Biya Simbassa took many American track and field fans by surprise on Sunday morning when they awoke to results from the Valencia Marathon and saw that the 31-year-old notched a personal best by nearly four minutes to run 2:06:53. The performance was good for 17th place in the race but moved him to No. 4 on the U.S. all-time list. Only Khalid Khannouchi (2:05:38), Galen Rupp (2:06:07) and Ryan Hall (2:06:17) have run faster. Back in 2022, we paid a visit to Flagstaff, Ariz. for a video featuring Simbassa and also recorded a podcast episode detailing his career path from being born in Ethiopia, moving to the United States in 2007 and then going through the school system. He started running in high school in Minnesota and then continued his development at Iowa Central Community College before transferring to Oklahoma. After graduating, he was coached by Scott Simmons in Colorado Springs before signing a pro contract with Under Armour to be part of the Dark Sky Distance Project with coach Stephen Haas. In 2023, Simbassa started working with Hall as his coach. The partnership lasted until this summer before Hall decided to step back from coaching. Simbassa worked with Ian Carter (a McKirdy Trained coach, who also was coached by Hall) for the Valencia Marathon build-up. CITIUS MAG spoke with Simbassa on Thursday afternoon to get details on how the performance came about. “After the (2012) Olympics, it just was such a big boost because for so long you're scrapping and fighting. I was 5th, 6th, 7th in a lot of these races and I kept saying, ‘This is going to be the year I'm going to get over the hump.' For it to finally happen was just such a big moment for me, for my own confidence. After that I knew that I belonged and could really compete with all these guys.” 2x Olympic medalist and 12x U.S. champion Galen Rupp joins us live in Eugene to catch us up on life since the Olympic Marathon Trials in February. Galen reflects on his favorite races from his career, his experience competing for the University of Oregon, what his training was like during the peak of his career, the support he's received from his wife and family, how he stays looped into the running community, and what it's been like recovering from surgery a few months ago. Hayward Field. Pre's Trail. The birthplace of Nike. From Bill Dellinger to Galen Rupp. And Andrew Wheating to Matthew Centrowitz. The men of the University of Oregon have a rich tradition, perhaps greater than any other team in the country. Current mid-distance star Elliott Cook is a fitting torch bearer for the Duck legacy. Originally from Dublin, Ohio, Elliott moved to the Pacific Northwest for school, and has punctuated his career so far with recent Pac 12 championships in the 800 and 1500 meters. He'll chase Oregon immortality this week at the NCAA Championships. And he'll do so on his home track with joy, a thoughtful approach, and immense reverence for his storied program. Elliott is our third guest in our series chronicling the journeys of local stars on their way to the upcoming Eugene Olympic Trials. Questions, comments, or show ideas? In this episode Steve takes a deep dive into the 10,000m track event in our series on trying to make Michael into a track & field fan in anticipation of the 2024 Olympics in Paris. For the notes Steve created to help introduce Michael to the event, please see below. Please note that we while we didn't go into the women's 10K nearly enough, we'll continue to bring out the important storylines over the coming months to ensure Michael has as much intel on the women's events as the men's. The 10,000m Episode NotesRelevance. It's more likely that you have experience running/racing the 10K than the 800m. Also, you understand the energy needs for this event more than the 800m. The TEN. One of the biggest 10Ks of the year was run this weekend. Sound Running put on the their yearly 10K on So Cal in perfect conditions where athletes were trying to get their Olympic standards. This provides an excellent opportunity for you to watch the race before we talk & have it top of mind. Here is a link to the video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VdnO--7pbP4You won't know many/any? of the names before watching this video & I won't be surprised if you want to fast forward to the final 5 min or so. If you do fast forward, I recommend you jump to 17 min (18:17 on the video). One argument for listening all the way through is you can get a chance to be exposed some of the lingo & energy. How To Qualify for the Olympics. This will give us a chance to go over the rather confusing & complicated process for getting on the starting line of the 10K in Paris. Another important 10K happened over the weekend in Spain where two of the favorites for the 10K gold medal ran on the roads. You can see that HERE of you are interested. Today on the podcast is Ryan "Plop" Johnson! Ryan graduated from The United States Air Force Academy last spring. Ryan currently serves as a 2nd Lieutenant in The United States Air Force in Colorado Springs. During his years at the academy, Ryan contributed greatly to the program both through his leadership and performances, leading them to top finishes at the NCAA meets. Most notably, in 2022, Ryan was an NCAA XC All-American, placing 28th. Ryan holds PRs of 8:00 (3k), 13:45 (5k), 28:20 (10k), and recently ran 62:31 at the 2024 Houston Half-Marathon where he beat Galen Rupp. In today's conversation, Ryan takes me through life as a 2nd Lieutenant, the balance of working and training, his years at the academy, the culture of AFXC, his future ambitions in the sport, why he runs, and so much more! I loved this one. Ryan was super open about his journey and what goes into his life, making today's conversation super intriguing and inspiring. I hope you all enjoy it as much as we did having it! His name is Paul Mackinnon, and he's known for working with athletes like Galen Rupp and many BTC athletes. For some background on Paul, he lived a sporting life as a semi-professional hockey player for 15 years, playing in Australia and Europe, allowing him access to high-performance programs, athletes, and coaches around the world. Since retiring, he has developed The Balanced Runner coaching business to help athletes. The philosophy was developed largely by Lex Anderson in Canberra and further refined by Paul over close to a decade of practicing as a professional running technique coach. In today's episode, we go through Paul's work and answer some of the most commonly asked questions in regard to running form and biomechanics. The Olympic Marathon Trials are complete and what a day it was! W are kicking off the next 2-3 weeks of Trials coverage with an amazing person and story. Josh Kalapos was the last seed at the Trials with a quallifying time of 2:18:00. He qualified for the race without a second to space. Then Josh did the improbable - he finished 17th (only one spot behind returning champ Galen Rupp). Not only that, this former DIII runner called his shot, telling the D3 Glory Days podcast two weeks before the race that he'd being going out with the leaders in an effort to make the podium. In this episode we hear Josh detail this amazing story and hear his views on elevating unheralded college runners and being one of the few Asian-American runners in the field. Heading into the 2024 Olympic Marathon Trials, the consensus was that there was no consensus: Anyone could make the team. And the races delivered big time, with topsy-turvy place changes and unexpected finishes on both the men's and women's side. In the men's race, Conner Mantz and Clayton Young, the top two seeds in the field, did come away with the top two places, but the surprising news was who wasn't in the mix, as two sub-2:09 seeds – Scott Fauble and Sam Chelanga – dropped out and reigning champion Galen Rupp struggled to a 16th-place finish. Before Clayton Young's 2:08:00 breakthrough in Chicago last fall, the ASICS runner's marathon career had gotten off to a fairly rocky start. Young debuted in Atlanta in 2020 but only managed a 2:29:46 for 136th place, and in his first Chicago the following year, he was on track for a top-10 finish before falling only 300 meters from the finish line and losing 3 minutes and 5 places. Along the way, he'd picked up a few wins at shorter road races including a pair of national titles in 2023, but it wasn't until last fall when he entered the conversation of potential Olympic contenders. Young, who trains with Mantz in Utah, had a smoother buildup than his training partner (who dealt with a stress reaction in November) and seemed to be the most in control of all the leaders at each point in the race. He's gotta get bonus points for sportsmanship as well, offering his training partner a pull from his water bottle after Mantz missed one of his own and hyping up the crowd even as he got passed in the final few strides. Just a few hours after the conclusion of the elite races, Des and Kara jumped on the mics to recap all of the action at the TCS NYC Marathon on Sunday. To call this episode "pure fire" would be a gross understatement AND STILL perhaps the best possible teaser words for it. They spend the most time on the women's race, one that Kara calls "the best race of the year," breaking down the cat-and-mouse games that extended well into the race. This includes their perspectives on the strategies of Kellyn Taylor and Molly Huddle to take the lead at various points, knowing full well that Obiri and Gidey were going to stay patient until a final, blazing-fast push to the finish. As a bonus, you get some early predictions for the women's marathon in Paris. Then, they cover the men's race too, but not before hearing about Des's death-defying trip to the marathon start line in Staten Island, where she and counterpart-on-the-lead-motos Galen Rupp, were the very last to cross the bridge before it closed. Des was in rare form on this episode - fresh off the marathon broadcast, still jet-lagged from Japan, hopped-up on champagne, beer, and coffee, and oh so ready to stoke any available fire. Kara just can't seem to contain her... or walk away. You have to stay all the way to the end for the biggest conflagration (and genuinely not a bad sponsorship idea for the US Marathon Trials). Enjoy!
The NCAA cross country action heated up with NCAA phenoms Parker Valby and Katelyn Tuohy squaring off at the Wisconsin Nuttycombe Invite and Valby crushing Tuohy for the course record in poor conditions. In this episode, Connor recaps the craziest race of his career, where he played rock-paper-scissors mid-race, Simeon talks through his hamstring strain, and they both go through their recent training and workouts. ABOUT THE CALL ROOM: Introducing The Call Room With Connor Burns & Simeon Birnbaum. The Running Effect will document their season in-depth this outdoor track season. Each week, Connor and Simeon will pull back the curtain and show you how they train physically and mentally and handle failure, adversity, and the ups and downs that ensue this season. Connor Burns ran 3:58.83 in the mile last June, becoming the first high schooler from Missouri to break the four-minute barrier. He is also a reigning national champion in the 3200m and became the fifth-ever high schooler to break four minutes in the mile indoors by running 3:59.11. Most recently, Connor became a national champion indoors in the 2-mile by running 8:43.24. Connor has committed to run for The University of Oregon this fall. Simeon Birnbaum is the first sixteen-year-old in America to break four minutes in the mile. He did this by running a 3:59.51 while winning a national title in that same race. Simeon also holds a personal best of 1:50.12 in the 800m. Simeon holds the South Dakota state records in the 3200m, 1600m, and 800m. Simeon has committed to run for The University of Oregon this fall. This season Connor and Simeon are chasing history; we are here to document it in a historic and unprecedented fashion. Over the coming months, Connor and Simeon will dive deep into their outdoor campaign leading into big invitationals, state championships, national record attempts, and national meets. We will go into their training, racing, mindset, and answer your questions along the way! You can listen wherever you find your podcasts by searching, "The Running Effect Podcast." Many people want to be good at something. Very few put in the work to be good. My guest today on the podcast Wes Shipsey is someone who puts in hours of work each day in order to reach his potential. In his words, “You get out what you put in.” That's the reason behind his 80-mile weeks and absurd workouts like 20x400 in an average of 61 seconds. Wes also ran his state meet with a fever of 103 degrees. I looked up the definition of dedicated and a picture of Wes came up. Not only is Wes fast, but very well-spoken. I was very impressed with his in-depth responses to my questions and insight into his career so far. Less than 24 hours ago, Lex Young, a junior in high school, ran the second-fastest 5k ever by a US high schooler. Lex ran 13:43.95 putting him #2 all-time right behind the legend Galen Rupp. He did this at Sound Running's "Track Meet". I thought it'd be a cool idea to get his immediate thoughts post-race and got him back on the podcast! We do a deep dive into the race last night. From his intentions going into the race to mentally willing himself forward when the lactic hit to his post-race stomach struggles. This fifteen-minute recap of this historic race is well worth listening to! If you want to help us out please like, subscribe, and share. You can also give us a five-star review on Spotify! This week's guest is Nico Montañez of Mammoth Track Club. Nico is an accomplished marathoner and road racer who's had a fantastic couple of months, beginning with running 2:13 for 7th place at the Chicago Marathon, continuing with a top-3 finish at the U.S. Half Marathon Championships, and culminating most recently with his first national title at the U.S. 15K champs in Jacksonville, Florida last weekend. Nico shared his unique story that began in Tuscon, Arizona, went from junior college to BYU, and landed at Mammoth Track Club under Deena and Andrew Kastor. Nico talked about how his sports psychology work has paid off in results, how his Boston buildup is going, and shared a lot about his time at BYU. We also covered bad tattoos, being mistaken for Galen Rupp, and slip-n-slides. Enjoy the episode, don't forget to subscribe, rate, and review this and all the Citius Mag podcasts, and until next time, this has been Run Your Mouth. On finding his place on the elite road circuit: “I used to go into races with ‘something to prove' and I realized that, for me, it was a big insecurity issue [….] now I go into races believing what I know I can be. And that I can allow everyone else to shine with me.” On preparing for Boston 2022: “The goal is to perform at my best level, whatever that looks like. I want to look myself in the mirror that night and say I gave it my all. But I'm fierce, I'm competitive, and sometimes that takes over the driver's seat… so part of the goal is to be really competitive up front.” On running at BYU: “It was a big mental shift, but more than anything it was raising my standards. Seeing what people were actually doing behind the fast times at the university… I was like, ‘I have to raise the standards' – not just for the running, but for who I want to be as a person.”

In this episode, Candace talks with guest Tony about the medical news that he and his partner received, himself requiring an open heart surgery, and his partner getting diagnosed with Early Onset Alzheimer's. He talks about making a counter-intuitive decision that went against what some research would suggest for patients with Early Onset Alzhemizers; instead, they retired, sold their home and became nomads running marathons and half marathons all around the world. Tony talks about what it was like to travel around the world running race after race in places like Madagascar, Bhutan and the Great Wall of China with nothing but a suitcase. The pandemic did not put a stop to their plan and they are still running around the world over 7 years later.Anthony L. Copeland-Parker was a professional pilot/manager for thirty-seven years, the last twenty-seven with United Parcel Service. His last job had him managing pilots and flying B757/767-type air-craft all over the world. When he retired, he began writing his blog, PlayHard-HaveFun.com. Since then, he and his partner Catherine have traveled to eighty-two different countries. They have run at least a half-marathon in thirty-five countries and on all seven continents. His book Running All over the World, adapted from a blog he wrote during their travels, is a nonfiction account of our five-plus years of flying, running, walking, sailing, and sightseeing from Atlanta to Antarctica and back again. Part travelogue and part medical memoir, it transports listeners to exotic places like Madagascar, Bhutan, and the Great Wall of China while at the same time offering a day-to-day look at what it means to have nothing but what's in your suitcase. It's also an offbeat love story, recounting the trials and tribulations of an ex-pilot with a passion for vistas and logistics and a woman so tough she walks a half-marathon in the Australian Outback mere weeks after breaking her ankle. During their years as nomads, they pushed their physical and mental limitations as often as they could - and finished every race hand in hand.Get a copy of Tony's book hereFollow Tony on FacebookFollow Tony on IGFollow Tony on TwitterFind Tony on Linkedin
