What does it take to keep a 40-year-old brand rooted in nostalgia relevant in a rapidly evolving, tech-driven world? In this special episode recorded live from the X4 Summit in Salt Lake City, I sit down with Maggie Stafford, Vice President of People Insights at Hagerty, to explore how a company best known for classic car insurance has become a technology-enabled, community-powered lifestyle brand for auto enthusiasts. From cloud-based transformation to one-on-one customer experiences, Maggie shares how Hagerty is modernizing its approach to customer and employee engagement—while staying true to its mission to "save driving." We discuss the evolution of Hagerty's digital experience, including their $20 million investment into a modern tech stack, designed not only to improve operational efficiency but also to meet growing member expectations. Maggie also gives a behind-the-scenes look at how the brand's culture—one where employees learn to drive stick and take collector cars for a spin—shapes everything from customer service to product development. You'll hear how community remains the beating heart of the business, with more than 850,000 Hagerty Drivers Club members connecting at grassroots events and exclusive experiences like the Festival of the Unexceptional and Amelia Island Concours. We also explore how Hagerty is using data and insights to prepare for the future of car culture, at a time when automation, electrification, and driverless vehicles are becoming the new norm. So how does a brand that celebrates the visceral joy of driving stay relevant in an era of AI and autonomy? And what can other businesses—especially those outside the traditional tech space—learn from Hagerty's approach to transformation and loyalty? Tune in to find out, and don't forget to share your thoughts: how do you balance tradition with innovation in your business?

THE WEEKLY DRIVER
#285, Hagerty’s 40-year celebration

THE WEEKLY DRIVER

Play Episode Listen Later Apr 18, 2024 29:56

Tarra Warnes and her husband once owned two Yugos. The sub-compact three-door hatchback and two-door convertible are often cited as the worst vehicles in history. The Yugo enthusiast family's idea was to use one vehicle to provide parts for its counterpart's restoration as a race car. The outcome isn't as relevant as the irony of Warnes telling the tale. She's vice president of creative strategy at Hagerty. It's the insurance company, marketplace, magazine, website publisher and automotive event organizer focusing on classic cars and their owners. Tarra is our guest this week on The Weekly Driver Podcast. Co-host Bruce Aldrich and I interview Warnes about Hagerty's advancement from a small company to its current status with more than 1,700 employees. The company began in 1984. Husband and wife Frank and Louise Hagerty couldn't find satisfactory insurance coverage for their wooden boats, so their new Michigan company did. Insurance for cars and other vehicles followed. The couple's son McKeel Hagerty became CEO in 2000. "We started as a niche insurance company; it was built by people who love cars and it was built for people who love cars," said Warnes, a 15-year employee. "We have grown now in 40 years to insure about 2.4 million vehicles and we are a community and hub for millions of classic car lovers." From its insurance beginnings, Hagerty's magazine, the company reports, has 815,000 print subscribers and a "robust" online presence with social media channels. Hagerty is also the "steward" for multiple automotive events. The brand's most recent offering is Marketplace where consumers can buy and sell vehicles. Live auctions are also held via Hagerty's relationship with Broad Arrow Auctions. The company also owns the Greenwich Concours d'Elégance, Concours d'Elegance of America and the Amelia Island Concours d'Elegance. It also established MotorsportReg.com and Hagerty Garage. The magazine's success has prompted substantially increased public brand awareness. The publication debuted nearly 25 years ago, but it was renamed Hagerty Drivers Club Magazine in 2020 and it's part of member benefits. It's also available as a stand-alone subscription. Published six times per year, the country's largest automotive publication has a lifestyle slant. It's largely absent of engine performance nuances, gear ratio analyses and other automotive complexities. Columnists include renowned collector and entertainer Jay Leno and Wayne Carini, the car restorer and television personality whose prominence arrived with the 2008 debut of the documentary series "Chasing Classic Cars." Warnes' responsibilities encompass marketing the Hagerty brand. The company's approach is far removed from heavy-handedness. "We are not trying to hit people over the head with direct marketing or product all the time," she said. "I think that really great brands can create really compelling content that people enjoy seeing and that bring a smile to their face, that puts a tear in their eyes and that sort of connects with them on an emotional level." Recent article headlines provide ideal examples: "Tattoo artist's '56 Bel Air Sport Sedan is a rolling marquee," "This restored 1969 Ford Torino is staying in the family," and "Blind at 58, one man chose to keep loving life—and his classic Plymouth." Hagerty's year-long anniversary campaign includes a television commercial, broadcast on various networks, titled "Keepers of the Flame." It's "to signal to the automotive world that Hagerty has 'plenty left in the tank' for the next 40 years." What vehicles qualify is subjective. The Warnes sold their Yugos when they moved and downsized their garage space. They no longer own a classic, but may have a future purchase. Tarra Warnes drives a red Volkswagen Jetta turbo diesel wagon. But she desires a car from her childhood, a station wagon from the mid-1980s or a minivan from the early 1990s.

His extraordinary knowledge of not just the cars but the people involved, is legendary. He can recall the names of every driver in a certain race, what happened and why. As someone that can't remember my own last race, it always blows me away! But the story of Bills obsession and passion for cars and racing goes back to his extensive career as a top motorsports photographer and writer for Road & Track magazine since 1971 and has images on his walls that show he really was there, right in the heart of the action. Several thousand Porsche lovers made the trek to the Porsche Club of America's Werks Reunion that was held as a companion event to the pandemic-rescheduled Amelia Island Concours d'Elegance in mid-May. Porsches from the early 1950s to the present were on display. Many were stock with rare options and others were modified, but they were all primped, polished, for judging. However many people made the journey, many more Porsche fans couldn't make it, and this seminar is for them. We'll talk about the cars that we found to be the stand-outs at Werks Reunion, why we liked them, and how the market values them. Tim Suddard grew up the son and grandson of a Ford dealer. He began restoring cars at the age of 14 and still has the first car he restored, a 1929 Ford that his grandfather had sold brand new.  Shortly after graduating from Stetson University he decided that America’s car magazines focused too much on the wealthiest few, so he started Grassroots Motorsports, a magazine geared towards regular people who enjoyed fixing up and playing with common, readily available sports cars. This success lead to the formation of a second publication; Classic Motorsports, which has become America’s largest publication catering to classic sports car enthusiasts. These publications led to an events business, that includes hosting the Classic Motorsports Mitty, one of the oldest and largest vintage races in America, the Ultimate Track Car Challenge and the $201X Challenge series of low cost events; that have run for the last ten years. Tim does a variety of contract publishing work that includes publication of the Amelia Island Concours program, the World Challenge fan guide and other concours and race event programs. He maintains, rallies and races a collection of about fifteen eclectic, mostly British, sports cars and has restored over 40 cars since that first Model A.
