What happens when a church does all the right things but with the wrong motivation? In this message, Pastor Eric Robertson shares our necessary response. Ultimately, the Book of Revelation is about a problem that is only solved when God's people wake up, repent, and faithfully wait on the return of Jesus. One of the worst problems is the one you don't know you have.Even worse are the problems you can see but don't recognize.Ephesus: HistoryEphesus was an influential city in the Roman world: a major port city in Asia Minor—economically powerful, culturally diverse, and religiously pluralistic. Faithfulness required constant discernment. The city was defined by idol worship. The Temple of Artemis was one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World. Converting to Christianity meant rejecting the city's spiritual identity and economic system (Acts 19).Though the church seemed to be doing well, there was a glaring problem that John addressed. What Did It Mean: Revelation 2:1–7Each letter follows the criticism sandwich: (Good)(Bad)(Good).Jesus gives this critique while walking among the lampstands—the churches that illuminate Christ to the world. They served well, worked hard, corrected the wicked, removed toxic leaders, suffered faithfully, and didn't grow weary. Ephesus was a hard-working church.Imagine hearing: "You're great—but you don't love me."The letters were written to specific churches, but meant for all churches. What Does It Mean? This passage is often preached as a call to return to passion, but Jesus doesn't critique their passion.Paul once said of them: "Your faith in the Lord Jesus and your love for all God's people" (Eph. 1:15–16).The problem wasn't their works, but their why. They disconnected from the reason they exist.Returning to your first love is remembering why you do what you do: to love God and love others. When a church forgets its why, it doesn't stop working—it stops breathing. Our vision is Belong, Believe, Become, but Ephesus drifted into Believe, Become, Belong. When love is no longer the motivation, we build walls instead of bridges and become known for what we're against instead of Who we're for.How Do We Respond?1. Remember – "Consider how far you have fallen."Remember where you were when God found you and why the church exists.2. Repent – "Repent."Recognize how far you've drifted. The church illuminates Jesus, not itself.3. Return – "Do the things you did at first."Matthew 22:37–40: Love God and love your neighbor. If you don't love your neighbor, you don't have love at all.Closing: Revelation 2:7Whoever has ears, let them hear what the Spirit says to the churches.Returning to our first love is a return to paradise—the life God intended. If we fail to hear, our lampstand will be removed. The church at Ephesus no longer exists—only ruins remain.Have we fallen from our first love?

In the final sermon of the 'Love Now' series, Chris Montgomery delves into the profound biblical call to love one another as articulated in 1 John 4. This sermon challenges the church community to embody Christ's love in tangible ways, encouraging believers to reflect on how they will demonstrate God's love in the coming year. Through scriptural insights, the message emphasizes the importance of loving within the church community and explores how this love serves as a testament to the world of God's presence and perfection.

February 2, 2025 - Kyle Rye - Love Story - Boaz's Love For Others by Buford Church of Christ
Loving others is an essential part of following Jesus. But how are we supposed to do it? In this sermon, we look at the need for love, the ways of love, and the cost of love. Key Verses: Romans 12:9-21
Episode Summary:In this episode, Bobby Bosler shares a convicting challenge from Matthew 15, where Jesus rebukes the Pharisees for prioritizing their traditions over God's commands. Drawing from a recent revival meeting in Taylors, South Carolina, Bobby opens up about how God confronted him with the importance of genuine love and obedience in his own life. He explores how even spiritual activities can become excuses for selfishness if our hearts are not truly aligned with God.Topics Discussed:The dangers of prioritizing traditions over obedience to God (Matthew 15:1-9).A personal testimony of choosing love and service over personal convenience. The importance of syncing your heart with God's through total surrender.Practical ways to avoid spiritual hypocrisy in daily life.Key Takeaways:True obedience to God involves prioritizing love for others over personal convenience.Religious actions mean little if our hearts are far from God.When we draw close to God, our hearts will beat in sync with His, leading us to genuine love and service. Hebrews 6:10. For God is not unjust so as to forget your work and the love which you have shown toward His name, in having ministered and in still ministering to the saints. Righteousness and justice are the foundation of God's throne, according to Ps. 89:14. Psalms 33:5 tells us that the Lord “loves righteousness and justice; the earth is full of the lovingkindness of the Lord.” That's why the Holy Spirit said that God will not forget the love shown toward His name by the love for the saints that has been expressed by those the author knows are ready to press on to maturity in Christ. The Lord loves righteousness, which is love expressed to others. He also loves justice. If God is just, which of course He is, He must punish those who do evil and reward those who do good. So if we are living to love with Jesus, let us first be encouraged that God will reward us in Christ, for our loving is because of the life of Christ dwelling within us. Surely, God will reward His Son and those of us who work and love with Him. Second, love for the name of the Lord is one of the “better things” that the author cites that accompanies salvation. When someone is saved, they have a desire to see God glorified in their lives. Concern for the name of Jesus underlies their daily words and actions. To love God is to love His name. In this verse, we learn two evidences of saving faith. It works to glorify the name of Jesus and works to minister to the saints. Third, we see that love for the name of Jesus is shown by ministering or loving our brothers and sisters in Christ. The people the author had in mind not only had at one time ministered to the saints, they were still doing it! It had become their lifestyle. So, not only love for the name of Jesus, but love for others is another “better thing” that accompanies salvation. Do you see why I say that living to love with Jesus should be our purpose in life? It's how we glorify the name of Jesus. We were created for God's glory. If we love His glory, then we show our love toward His name by working and loving with Jesus. We glorify our God by living to love with Jesus. I suggest there is no higher purpose for life in this world than that. So my final encouragement today is that you adopt this purpose as an expression of your love for God and love for His name, expecting to be a partaker in the reward our Father gives to His Son. I'm sure you won't be disappointed, just like those the author had in mind in this verse.
Are you a person that loves other people? Are you looking for ways to sacrificially give yourselves for the needs of those around you? According to John, the answer to the question helps prove or disprove your claim to faith. “Brotherly love," Matthew Henry says, "is the badge of Christ's disciples." /// Reach out to Micah and the Walk Talks team by emailing mdherbster@southlandcamp.org!

Episode Notes It's becoming more common to share truth in hate. If we say we love the truth, we must have love for our brother/sister. If we say it's love to share that truth, we must do so by fruits of the Holy Spirit. When our love for the truth & His word becomes twisted, and is used as a weapon to attack fellow believers on non-fundamental, minor theological disagreements, we become breakers of the very law we say we love.

As we conclude our powerful series called Assured, we're discovering how we can know with absolute certainty whether or not we're saved. God doesn't want you living in fear and doubt!
We tend to use the word “love” pretty loosely. It can refer to your feelings about your pets, your spouse, or your favorite food! So what does the Bible mean when it talks about loving your neighbor?
Part of being a good friend means listening well – take time out of your day to listen to a struggling friend. Instead of jumping in with your opinion, just listen.
