In last week's podcast, we learned how Lyn St. James started with humble beginnings and progressed to the highest levels of professional auto racing. This week St. James will tell us about the Women in Motorsports North America program. From the interesting origin of WIMNA, to where they're going in the future. The bottom line is that this organization is designed to advance opportunities for women throughout the motorsports industry. Their big event of the year is the Women with Drive Summit III coming up on November 7-8, 2023 in Avondale, Arizona. For more information on the summit, go to: www.womenwithdrivesummit.com. For more information on the organization, go to: www.womeninmotorsportsna.com. Women have played a key role in motorsports for many years in a multitude of roles. St. James (as usual) is at the forefront of helping drive the return on investment for those she works with. Enjoy! NOTE: Lyn St. James will be part of a panel discussion at the Petersen Automotive Museum on May 24th, 2023 – “A Tribute to Paula Murphy.” There will be a screening of the Paula Murphy: Undaunted documentary, followed by the panel discussion and a silent auction. Paula Murphy also broke barriers for women in motorsports. She set multiple land speed records, was the first woman to drive a jet dragster and much more. This will be a great opportunity to see her and St. James in person and to hear some great stories. For many of us, our stories begin with amateur racing in SCCA, and our guest is no exception. Full time-secretary and piano teacher by day, by the age of 26 she moonlighted in racing behind the wheel of a Ford Pinto which doubled as her daily driver. Quickly moving up the ranks, she fought alongside names like Haywood, Stuck and Ribbs in Trans-Am and IMSA. She would take home titles in races like the 12 hours of Sebring, 24 hours of Rolex and 24 hours of the Nürburgring. In 1992, the mold wasn't just broken… it was shattered, and at the age of 45, proving that neither gender nor age matter in Motorsports - she entered the Indianapolis 500, earning the title rookie of the year. We are proud to welcome, the one and only, Lyn St. James to Break/Fix.

It all started with a chat just prior to the start of the 2021 Indianapolis 500.  Racing legend Lyn St. James has been a longtime advocate for women in motorsports and had basically run out of gas while carrying the banner for equality.  But, when she witnessed first-hand what Beth Paretta was doing with her Paretta Autosport team at the Indy 500, she was refueled. She reached out to Paretta about forming an organization to help facilitate women's participation in the sport they both loved and Beth was on board 1000% as she told Lyn – You are not alone.  Together they contacted a team of about 40 women currently working as professionals in motorsport, along with some male allies, and a working group was formed in August 2021 to advance the idea to reality.  Today, The Women in Motorsports North America (WIMNA) organization is a community of professionals supporting opportunities for women across all disciplines of motorsport. By creating an inclusive, resourceful environment, the 501 (c)(3) charity looks to foster mentorship, advocacy, education, and growth to help ensure a successful and effective future for women in professional motorsports roles.  Beth and Lyn chat with host Amanda Busick about how their dream has become a reality and the opportunities and events that have already developed because of their new venture.   Two motorsport powerhouses in one podcast.  This is a good one.
