Marni welcomes Lori Dennis into the Den to talk about finding balance in four quadrants of your life. Lori runs a top LA interior design firm, and she is an HGTV celebrity. Lori decided to write Quadrant Life: Balancing Relationships, Finances, Wellness, and Your Spiritual Life as a result of the constant questions others asked her about how she always seemed to have it all. She is a TED speaker and has been featured in the Wall Street Journal and on Bravo and Oxygen.   Key takeaways from this episode:  Making happiness a choice How to find balance in your life Strategies for cleaning up your messes Figure out what happiness means for you   Living the Quadrant Life [3:56]  One of the biggest misconceptions/excuses women believe is that they can't have it all. Lori says this is ridiculous. Women can have it all. They only need to get everything into balance. She says happiness comes when you wake up every single day and no matter what happens you know you can handle it.    But, if happiness is a choice, why do many of us try to make things more challenging? Lori recommends asking yourself what happiness looks like for you. It's all about your perceptions and your experiences. Being happy is one of the best decisions you can make for yourself.  Find balance in these four quadrants: Relationships Finances Wellness Spiritual  Once you stop being afraid, you have the ability to clean up your messes.    Tips for Finding Balance in the Quadrants [19:17]  To attain proper balance in the four quadrants, Lori says, it's like cleaning your house. Her personal approach is to attack the thing that is scary or hard first. Once she accomplishes what she believes to be the hardest thing it gives her confidence to tackle the less stressful items in her life.   Marni shares an example of how she took a deep dive to uplevel her spiritual practice and it up-leveled everything else in her life.    Lori says, focusing in one area is a good approach because if you just change one thing that isn't working for you it will change every other part of your life. Small positive changes automatically affect every other quadrant.    Tips for Up-leveling each Quadrant:  Relationships — Learn how to say no.  Finance — Consider purchases for 2 days before taking action. Wellness — Get up and move.   Spirituality — Pay it forward once a week.   Changing Your Environment [31:45]   Instead of wishing you had different things in life, it is up to you to make your life exactly the way that you want it. You can have it all. Having freedom in your environment will affect you in a good way. Remove excess material stuff you don’t need and be thoughtful about your environment.    Make a Connection: Visit Our Website Join Our Dating Den Facebook Community Here! I started Convo By Design seven years ago because I saw an opportunity to tell the stories of creators, designers, architects, artists, set decorators and others who change the way we live, build and design. I started recording panels and keynotes from West Week, Fall Market, Legends and of course, WestEdge Design Fair. After I started working with WestEdge co-founder’s Troy Hanson and Megan Reilly, the opportunity presented itself to start producing the stage. For two years now, the Convo By Design Programming Lounge has been a place to share new ideas, engage and explore the stories from inside SoCal's vibrant world of design and architecture. Rapidly, a new class of creators has emerged. These artisans are taking the industry to the next level through the work as well as through the stories they’re telling and the business they're building. They are multi-dimensional. I crafted a panel called Rockstars, Rebels, and Raconteurs to showcase some of these unique personalities. This group included designers Lori Dennis and  Ryan Saghian as well as architect, Jean Brownhill. Consider this a blueprint for success and a roadmap for any new creative endeavor. This chat was fun and covers a lot of ground so let’s get to it. Here are some of the topics covered: Who are you? What an interesting question. Do you know? They do. The next topic is one very near and dear to my heart, it too was covered at WestEdge and you will be hearing about it later this year on the podcast. The topic is mentorship. The next topic is connections. So important and you’re going to hear why. You have heard a lot about talk collaborations and you are about to hear more..this is good, really good. Okay, we have covered a lot of ground here. Identity, mentorship, connections, collaborations… You’re about to hear about fear.  Not a topic often addressed but so important. Everyone feels it, but everyone responds differently. Here is how this group of rebels handles their fear. From fear to drive and you’ll hear how they are connected. From fear to drive, what could the next subject possibly be but working on the edge… If you are going to change the business, disrupt or whatever you want to call it, you have to find your niche, locate the need, find the audience looking for what you have to offer. From finding the need to maintaining momentum. This is a hard one. Making it to the top is one thing, staying there is another… Finally, it comes down to blazing trails and doing things differently… So there you have it for Rockstars, Rebels, and Raconteurs with Lori Dennis, Jean Brownhill, and Ryan Saghian. This is a blueprint for any creator looking to take their game to the next level. Special thanks to Ryan, Jean, and Lori. Thank you, Megan and Troy, thank you Erika Heet for moderating this conversation, thank you, John McClain, Kevin Isbell, Julia Wong and Nicolette Akiko for designing our stage at WestEdge. Thank you, Walker Zanger, for your support and thank you for listening, without you, there is no Convo By Design. If you didn’t listen to part 1, you might want to go back to Episode 58 and listen to that one first.  First we will quickly reiterate a few important details: 1.     High Point Market is the largest home furnishings trade show in the world. It brings more than 75,000 people to High Point, N.C., every six months to view product from more than 2,000 exhibitors. 2.     Highpoint market is in the Spring and Fall so the upcoming show is coming up soon - October 19th-23rd. 3.     If you haven’t registered yet, you can still do so at highpointmark.org/register.   3.  OUR FAVORITES  On Episode 58 we talked a lot about the logistics of High Point – where to stay, where to eat and how to get around. On this show we’d like to dig deeper and let you know about some of our favorite showrooms, new news coming out from the Highpoint Market Authority and some great educational opportunities.  A.     Cool Stuff to be Aware Of                 i.         Evening Programming -  HMA is rebranding its popular evening concert series. In the area between Showplace the the Transportation Terminal,  there will be new festivities dubbed “Eats and Beats” where there will be outdoor seating and firepits and (2) areas sponsored by Crate & Barrel and CB2 that will have music, giant outdoor games, cocktails, a dj and a whole lot more.  There will still be (2) concerts by T Sisters and Mandolin Orange.               ii.         Style Spotters -  Keep your eye out for this years Style Spotters who are eight design and fashion leaders who showcase the top new styles for each market.  Look for their black and white cards on products through out the market. We were Style Spotters for 2 years and it was a lot of fun and a lot of work.  This years style spotters are Shayla Copas, Kara Cox, Cynthia Ferguson, Eric Haydel, Benjamin Johnston, Courtney McLeod, Laura Thurman and Erinn Valencich.  This group will be hosting Trend Tours so look those up because some of them require reservations.              iii.         Design Bloggers Tour Hosted by HPMA and Esteem Media – The Design Bloggers Tour will bring (1) leading design bloggers to HPA for a. 2-day tour of sponsoring showrooms. Those bloggers will then be featuring all that they learned on their individual blogs and social media accounts. This is just one of many ways that if you cannot attend market you can still be in the know. Watch out for this bloggers and all they have to share: Sara Malek Barney, Laurence Carr, Lori Dennis, Tim Green, Donna Mancini, Amy Mitchell, Rachel Moriarty, Lisa Peck, Sara Noble and Deborah von Donop.              iv.         HPM Brand Ambassadors – Our friends Jacki Von Tobel and Deb Barrett are newly appointed HPMA Ambassadors. They will be hosting a new-buyer focused 5-day tour that will provide first time attendees a HPM immersion. If I was brand new to High Point, this is the very first thing I would sign up for.               v.         Educational and Social Programming – Do NOT make the mistake of going to HPM and spending every minute of your day looking at product. Your feet and your brain will appreciate you changing gears. Look for events at The Point (https://www.highpointmarket.org/plan-your-trip/the-point), in Highpoint Theatre, Market Suites and in many showrooms.  There are SO many good ones but I few we have our eyes on: 1.     Friday at 8:30am – Breakfast with Tom Felicia at Pandora’s Manor to celebrate 25 years in business. Sponsored by Eastern Accents. 2.     Saturday at 10am at Alden Parkes – “From Set Backs to Success: How to Manage and Grow your Design Firm in the Face of Diversity” with Traci O’Connell. 3.     Saturday at 10am at Woodbridge – “Coffee with Creatives” with Tobi Fairley and Lauren Liess. This past weekend was the WestEdge Design Fair and once again, Troy Hanson and Megan Reilly have outdone themselves. I have been so fortunate to be associated with Troy and Megan at WestEdge. This is my favorite design event because it is really, as Troy and Megan have called it, “the anti-trade show”. Not that shows for the trade are bad, they are great. This one is presented differently and having worked with them for so many years, they try to give their attendees something new and different. In that spirit, I wanted to do something unique as well and for Convo By Design, this was a huge endeavor. We were the presenting partners for the Programming Lounge and there were really two sides to this. The programming side and the design side. For the design, I turned to a trusted friend and incredible talent, Julia Wong of Julia Wong Designs. Julia did something fantastic with this space, not the least of which was collaborating with me to create a custom podcast desk that is completely mobile, dripping with luxury detail and designed for podcasters, YouTubers, home office communications as well as a great place for family based digital communications in a clean space with hidden wires and enough room for the whole family or team. It is also available for purchase with a ton of customized details. For more information, email the show convobydesign@outlook dot com and reference “Podcast Desk” in the subject line. Okay, so this episode is special. It is a kickoff from the event and features the first conversation of the event featuring acclaimed designer Lori Dennis, Nicholas Gawith of Publicis.Sapient and Ivette Serrano of Lamps Plus. We talked about brand development for creatives. I wanted this group to cover the topic from the single designer to that of a global brand and this group delivered. After the stage segment ended, we broke up into groups and audience members became participants in a workshop with the panelists, it was special. Thank you to WestEdge Design Fair for allowing me the latitude to experiment, thank you to ASID Los Angeles for presenting this conversation and thank you to Lori, Nick and Ivette for their time and insights. And a huge thank you to you for listening as well as those that came to WestEdge Design Fair and participated in the events in the Programming Lounge presented by Convo By Design. Lori Dennis, MA, RP is a psychotherapist in the Toronto area and the author of Lyme Madness scheduled to be published in the fall of 2016 - it’s a memoir and cautionary tale about chronic Lyme disease. The story is driven by her son's illness and their harrowing journey - from a cascade of acute symptoms to the many missteps toward diagnosis to the various stages and shades of hard-won healing. Lori hopes her book will bring further validation to the many sufferers, greater action within the medical community, and will wave a red flag to other mental health professionals who may not be aware that chronic Lyme disease is a critical differential diagnosis.
