True Believer: The Unsolved Murder of Elizabeth Mackintosh

The main True Believer project is finished, at least until there are any updates on the Elizabeth Mackintosh murder investigation. But we do want to return with a postscript that addresses a different question: What happened to other people who were students at Covenant Seminary in 1990?Many students and professors went on to respected careers in the ministry. One of them was a man named Ian, who in 2023 was deemed unfit to lead his church after a sexual misconduct allegation was made public by The Tennessean newspaper, as reported by friend of the podcast Liam Adams. Ian has denied allegations against him.But there's a lot more to the story. The case against him helped us understand how a denomination with so many good, kind people can apparently fumble complaints against their peers. Many cases are, essentially, secret. And there's a cascading effect to that secrecy: If complaints are never heard, and witnesses are never asked, and questions are never answered, abuse remains covered up.Until someone decides to go public.Visit www.truebelieverpodcast.com to see additional materials related to each episode or to get in touch with us.

Liam Adams is running the marathon in Paris this weekend! We spoke while he was training in Flagstaff, Arizona, surviving dodgy motel accommodation and encounters with wild animals. We talk about his rocky road to Australian team selection, what training has looked like recently, his goals for Paris, and the challenges of being unsponsored while running at the highest level.  Liam is an Australian marathoner who famously works full-time as a sparky (sparky is slang for electrician for our international listeners). Liam ran his PB of 2:08:39 on the Gold Coast in 2023, which was the fastest time run by an Aussie in Australia, and Liam is confident there's more in the tank.  Liam is already a 2x Olympian, having represented Australia in the marathon at the Rio Olympics in 2016 and placing 24th at the Tokyo Olympics. He's also competed at the Commonwealth Games and the World Athletics Cross-Country Championships. Paris will be his third Games. -- Follow Run With It on Instagram @runwithit.pod Intro and outro music by Dan Beacom Graphic design by Kate Scheer

These partnerships strive to connect the people of Nashville to the people of the world. And they follow a nationwide mission established in the 1950s to carry out what's known as “citizen diplomacy,” under the belief that exchanging cultural ideas builds understanding and fosters international peace. Now, after many years of effort, the newest sister city relationship could soon be formalized. Nashville will partner with Erbil, the capital of the Kurdistan Region of Iraq. First up today, we hear the latest from the Southern Baptist Convention with Tennessean religion reporter Liam Adams. This episode was produced by Tony Gonzalez. Liam Adams continues to perform at the highest level and race out of his skin when competing for Australia at the major championships, with one of the most courageous and ballsy efforts we've ever witnessed when attacking early off the front over at the Birmingham Commonwealth Games. Liam had learnt from previous race experiences against the East Africans, that allowing them to control the race with a fartlek type style of racing, would only lessen his chances of a good result. Liam was confident that settling into an early fast rhythm that was sustainable for the distance, would set himself up for his best performance on the day and throw a cat among the pigeons for the Africans. Liam gritted it out like he always does and was closing in on the runner in third spot with the gap to the bronze medal narrowing with every stride as they neared the finish line but unfortunately ran out of real estate and finished seven seconds behind in fourth. Liam is already thinking about the road to Paris in two years times that would see him pull on the marathon green and gold singlet for his third consecutive Olympic Games to match his Comm Games record. Liam is one of the most successful runners and athletes Australia has had, and will no doubt comfortably break the 2:10 barrier in the months to come to make his spot on the Australian Olympic Team non-discretionary! Liam Adams passage to his first Olympics in Rio 2016 was certainly filled with lots of barriers that he just managed to hurdle on the very last day of the qualification period. To say the Tokyo 2020 qualification was a lot easier would be far from accurate, when Liam's first attempt of running the 2:11:30 required time on the Gold Coast in 2019 fell short by just 6 seconds. Having the disappointment of the 2016 Lake Biwa DNF result in his mind when his hamstring failed, Liam was determined to make sure he did what ever was needed to make this one count and secure his spot on the Australian Team. With the COVID pandemic just starting to shut down the globe and cause the cancellation of travelling and racing, Liam wasn't fully aware at the time of how huge it was when he crossed the line running a 2:10:48 and earning himself the number one spot on the Australian team and running the fastest marathon by an Aussie in 13 years. Liam is as gritty as they come and I'm extremely excited to see how his 2nd Olympic Marathon unfolds along with the other 5 members of the team. After successfully navigating the highways and byways of continental Europe, a tanned but not so fit Sean Whipp re-joins the Down the Track team for Episode 22. Joining Sean and Tim in the DTT hot seat is Hamish Beaumont – a man who needs no introduction. The episode kicks off with Sean enlightening us on his European tour as an athlete manager, culminating in Catriona Bisset’s record breaking 800m performance at the London Diamond League. Sean also reflects on the World University Games in Naples before moving on to an in depth analysis of the Australian performances in London. XCR’19 moved to balmy Ballarat in the depths of winter, where unseasonal conditions provided a great opportunity for runners to post fast 15km & 6km times around the Lake Wendouree circuit. DTT caught up with race winners Kiah Fry and Andrew Buchanan to discuss their runs. And as we move to the latter stages of XCR’19, Hamish delivers an honest assessment of the various Premiership and relegation battles across the divisions. Athletics Victoria CEO Glenn Turnor also provides some comment and thoughts on the XCR series by way of an interview recorded immediately after the Lake Wendouree race. Lisa Weightman lit up the Australian running scene in Sydney last weekend by running a World Record for an 40 year old over the classic 10km road race distance. Lisa’s time of 31:55 was a PB for the three time Olympian who is looking toward Tokyo to join a very elite group of four time Olympians in athletics. We hear from Lisa about her run and the next phase of her preparation. Joining Lisa as a World Record breaker, Steve Moneghetti ran a big race on his home circuit to take the World 55 to 59 record for the 15km. Mona joins DTT for a quick chat about the Lake Wendouree event. In another feature interview we catch up with Sam Rizzo, the Ballarat based wheelie who under the guidance of Richard Colman has his sights set firmly on the Tokyo 2020 Paralympics. We round out the feature interviews by catching up with Nick Earl at the Tasmanian Cross Country Championships at Pontville. Nick agonizes over being beaten by someone half his age and having heckling directed at him from across Bass Strait by Hamish Beaumont. In the Hot Topics Sean, Tim and Hamish tackle the issues around Shayna Jack and the current crisis Swimming Australia now face, while the Caster Semenya case continues to attract headlines, this time due to the fact she will not be competing in the upcoming World Championships. Rod talks about travelling with Dick Quax and John Walker, training together and targeting goal races and working on them together while with along John and also how the coaching structure in New Zealand worked at the time before going into the origin of bathtub beers, getting accommodation close to training and that infamous quote as well as how to manage yourself through the hectic race schedule of the elite racing circuit in Europe. The first half of this epic interview is rounded out with Rod’s experience of the 1972 Munich Olympics where he won the Bronze medal and broke the 4-minute mile on the way, then recounting the evacuation during the ‘Black September’ hostage situation before the heats took place and being next to the Israeli camp and the aftermath from the event.   Patreon Link: https://www.patreon.com/insiderunningpodcast Opening and Closing Music is Undercover of my Skin by Benny Walker. www.bennywalkermusic.com For shoes or running apparel contact Julian at: https://www.facebook.com/therunningcompanyballarat/ Join the conversation at: https://www.facebook.com/insiderunningpodcast/ To donate and show your support for the show: https://www.paypal.com/cgi-bin/webscr?cmd=_s-xclick&hosted_button_id=9K9WQCZNA2KAN
