Episode 348 - Resilience and Running: Katherine Watson's Journey from Ballet to Trail Running

The FitMIND FitBODY Podcast

In this episode of the FitMIND FitBODY podcast, I chat with the energetic and inspiring Katherine Watson. Katherine shares her unique journey from growing up in England and moving to the remote town of Kununurra in Australia. Her story is full of adventure, starting from her early years exploring the red dirt landscapes of Western Australia. Katherine talks about her introduction to running and sports during her school years in Kununurra and later in Perth. She shares how her love for gymnastics and ballet transitioned into a passion for running. Katherine's journey wasn't easy, as she faced challenges like a severe spinal injury that changed her career path from dancing to joining the military as an air traffic controller. Despite these challenges, Katherine's determination to stay active led her to triathlons and eventually to running marathons. She shares her experience of running the City2Surf in Sydney and her eventual shift to trail running, which she found more engaging and enjoyable. Katherine emphasises the importance of community and finding joy in the journey, not just the destination. Tune in to hear Katherine's incredible journey, her insights on running, and her practical tips for beginners. Whether you're new to running or looking for inspiration, Katherine's story will motivate you to lace up your shoes and hit the trails. Katherine's website - https://www.positiveframepsychology.com/ Katherine's Running Tips: 1. Start Slow: Begin with a mix of walking and running. This helps build endurance gradually without overwhelming your body. 2. Enjoy the Process: Focus on the joy of running rather than setting strict goals. Enjoy the movement and the experience. 3. Listen to Your Body: Pay attention to how your body feels. If you need to slow down or walk, do so. 4. Don't Compare: Avoid comparing yourself to others. Everyone's running journey is unique. 5. Stay Motivated: Find what motivates you, whether it's setting small goals, exploring new routes, or running with friends and family. 6. Consistency is Key: Regular runs, even short ones, help build a habit and improve fitness over time. 7. Embrace the Community: Joining a running community can provide support and encouragement. 8. Adapt to Your Environment: Be flexible and adapt your running to different environments, whether it's trails or roads. 9. Recovery is Important: Take rest days and allow your body to recover, especially after long runs or races. 10. Celebrate Small Wins: Acknowledge and celebrate small achievements along your running journey. A couple of BIG favours: 1) please like and review this podcast so more people will discover it :) 2) come on the podcast and talk about your running journey and/or refer someone you'd love me to interview (whether you know them or not :) )  Lets not keep the power of running a secret any more!  Hit me up on Facebook/Instagram (FitMIND FitBODY) or send me an email - Michelle @ FitMINDFitBODY .co  Don't miss an episode of the FitMind FitBODY Podcast. After last week's top tier episode with all four of the boys, we bet you thought there was no way to top it. But we have done it - we have absolutely done it. Comedian and friend of the show Tom Witcombe joins us again for this week's episode, replacing wannabe comedian and anti-hero of the podcast Sen. Before we answer your questions with Tom, Rohit recaps the week by recounting his near-death experience involving wine, bikes and magpies - a tale so tall it should singlehandedly inspire a Royal Commission into the rules and regulations of the biking industry. We have a new game this week "Kushinator" - surprisingly inspired by the game that saved us from the bores of high school Akinator. In this game, there will be a person, place or thing that the boys will have to guess within 20 questions. As per usual, the tempers flare as the boys challenge and critique each other's contentious questions & answers - leaving us to wonder if the boys are really friends at all. Finally, saving the best until last, Tom Witcombe joins us for the fan favourite segment "#AskTCB". After we get some interesting updates from Tom on what he's been up to and what exciting things he has coming up, we delve into the questions you have sent in. We discuss all things cancelable - from primary schools to Adam Levine to carrying out mass genocide. Remember, you guys sent in these questions - not us. Also this week: Helmets, Kevin Spacey, Apu Nahasapeemapetilon, City2Surf and death row. Segments this week: The Logue: Tired of reaching around each other (at least on the podcast), the boys have instead decided to reach around the week's news stories, events and viral trends. Kushinator: The boys have 20 questions to guess the mystery person, place or thing. #AskTCB: We answer the questions you have sent in! Aidan Hobbs is a very capable and versatile runner that has been on the rise for a couple of years now. Running 15 of the last 28 consecutive City2Surf's dressed as Superman is maybe where the extra strength lies. Since running 44:36 and finishing 9th at the 2019 City2Surf, Aidan has gone on to run a personal best on the track from the 800mtrs to the 10000mtrs including the 3000mtr steeplechase and on the road from the 10k to the Marathon where he recently ran a superb 2:20 on the Gold Coast improving on the 2:23 ran there in 2019. Aidan decided, maybe lured by the prize purse and offerings, to back up and defend his title in the gruelling 30k Brisbane Trail Ultra the following weekend. Aidan was on track, pun intended, in defending his title before encountering a few traffic and direction issues that bled enough time to cost him the race where he finished in second place. At the age of 35, Aidan is in the middle of a BIG purple patch that is probably better referred to as an "acreage" than a patch. Aidan, with the support of his wife Peta, will proceed to juggle the responsibilities of full time work and three young children to continue his upwards trajectory on the performance graph that will allow him to better his personal bests over the distances. With his commitment to hard work, professionalism and being surrounded by a great team, all is possible! Best of luck Aidan.   Greatly appreciate your support for the podcast on Patreon -www.patreon.com/therunningguypodcast   The Running Guy Podcast Singlet -www.therunningguypodcastsinglet   The Running Guy Coaching Website - therunningguy.com.au   Instagram - Instagram.com/therunningguypodcast   Facebook - therunningguypodcast   Join The Running Guy Podcast Strava Club -  therunningguypodcast   YouTube Channel youtube.com/channel/UCAvM0q11KzHkLBoL0LX_9lw   Opening music - Artist: Soundroll Song: Lost in Love Closing music -  Artist: Dan Henig Song: Wood   DanHenig.com   Hey guy's if you are enjoying listening to the show and would like to make a small donation of support then follow this PayPal link https://paypal.me/astonduncan?locale.x=en_AU

In this episode of the Single Mother Survival Guide Podcast, Julia talks with Leanne Mulcahy. Leanne found herself unexpectedly pregnant at 18 and when her relationship didn’t work out, she became a single mum when her daughter was 6 months old. She has since created an amazing life for herself. She is an award-winning designer and Founder of Stand Out Women, which is a global community for women who are ready to live life on their own terms. She’s also a speaker and an author. Her first book Notes to Self was released in 2015 and was a hit with women who connected with her story of overcoming severe shyness and lack of self-worth to have a business where she helps women have the life they really want. An updated version of this book - Imperfectly Perfect - has since been released. Leanne also works with women to design a clear vision and plan that helps them overcome mindset blocks that keep them stuck, boost their confidence so they can stop worrying and doubting themselves and feel good about taking deliberate and inspired action. Her online radio show, Stand Out Radio, is where women from around the world share inspirational stories, wisdom and answer the burning question "what does it mean to live life on your own terms". In this episode of the Single Mother Survival Guide Podcast, Leanne tells us about her own journey of becoming a single mum, and what it was like being such a young single mum and how she coped. She also discusses the benefits she encountered in being a single mum, and what it has taught her daughter. She also shares what life looks like for her today, her advice for single mums, and what she’s learnt through her experience of being a single mum.
