ANYONE WHO'S DONE much driving around Oregon — especially along the coast — knows the state's bridges have a particular and distinctive style. That style is actually hard to put your finger on, isn't it? The bridges themselves are very different from one another. Many of them aren't even built with the same materials. The spectacular structure that soars over Coos Bay could not be much different in size, technique, and style from the elegant little archway that links Oregon City with West Linn; but even if you'd never seen them before, you could just look at either one of them and instantly identify it as an Oregon bridge. The common thread linking these classic Oregon bridges was Conde McCullough, the legendary bridge designer and engineer who led the teams that designed and built them. "What if the instant supernatural power of the Holy Spirit and the slow formative power of spiritual practices work in complement to one another, not competition?"In this teaching, Tyler Staton shows us the essential role that the Holy Spirit plays in our formation. He argues that formative practice and supernatural power are not conflicting ministries, inviting us to return the the roots of our faith by holding these two expressions in tandem. IN THE SMALL hours of the morning of Aug. 16, 1906, a powerful explosion jolted residents awake near the little town of Willamette, which today is a neighborhood of West Linn. It came from the direction of the nearby Tualatin River. The cause was soon discovered. When the first rays of the morning sun fell on the Oregon Iron and Steel Co.'s diversion dam, located a little over three miles from the river's mouth, a 20-foot-wide hole had been blasted in its center. The river water was still gushing through it. Executives of the Oregon Iron and Steel Co. were outraged. In newspaper interviews the next day, they pledged that the dam would be speedily rebuilt, and for weeks afterward newspapers like the Hillsboro Argus and the Oregon City Enterprise ran advertisements from the company offering a $500 reward for information leading to the arrest of whoever blew it up. They also fanned out around the neighborhood of farmers and residents along the Tualatin River upstream from the dam, making the same offer. But nobody seemed to know anything. Most of the residents wouldn't even admit to having heard the blast. They all knew, of course. Some of them had been in the party that had crept up to the dam in the pre-dawn darkness, set the charge, and touched it off.... The mission of Portland’s August Wilson Red Door Project is to “use the power of narrative art to bridge divides.” Its show "Evolve" does that by presenting scenes and monologues based on the real life experiences of Black Americans, police officers and others in the justice system. But it’s not just powerful stories on stage. The performances are interspersed with pauses throughout with opportunities for the audience to participate in guided reflection and sharing, based on their reactions to what they’re seeing and hearing. "Evolve" has been presented to general audiences and police departments, including Lake Oswego, Beaverton and West Linn. The next shows are at Beaverton’s Reser Center, Feb. 23-24. We’re joined by Red Door Project Artistic Director and Co-Founder Kevin Jones and Interim Portland Police Chief Bob Day, who has been integrally involved with this project for many years.

IT WAS GETTING toward the end of the summer of 1902, and West Linn resident Ellis Hughes was getting worried. His neighbor, William Dale, had traveled back to Eastern Oregon to sell some land he owned there. With the proceeds, Dale and Hughes planned to buy a piece of property next to the Hughes farm. The property belonged to the Oregon Iron and Steel Co., which wasn't really doing anything with it and which Hughes was pretty sure would be happy to sell … unless, of course, they found out why he wanted to buy it. Because earlier in the summer, while trespassing on it, Hughes had stumbled across the biggest meteorite that has ever been found on American soil, before or since, lying half-buried in a remote and thickly forested part of it. SheJumps is a nonprofit that offers programs in Oregon, Washington and 14 other states designed to reduce barriers for and boost the participation of women and girls in outdoor recreation activities. Since 2018, it has offered the Snowpack Avalanche Scholarship Program, a free, two-day course which teaches valuable safety skills in backcountry skiing. Unlike its traditional, downhill counterpart, backcountry skiing typically takes place on ungroomed and unpatrolled terrain where avalanche risk abounds and equipment like shovels and rescue beacons can help save lives. Columbia Gorge News previously wrote about the organization's most recent course which was held last month at Mount Hood and awarded to 12 people, half of them women of color. Joining us to talk about the scholarship program and the impact it's having to make snow sports more inclusive are Robyn Gelfand, the national program director at SheJumps, and Vivian Tang, a West Linn-based recipient of the 2022-2023 SheJumps Snowpack Avalanche Scholarship.
Well, today is a bit of a bummer, right? Across the country the NCAA Tournaments are getting underway and here in Oregon the Ducks and Beavers are, well, home. In this week's Traffic Report, Shane Hoffmann and I try and figure out why, and also recap Tualatin's thrilling upset of West Linn in the 6A boys state tournament. Then — oh yeah, today is a twofer — Chantel Jennings stops by to give us the lowdown on the Women's NCAA bracket and how the Caitlin Clark Show at Iowa compares to the Sabrina days in Eugene. In September, a grand jury declined to charge a former West Linn doctor accused of sexual abuse by more than 100 women and children. Now a new release of documents and police reports could provide more insight into why the doctor wasn't indicted. Holly Bartholomew has been following this story for the West Linn Tidings newspaper. She joins us to talk more about the case, and what the alleged victims would like to see happen next.
