UFOs, mysterious red lights in Oregon skies and perplexed pilots

On the evening of Saturday, Dec. 7, a series of curious and unusual red lights illuminated the Oregon night sky. They moved around dramatically, zooming up and down at speeds so extreme, so uncharacteristic, nearby pilots were left in awe as they watched it all unfold from 30,000 feet. “I don't even know how to describe it,” one pilot said. “It's pretty crazy,” added another. In the middle of the mystery, an air traffic controller gave permission for the pilots to “maneuver as necessary left and right to avoid the UFO out there.” Some have suggested that the lights were merely Starlink satellites, which are routinely spotted as they orbit the planet. But others aren't so sure. Some believe those weird red lights that dazzled the night sky are part of a curious trend of uncanny events. Some believe there's more to the story. On the latest episode of Beat Check, Lizzy Acker, who covers Oregon weather and writes the advice column Why Tho? for The Oregonian/OregonLive, shares details of the recent curiosities in our friendly skies. Laura Hill was about 30 years old when she helped create one of Portland's most-iconic designs. When the Port of Portland was redesigning Portland International Airport in 1986, architecture and design firm SRG Partnership led the project. Hill retired from the firm in 2008, but at the time she was a principal interior designer for SRG. In this bonus episode of Beat Check with The Oregonian, reporter Lizzy Acker shares her interview with Hill. Hill explains how the famous design came to be, the research SRG did at other airports and what other designs were pitched. Here's their conversation. Learn more about your ad choices. A couple of weeks ago, West Linn voted in their youngest elected mayor ever: 23-year-old Rory Bialostosky. As Gen Z begins to take office, older generations are taking notice. Today on City Cast Portland, we're sharing a conversation we aired earlier this year between our own Gen Z audio producer, Giulia Fiaoni, and two elder millennials: our host Claudia Meza and Oregonian reporter Lizzy Acker.  Links from today's show: Apparently, Portland is the best place in America to live if you're Gen Z; but what about Millennials? Love hanging out at Mount Hood, but hate driving up to the mountain? Do we have some good news for you. On this week's episode of Peak Northwest, we talk to Lizzy Acker, trending news reporter for The Oregonian/OregonLive, who recently wrote about the experience of travelling by bus to Oregon's tallest mountain. The latest in Acker's car-free travel series once again features her 3-year-old daughter, Nona, who joined along for snowy walks, skiing and snacking along the way. Taking the bus to Mt. Hood is one thing, but bringing along a toddler is a whole other adventure. Here are some highlights from this week's show: The bus routes that lead from Portland up to Mount Hood. How difficult was taking public transportation up the mountain? An afternoon with Nona in Government Camp. The Summit Ski Area is not only more accessible, but cheaper and less crowded than the other Mount Hood ski resorts. A trip to the Oregon coast is almost always a magical experience. Oregon's Cannon Beach is one of the closest coastal towns to Portland. With cute shops and boutiques, a great selection of restaurants and of course, Haystack Rock, there is good reason why so many people choose to spend a day trip or weekend there. What could possibly sweeten the deal, you ask? Not having to drive. On this week's Peak Northwest podcast, we get into our second episode of our new sub-series, My Epic Adventure, with The Oregonian/OregonLive's life and culture reporter, Lizzy Acker, as she recounts her most recent trip to Cannon Beach. Lizzy traveled entirely by bus to the coast with her three-year-old daughter. Here are some highlights from this week's show: Lizzy breaks down the logistics of the two-bus trip. How to keep kids entertained on the bus. Restaurant and lodging recommendations from Lizzy. Exploring the beach at night with clear skies makes for great stargazing. We hear from Lizzy's daughter herself on her takeaways from the trip. Subscribe to Peak Northwest anywhere you listen to podcasts. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

Nadia Kajouji was having a rough time. It was her first year of college, and she was suffering from depression. Feeling isolated, Nadia turned to an online forum where she found people struggling with suicidal thoughts. It didn’t take long for Nadia to make a new friend -- someone who understood what she was going through. The woman said her name was Cami. She was 31, a registered nurse, and living in Minneapolis. She claimed that she, too, was having suicidal thoughts. Then she suggested that she and Nadia make a suicide pact. Then Brandi tells us about the disappearance of Kyron Horman. To this day, what happened to little Kyron Horman remains unknown. What we do know is that on June 4, 2010, his stepmom Terri dropped him off at Skyline Elementary School, just in time for the science fair. She took a photo of Kyron in front of his poster, and then she says she watched him walk down the hall to class. But no one ever saw him in class. And despite the photo, no one remembered seeing him at the science fair, either. It was as if he’d vanished into thin air.And now for a note about our process. For each episode, Kristin reads a bunch of articles, then spits them back out in her very limited vocabulary. Brandi copies and pastes from the best sources on the web. And sometimes Wikipedia. Episode 20: Lizzy Acker: OregonLive Trending Team on Digital First Writing

PR Talk

Play Episode Listen Later Oct 19, 2017 75:22

Make no mistake. Lizzy Acker is a journalist. But in a nontraditional role for The Oregonian, Oregon’s traditionally daily newspaper, Lizzy’s role on the Trending Team is to rack up page-views on the newspaper’s website, OregonLive. But there’s always more, like: how she’s written a book and a zine, following a boy, creating her own jobs, social media for Portland’s beloved Powell’s, and “selling out” for her audience. Lizzy Acker is responsible for driving page views to Oregon’s largest daily newspaper’s website, OregonLive. For just over a year, she’s been combining her creative, personal voice with journalistic integrity in her role as a reporter on the Oregonian’s trending news team, “the most fun team to be on,” according to Lizzy. The trending team must hold strong value among the ranks of a publication that branded itself as “digital first” after shocking long-term subscribers by slashing its daily home delivery options in 2013. This new approach for the Oregonian requires a different kind of writing that can be quickly measured by clicks, shares and comments — pointing to a reporter’s effective or ineffective writing. Website news writing versus traditional news writing Reporters traditionally plunge into their reporting, coming up for air sometimes months or years later with meaningful stories impacting many people. However, these long-lead stories might not attract a ton of page-views which seem to come from quick writing that is often related to what’s going on right this instant. What’s different about Lizzy’s role is that she’s directly tasked with writing for her audience, rather than telling the news. This approach has many traditional reporters aghast. But Lizzy doesn’t believe that considering her audience before setting forth is “selling out.” She attempts to continually build her audience, a good thing for the Oregonian who is in the business of attracting eyeballs to content. While all of her posts end up on OregonLive, a select few make it into the paper. She loves this, saying “its cool to see your name in the paper.” Sometimes the only way she knows her words graced the dinosaur pages is how her audience connects, getting more phone calls and emails from readers as opposed to the usual online comments.
