From the uniquely creative mind of the great actor Sir Peter Ustinov came an unusual fable starring God and the devil. It was Ustinov's satire called The Old Man and Mr. Smith. Book Vs. Movie: Evil Under the SunThe Agatha Christie Novel Vs the 1982 FilmAgatha Christie's Evil Under the Sun (1941) is a masterclass in misdirection and suspense. The 1982 film adaptation, directed by Guy Hamilton and featuring Peter Ustinov as Hercule Poirot, transforms the story into a glamorous whodunit set in a sun-soaked Mediterranean locale.  Both versions center around the murder of actress Arlena Stuart at a resort, with Poirot reluctantly drawn into the investigation, uncovering secrets among the guests, each with a motive. While the book is set on a secluded Devon island during World War II, featuring a more introspective tone, the film opts for colorful costumes and picturesque settings, filmed in Mallorca. Poirot in the book is sharp and formal, while Ustinov's portrayal is warmer and more humorous, appealing to some fans for its charm and theatricality.Between the original novel and the film — did we prefer one over the other? Movie reviews #49 coming in hot today.
Just 5 70's movies to review, sooooo let's review the review.
1. (The Andromeda Strain 1971) Epic movie Director Robert Wise is at the helm here, with a movie Based on a Michael Crichton novel way before it was a 90's standard thing to do.
That statement is dead wrong though, there are 9 MC novels or short stories adapted into films in the 70's, 3 in the 80's, and 7 in the 90's. I think it's only because Jurassic Park had the hype of like 6 70's movies, shit, I dunno. This movie is about a deadly element from space, SCIENCE, and a real cool facility that gives you paper clothes.
2. (Boxcar Bertha 1972) Not to jump the shark but I think this one's easy, we all agree that we love Bertha, but not so much this early Martin Scorsese film. Barbara Hershey rules, also Bill of Kill Bill, and the history teacher of Bill and Ted are here.
3. (In this house of Brede 1975) Don't yuk this bizarre recovering catholic's yum, but here we have Diana Ring as Nun, say no more!
ok just a bit more she is a woman who is sick of all the shitty men and bullshit and goes to the convent to get away from it all and do rad shit in peace, apparently I should read the book too.
4. (Death on the Nile 1978) I'm sorry but I do love me some Peter Ustinov, He is Agatha Christie's Poirot here, along with flippin every one else.
Mia Farrow, Bette Davis, Miss murder she done sat down and wrote, David Niven, Jack Warden, and Professor McGonagall, to name a few.
This time they are on a boat not a train.
5. (Birth of the Beatles 1979) Waited for the encore tv airing of this so I could record it with a video cassette that I had bought. This one hugely influenced me to want to play music. Wonderful to finally see this again with friends and review. This movie is from the director of Return of the Jedi.
we out, thanks for listening.

Flight Through Entirety: A Doctor Who Podcast

This week, six millennials are astonishingly successful finding a large house to rent — the power points don't work, there's no mobile reception and the walls are quite literally made of alien woodlice. Oh, and it collapses into dust on their first night. It's Knock Knock. Notes and links Brendan quickly identifies two of the film antecedents of this story: The Evil Dead (1981), with its demonically possessed trees, and Hitchcock's Psycho (1960), whose antagonist has a complex relationship with his mother. Nathan first encounters David Suchet as Blott in Blott on the Landscape (1985), a BBC adaptation of Tom Sharpe's 1975 satirical novel of the same name. Knock Knock was written by Mike Bartlett, who was famous for a TV series called Dr Foster (2015), starring Suranne Jones as a woman who starts to suspect her husband of infidelity. David Suchet's first appearance in a Poirot property starring Peter Ustinov as Poirot — the 1985 made-for-TV movie Thirteen at Dinner (1985), an adaptation of Christie's Lord Edgeware Dies (1933), in which Suchet played Inspector Japp. Simon refers to the vault-related theorising of Whovians, a comedy aftershow that accompanied Series 10, 11 and 12 of Doctor Who on ABC-TV in Australia. Our very own Adam Richard was a regular in the show's first two seasons. And finally, Brendan recklessly introduces us to another possible inspiration for this episode, the 1977 film Death Bed: The Bed That Eats, which we would all have been better off not knowing about. This week we're reading one of Tove's most famous short stories: The Invisible Child. It's a pretty bright and funny story with very dark themes. We both like it, but it doesn't quite live up to the hype, for us. Little My is picking poisonous mushrooms (what else is new?), Moomintroll is an ass, and Moominmamma is a confirmed witch. It's a good one for cameos of Too-Ticky, and vengeance on fathers. We've got quite the fungus-based Natural History/Translation chat. We talk about whether bashing coldly ironical types in the head is even any use. Justice for people with hair colours that aren't black or yellow! There is a deep dive into Nina's ginger experience, and the way gingers, particularly ginger girls, are represented in kids' fiction. Our Spirits of the Moomins are The Little Prince by Saint Exupery, as read by Peter Ustinov, and Where the Wild Ladies Are, by Matsuda Aoko and translated by Polly Barton. Welcome to Cyberpunk Cinema – the Definitive Dive into the Dark Future of Science Fiction. I am your host, Anthony La Pira, and I will be taking you on a cinematic journey through the sprawling cityscapes, the crippling datastorms, and the cybernetic implants that encompass all things Cyberpunk. In this week's episode, I will be breaking-down the 1976 protopunk thriller, Logan's Run  – directed by Michael Anderson, starring Michael York, Jenny Agutter, Richard Jordan, Farah Fawcett, Peter Ustinov, and Roscoe Lee Browne.A police officer in the future uncovers the deadly secret behind a society that worships youth.Logan's Run was a landmark science-fiction film of the mid-1970s that posed the question – would you live in a utopian society where you didn't have to work or struggle but the payoff is that you'd have to sacrifice your life by the time you reach 30? That's the dilemma that haunts Logan and Jessica, as they decide to press their luck and see what remains outside the dome. It is a fascinating exploration on how we create the walls that imprison us from reality, the laws that govern us with fear, and the lies we tell each other that blind us from the truth. The RSA gang reached 500 subscribers, just hitting 800 as of recent, now they get to give you the fans a treat! One of the most iconic Walt Disney animated movies, Robin Hood! The gang promised you a Disney movie to celebrate hitting 500 subs, and they now are promising more Disney movies to come. Robin Hood is a 1973 American animated musical adventure comedy film produced by Walt Disney Productions and released by Buena Vista Distribution. Produced and directed by Wolfgang Reitherman, it is based on the English folktale "Robin Hood". The story follows the adventures of Robin Hood, Little John, and the inhabitants of Nottingham as they fight against the excessive taxation of Prince John, and Robin Hood wins the hand of Maid Marian. The film features the voices of Brian Bedford, Phil Harris, Peter Ustinov, Pat Buttram, Monica Evans, Terry-Thomas, Roger Miller, and Carole Shelley. The idea to adapt Robin Hood into an animated feature was dated back to Walt Disney's interest in the tale of Reynard the Fox following the release of Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs (1937). The idea was repeatedly shelved for several decades. In 1968, Ken Anderson pitched a film adaptation of Robin Hood, incorporating ideas from Reynard the Fox by using anthropomorphic animals rather than humans. The project was approved, becoming the first completely "post-Walt" animated feature and the first with an entirely non-human cast. Robin Hood was released on November 8, 1973. The film received mixed reviews from critics, but it was nonetheless a box-office success, grossing $33 million worldwide against a production budget of $5 million. Although some retrospective reviews have called out its use of recycled animation, the film's reputation has grown positively over time and has since become a cult classic.

Turning an Agatha Christie story in a broad, comedic, European farce, sounds fatal on paper. But with its acidic, modernist Noel Coward script, a cast from heaven to deliver it (Maggie Smith, Diana Rigg, Peter Ustinov, James Mason, Jane Birkin...) all sound-tracked by Cole Porter, as a film, it maybe the finest Christie adaption of all.

In a world where most of us associate reality with vibrant colors, Ustinov's choice to present "Billy Budd" in black and white raises intriguing questions. Ivor Montagu, being one who questioned it, found Ustinov's response peculiar, realizing that the audience lacked disbelief. Should they have found it strange? Can a film rid of color actually appear more real to us? In this episode, we'll explore the complexities of perception, the power of artistic illusions, and how these forms of art have developed over time.Credits: Short clips from the movie "Billy Budd", directed by Peter UstinovWebsites mentioned in podcastIntro/outro soundtracks: https://stock.adobe.com/audio?as_channel=sem&as_campclass=nonbrand&as_campaign=US%7CCPRO%7CStock%7CAWAR%7CAudio_Exact%7CGG%7C%7C&as_source=google&as_camptype=acquisition&sdid=YXPZG2JH&mv=search&ef_id=CjwKCAiApNSABhAlEiwANuR9YOyXszTQRWlMS39UOcCzzSPVca-eOLJOpRw76Z1vbSvrEmEBp423wxoCyYcQAvD_BwE:G:s&s_kwcid=AL!3085!3!450951804139!e!!g!!royalty%20free%20music!10630983778!104620769186&gclid=CjwKCAiApNSABhAlEiwANuR9YOyXszTQRWlMS39UOcCzzSPVca-eOLJOpRw76Z1vbSvrEmEBp423wxoCyYcQAvD_BwE

Verbier Festival Gold's first release of 2023 is based on the concept of storytelling, a theme that is central to many of the festival's performances. This offering pairs two tantalizing performances from the very first summers of the organization's history. First, Peter Ustinov narrates Jean de Brunhoff's iconic tale "L'Histoire de Babar, le petit éléphant". Charming piano accompaniment by Poulenc, played by Roger Vignoles, serves as a backdrop to the text. Second, world-renowned soprano Barbara Hendricks is joined by Carmina Quartet for a stunning rendition of Fauré's “La Bonne Chanson”. The gorgeous poems of Paul Verlaine unfold their very own charm in Hendrick's interpretationTracks:Peter Ustinov, Roger Vignoles No. 1, Introduction 00:13 Peter Ustinov, Roger Vignoles No. 2, Dans la grande forêt 01:44 Peter Ustinov, Roger Vignoles No. 3, Babar a grandi 00:49 Peter Ustinov, Roger Vignoles No. 4, Babar se promène très heureux sur le dos de sa maman 01:06 Peter Ustinov, Roger Vignoles No. 5, Tour à coup, un vilain chasseur ... 00:52 Peter Ustinov, Roger Vignoles No. 6, Au bout de quelques jours 02:29 Peter Ustinov, Roger Vignoles No. 7, Maintenant Babar habite chez la vieille dame 01:09 Peter Ustinov, Roger Vignoles No. 8, Tous les jours il se promène en auto 00:21 Peter Ustinov, Roger Vignoles No. 9, Pourtant Babar n'est pas tout à fait heureux 01:20 Peter Ustinov, Roger Vignoles No. 10, Deux années ont passé 00:52 Peter Ustinov, Roger Vignoles No. 11, Ensuite il les emmène chez le patissier 00:55 Peter Ustinov, Roger Vignoles No. 12, Pendant ce temps, dans la forêt 00:33 Peter Ustinov, Roger Vignoles No. 13, Heureusement, en volant sur la ville 00:22 Peter Ustinov, Roger Vignoles No. 14, Les mamans d'Arthur et de Céleste partent les chercher à la … 00:31 Peter Ustinov, Roger Vignoles No. 15, Babar se décide à partir avec Arthur 01:53 Peter Ustinov, Roger Vignoles No. 16, Ils sont partis … 00:53 Peter Ustinov, Roger Vignoles No. 17, Le même jour, hélas 01:57 Peter Ustinov, Roger Vignoles No. 18, Après l'enterrement 02:40 Peter Ustinov, Roger Vignoles No. 19, Babar dit alors à Cornelius 01:01 Peter Ustinov, Roger Vignoles No. 20, Les invités commencement à arriver 00:50 Peter Ustinov, Roger Vignoles No. 21, Mariage de Babar 01:31 Peter Ustinov, Roger Vignoles No. 22, Après le mariage et le couronnement 01:04 Peter Ustinov, Roger Vignoles No. 23, La fête est finie 02:24 Barbara Hendricks, Michel Dalberto, Carmina Quartet I. ‘I'm Spartacus!' In the field of epic film making, the 1960 historical drama ‘Spartacus', is legendary. Directed by Stanley Kibrick, adapted from the Howard Fast novel by Red Scare blacklisted screenwriter, Dalton Trumbo, and starring Kirk Douglas, Laurence Olivier, Peter Ustinov and Jean Simmons; it is a classic. But how much of the plot has emerged from the true story of a Thracian gladiator and slave who escaped his Roman captors and led an unsuccessful but impressive rebellion against their oppressors? How much of the film's message was formed by the personalities involved in its creation, and the context in which it was made. In her own words, Dr Fiona Radford devoted years of her life to the man with the most memorable chin cleft in the world - Kirk Douglas, specifically as Spartacus. Her thesis traced the production history of this film, examining in particular the effect that the turbulent process had on the portrayal of female characters. Having taught at Macquarie University, ANU and the University of Sydney, she currently teaches history at secondary school level, and her conversation with Tristan in this episode is an eye-opener to 1950s film making as well as the legend of Spartacus. For more Ancients content, subscribe to our Ancients newsletter here. What will happen when the alien ships strike Earth? And later? Who will survive? What will life be like in that latter-day jungle? William F. Nolan, that's next on The Lost Sci-Fi Podcast, with at least one lost vintage sci-fi short story in every episode. When I recorded Small World at the request of Mike Jones, thanks Mike, I had no idea that the author, William F. Nolan wrote the book, with George Clayton Johnson, that led to one of my favorite sci-fi movies, Logan's Run. The 1976 movie featured Michael York, Jenny Agutter, Farrah Fawcett and Peter Ustinov. I enjoy going to movie locations and when I discovered that the scene where Logan and Jessica discover an old man played by Peter Ustinov, the first elderly person either of them has ever seen, was filmed at the Fort Worth Water Gardens, I had to go see it for myself. So, if it hadn't been for you Mike Jones, requesting the short sci-fi story Small World, I would never have known that William F. Nolan also wrote Logan's Run. Long before Logan, Nolan began writing short fiction stories in 1952 and he would continue to write into his 90s!He is credited with more than 180 short stories, today's story, Small World is the 8th such story written by Nolan. Let's go back in time 65 years to the pages of Fantastic Universe Magazine, August 1957, on page 98 you will discover Small World written by William F.
