The 90's were such a wonderful time for horror. 1996 In particular really kickstarted a new wave of horror, especially the rebirth of slashers. Yes, we all know Scream but there was firehose of teens getting butchered in the late 90's to 2000's and Urban Legend was one of the most memorable ones starring a who's who of teen icons! Friend of the pod (and good friend of mine) Clay joins me to discuss real Urban Legends, working on film sets, other movies and so very much more! If you're not doing so already, please like and follow Classic American Movies on Instagram and Facebook. I do free movie giveaways, mini movie reviews and more! Also, I decided to dabble in making my own slasher film entitled “Bishop's Day”. Check out the Instagram page for updates.

One of our all-time favorite wacky and wild films is RuPaul's Starrbooty.Created during a lull in her career, the film revives one of Ru's early cable-access TV characters- Starbooty—a private detective turned sex worker who lands herself in increasingly ridiculous situations. The film celebrates RuPaul's love for sexploitation, melodrama, gratuitous nudity, and her circle of kooky friends. Many consider Starrbooty the launchpad for RuPaul's resurgence as host of RuPaul's Drag Race, a show that mainstreamed drag so successfully it has overshadowed many other styles and interpretations of the art form.Today, Starrbooty producer and acclaimed filmmaker André Robert Lee joins us to revisit this wonderfully twisted film and discuss the challenges and triumphs of being a queer Black creative. We also dive into his other fantastic projects, including Dirty Laundry (starring Jenifer Lewis and Loretta Devine) and The Prep School Negro, a documentary which follows young Black students adventures on their way to college. After a summer of legendary audio issues, Bree and friend of the show Frederick Blichert cap off the season with a playful romp through a home viewing favourite (“favourite” might be generous for Bree), Urban Legend. The movie obviously apes Scream every chance it gets, which might make it the ultimate movie through which to explore the context of late 90's blockbusters. In the fun of figuring out exactly what about this movie doesn't work – when in fact there's a bit about it that does work – we also look at what sets it apart from the horror movies it was trying so hard to imitate, and how its themes fits into the 2020's era of misinformation. Also, lots of love for Brad Douriff and Loretta Devine.
Happy birthday to the incredible Loretta Devine, born on Aug. 21, 1949, in Houston. Devine first gained fame as Lorrell Robinson in the Broadway hit "Dreamgirls," which won six Tonys. Over the years, she has starred in iconic African-American films like "Waiting to Exhale," "The Preacher's Wife," "This Christmas," and "For Colored Girls." What's your favorite scary movie?Oh wait, wrong movie. What's your favorite urban legend?Tune in now to listen to your favorite Gory Gays break down the 1998 'teen' slasher (where every teen is at least 30) "Urban Legend" - while Stanley praises the music and the campiness of Rebecca Gayheart's performance, Alex stands behind the gloomy background of the actual legends themselves, but ultimately we think everyone can agree we are anti-Natalie, and really… did we even need this film? We also discuss the beauty of Loretta Devine, Danielle Harris breaking out from her childhood horror-roles, and how we chose to celebrate Halloween this year... but we DID, however, forget to mention that the creepy janitor is played by horror vet Julian Richings!
