie Aimee!I hope that you will enjoy sharing in our '86 memories and insights.
