In today's episode, we have a discussion on relative energy deficient in sport, otherwise known as RED-S with Jake Riley and Maddie Alm. Maddie is a Registered Dietitian and the founder of Fueling Forward Sports Nutrition. Maddie has Masters in Nutritional Science from San Diego State. She completed her training and a registered dietitian at Lipscomb University in Nashville, Tennessee. She also competed at the University of Colorado in Boulder and currently runs professionally for Team Boss. Jake is an American professional long distance runner and 2020 Olympic marathoner. He currently lives and trains in Boulder, Colorado and is coached by 3-time Olympic marathoner, Lee Troop. Jake grew up in Washington and was an 8-time All-American at Stanford. He previously ran with the Hanson's Distance Project. Jake had one of the most memorable performances and comeback stories at the 2020 Olympic Marathon Trials in Atlanta where he grabbed an American flag with about 400m to go and ran to a sprint finish where he finished 2nd. In June 2022, Jake shared his story about being diagnosed with RED-S in Runner's World. His story helped to open the door to discussing RED-S in the context of male athletes. The term RED-S evolved from what was previously described as the female athlete triad. In 2014, the IOC published a description of RED-S to include a broader definition of the health and performance consequences as well as both inclusion of both male and female athletes. Identifying an athlete with RED-S is not always straight forward. By sharing an athlete and expert perspective, we hope that this episode can provide a unique lens into the challenges, both physical and mental, that go into diagnosing and managing RED-S. We also get an update on where Jake is at several months after sharing his diagnosis as well as Maddie's advice on how athletes can make positive changes that can be long lasting. What we talked about: 3:55- Introduction to Maddie 4:25- Introduction to Jake 7:25- RED-S and low energy availability 9:55- Early signs and symptoms of RED-S 12:35- Jake's diagnosis with RED-S and working with Maddie 20:50- What prompted him to seek help 26:30- Warning signs and symptoms to pay attention to as an athlete 32:35- Questions to ask male athletes to diagnose RED-S 34:10- Treatment approach 41:50- Timeline of recovery 45:20- Differentiating between being tired in training and symptoms of RED-S 51:30- Jake's recovery from achilles surgery and where he is at in training 1:01:15- Fueling during the marathon 1:05:35- Take home messages about RED-S for athletes and clinicians Show notes: Jake on Instagram Maddie on Instagram Fueling Forward

Some people I don't write any questions down. I just have the talking points like I want to make sure we hit this. It just totall depends on who they are. A coach for instance, I'm gonna be way more specific with questions written down ahead of time.” (12:04) “I think when people are honest about the help they have it makes the rest of us feel like, ‘Ok, maybe I'm not doing X, Y, & Z, but I don't have help here.' And it's really easy to compare your life to someone else's and think, ‘Well, if she can do all these things, why can't I?' Nobody's life is the exact same.” (14:23) “This is what I'm known for. I say, ‘I'm probably just gonna do five miles,' because that's all I feel like doing in the moment. And then I usually tag a couple more on at the end. Famous last words, ‘I'm just gonna do five miles.'” (37:38) “If there's a soccer day or something like that that's really packed with family stuff, that run is happening the day before or the day after. The run is not taking priority over work and family. I think that there's a way to do that, it's just figuring it out.” (50:41) Resources MentionedWhitney's LinkedIn – https://www.linkedin.com/in/whitney-heins-02ba3b5 (https://www.linkedin.com/in/whitney-heins-02ba3b5) The Mother Runners Club – https://www.themotherrunners.com/ (https://www.themotherrunners.com/) Lindsey's Website – https://lindseyhein.com/ (https://lindseyhein.com/) Lindsey's Instagram – https://www.instagram.com/lindseyhein626/?hl=en (https://www.instagram.com/lindseyhein626/?hl=en) Lindsey's Twitter – https://twitter.com/lindseyhein (https://twitter.com/lindseyhein) Lindsey's Facebook – https://www.facebook.com/illhaveanotherpodcast/ (https://www.facebook.com/illhaveanotherpodcast/) Lindsey's Portfolio of Podcasts: Why Is Everyone Yelling? Lee Troop grew up in Geelong, Australia and started running as an elementary school kid with his dad. His journey from that kid to become a 3-time Olympian and then ultimately to become coach of Olympic marathon team member Jacob Riley is equal parts fascinating and inspiring.  The journey has been far from easy, however, and Chris and Shanna chat with Lee about it all. He shares the story of the personal transformation of his father that would lead them to start running together. He discusses when he knew running could be career for him in spite of not having formal coaching until he was 18 years old. He talks about his hero Australian marathoner Robert de Castella who inspired him to move up to the marathon and to always compete clean.  Lee is very open and forthright about his challenges in life including under-performing his own expectations in all three of his Olympics in 2000, 2004, and 2008 and overcoming periods of time as an athlete and coach when he lost joy in the sport.  Through difficult times, Lee began working with Jacob Riley which led to a measure of redemption for both of them when Jacob placed 2nd at the Olympic Marathon Trials to earn his trip to the Tokyo Olympics. Lee recounts his emotions embracing Jacob at the finish line in Atlanta, while also being open about "selling his soul" by supporting Jacob's decision to wear the Nike Alphafly in that race. We ask Lee about that decision and get his perspective on how technology, corruption in sports governance, and doping are affecting the simple beauty of our sport. In spite of all of it, Lee still believes in the power of running to change lives. He is still coaching hard, advocating for clean sport, and giving back to the next generation of athletes. Thank you Lee for staying the course with grit and integrity. You are an inspiration.

Team Boulder's Lee Troop joins the show to share how Jake Riley went from an Achilles injury that nearly ended his career to the 2020 U.S. Olympic Marathon Trials runner-up and headed to the Olympics. Riley ran 2:13 for his first marathon in 2014 and then finished 15th at the 2016 trials. He also went on to finish 12th at the 2012 U.S. Olympic Track and Field Trials in Eugene, Ore. but then his career got rocky. He went through a divorce, moved from Michigan to Colorado to pursue his mechanical engineering masters and then joined Troop's training. An Achilles injury was later diagnosed as Haglund's syndrome and he had to undergo surgery. Troop shares the process of how they worked back to the starting line and then what ultimately led to his major breakout of a 2:10:36 in Chicago last fall. Among the key pieces of insight shared by Troop are the pre-race talks that he shared with Riley and race plans in both Chicago and Atlanta. We also share how Riley developed the "No more next times" mantra, the decision to wear the AlphaFly shoes and much more. Support for this episode comes from Stryd. "Running is the most simplistic and puristic sport you can do. You put one foot in front of the other, you run as hard as you can for as long as you can, and whoever crosses the finish line first wins. But to see people now not have that joy—and I ask a lot of athletes, 'Why did you start running?' and a lot of them started running because they wanted to run with their dad or they wanted to make the school team, they speak with all this joy—and it saddens me that at this point a lot of them don't have joy. They've got tunnel vision, and they're gonna make it, and they'll sacrifice everything, and they come to training and you can just see that there's this tension in them and they just can't let it go. They've already analyzed, overanalyzed, and psychoanalyzed just the training workout and I'm like, 'Just let it go!' You'll have good runs and you'll have bad ones—if you have a bad one, catch up with some friends and go out and have a beer and just let it go. So, trying to get them to realize that training is a cumulative effect and it takes weeks, and months, and years, and if you've already got this attitude starting out in your career, you're not gonna last. So trying to get them centered as to why they do it, what they want to get out of it, but more importantly enjoying it." This week's guest is one of my favorite people in the sport of running: Lee Troop. Troopy, as he's known by his friends, is a retired three-time Olympian in the marathon for Australia with a personal best of 2:09:49 for the distance. He's lived in Boulder, Colorado for the last 10 years, where he coaches a handful of athletes and puts on local running events around Boulder County. I caught up with Troop a little over a month ago and we had a great, wide-ranging conversation. We talked about his competitive career, from joining his dad on runs when he was 11 years old, to running at South Plains College in Levelland, Texas, and how his brief time there prepared him for a career as an international athlete. We talked about retiring from the sport in his early 40s and why Masters racing just doesn't interest him. Along those lines, we got into the struggles that athletes face after retirement and what he would recommend based on his own experiences. We talked about coaching, and why he stepped back from it last year after one of his athletes, Jonathan Grey, committed suicide—and also how that experience affected him and changed his perspective moving forward. Troopy has a real passion for people, and that's something we also got into here, along with a discussion of mental well-being and relationships, why it's important to work on those two things throughout your life, and so much more.
