"Everyone's so different... For me, it's just getting B+ training in and hopefully getting A+ results because I'm not burning out. I can be consistent and get brilliant training blocks in throughout the year without burnout or anything. And I think that's got me to this point. It's nothing crazy, it's nothing fancy, it's just simplicity. You think in your head for the longest time that you need to be doing ‘this, this, and this'. And actually, it's just taking a step back like, and enjoying running for what it is… Take away the goals, take away the times. Just enjoy running for the simplicity of it and the results will hopefully show.” Calli Thackery just ran the second-fastest marathon by a British woman in her marathon debut at the McKirdy Micro Marathon in New York. She crossed the finish line in 2 hours, 22 min and 11 seconds. Only Paula Radcliffe is ahead of her on the all-time list. She's also now No. 3 on the all-time European list behind Radcliffe and Sifan Hassan. With this performance, Calli puts herself in a strong position as a contender for British Athletics' Olympic marathon selection but there are still about eight months to go until things are set in stone.  This has been a breakout fall for her since she won The Big Half in London in September and then took seventh at the World Road Running Championships in Latvia earlier this month.  In this episode, you'll hear why she decided to bet on herself by pursuing professional running after working a full-time job, why working with her coach and fiancé Nick Hauger has worked so well and her hopes for the Olympic year ahead. She'll also share some stories about growing up in a running family since her father Carl was a professional runner for Nike and Team GB and medaled at the 1993 World Half Marathon Championships.  Host: Chris Chavez | @chris_j_chavez on Instagram Guest: Calli Thackery |  @callirianne on Instagram SUPPORT OUR SPONSORS

Thanks Tom for taking the time to share your thoughts and words about your journey with endurance and marathon running. Well done on the 1:10 London 'Big Half' half marathon and good luck with your quest of a sub 2:30 marathon at the delayed October London Marathon. We cover running, training, pacing, preparation and kit (especially shoes). Tom's a regular on the chiro table - he shares his views on chiro and how it's helped him over the years. He also shares his views on yoga and stretching - as someone who is fairly inflexible he opens up to me about his frustrations with yoga and how he found his thing. Finishing off with some insight into pro tennis from his summer job looking after the seeded tennis pro's at the Wimbledon Championships. Lastly a cool story about Bruce Springsteen. Enjoy.

We've got a listener question to tackle, round up some other results from the week, and then call our guest for the week, 28:32 10k man and 2010 commonwealth games representative, John Beattie.

Today’s guest is Samantha Harrison, who recently placed 2nd at the British Half Marathon Championships, @ The Official Big Half, achieving a 71 minute Half Marathon and has been selected for the World Half Marathon Championships where she will represent Great Britiain. Alongside her full-time job she is currently training at an elite level, normally twice daily and 7 days a week, taking a rest day once a fortnight maybe. Sam is incredibly busy, and bless her she found the time to have a conversation just 2 weeks after the Big Half, now because of the crazy schedule Sam lives by - we recorded this chat whilst she was in the bath - because when you work the number of hours Sam does, and train like she does - every second and every minute counts…. I must stress again - that Sam is just two years into her running career! It is absolutely insane - how well Samantha has done already, and it is so clear that Sam faces an incredible career ahead and I wish you all the very best in the World Half Marathon Championships, and for your future career! We confess there's a hint of deja vu in this week's edition of Anything but Footy as we give the latest updates and analysis on a number of stories that have dominated the headlines - and the podcast - in 2020.We start with the spread of coronavirus which is having a significant impact on world sport. Both the Tokyo 2020 organising committee and the International Paralympic Committee have met this week to discuss the potential impact on the Olympic and Paralympic Games later this year. With five months to go we discuss the implications.Should the Court of Arbitration of Sport hold their case reviewing Russia's suspension from top level sport in public to help with the need for more openness and transparency? That's certainly the view of independent body Global Athlete along with athletes groups from a number of major track and field nations including Great Britain and Northern Ireland.Nike has announced a number of new products following World Athletics' ruling over the legality of some of their new sports shoes. We are already seeing improvements from athletes wearing Nike shoes - notably this week Jemma Reekie who has broken a number of records.Mo Farah is out of The Big Half with injury and GB Basketball is out of contention for Tokyo 2020 after failing to qualify following their defeat by Spain. It's a hugely disappointing outcome for a sport which is aiming to become UK Sport funded moving forward. We also have the announcement from GB Boxing about the men and women who will be in Olympic qualifying action in March in London and news from British Athletics about the list of funded athletes for the Paralympic programme. Plus, we mark your card on which British sailors to look out for in the imminent World Championships. See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
