The acclaimed painting Let My People Go by Aaron Douglas uses vibrant colors of lavender, green, and gold, along with traditional African imagery, to tell the biblical story of Moses and connect it with Black Americans’ struggle for freedom and justice. The painting portrays God’s appearance to Moses in a burning bush when he revealed that He’d seen the plight of the Israelites in Egypt. The artist uses a beam of light to symbolize God and His message, “So now, go. I am sending you to Pharaoh to bring my people the Israelites out of Egypt” (Exodus 3:10). In Let My People Go, Moses kneels in obedient submission to God’s instructions, but the eye is drawn to the dark waves and horses trained for war surrounding him—reminding viewers of the struggles the Israelites would face as they left Egypt. But the beam of light shines brightly as a reminder that God would be with the Israelites in their struggle. The emotions evoked by the painting resonate because the struggle against injustice continues; many use their power to oppress men, women, and children around the world. As those suffering cry out for God to be “a refuge for the oppressed, a stronghold in times of trouble” (Psalm 9:9), we can plead with God to respond to their cries for help. And, like Moses, we can be willing to act on behalf of the oppressed. How might you pray for oppressed people? How might you learn more about caring for those suffering injustice?

Hank Willis Thomas talks to Ben Luke about his influences—from writers to musicians and, of course, other artists—and the cultural experiences that have shaped his life and work. Thomas, born in 1976 in Plainfield, New Jersey, is a conceptual artist whose works in various media address identity, collectivity and subjectivity, particularly in relation to race, and how these subjects shape—and are shaped by—broad phenomena, from sports, advertising and brands to art history. Thomas trained as a photographer and a search for a singular powerful image underpins much of his work. But however impactful it might be at first sight, that instant appeal is always a gateway to greater cultural and historical complexity. He discusses his latest exhibition, Kinship of the Soul and its fusion of the paintings of Romare Bearden, Aaron Douglas and Henri Matisse, the early influence of Roy DeCarava's photographs, the importance of the Gee's Bend quilters, the writing of Audre Lorde and James Baldwin, and his surprising response to the Dukes of Hazzard television show. Plus, he answers our usual questions, including the ultimate: what is art for?Hank Willis Thomas: Kinship of the Soul, Pace, London, unil 21 December; Irving Penn: Kinship, Curated by Hank Willis Thomas, Pace, New York, until 21 December. The words the “Harlem Renaissance” have immense magnetism for vast numbers of people. In art history, however, the Harlem Renaissance has often been treated as a footnote to the main story of 20th century art. It's often been given scant attention in textbooks, and even U.S. museums have historically given more attention to European movements of the 1920s, such as French Surrealism and Russian Constructivism, than to what was happening with Black artists in their own cities. A new exhibition at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, called “The Harlem Renaissance and Transatlantic Modernism,” is out to correct the record. Curated by Denise Murrell, it places the explosion of creativity and experimentation by Black artists from the '20s to the '40s at the center of international art conversation in those years. The 160 works on view range from figures like Aaron Douglas and Jacob Lawrence, whose works have long been celebrated, to a host of less familiar names whose stories are not widely known. There's so much to say about it. To get some perspective on what makes this show such a big deal, art critic Ben Davis spoke to Bridget Cooks. Cooks teaches art history and African American studies at the University of California, Irvine, and is the author of Exhibiting Blackness, an important 2011 book about the history of U.S. museums's relationship to Black artists. Cooks also happens to be one of a star group of experts who was on the Advisory Committee for this Met show. With “The Harlem Renaissance and Transatlantic Modernism” drawing major attention, they talked about both the history of the Harlem Renaissance itself and the history how museums have treated the subject in the past.

What do you get when two old Battlestar Galactia alumni get together to make a comic book. Turns out, not at all what you might expect. I got a chance to catch up with Mark Verheiden and Aaron Douglas to hear all about their new Dark Horse Comics project, Borealis. I was initially drawn to it from the native and supernatural elements alone but this is a big story with lots of overlapping narratives. Pulling in the talented team of Cliff Richards to handle the art duties and colored deftly by Guy Major (both of which have names one might find in credits from Airwolf or something,) this is a book that comes off as surprisingly urban given its very remote setting in rural Alaska. I honestly have no idea how they are going to wrap the initial arc up in three issues but I'm sticking around to find out. Issue 2 is out in stores next week. Learn more about your ad choices. In this episode, Eric sits down with artist, curator and professor; Jamaal Sheats. They discuss his background — growing up in Nashville, Tennessee, his interest in the arts, his educational background, attending Fisk University and ultimately ending up at Fisk University as a faculty member! Sheats sheds light on how at first he ‘ran' from the arts — wanting to be a business major, an entrepreneur but how he ultimately pursued his artistic passions and the role his parents played in encouraging him on his artistic path. They discuss the mentors he had that were instrumental in his life, the technique of repoussé, training and developing as an artist. The artists that helped inform his work and how he pays homage to his lineage and ancestors through it. They discuss his involvement at  the prestigious institution of Fisk University — a historically black university, the art department that was established by Aaron Douglas, the impressive long list of alumni and its mission to educate and inspire the next generation of art leaders and advocates. The extensive collections held by Fisk, his role as an art professor, the programs and exhibitions that Sheats has curated throughout the years and his exciting plans for the future. For more visit: www.ericsperspective.comGuest Bio:  Jamaal B. Sheats, MFA is Director and Curator of the Fisk University Galleries and an Assistant Professor in the Fisk University Art Department. An alumni of Fisk, both positions enable Sheats to work with students, faculty and the community in ways that integrate his expertise and passion for the arts, education, and mentorship. As a member of the Art Department he has taught Sculpture, Arts and Ideas, Drawing, and Independent Study courses for students with an interest in sub-specialties. In his director and curatorial appointment with the Fisk University Galleries, he successfully integrated the Arts into all academic disciplines and increased engagement with the Middle Tennessee community through novel and innovative approaches. Sheats' implementation of multi- and inter- disciplinary programs, such as the Fisk University STEAM (Science Technology, Engineering, Arts and Mathematics) Series, Babies in the Gallery (BIG), Visiting Lecturer Series, and Gallery Ambassador Program for Fisk students and community members, are outcomes of this goal. During Sheats' 3-year tenure as Director and Curator of the Fisk University Galleries, he has also curated 15  art exhibitions; welcomed over 16,000 visitors from across the globe; created the Fisk University Galleries Fellowship for post-doctoral scholars; and built a continuous pipeline of charitable giving from the annual Friends of the Gallery Campaign that he instituted in 2016. In 2017 Sheats' led efforts to secure funding from the Ford Foundation and Walton Family Foundation to establish the Fisk University Museum Leadership Program, which is a 2-year certificate program that aims to diversify art museum leadership. Within the arts community Sheats is a well-known and respected artist who has maintained a strong and consistent domestic and international exhibition record for nearly two decades. Jamaal B. Sheats, MFA obtained his Bachelor of Arts degree in Art from Fisk University and a Master of Fine Arts degree with a concentration in Studio Art from the School of the Museum of Fine Art (SMFA)-Boston and Tufts University. This episode covers the Harlem Renaissance.  Harlem was once inhabited by Native Americans and was mainly farmland. Over time it evolved to what we know today.  I do not want to spoil all of the terrific information that Jeananne goes into, but to whet your appetite, you can look forward to learning about Strivers Row, The Apollo Theater, Langston Hughes, Aaron Douglas, WEB Dubois, Alain Locke, and Marcus Garvey to name just a few headliners in this podcast.    There is always more to learn, talk to you all soon! -Jimmy & Jean

Murals have become an iconic part of Nashville's visual identity, especially on social media (Taylor Swift's famous wings photo, anyone?). Muralists have been working in Nashville for decades, including Aaron Douglas' work at the Fisk Galleries and several longtime muralists, graffiti artists and commercial painters. However, murals and street art have exploded in recent years due to major beautification efforts like the Nashville Walls Project, as well as the increasing popularity of Instagram-friendly photo ops. In this episode we're joined by a panel of artists to learn more about the history of murals in Nashville, how things have changed in recent years, and what that means for the future of street art in Nashville. But first, WPLN Morning Producer Alexis Marshall tells us all about her story on a new shared restaurant space in East Nashville. Guests: Alexis Marshall, WPLN morning producer Lakesha Moore, Fisk Galleries coordinator and artist Brian Greif, artist and co-founder of the Nashville Walls Project Michael Cooper, owner of Murals and More Ghosty Lowks, graffiti and airbrush artist
