“Women with kids keep getting better. You become strong. It's the opposite of what some people might think. Because sometimes people would be like, ‘if you go on maternity leave, you might be done.' It's becoming the opposite. If you look at Keira (D'Amato) or Aliphine (Tuliamuk), you can bounce back and do better than what you used to. Even in my 20s, I wasn't feeling the way I feel right now, especially in the road racing.” My guest for this episode is Betsy Saina who has re-emerged as a star in 2023 after giving birth to her son, running 2:21 at the Tokyo Marathon and just won the USATF 25K Championships this past weekend in Grand Rapids, Michigan. That marathon performance in Tokyo was It was her first marathon since giving birth to her son and her first marathon since becoming an American citizen. She's certainly someone in the conversation for one of the three spots on the line at the U.S. Olympic Marathon Trials that will determine the team for the Summer Games in Paris. On Sunday, the New York City Marathon returned to full capacity for the first time since 2019 and although the warmer conditions made it tough for runners across the board, the city was alive to celebrate everyone from the 1st to the 50,000th finisher. Kenyans swept the men's and women's pro races for the fourth time this year on the World Marathon Majors stage. The women's race saw a major surprise as Sharon Lokedi, the former NCAA champion out of Kansas, won in 2:23:23 in her debut marathon. 33-year-old Evans Chebet came away with the victory in a wild and unpredictable men's race in 2:08:41 to complete his Boston-New York title double in 2022. “I'm in this whole new world of what they call marathon training. I don't know. I'm still in denial!” Emily Durgin is having one heck of a year on the run. The adidas-sponsored professional runner lives and trains in Flagstaff, AZ (though, she says, "Maine will always be home home"), and 2022 has been good to her. She kicked off the year at the Houston Half Marathon, where she ran a personal best (67:54), and became the sixth-fastest American woman ever in the half marathon. And then, the personal bests just kept coming: Emily ran PBs in the 10,000 meters, the 5K, the 10K, and the 15K. But in some ways, she's just getting started. Emily is moving up in distance! She's gearing up for her 26.2-mile debut at the TCS New York City Marathon in November! "I saw a lot of people, especially on social media, saying, ‘She's not gonna make it.' And in my mind, I wanted to prove them wrong. And I think, honestly, that might have been my biggest downfall — trying to do more too soon, to prove to people that I could do this." It would be putting it lightly to say that the past two years have been a whirlwind for professional runner Aliphine Tuliamuk. At the beginning of 2020, she won the U.S. Olympic Team Trials Marathon, earning herself a spot on Team USA for the Tokyo Olympics. Then, when the Olympics were postponed due to the pandemic, she and her partner, Tim, saw that as an opportunity: Instead of going to Japan and competing at the Olympics that summer, Aliphine was newly pregnant. She gave birth to a baby girl, Zoe, in January 2021. Then, with the Olympics just seven months away, new-mom Aliphine went all-in on marathon training (with a plus-one!). She traveled to Tokyo, lined up at the start of her first Olympic race, and had to pull out after 20K due to an injury. Today on the show, Aliphine talks about taking a much-needed break after Tokyo, and about how she knew — physically and emotionally — that she was ready to get back on the run. The Hoka NAZ Elite athlete is currently happy, healthy, and ready to light the fall racing scene on fire. (Her words!) This weekend, Aliphine will race the USATF 20K Championships, and then she will line up for her first marathon since Tokyo at the 2022 TCS New York City Marathon in November. We're taking the next couple weeks off to recharge so we're re-running one of my favorite episodes from the early days of the podcast, a conversation I had in May of 2018 with Aliphine Tuliamuk. It was episode 15, I am fairly certain it was Aliphine's first podcast, and at the time not many people knew her story despite the fact that she was nine-time national champion! Since then she's added another national championship to her resume—the 2020 U.S. Olympic Trials title—and now she's a household name in American distance running. This is a great episode to revisit if you listened to it a few years ago and certainly one to check out if you didn't. You'll learn all about Aliphine's upbringing in Kenya, how she got into running, what it was like coming to the United States and assimilating to a new country and culture, how she deals with pressure, and a lot more. (You might also want to listen in to episode 102 with Aliphine, which we recorded shortly after she won the Olympic Trials in Atlanta.)This episode is brought to you by:— Tracksmith. In this episode, Candace talks with guest Tony about the medical news that he and his partner received, himself requiring an open heart surgery, and his partner getting diagnosed with Early Onset Alzheimer's. He talks about making a counter-intuitive decision that went against what some research would suggest for patients with Early Onset Alzhemizers; instead, they retired, sold their home and became nomads running marathons and half marathons all around the world. Tony talks about what it was like to travel around the world running race after race in places like Madagascar, Bhutan and the Great Wall of China with nothing but a suitcase. The pandemic did not put a stop to their plan and they are still running around the world over 7 years later.Anthony L. Copeland-Parker was a professional pilot/manager for thirty-seven years, the last twenty-seven with United Parcel Service. His last job had him managing pilots and flying B757/767-type air-craft all over the world. When he retired, he began writing his blog, PlayHard-HaveFun.com. Since then, he and his partner Catherine have traveled to eighty-two different countries. They have run at least a half-marathon in thirty-five countries and on all seven continents. His book Running All over the World, adapted from a blog he wrote during their travels, is a nonfiction account of our five-plus years of flying, running, walking, sailing, and sightseeing from Atlanta to Antarctica and back again. Part travelogue and part medical memoir, it transports listeners to exotic places like Madagascar, Bhutan, and the Great Wall of China while at the same time offering a day-to-day look at what it means to have nothing but what's in your suitcase. It's also an offbeat love story, recounting the trials and tribulations of an ex-pilot with a passion for vistas and logistics and a woman so tough she walks a half-marathon in the Australian Outback mere weeks after breaking her ankle. During their years as nomads, they pushed their physical and mental limitations as often as they could - and finished every race  hand in hand.Get a copy of Tony's book hereFollow Tony on FacebookFollow Tony on IGFollow Tony on TwitterFind Tony on Linkedin

“I would work around the clock, weekends, because I was passionate, and that's one thing I say to anyone that's passionate about what they do: make sure you do things that are sustainable, because no matter how passionate you are, no matter how much you love your job, if you're doing it 24/7, seven days a week, and you don't give yourself a break just because you love it, it's still work and it will eventually catch up to you. And I did have those moments when I was a one-man operation—I loved it, and that's why I was so quick to hire somebody else on my team, just to make sure we build the infrastructure to sustain ourselves for many years ahead.” Hawi Keflezighi is one of the top agents in all of endurance sports, and one of the nicest guys that I've ever known. He is the founder and president of Hawi Management and his agency represents some of the top athletes in track and field, road racing, trail running, and triathlon. His most notable client is his brother Meb, who he has been representing since 2005, and his roster also includes Aliphine Tuliamuk, Alexi Pappas, Katie Zafares, and Joe Gray, amongst others. We covered a pretty wide range of topics in this conversation, from the book he's been helping his dad out with to the role that storytelling has played throughout his life. We talked about coming to the U.S. from Eritrea via Italy and some of his earliest memories as a young kid, to how he ended up at UCLA, and the path he followed to becoming a sports agent. Finally, we got into the weeds of the business, marketing, and sponsorship side of professional running and discussed how contracts have evolved over the past 15 years, what the job responsibilities are for an athlete today, how he sees things evolving in the future, and a lot more. This episode is brought to you by: — New Balance: I was recently able to get my hands on a pair of the new Fresh Foam 1080v11 and I was shocked to love them even more than I did last year's v10 model. New Balance claims the 1080 offers the ultimate ride, and I'd have to agree. It's the best fitting shoe I own and the Fresh Foam X cushioning feels super comfortable underneath my feet. It's lightweight and flexible, but also responsive and durable—basically the perfect trainer to log most of your miles in, which is what I do. I wear it on most of my non-workout days and for long runs too. Check out the Fresh Foam 1080v11 on newbalance.com and consider adding a pair to your rotation. — Girls on the Run has been inspiring girls to know and activate their limitless potential and boldly pursue their dreams. Sunday marks the one-year anniversary of last year’s US Olympic Marathon Trials in Atlanta (well one year minus one day; the Trials were held on February 29, making a true one-year anniversary impossible). The world has turned upside down over the last 12 months, but the six athletes selected on that day to represent Team USA in Japan are in the same spot they were this time a year ago: 23 weeks away from the Olympic Marathon. Of course, some things have changed. Galen Rupp is healthier. Jake Riley and Molly Seidel picked up new sponsors. Abdi Abdirahman is 44 years old (doesn’t it still seem impossible he made this team?). And none of them have the leg soreness from racing 26.2 miles on Atlanta’s hills — though Aliphine Tuliamuk does have the challenge of restoring her body to racing shape after giving birth to daughter Zoe on January 13. With that one-year anniversary in mind, USATF hosted five of the six Olympians on media calls over the last two days. Sally Kipyego spoke yesterday (you can read our story on her here). Today’s call featured Rupp, Riley, Seidel, and Tuliamuk (Abdirahman was not on either call). Here’s what we learned. https://www.letsrun.com/news/2021/02/... #OlympicMarathon #GalenRupp #traffic In March of 2020, I slipped on the illegally dumped cooking grease in front of John’s Burger and couldn’t walk for 6 weeks. This was my first injury since I started Endurance Training in 1979. Then in late April of 2020, I ended up in the hospital for the first time in my life. The diagnosis was Congestive Heart Failure. But what you don’t know is what the road to get to Atlanta looked like. One way was to fulfill orders for her crocheted Allie Resiliency Beanies that took off following her victory at the U.S. Olympic Marathon Trials in late February 2020. The other way, she and her long-time boyfriend Tim Gannon decided, was to start a family. So this month, the 31-year-old Tuliamuk will give birth in Santa Fe, New Mexico. Then when she is physically ready, Tuliamuk will resume training with Northern Arizona Elite in Flagstaff to prepare for the Olympic marathon Aug. 7 in Sapporo, site of the 1972 Winter Olympics selected for distance events due to excessive summer heat in Tokyo. For Tuliamuk and Gannon, engaged to be married, the birth of their daughter already named Zoe will be a joyous start to 2021 that her coach believes will carry over through the hard work necessary to prepare for the Olympics.  "Aliphine is as happy as she's ever been, and I just think there's something to be said for that," NAZ Elite coach Ben Rosario said. "Any couple who's really wanted to have a baby then have one, sure there's stress that comes with that and sleepless nights. But overall there's joy. And Aliphine has always competed best when she's happy. Tuliamuk naturally was ecstatic after conquering the demanding trials course in Atlanta to win in 2:27.33 and become the first Olympic qualifier for NAZ Elite, going into its eighth year of operation. Her finish-line celebration with teammates Stephanie Bruce (sixth) and Kellyn Taylor (eighth) is one of the indelible 2020 Olympic sport memories before the Tokyo Games were postponed less than a month later. In early December, Tuliamuk made her pregnancy public via social media. "Tim and I always knew that we wanted to have a family," she said. "The goal was post 2020 Olympics. As it turned out this year had other plans. By mid-April we were convinced there will be no more races this season. The darkness ahead was too much, we created our own light at the end of the tunnel. "If anyone told me this would be the case 10 months ago, I would have called them crazy, but this is 2020. We planned this knowing that we would have six-plus months to get ready for Tokyo Olympics."   What's New in the 303:   BRAC a Year in Review and What’s Ahead with President Andy Johnson 303Endurance caught up with Bicycle Racing Association of Colorado (BRAC) President, Andy Johnson to take a look back at 2020 and all the challenges and how they will help BRAC moving forward in 2021 and beyond to benefit not only bike racing community, but the cycling community in general.    303: You have mentioned a new name for BRAC, are you ready to reveal that at this time and if so what is it?   Andy: Years ago when BRAC was under different leadership, the organization was keen on creating a URL that speaks to the larger vision of BRAC’s role in the Colorado cycling community.  So, if approved at Club Council in February, the Bicycle Racing Association of Colorado (which is a mouthful) and BRAC (which is always awkward to say and explain) will be known as ColoradoCycling.Org.  The name change affords us the ability to talk about cycling and cycling events in the broader context of our Colorado community.   Castle Rock Fat Bike Snow Adventure and Cultural Hub Extraordinaire? Elevating American Distance Running: Ben Rosario  Ben Rosario is the head coach of the HOKA Northern Arizona Elite. His athletes have been wildly successful in recent years, with the most notable being Aliphine Tuliamuk's win at the 2020 US Olympic Trials. His athletes Stephanie Bruce and Kellyn Taylor also finished in the top ten of that race, and on the men's side, Scott Fauble, a 2:09 marathoner, came in 12th.   In this episode, Coach Claire talks to Ben about the Olympic Marathon Trials, focusing on how well his female athletes did, how HOKA NAZ treats female athletes, especially in light of the Nike Oregon Project, and why he thinks so many female runners are still posting PRs well into their 30s.  Ben also shares some great coaching advice, his training philosophy, and his insight into why so many world records have been posted during COVID.    At the time of this recording, Ben was preparing for The Marathon Project held on December 20. Coach Claire asks Ben for his predictions and will post the results here in the show notes following the race. Like many coaches, Ben started out as an accomplished runner himself as a member of the Hansons Brooks team and he competed in the Olympic Trials twice before turning to coaching full time.  In his six+ years with Northern Arizona Elite, Ben’s athletes have won U.S. National Titles in cross country and on the roads at 10k, the half marathon and the 25k, as well as New Zealand National Titles on the track and the roads.  HOKA NAZ Elite athletes have recorded 8 top-10 finishes at World Marathon Majors. The team has been represented at the World Cross Country Championships, the World Half Marathon Championships, and at the World Track and Field Championships.  His athletes have also competed at the European Athletics Championships, the Great Edinburgh International XC Meet, the NACAC Cross Country Championships, the NACAC Track Championships, the Pan American Cup Cross Country Meet and the Pan American Games.  In 2016, the team produced two sixth-place finishes at the Olympic Trials Marathon and two fourth-place finishes in the 10,000 meters at the Olympic Track and Field Trials. At the 2020 Olympic Marathon Trials, four HOKA NAZ Elite athletes posted top 20 finishes, including three in the top eight in the women’s race led by Aliphine Tuliamuk–the Trials Champion.    Questions Ben is asked: 4:19 2020 has been pretty crazy for everyone in the world but specifically for the team that you lead, Northern Arizona Elite. Let's go back in time to February when you were getting ready for the Olympic Marathon Trials in Atlanta. Can you take us back there and recap what you were thinking?   5:10 Atlanta is a pretty tough course with all the hills. Obviously that was not a problem for at least your female athletes.   5:28 Your athlete, Aliphine Tuliamuk, won the women's race and was planning to head to Tokyo when the world shut down. What was that like as her coach?   6:41 I would love to talk to you about Aliphine Tuliamuk’s recent announcement that she is pregnant and due in January. As her coach, I’m sure she came to you and said, “Hey, Ben, this is what I’m going to do.” What was that conversation like?    7:26 How tough was it keeping Aliphine’s pregnancy a secret?   8:33 You are quite experienced in elite mom runners. Several women on your team are moms and are still just killing it. I would love to talk about Kellyn Taylor, Stephanie Bruce. I would love to talk about Stephanie for a minute. She is almost 37 years old and still getting PRs in the 10K. How is that possible?   10:14 It didn’t used to be so long ago that mid-30s was old for a runner but now that’s not the case, and I think maybe it has something to do with belief, too, seeing all these new great examples.   11:06 I want to keep going back to the women because you have been coaching some really great ones obviously, and American women are seeing a resurgence in endurance running. American men maybe not so much. Would you want to talk about that?   12:32 I want to talk to you about how women are treated in this sport. We’ve all heard about the crazy things with the Nike Oregon Project and how Kara Goucher was treated when she was pregnant. I don’t think that it’s going to be the same story with Hoka. I would love to have you share what you could say about how Hoka supports its female athletes.   15:06 I think you’re right that when all that came out about the Oregon Project that we thought as fans, “Oh. This is the way they’re all treated.” But it’s great to hear that that’s not the case.   15:34 Whenever I get a coach on, I love to talk about coaching advice to hopefully help someone who’s listening become a better runner. Do you have different training approaches for the kids who come straight out of college than you do for your veteran elite runners?   17:03 Let’s talk in a little bit more detail about the training advice. Most runners get the advice hard days are hard; easy days are easy. But then you throw in some medium days. I think that’s where a lot of recreational runners trip up is those medium days. Can you talk about those and what they’re for and how you use them?   19:22 You don’t always have to run your hardest, right?   20:11 You're also a fan of high mileage and I want to know what that means to you because as runners we all want to run as much as possible but clearly there’s a point when high is too high. So what is that point? Obviously it’s individual, but how does somebody know what is high for them? Where’s that sweet spot?   22:51 Besides your athletes, this year we've seen so many world-record breaking performances in 2020, which seems counterintuitive since there have been so few races, the world is not normal, and people can’t train the way they usually do. What do you attribute that to?     24:14 I’m sure the cynics would say the number of world-record breaking performances in 2020 are because of the shoes or because there’s not enough drug tests in COVID. What do you say about those kinds of things?   25:25 So you think there should be regulations on running shoes like them being available to the public or there’s a stack height, that kind of stuff; is that what you mean?   27:00 What's next for you and your athletes?  How do you predict the running world will change in 2020?     28:29 This will probably air after the Marathon Project this weekend, but I would love to have you handicap it a little bit, tell us who’s all racing and what do you predict?   31:40 How many participants are there for the marathon? Questions I Ask Everyone:   32:17 If you could go back and talk to yourself when you started running, what advice would you give?   33:31 What is the greatest gift running has given you?    33:56 Where can listeners connect with you? Quotes by Ben: “I think what we’re learning is that women can run really well into their mid-to-late 30s, and we’re learning that not only from Steph but Shalane, Des, Kellyn, Molly Huddle; all kinds of women in the US and beyond are showing that in distance running, women keep getting better.”   “In general, my goal anyway is to keep people around here for a really long time. So we’re definitely taking a long-term approach and we’re not trying to necessarily throw everything at them right away. We’re trying to slowly add pieces over time, and you see that with the folks who have stayed with us for a long time just getting better and better and better and better, and that’s what we want.”    “I think uninterrupted training leads to great performances for anybody at any level.”   “The sport has a side to it now that is very technological. And so does golf. And so does swimming. And so does baseball, right? And every sport almost. And like all those other sports, we need to make sure that the playing field is fair.” Take a Listen on Your Next Run     Want more awesome interviews and advice? “When I saw that positive pregnancy test, it was basically the highlight of my year. Looking at the place I am emotionally and mentally, I am very happy. I don’t think I’ve ever been happier.” – Aliphine Tuliamuk This is a short and special episode of the podcast regarding the big news that U.S. Olympic Marathon Trials champion Aliphine Tuliamuk is pregnant with her first child. A baby girl is expected in late January. She made her announcement on Sunday afternoon in an Instagram post. I published a story for Sports Illustrated about how she came to this decision but also dives into her family history since she is one of 32 siblings. Now, she’s starting her own. The story includes some insight from Northern Arizona Elite head coach Ben Rosario on her possible road back + HOKA One One’s sports marketing manager Mike McManus on how Aliphine won’t face any reductions or have to rush back to action. Aliphine just re-signed with HOKA One One for the next four years. She is going to have plenty of time to get ready for the Olympics and this just became one of the inspirational stories to follow ahead of Tokyo. Apologies for the audio quality. Initially didn’t intend to release this as a podcast. I recorded it off of my iPhone speaker for the Sports Illustrated story. After sharing the story with my coach, she mentioned to me just how much of a "bright light" Aliphine is for the sport so I decided it would be best if you heard from her! Sarah Crouch Takeover We all live in our own comfort zones or personal bubbles.  Stepping out of our realm of comfort can be extremely hard and even scary and will come with unexpected challenges. Sometimes these challenges overcome us and seem to be too much, but when we rise above these challenges and get out of our comfort zones amazing things can happen.  Kenyan born Aliphine Tuliamuk is one such individual that left her comfort zone to pursue her dreams, becoming an inspiration to us all.  Leaving her friends and family behind in Kenya, Aliphine moved to the United States where she earned a college education, was a First Team NCAA Division I All-American in cross country, multi-event USATF Champion, and most recently, winner of the 2020 Women’s Olympic Marathon Trials. Preparation Precedes Opportunity Aliphine was raised in Posoy, in the county of Pokot, Kenya.  Getting an education wasn’t something many people strived to do, noting that the highest education many could reach in Kenya was a community college education.  However, as Aliphine traveled, her desire to get an education and run began to take form and develop.  During her senior year in high school in 2008, Aliphine learned about the United States and the opportunities available to her to run and attain a college education. During this time of her life Aliphine made many sacrifices to further her running abilities, including moving away from family for months at a time to get access to better training.  This preparation was vital to her success when the opportunity to run at a University in the United States of America presented itself. A former student athlete of Iowa State University was in Kenya looking for athletes and spoke with Aliphine about athletic scholarships in America.  It was at this point Aliphine decided she wanted to run in America and that she would attend Iowa State University.  By 2009, Aliphine had left her family, her country, and all she knew to pursue her dreams of running and moved to America.  After spending two years at Iowa State, Aliphine transferred to Witchita State University where her abilities and talents began to flourish. Find a Role Model Over the course of the next several years Aliphine would go on to contend and win multiple USATF events, raging from 5k’s to 25k’s.  However, Aliphine attributed much of her success not just to her personal training and dedication, but to having strong role models. No matter what your goals or admiration in life may be, it is important to find someone who can provide you with advice and lead you down the right path.  These people, whether they be family, friends, training partners, or a teacher, can inspire hope and confidence in you and provide you with the extra needed motivation to accomplish your goals. Aliphine strove to always maintain a hard work ethic in order to inspire others to accomplish their dreams.  Make sure you take a moment to share your love and gratitude for your sport, or whatever it is you may do, because if you work hard and continue to want it, whether that be a PR in the 5k, to finish your first marathon, or run in the Olympic Trials, you can be an inspiration to other people. Running has provided Aliphine with a platform in which to inspire others and have a greater and deeper impact on people’s lives.  Your dreams are valid and obtainable as long as you work hard and seek guidance from your role models or mentors that have gone before you. 2020 Olympic Marathon Trials After Aliphine moved to the United States of America she made the decision early on that she wanted to become a citizen and enjoy the rights to vote and compete for America.  In 2016 she gained U.S. citizenship, which allowed her to compete in the 2020 Olympic Trials with the goal of earning a spot on the U.S.A. Olympic team. Entering the race on February 29, 2020, Aliphine said she felt good, her training had gone well, and her head was in the right place.  Everything was pointing in the right direction and she was determined to give this race everything she had.  However, you can put forth every bit of training necessary, both physical and mentally for the marathon, but over the course of 26.2 miles, anything can happen.  Donning one of her trademark, self-crocheted beanies, she was ready to run the most important race of her life. As Aliphine began to pull away from the pack, she as not alone.  Molly Seidel, an elite runner and first-time marathoner was hanging off her shoulder.  As opposed to try and leave her behind, Aliphine and Molly began to push each other and offer words of encouragement, realizing they were both their for the same reason: to make the Olympic team.  Aliphine and Molly were able to push each other to ensure they both made the team.  In the end, it was Aliphine who won the 2020 Olympic Women’s Marathon Trials with a time of 2:27:23, earning herself a spot on the U.S.A. Olympic team. While this is absolutely incredible, Aliphine said she still feels like her best race is ahead of her. While Aliphine did make the Olympic Team, her teammates did not.  She owes a great deal to them for pushing her through her workouts, for encouraging her when she struggled, and for being there for her when training was hard and painful.  As a teammate who has not always won, Aliphine said it is important to be happy for your teammates and not just yourself.  If you don’t win, you can still show your appreciation and support for your teammates who ran well, and when you lose, remember how special your victories are.  This is a good lesson that should be incorporated in all of what we do.  Be happy for those around you and support your friends and teammates, win or lose. “What I know is the aspect of being looked at differently because of our national heritage – in this case as Kenyan athletes who also happen to be Black in the United States of America. It’s real...One of the things that bothered me many times was that I would go and run a race and if it was a United States championship, they would say ‘Kenyan-born Sam Chelanga.’ What do you get by that? You get to tell people this is the real champion and this is not the real champion because he is Kenyan-born. My performance and my hard work go through the window.” Lots of people know of Sam from his success as a three-time NCAA cross country champion out of Liberty. He set the NCAA 10,000 meter record of 27:08.49 in the same race that Chris Solinsky broke 27 to set the American record. Those accomplishments came before he became an American citizen in 2015. It was something he wanted for a while and patiently waited out the process until it became official. As a professional, he had some success including being the alternate for the 2016 Olympics in the men’s 10,000 meters and then taking well to the roads. Then in 2018, he retired to enlist in the Army at 33 years old. It was a sudden announcement that surprised many because he was in the middle of an Olympic cycle. He explains so much behind what called him to do that along with many of the other major decisions in his life – on this podcast and also in his new book “With The Wind: Finding Victory Within.” The book will come out on July 28. Molly Seidel: Achieve Your Goals By Letting Go Of Them - R4R 193

The Running for Real Podcast

Think back to the first time you tried something new.   Were you scared?  Nervous that you may embarrass yourself or even fail?  Or did you feel like maybe you didn’t belong there?  Any one of these thoughts would be a perfectly natural response to trying something new.  However, changing our mindset from fear and nervousness to confidence in our abilities and believing in ourselves can help us eliminate doubt from our minds and allow us to put forth our best effort.  Molly Seidel, did just that!  In her first ever marathon, after an ongoing battle with eating disorders and hampered with multiple serious injuries throughout her running career, Molly finished second at the 2020 Women’s Olympic Marathon Trial, earning herself the opportunity to represent the United States of America at the 2021 Olympics.  Cultivating Early Potential When we think of running for our high school team, we often envision there actually being a team, as well as being surrounded by training partners that will push you and motivate you to train.  This was not the case for Molly.  Beginning in her freshman year, Molly was the only member of her high school cross country team.  She had to learn to be self-driven and self-sufficient in order to further her fitness and compete at a high level.  Beginning in her freshman year and ending in her senior year, Molly had won each state championship, as well as the 1600-meter and 3200-meter track races.  Molly then went on to compete at the Footlocker National Cross-Country race, which she also won. Molly fell in love with running because it wasn’t something anyone was forcing or pressuring her to do.  She, like many of us, developed her own personal relationship with the sport.  But that doesn’t mean there weren’t challenges along the way. Recruited out of high school to run at Notre Dame on a full ride scholarship brought new and difficult experiences.  While she did win Division 1 NCAA titles in Cross Country, as well as the Indoor 3k, 5k, and 10k, it took a lot of work.  She went from being first in the nation to 5th, 6th, or 7thon her team.   Not only was she struggling physically, she struggled mentally with her body image and the shame put on her by her first Notre Dame coach.  Dealing with negativity and being told she wasn’t good enough and a waste of a scholarship throughout her first two years damaged her and left her feeling like she had no control of her own life. Finding Control in the Wrong Places Recognizing that women and men mature differently, especially as they work their way through high school and into college sports is an important thing to understand.  You can’t treat men and women the same or tell them to just get over it and expect them too.  Molly found that there was little room to accept women growing into their bodies at the collegiate level.  This added to the anxiety that Molly was already feeling.  As a control mechanism to this anxiety, Molly turned to an eating disorder to garner some form of control over her own life.  Focusing on calories and how much she could eat to provide her with just enough fuel to get through workouts became her life.  This lead to malnourishment, low bone density, and lead to multiple injuries.  Confiding in her second coach at Notre Dame, Molly realized she needed to change her way of thinking and entered eating disorder targeted treatment for 4 months, followed by two years in therapy.  This helped her to identify that the root problem wasn’t just body image, but anxiety and the need to feel like she was in control of one aspect of her life.  If you are dealing with an eating disorder, it is best to address it early so that you can get through it without becoming a statistic.  Approximately 1/3 of people will die from the disorder, 1/3 will recover, and 1/3 will deal with it for the rest of their life.  Realize you are not alone in this battle and know that overcoming this without a support system and targeted therapy may be impossible.  It is ok to ask for help to get better. The Power of Positivity Having a positive influence in our lives not only steers us in the right direction, but sometimes even carries us when we are unable to walk.  As Molly began to deal with her eating disorder she came to terms with the necessity of a healthy relationship with eating.  You are unable to perform at high levels and sustain a long career without properly fueling your body.  However, the toll that this disorder took on her body hindered her abilities moving forward.  Molly became so obsessed with running at the 2016 Olympic Trials that she made this her sole focus, holding on to this dream tight.  So tight, that she broke herself physically, resulting in her being sidelined during the 2016 Olympic Trials.  She continued to battle serious injuries, leading her to wonder if she’d ever run again. For one year, Molly ran on a broken hip.  Eventually she had surgery, causing her to take six months off.  Following that six month period she felt like she was ready to go, only to reinjure her hip.  Negative thoughts began to creep into her mind, wondering if this was it.  This is a common theme found in many runners.  Stress fractures, pulled muscles, tendonitis, or plantar fasciitis flare ups can cause many runners to question if they will ever run again.  But, as runners, we know there is something off in our brains, and that we are too stubborn and too dumb to give up running.  Molly called her coach from Notre Dame who told her to do what she always does: get through this, be patient, and know that you can do this!  The positivity from her coach was like a rope being thrown to someone stuck in a well.  Sometimes, that’s all it takes, is someone to tell you everything is going to be ok and to pull you out of the hole. 2020 Olympic Trials As Molly entered the 2020 Women’s Olympic Trials she did so without a whole lot of ego involved.  The past four years had been injury ridden and painstaking.  However, running in the trials was something she had reamed about for many years and she was not going to let the opportunity pass.  Molly had been waiting for this moment for many years and said she had prepared herself mentally for this to be the worst and most painful experience in her life.  Having never run a marathon, and having to start not on the front line, but in the third wave, recognizing many of the incredible runners around her, Molly began the most important race of her life.  She recalled passing through mile 18 and feeling the pain in her legs but knew she could still do this.  At mile 20 she began to worry, recognizing she was ahead of a lot of the other elite runners, she decided to maintain her pace, hoping to hold on to her spot.  The next six miles were extremely painful but focusing on all the hard work and dedication she had put into running throughout her life, she pushed through.  Running on the shoulder of Aliphine Tuliamuk and aided by her positive words to stick with her, Molly and Aliphine worked towards the common goal of making the U.S.A. Olympic Team.  Molly Seidel finished her first marathon in 2:27:31, taking second place and earning herself a spot on the Olympic team. Throughout her career Molly has experienced incredible lows and remarkable highs.  No matter what you do in running, whether you have a great race or a bad day on the course, it is important to remember that running does not define you and that you are a person outside of the sport.  Regardless of what stage of life you are in, continue to find joy and establish healthy relationships with what you do, whether that be running, eating, or anything else.  Trust the process and do the best you can, that’s all anyone can really ask. Resources: *Note* If you or someone you know is struggling from an eating disorder, it is time to talk to someone about it, it can make all the difference in the world.. Contact the National Eating Disorder Hotline at (800) 931-2237 or visit the NEDA website. Aliphine Tuliamuk almost quit running in 2014. Fast forward about 6 years, and in February 2020, she made the U.S. Olympic team. Coming in first place at the Olympic marathon trials in Atlanta, she broke the tape with an outstanding time of 2:27:23. In episode 111, we chat about everything from her upbringing in rural Kenya, running to and from school (as well as just about everywhere else), and her uncle’s suggestion that she come to the United States and go to university on an athletic scholarship. She talks to me about the difficult transition of attending college here, arriving in Iowa at Iowa State not knowing when she’d see her family again, then transferring to Wichita State where she had a ton of success in her sport. We talk about her aspirations to one day be a nurse, and the moment that inspired her to start crocheting and ultimately start an Etsy shop. And of course, she tells me all about that big Atlanta win, how she felt going into the day after a great training cycle with the Hoka Northern Arizona Elite, her strategy, and how she feels now that the games have been pushed back. “How I would like people to see me is ‘She didn’t give up.’ I’ve had so many times where I’ve had to come back from injuries – even as recently as this past summer. I remember calling coach Sparks after I hurt my hip again and literally sobbing to him on the phone that my running career was over because I thought that was it. After my surgery two years ago, they had given me a 50% chance of being able to run competitively again. They didn’t know if the surgery was going to take. It’s really difficult having to deal with that and mentally realizing this is the thing I love the most in the world and I may never get to do this again. I don’t know if it’s because I’m too dumb to do anything else but it was just this thought that I can’t quit now because I feel like I haven’t done the things that I’ve wanted to do yet and this feeling that I’m leaving something on the table. I know that I’m capable of more but if I don’t sort everything in my life and get over this victim mentality or get through some of these things, I’m not going to get there. That’s why I feel like there’s never been another thing that I love as much as this. That’s why even though I couldn’t run for six months. I just keep coming back to it." The first guest on 'More Than Running with Dana Giordano' is Molly Seidel. Just a few weeks after finishing second at the 2020 U.S. Olympic Marathon Trials in Atlanta, Dana and Molly sat down in her Fenway–Kenmore apartment to discuss how her much her life has changed since making her first U.S. Olympic team. The conversation was recorded before the coronavirus pandemic led to the postponement of the Tokyo Olympics to 2021. Topics touched upon in this episode include: - The build-up to the biggest race of her life - Putting us in her shoes for her marathon debut - Speaking up in response to the criticism of her Olympic teammates Aliphine Tuliamuk and Sally Kipyego for being Kenyan-born Americans. - The media’s coverage of her after the U.S. Olympic Marathon Trials and why she felt uneasy about it. - Handling the spotlight since being a star as a high school - How life changed after making the Olympic team - Donuts, hot ham and rolls - Seeking out a group and the perfect training set up with coach Jon Green - What she and her coach expected that she would place at the Olympic trials - What she wants to leave behind as her legacy within the sport - Advice for younger generations of runners: Just because you fail doesn’t make you a failure. - Showing off different bodies and diversity on the starting lines in the sport - And much more... ➡️ Follow Molly on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/bygolly.molly/ ▶ Follow Dana: https://twitter.com/dana_gio6 https://www.instagram.com/dana_gio/ ▶ Follow us: twitter.com/CitiusMag instagram.com/citiusmag facebook.com/citiusmag Recommended listen: Molly on Running on Om with Julia Hanlon | https://runningonom.com/podcast-225/ Photo for this episode's cover art by Kevin Morris | https://www.kevmofoto.com/

“The day that Kobe Bryant passed away, something snapped in me. I realized how short life can be—and I never met him, and I didn't even know him much, but the things that people were writing about him, there was just something that made me snap out of it. I realized that I hadn't seen my family for over 3 years. Why had I not seen them? I had not seen them because I was making excuses that I was working very hard to make the Olympic team, but I don't think I had my mind and heart in it. In that moment, I realized that I was wasting time and making excuses and not really taking advantage of the opportunity that I had, and in that moment, I decided that I was going to fully commit to making the team. So that was seriously the day that I recommitted myself to making the team and believing that I was going to make it.” Aliphine Tuliamuk recently won the U.S. Olympic Trials Marathon in Atlanta to qualify for her first Olympic team. She ran away from Molly Seidel in the last two miles of the race to break the tape in 2:27:23 and fulfill her American dream. The 30-year-old is a native of Kenya and became a U.S. citizen in 2016. She lives in Flagstaff, Arizona and trains with HOKA Northern Arizona Elite under coach Ben Rosario. Aliphine is a graduate of Wichita State University, where she was 14-time All-American and earned a degree in public health. She's a now a ten-time national champion as well as a two-time guest on this podcast, initially appearing back on Episode 15, which you should go listen to if you missed it the first time around. This conversation was mostly focused on the Olympic Trials, how the battle actually played out versus how Aliphine thought it would go, and what life has been like for her in the days since winning the race. We talked about Aliphine's Olympic dream and developing a renewed sense of appreciation for the opportunities she's been presented in life. Aliphine told me about the impact that Kobe Bryant's death had on her mindset heading into the Olympic Trials, why she was uncharacteristically nervous in the days before the race, what the final stretch of the race was like for her when she realized she was going to make the team, how she will use her elevated platform to inspire more people moving forward, and a lot more. It seems all too perfect for International Women's Day to fall on the same day as the release of this interview. For this episode, we are excited to talk with the new queen of US marathoning Aliphine Tuliamuk who won the US Olympic Marathon Trials last weekend in Atlanta to punch her ticket to Tokyo. Aliphine is a living example of the American dream. She's Kenya-born, one of 32 children, and moved to the US for college, becoming a US citizen in 2016. She now trains with team Hoka NAZ Elite under coach Ben Rosario. At the Trials, she and teammates Stephanie Bruce and Kellyn Taylor finished 1st, 6th, and 8th respectively to show the power of women working and training together. In this interview, Kara and Shanna chat with Aliphine and get to hear her story from her beginnings in Kenya all the way through the finishing tape in Atlanta as an American Champion. Aliphine discusses adapting to life in the US, her collegiate career, transitioning to pro running without a contract for the first several years, almost quitting a few times, and surviving several major injuries before finally finding her home at NAZ Elite. Yes, she is a fast runner, but she is so much more than that as a bright light in our sport. You will see what we mean when you listen to Aliphine talk about her desire to be a nurse or when she discusses clean sport and the young girls she wants to inspire at the finish line of the NYC Mini 10K. We couldn't be more proud to have Aliphine representing the US in the Tokyo Olympics this summer!

Aliphine Tuliamuk won the women's race after surging ahead at Mile 20 to win in 2:27:23 and head to her first Olympics. Molly Seidel, who had not run a marathon in her career but was an accomplished cross country and 10,000m star at Notre Dame, was the runner-up in 2:27:31. She will also head to her first Summer Games. Sally Kipyego returns to the Olympics as a mother for the first time. In 2012, she won an Olympic silver medal in the 10,000m while representing Kenya. We recap the races, break down the biggest surprises, why we overlooked the people who ended up on the team and where we go from here. Also, the Chonky Bois were out in full force. Erica Kirkwood was my Episode 43 guest. She qualified for the Olympic Trials when she broke 2 hours and 45 minutes at Grandma’s Marathon last summer. This past Saturday, Erica, and hundreds of other men and women from across the country, participated in the Olympic team trials for the marathon. Out of the runners who qualified and showed up in Atlanta to run the team trials, only three men and three women could make the team. The three women who made the team are Aliphine Tuliamuk, Molly Seidel, and Sally Kipyego.  Erica ran hard and tough. She crossed the finish line in under three hours, which is an impressive time in and of itself, but in this case, especially impressive. In this recap, Erica explains how tough the course was, the weather conditions that made running many times more difficult, how many women dropped out of the race, and how amazing it was to be part of such a historical race. As I explained in Episode 43, this is only the tenth time women have been allowed to run the marathon at the Olympics. Prior to the 1984 games, there was no women’s marathon as an Olympic event. The 2020 trials also saw more women qualify than ever before. Teachers, nurses, doctors, moms, and coaches from all over the country pushed themselves and others to be able to show up to that start line in Atlanta. Erica is one of those women: a mom and full-time occupational therapist. Here is Erica’s Olympic Trials race recap.   Show Notes:   Erica Kirkwood on Instagram Generation UCan Register for CASA of the Pines Superhero Run CASA of the Pines Superhero Run Info   Follow In A Skirt:   In A Skirt Website In A Skirt on Facebook In A Skirt on Instagram In A Skirt on Twitter

“When I'm dealing with pressure from racing and stuff, I just tell myself, 'This is an opportunity of a lifetime.' When I was growing up, or I started running, I never thought that I would be the person that I am today. I never thought that I would be living in America, that I would be an independent woman doing my own thing. I have an opportunity that not a lot of people have—like not even my role models when I was in Kenya, they don't have the opportunities that I have here. And so when I have that pressure, I just tell myself that I am in a better place and I don't want to complain because this is not going to last forever and so I try to just enjoy the process.” All she does is win, win, win, no matter what. Super excited to welcome nine-time U.S. national champion Aliphine Tuliamuk to the podcast. Tuliamuk went wire-to-wire to win the U.S. half-marathon championship in Pittsburgh on May 6 and followed that up less than a week later with her third-straight U.S. 25K title in Grand Rapids on May 12. The 29-year-old Tuliamuk, a native of Kenya who became a U.S. citizen in 2016, lives in Flagstaff, Arizona and trains with coach Ben Rosario's HOKA Northern Arizona Elite squad. She's a graduate of Wichita State University, where she was 14-time All-American and earned a degree in public health. “Without running, I would never have these opportunities,” Tuliamuk told me. “I have met some really, really incredible people in my life. And things have changed for me through running. It's just amazing and running has changed so much for me. I think I get that drive from there. The things I'm able to do for my family—to be able to help my siblings pay their tuition—and if I wasn't running, if I wasn't here in America, I wouldn't be able to do that. So I get that drive just because I am in a position where I can do things, and if I stop being self-motivated, then I'm not going to be able to do anything. And I feel like I still have so much in me. And people see me and they're like, “Wow, you're so accomplished.” But when I think about it, I just feel like I haven't done much. I feel like I haven't hit the jackpot that I need to. And so I still have to have self-drive in order to get to that point.” In this episode, we dive into Tuliamuk's story and what it was like to grow up in a small village in Kenya with 31 siblings. We also discuss her origins in running, her earliest recollections of racing and competition, and what led her to attend college in the U.S. Finally, we talk about what it was like assimilating to life in a new country, the differences she sees between Kenyan runners and American runners, why she's excited to train alongside Stephanie Bruce and Kellyn Taylor in the lead-up to the 2020 Olympic Trials Marathon, how she deals with pressure in competitive situations, the importance of national championship races to her as a new U.S. citizen, where she hopes to invest her time and energy when her running career is over, and much, much more. In this episode of Keep Moving Forward I interview 4x US National Cross Country Champion, Aliphine Tuliamuk.   “The goal of sports is to inspire the next generation.” Leaving behind a legacy that matters for those who need it. That is the philosophy of the Kenyan-born, US cross country champion, Aliphine Tuliamuk. She determined early in life that she would use her running gift not to simply get her to a college in the United States, but to help give back to the Kenyan community from which she came. Not only are more championships on her goal’s list, but so is Tokyo 2020, as is a deep desire to become a person upon whom her home country as well as the United States can rely on. Aliphine plans to use the education she is given for the benefit of those back home, intending to become a nurse, a doctor, or start her own non-profit, so that she may help her hometown community find reprieve from their daily struggles.   Aliphine’s story of relentlessly pursuing her passions for the benefit of those around her is inspiring, to say the least, and will cause you to self-reflect in a way that can only bring positive changes to your life. She champions her advice “life is not meant to be easy, it is meant to be hard” as she is someone who uses those difficulties to fuel her to move forward every day. I hope that you enjoy my discussion with Aliphine Tuliamuk.   To keep up with this inspiring woman and her training, you can follow her on Twitter and Instagram @AliphineTuliamuk and watch as she continues to win more running titles throughout the next year.   If you guys enjoy Keep Moving Forward and want to tell me so, I would love for you to leave me a review on iTunes.
