She's a Boston-based, Saucony sponsored athlete who ran for the University of Notre Dame where she earned All-conference honors in both cross country and track. Professional distance and marathon racer for Asics Savannah Berry shares how it all went down for her at the 2024 USATF National Championships, which just took place in New Haven, CT, on Sept. 2. Berry is having a stellar season this year, reaping the benefits of consistent, tough training, month after month, year after year. She's coming into her own on the national scene. It started in Feb. at the 2024 US Olympic Marathon Trials, where she placed an incredible 12th place, just seconds off of her PR. Berry followed that up with a 4th place finish in May at the Pittsburgh Half Marathon. This 20k Championships further emphasizes that Berry is now in a position to compete with the best. Becoming a competitive marathon runner wasn't something Berry necessarily had in mind after graduating from Utah Valley University in 2018. But encouragement from her boyfriend to go after qualifying for the 2020 Olympic Trials revealed a talent for the distance and Berry's never looked back. She's had an incredible progression ever since, learning and developing and gaining confidence all throughout the process. And, she's backed by a rock solid support crew, who she's quick to credit. Hear the whole story of how Savannah Berry is becoming a racer to watch on the national scene. How her day-to-day commitment and hard work, supported by a team that believes in her, came to fruition at this championship event. This episode is part of the WRS Race Report series. Each episode features a top 10 performer sharing her experience at one of the USATF Road Circuit series of races. And because a race is never just about what happens on race day, you will get to know a little bit more about each one of the runners featured and how this race figures into their larger running story. The USATF Running Circuit championship series of races happen throughout the US all year long. Each race serves as a national championship for the distance or the type of race being run. On February 3rd, 2:09 marathoner Elkanah Kibet rounded the corner with just a couple of minutes left on the course of the US Olympic Marathon Trials and a spectator shouted out: "You're going to Paris!!" He couldn't believe it, he had done it - Elkanah was going to become an Olympian. In the next moment, Elkanah was passed by another competitor (Lenny Korir) and just like that, the race was over. He was left in fourth place in an instant, an Olympic dream delayed. Elkanah wasn't tired at all - he made a micro mistake by slowing down and that was that.It takes a special person not to visibly be heartbroken at the loss of an Olympic Dream - especially at 40 years old. In this conversation, Elkanah shares that he will be back at the 2028 Trials to achieve his dream and the joy in his heart is palpable. We talk about kids, training, racing, and his tips to grab a sub three marathon! Of course we talk all about where he lives and trains in Colorado Springs - beautiful places to run, where he likes to dine out, races and more.Enjoy our conversation!Click HERE for the show notes. This episode is sponsored by:InsideTrackerInsideTracker is a personalized health and wellness platform like no other. What's their secret? On February 3rd, 2024, the United States held their Olympic Marathon Trials in Orlando, FL to determine the team they will be sending to the 2024 Summer Games in Paris, France. Once every four years the best in the country  race head-to-head where the top three men and top three women are chosen to represent the country at the Olympics. Not many countries select their team this way and it's got to be an absolute pressure cooker of an environment for athletes, but for fans of the sport it promises some of the highest quality athletics entertainment. Carolyn considers herself a fan of the sport but nowhere near the level of her older brother, Kevin Beatty, who accepted our third invitation to the show to break it all down with us. This topic of the US Olympic Marathon Trials is admittedly quite nerdy and likely only interesting to diehard fans. Luckily we had Kim asking excellent clarifying questions, preventing us from going too deep in the weeds, and even coming up with some very insightful takes of her own!In this episode we discussed:How to qualify for this raceWhy it's such a big dealWho the favourites were on both the men's and women's sidesHow each race played outNotable DNFsSurprise underdog performancesShakespearean tragedies that were tough to watch. We realized afterwards that beyond discussing the qualifying standards, there was virtually no mention of the athletes' finishing times, which speaks to the thrilling nature of championship style racing.Kevin's previous episodes on the podcast:Ep 3 | Treating Running Like a Sport Ep 78 | Pacer for Carolyn's Las Vegas 10k Win Resources discussed in the episode:Ep 104 | The Anatomy of a DNF Connect with Carolyn & Kim:Email us with guest ideas: inspiredsolescast@gmail.comInspired Soles InstagramKim's InstagramKim's FacebookCarolyn's InstagramCarolyn's FacebookWe love hearing from you! Today on the podcast is Conner Mantz!  Conner runs for NIKE and runs distances from the 1500m to Marathon. He is currently intently training for the 2024 US Olympic Marathon Trials, which will take place on February 3rd in Orlando, Flordia.  Previous to his professional running career, he competed for BYU, where he was a multiple-time NCAA Champion and debatably the greatest runner to ever come out of that program.  Conner holds PRs of 1:46.99 in the 800m, 3:36.29 in the 1500m, and 3:52.76 in the Mile.  In today's conversation, Conner and I discuss NCAA athletes running fast at altitude, his recent training, closing a workout in a 4:09 mile, being mentored by Jared Ward, his thoughts on the trials, and so much more! Anytime I get to sit down with Conner is a good time. I loved getting a look inside his process as he goes into one of the biggest races of his life.  Tap into the Conner Mantz Special.  You can listen wherever you find your podcasts by searching, "The Running Effect Podcast." When Tammy turned the final corner, the finish line clock read 2:36:50 and she kicked for home with everything she had left and crossed the line at 2:37:03. There were a few uncertain moments before friends showed Tammy her chip time and someone from the CIM team draped her with the coveted OTQ banner so she could celebrate her huge accomplishment. From the outside, Tim Tollefson appeared to have everything as a runner. He was a collegiate steeplechase champion, a 2-time US Olympic Marathon Trials qualifier, and is one of the country's most accomplished ultra runners. He podiumed at UTMB in both his 100K and 100 mile debuts, and went on to win the Javelina Jundred, Lavaredo Ultra Trail 120K, and the Ultra Trail Australia 100K. But appearances can be deceiving, and a focus on appearances can be devastating. Tim suffered from body dysmorphia and its accompanying OCD for two decades. As he relates in “What Goes Unsaid,”  a film project he participated in last year for World Mental Health Day, “I've spent a lifetime hating myself for what I'm not, instead of being thankful for what I am.”  Now, largely through his involvement with the running community, he's come to appreciate running for the gift that it is.   This episode is part of the Road to CIM podcast series, for runners participating in the race next weekend, there's extra advice for you! I, Lucie Beatrix, invite you to join me on an adventure that started with a spontaneous decision to leave the winter chill of New York City behind and start a fresh life in sunny Austin, Texas. This change wasn't just a shift in location, but a complete transformation of my life, my approach to physical fitness, and my perception of myself. From working behind the scenes at a photo shoot, to training with a competitive team, and eventually falling in love, this journey has been full of surprises. In this transformative phase of my life, I not only learnt how to be a girlfriend but also how to let go of the many identities I had accumulated over the years in the bustling city of New York. As I navigated the world of competitive running, my focus gradually shifted from qualifying for the 2024 US Olympic Marathon Trials to prioritizing my well-being over my physical appearance. I'll share how this new perspective led to breakthroughs in races and changed my relationship with food, sobriety, and my body. Reflect with me on the importance of flexibility, trust, and not setting too many expectations in life as we approach a new year filled with endless possibilities.
