Ford Motor Co. recently showed off the latest iteration of its large Expedition SUV in Louisville. Was the reveal a sign of confidence for the automaker? After all, it gave the company a chance to boast about its high level of domestic production — something important in the wake of a trade war. We chat about that as well as the auto industry overall on this week's episode of the Access Louisville podcast. Let's face it, this event may have just been a good reason for Ford executives to come to Louisville on Derby Week. The new 2025 Ford Expedition is rolling off the line at the Kentucky Truck Plant in Louisville after the company invested $500 million at the facility. The reveal took place on Wednesday, April 30, and included a visit from Ford CEO Jim Farley as our partners at WDRB News reported. He spoke about the auto industry reactions on tariffs as well as the economy as a whole. The price for the new SUV ranges anywhere from $62,000 to $100,000, by the way.  After the automotive talk, we switch gears to talk about the Kentucky Derby. Reporter Michael L. Jones has covered a couple of Kentucky Derby related stories in the run-up to the big event, including a conversation with George Zambelli of the Zambelli fireworks family. Obviously, this was a rough year for the company after a huge flood in April canceled Thunder Over Louisville.“I always wondered what it would be like if there was no Thunder, and unfortunately, we got to see what it was like,” Zambelli told Jones. “It's certainly an economic impact on the city. So, maybe this is a good wake-up call to say, ‘Hey, let's be supportive of this.'"We also talk about the Belle of Louisville being scratched from the Great Steamboat Race and Jones' recent visit to Kern's Kitchen, makers of the famous Derby Pie.Access Louisville, sponsored by Baird, is a weekly podcast from Louisville Business First. Plus, Ford is closing regionals centers for stocking and distributing EVs and OpenAI has released its latest model, ChatGPT 4.5.Show Notes with links:The U.S. will impose an additional 10% tariff on Chinese imports next week, doubling the 10% duty placed earlier this month. President Trump also confirmed 25% tariffs on Mexican and Canadian goods will take effect March 4, citing a lack of progress in combating fentanyl smuggling. The Mexico and Canada tariffs were previously delayed for 30 days, but Trump says no further reprieve will be granted.China has retaliated against previous U.S. tariffs and is expected to do so again.Beijing has not made an offer to curb fentanyl-related exports, which Trump's administration sees as key to lifting tariffs.Xi Jinping seeks a broader trade agreement but has yet to propose terms that would satisfy the White House.Ford Motor Co. is scrapping its plan to stock and distribute electric vehicles (EVs) through regional inventory hubs, a pilot initiative that faced resistance from dealers. The automaker initially aimed to store unsold EVs at 21 “rapid replenishment centers” across the U.S., delivering them to dealerships within two weeks of a customer order. However, slow adoption and logistical issues prompted Ford to revert to a traditional wholesale model.Dealer resistance played a key role, as the separate sales process made EV inventory less visible to consumers.Inventory visibility issues meant unsold vehicles weren't listed on dealer websites or third-party marketplaces like Cars.com.Dealer complaints included a lack of window stickers and limited trim/package comparisons, making it harder to sell EVs effectively.Ford executive Mike O'Brien stated: “We think the pilot, from an operational perspective, was a big success. That being said, we listen to our dealers. It is a little tricky to have two different [sales] methodologies.”OpenAI has officially launched GPT-4.5, its largest and most knowledgeable model yet, though it falls short of being a frontier model. The new system improves upon GPT-4's computational efficiency by 10x and reduces hallucinations, but its performance lags behind OpenAI's latest o1 and o3-mini models.Trained with synthetic data, GPT-4.5 uses OpenAI's new supervision techniques alongside traditional fine-tuning and reinforcement learning. It will be exclusive to ChatGPT Pro users, at least initially.OpenAI CEO Sam Altman hinted at GPT-5 arriving as soon as late May, integrating the new o3 reasoning model.Hosts: Paul J Daly and Kyle MountsierGet the Daily Push Back email at https://www.asotu.com/ JOIN the conversation on LinkedIn at: https://www.linkedin.com/company/asotu/ Read our most recent email at: https://www.asotu.com/media/push-back-email

It's the last Friday of the month as we pay tribute to a Ford leader who broke the mold. We also talk about a hot debate over legacy OEMs flirting with DTC models as well as consumer luxury purchases going on the rise. This morning we pay tribute to Don Petersen, a transformative leader who guided Ford through a critical phase in the 1980s.Petersen, who passed away at 97 on Wednesday was at his home near Detroit in Bloomfield Hills, Mich., his niece Laura Peterson told Automotive News in an email., was celebrated for prioritizing quality and innovation, dramatically boosting Ford's market share and profitability.Under his leadership, Ford introduced influential designs like the aerodynamic Taurus and Mercury Sable, shifting industry standards towards more customer-focused products. He was known for fostering a collaborative workplace, which contrasted sharply with the autocratic styles of previous Ford executives. But at times was also said to have had some passionate outbursts. Petersen also spearheaded strategic acquisitions, notably purchasing a controlling stake in Hertz and increasing Ford's investment in Mazda, which significantly expanded Ford's global footprint and technological capabilities."He insisted on teamwork and excellence in the name of customers and guided Ford through a period of revitalization," stated Ford Motor Co.A recent Automotive News editorial is highliging a hot topic we'll be discussing with the President's of NADA and several State ATA's on the main stage at ASOTU CON. Dealer associations are lobbying against direct sales models for new brands like VW Group's Scout and Honda's Afeela, pushing for adherence to traditional franchise systems amidst a slowdown in EV market growth.Tensions rise as dealers threaten to withhold service and parts for brands pursuing direct sales, fearing the impacts on their business model and the established relationships with legacy automakers. The advertisement by state dealer associations in Automotive News underscores a significant industry rift, as they urge legacy automakers to reconsider direct sales strategies that could bypass traditional dealerships."We believe there is a difference between a brand recently born and one seeded, nourished and grown under the protective arm of a legacy automaker," emphasizes the importance of maintaining traditional retail models for established brands.Despite economic inflation, the U.S. luxury goods market has seen a substantial 86% increase in purchase intent from 2021 to 2024, according to YouGov's latest survey. The survey reveals that 26% of respondents are likely to buy luxury items within the next year, a significant rise from 14% three years prior.Notably, 15% of Americans have actually purchased luxury goods over the past year, marking a 9% increase since 2021, with shoes, accessories, and beauty products leading the purchase categories.Shoppers between 35-44 were willing to shell out over $1,000 on their coveted purchases.Hosts: Paul J Daly and Kyle MountsierGet the Daily Push Back email at https://www.asotu.com/ JOIN the conversation on LinkedIn at: https://www.linkedin.com/company/asotu/ Read our most recent email at: https://www.asotu.com/media/push-back-email

Welcome back to the pod Michael Wood, whose dogs are as excited about this show as we are! Today we are looking at the road trip Jim Farley is about to embark on, how customers perceive automakers and dealers, and a car going under the microscope…er, x-ray machine!Show Notes with links:Ford Motor Co. CEO Jim Farley is embarking on a nation-wide "engagement tour" with dealers to discuss key issues including electrification, quality, and affordability. Starting in Dearborn and visiting cities like Los Angeles and Atlanta, the tour aims to gather insights directly from a broad section of Ford's dealer network through 12 in-person meetings.Farley, responding to the Ford National Dealer Council's request, aims to understand dealer perspectives on industry challenges, regulatory compliance, EV transitions, and competition. They plan to invite retailers of all sizes, including some who didn't sign up to sell EVs.Joining Farley will be COO Kumar Galhotra, CMO Lisa Materazzo, Ford Model e COO Marin Gjaja, Ford Blue President Andrew Frick and Ford Pro CEO Ted Cannis.“Our quality has gone down as much as our prices have gone up. That has to be addressed.” said O.C. Welch, dealer principal at O.C. Welch Ford-Lincoln in Hardeeville, S.C.Eddie Hall III, COO of Hall Automotive Group said, "I'm used to being a brand for the masses. While I think we have a phenomenal lineup, I still want to be able to sell vehicles to the customers I have been selling to for so long."Customer satisfaction with dealer services sees a slight improvement in 2024, but parts and labor shortages continue to stretch appointment wait times, as per the latest J.D. Power CSI Study.Average wait time for an appointment has risen, with mass market vehicle owners facing a 5.2-day wait, up from 4.8 days in 2023.Costs for dealer visits have jumped 30% in the past two years due to inflation and rising parts and labor costs.Lexus ranks highest in satisfaction with dealer service among premium brands for a third consecutive year, with a score of 897.Buick ranks highest in satisfaction with dealer service among mass market brands with a score of 887. MINI (884) ranks second and Subaru (877) ranks third.Mercedes-Benz, in a pioneering collaboration with the Fraunhofer-Institute for High-Speed Dynamics, conducted the world's first X-ray crash test. This breakthrough method, utilizing a linear accelerator as an X-ray camera, captured internal car and dummy deformations during a collision at 60 km/h, offering unprecedented insights into the dynamics of vehicular crashes. The use of high-speed X-ray technology enabled the precise visualization of internal processes, making previously invisible deformations transparent for detailed analysis. The crash test dummy used was a female version, as females are at much higher risk of serious injuries during crashes.Hosts: Paul J Daly and Kyle MountsierGet the Daily Push Back email at https://www.asotu.com/ JOIN the conversation on LinkedIn at: https://www.linkedin.com/company/asotu/ Read our most recent email at: https://www.asotu.com/media/push-back-email ASOTU Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/automotivestateoftheunion

Today we welcome special guest host Todd Caputo to talk about the resilience of physical standalone used car models as well as some big price adjustments from Ford on their Mach EShow Notes with links:It's appropriate that our Charlotte, NC based guest Todd is our guest host today to celebrate on this day in 1948, NASCAR was founded by William "Bill" France Sr. Bill was a race-loving mechanic who moved to Daytona Beach, and saw much corruption amongst disjointed race promoters who would run off with prize money so he initiated NASCAR to standardize racing rules and ensure fair competition, serving as its first president and significantly influencing its growth to become a major American spectator sport and a multi-billion-dollar industry.Ford Motor Co. has significantly reduced the prices of the 2023 Mustang Mach-E, slashing costs by $3,100 to $8,100 across different models to enhance its competitiveness against Tesla. The price reduction is coupled with attractive financing offers, including 0% financing for 72 months for qualified buyers and a $7,500 cash incentive on leased vehicles, aiming to clear the path for the 2024 modelThe Mustang Mach-E is second to the Tesla Model Y in US sales. Despite not qualifying for the $7,500 federal tax credit,Ford CEO Jim Farley emphasized the need for affordable electric vehicles in the competitive market, with Ford developing a smaller, more affordable electric vehicle. "We are adjusting pricing," said Ford spokesperson Marty Gunsberg, highlighting the company's strategy to adapt to market dynamics and prioritize customer value.Despite the turbulent automotive market, some standalone used-car stores like Sonic Automotive's EchoPark have navigated through volatility with strategic adjustments, such as reducing store footprints to improve inventory allocation and sales. The industry has seen a shift from ecommerce platforms like Vroom, Shift, Carlotz, and Carvana to physical used-car outlets, emphasizing the resilience and adaptability of these business models to market dynamics.Sonic Automotive and other major players, such as AutoNation and Penske, have integrated additional services like F&I and repair to create synergies with their used-car operations, enhancing customer value and operational efficiency."Reducing our store footprint...allowed us to better allocate inventory across the platform," noted David Smith, Sonic's CEO, illustrating a strategic pivot towards a more focused and efficient operational model to weather the fluctuating used-car market.Hosts: Paul J Daly and Kyle MountsierGet the Daily Push Back email at https://www.asotu.com/ JOIN the conversation on LinkedIn at: https://www.linkedin.com/company/asotu/ Read our most recent email at: https://www.asotu.com/media/push-back-email ASOTU Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/automotivestateoftheunion

It's a beautiful new week as we delve into the U.S. auto market's resilience amidst pricing pressures. We also talk about the stabilization of wholesale vehicle prices, and German rental car company Sixt's strategic shift away from Tesla to BYD for its rental fleet.Show Notes with links:U.S. auto sales in November rose by about 9%, with significant gains for brands like American Honda, Volvo, and Toyota, amidst ongoing inventory rebuilds. However, analysts caution about the market's future, noting potential impacts of pricing and interest rates, especially as fleet sales decline and car share reaches near-record lows."We're going to run a 15.5 SAAR this year, which is pretty freaking healthy... But going into '24, there's no question we're going to have to be more aggressive on our incentive spending to work on that affordability issue." - Andrew Gilleland, Senior VP, Toyota Motor North America.Affordability concerns loom, with expectations of more aggressive incentive spending in 2024 as automakers adapt to shifting market conditions and consumer preferences. The YoY growth: American Honda: +33%, Volvo: +26% Toyota Motor North America: +17% Hyundai: +11% Kia: +3%Ford Motor Co. was the only reporting automaker whose sales declined in November, falling by 0.4%.After a wild 2023, there may be hope for smoother sailing in 2024 according to some analysts, as the industry adjusts to post-strike market conditions.Manheim Used Vehicle Value Index reports a 2.1% month-over-month and 5.8% year-over-year decline in wholesale values, suggesting a move towards stability.Cox Automotive senior manager of economic and industry insights Chris Frey noted they predict a 4% year-over-year decline by December 2023, and foresee less volatility in 2024.Significant price drops observed in various vehicle categories, including compact cars (-11.3%) and luxury vehicles (-6.3%), as the market adjusts post-UAW strike.Black Book's Used Vehicle Retention Index also shows a decline, reflecting a correction phase in the used vehicle market, with improved auction conversion rates.Major German rental car company, Sixt, is saying goodbye to its Tesla fleet, citing high repair costs and plunging residual values, while shifting focus to more sustainable and cost-effective options.Sixt, announces plans to phase out Tesla EVs from its fleet, deeply impacted by Tesla's price cuts and resulting depreciation.Unlike Hertz, which is cautiously stepping back from EVs, Sixt is keen on expanding its electric fleet, aiming for 90% electric vehicles by decade's end.The company is pivoting to Chinese EVs from BYD, citing lower costs and easier repairs, with a commitment to purchase 100,000 BYD electric cars.Sixt was the first rental car company to ever partner with BYDHosts: Paul J Daly and Kyle MountsierGet the Daily Push Back email at https://www.asotu.com/ JOIN the conversation on LinkedIn at: https://www.linkedin.com/company/asotu/ Read our most recent email at: https://www.asotu.com/media/push-back-email ASOTU Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/automotivestateoftheunion

In the meantime, standard container rates on transpacific routes are quadruple what they were a year ago. And that is before equipment surcharges and premiums for guaranteed loading are added. “Anyone paying the freight bills in 2020 though knows the true cost of shipping is much higher than even the recently increased rates,” Poskus said. “We expect that to only increase in 2021.” The unstoppable rise in container shipping costs is borne out by December figures recently announced by Taiwan's three major shipping companies — Evergreen Marine Corp, Yang Ming Marine Transport Corp and Wan Hai Lines Ltd — which saw a record-breaking year-on-year surge of revenue at 58.8 percent, 35.19 percent and 75.71 percent respectively. Source article: https://www.taipeitimes.com/News/lang/archives/2021/01/18/2003750759 Next Article Topic: The world is dependent on Taiwan for semiconductors As China pushes the world to avoid official dealings with Taiwan, leaders across the globe are realizing just how dependent they have become on the island democracy. Taiwan is being courted for its capacity to make leading-edge computer chips. That is mostly down to Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co (TSMC), the world's largest foundry and go-to producer of chips for Apple Inc smartphones, artificial intelligence and high-performance computing. Taiwan's role in the world economy largely existed below the radar until it came to recent prominence as the auto industry suffered shortfalls in chips used for everything from parking sensors to reducing emissions. With carmakers including Germany's Volkswagen AG, Ford Motor Co of the US and Japan's Toyota Motor Corp forced to halt production and idle plants, Taiwan's importance has suddenly become too big to ignore. That is not to say Taiwan is the only player in the semiconductor supply chain. The US still holds dominant positions, notably in chip design and electronic software tools; ASML Holding NV of the Netherlands has a monopoly on the machines needed to fabricate the best chips; Japan is a key supplier of equipment, chemicals and wafers. However, as the emphasis shifts to ever smaller, more powerful chips that require less energy, TSMC is increasingly in a field of its own. It has also helped Taiwan form a comprehensive ecosystem around it: ASE Technology Holding is the world's top chip assembler, while MediaTek has become the largest smartphone chipset vendor. A big worry is that TSMC's chip factories could become collateral damage if China were to make good on threats to invade Taiwan if it moves toward independence. “Taiwan is the center of gravity of Chinese security policy,” said Mathieu Duchatel, director of the Asia program at the Institut Montaigne in Paris. Preserving the world's most advanced fabs “is in the interests of everyone.” Source article: https://www.taipeitimes.com/News/lang/archives/2021/02/01/2003751534 Next Article Topic: Reinventing Workers for the Post-COVID Economy The nation's economic recovery from the COVID-19 pandemic will hinge to some extent on how quickly show managers can become electricians, whether taxi drivers can become plumbers, and how many cooks can manage software for a bank. This is likely to prove especially problematic for millions of low-paid workers in service industries like retailing, hospitality, building maintenance and transportation, which may be permanently impaired or fundamentally transformed. What will janitors do if fewer people work in offices? What will waiters do if the urban restaurant ecosystem never recovers its density? Their prognosis is bleak. Marcela Escobari, an economist at the Brookings Institution, warns that even if the economy adds jobs as the coronavirus risk fades, “the rebound won't help the people that have been hurt the most.” Looking back over 16 years of data, Escobari finds that workers in the occupations most heavily hit since the spring will have a difficult time reinventing themselves. Taxi drivers, dancers and front-desk clerks have poor track records moving to jobs as, say, registered nurses, pipe layers or instrumentation technicians. COVID is abruptly taking out a swath of jobs that were thought to be comparatively resilient, in services that require personal contact with customers. And the jolt has landed squarely on workers with little or no education beyond high school, toiling in the low-wage service economy. “The damage to the economy and particularly to workers will probably be longer lasting than we think it is going to be,” said Peter Beard, senior vice president at the Greater Houston Partnership, an economic development group. What's more, he said, COVID will intensify underlying dynamics that were already transforming the workplace. Automation, for one, will most likely accelerate as employers seek to protect their businesses from future pandemics. The challenge is not insurmountable. Yet despite scattered success stories, moving millions of workers into new occupations remains an enormous challenge. “We need a New Deal for skills,” said Amit Sevak, president of Revature, a company that hires workers, trains them to use digital tools and helps place them in jobs. “President Roosevelt deployed the massive number of workers unemployed in the Great Depression on projects that created many of the dams and roads and bridges we have. We need something like that.”

On this day in legal history, on October 26, 1916, feminist and birth control activist Margaret Sanger was arrested for her pioneering efforts in promoting and distributing birth control information in the United States. Just days prior, on October 16, 1916, Sanger had opened the nation's first birth control clinic in Brooklyn, New York. This clinic, known as the Brownsville Clinic, aimed to provide women with information on contraception and family planning, both of which were highly controversial topics at the time.Sanger's arrest came as a result of violating the Comstock Laws. By way of very brief background, the Comstock Laws were a set of federal and state statutes in the United States in the late 19th and early 20th centuries aimed at suppressing and regulating what was considered obscene or immoral materials. They were named after Anthony Comstock, a social reformer and secretary of the New York Society for the Suppression of Vice, who lobbied for stricter regulations on materials he deemed indecent. The laws were primarily focused on issues related to obscenity, contraception, and abortion. Shifting our focus back to Sanger and the Brownsville clinic, the clinic was quickly shut down, and Sanger faced charges for her actions. This arrest and subsequent trial were pivotal moments in the history of the birth control movement in the United States, ultimately leading to increased awareness and acceptance of contraception as a fundamental aspect of women's reproductive rights. Margaret Sanger's advocacy laid the groundwork for the eventual legalization of birth control. The United Auto Workers (UAW) has reached a tentative labor agreement with Ford Motor Co., potentially ending a prolonged strike that has been costly for the automotive industry. Ford has agreed to a record 25% hourly wage increase over the four-year contract, and with cost-of-living allowances, the top wage rate is expected to increase by 33%, exceeding $40 an hour. Ford, the automaker with the largest UAW workforce among Detroit's "Big Three," was the first to offer a counter-proposal and has now become the first to settle. UAW leadership will vote on the deal on October 29, followed by ratification by Ford's 57,000 U.S. hourly workers, a process that may take several weeks. The strike had revolved around various issues, with pay being one of the last points of contention. The UAW had initially sought a 40% raise and a 32-hour work week but scaled back its demands. Ford had already agreed to cost-of-living allowances, converting temporary hires to full-time positions, and expediting the time it takes for workers to reach the top wage rate.Details about wages and benefits at battery plants were not included in the initial announcement. It remains unclear if the agreement covers Ford's four battery plants under construction. The strike, which began on September 15, grew to involve more than 45,000 workers at eight assembly plants and 38 parts-distribution facilities. General Motors and Stellantis will meet with the UAW, with hopes that they will agree to similar terms. The UAW urged Ford workers to return to work during the ratification process to keep pressure on the other two automakers. GM and Stellantis have expressed their commitment to reaching agreements as soon as possible.Ford Agrees to 25% Wage Hike in Tentative Deal to End UAW StrikeThe National Labor Relations Board (NLRB) has introduced a new final rule that makes it easier for multiple companies to be considered joint employers, sharing liability for labor law violations and legal obligations to engage with unions. This rule replaces a regulation put in place less than four years ago, which had made it more difficult for companies to be classified as joint employers. The determination of joint employment status, whether through regulations or case law, has been a subject of contentious debate over the past decade. This new rule broadens the criteria for establishing joint employment, extending beyond situations where one business directly controls the most critical aspects of a worker's job.The updated test now considers indirect and unexercised control as well. This means that if a company exerts influence over another company's workers through an intermediary or holds contractual authority over employment terms, even if that authority is never exercised, it can be considered evidence of a joint employer relationship. This change in the joint employer test has significant implications for industries like franchising, where independently owned franchise locations might have to negotiate with unions if both the franchisor and the franchisee are deemed joint employers of unionized workers.New Labor Board Joint Employer Test Replaces Pro-Business RuleThe National Conference of Bar Examiners (NCBE) has announced that the current version of the bar exam will continue to be available until February 2028, extending beyond the previously planned retirement date of July 2027. In addition to the existing Uniform Bar Exam, the NCBE will introduce a new Next Gen Bar Exam in July 2026. During the two-year overlap, states will have the option to choose between the two exams before the uniform exam is phased out, leaving the next-gen version as the sole option. The decision of which bar exam to use will be made by individual state courts, bar associations, or law examiners. The extension was prompted by feedback from some courts, which expressed the need for more time to transition to the new exam and to provide law schools with ample notice regarding which test their graduates would take. The Next Gen Bar Exam is designed to emphasize legal skills and reduce the reliance on memorizing laws. As of now, no jurisdiction has committed to using the next-gen exam upon its debut in July 2026. It's Tuesday and we're all in on the ups and downs of the day as we talk about Bill Ford's entry to the UAW strike conversation. We also talk about Hawaii's very effective campaign to curb catalytic converter theft, as well as the new Netflix experience centers that take a page out of Disney's playbookA new player has stepped out of the locker room in the ongoing UAW strike negotiations yesterday, as Bill Ford, Executive Chair of Ford Motor Co., publicly urged UAW leaders to end their month-long strike. Bill Ford has participated in every union negotiation since 1982 and said he is the most “pro-union leader in the industry.”Addressing the press from Ford's historic Rouge Complex in Dearborn, Mich, Ford said, "Choosing the right path is not just about Ford's future and our ability to compete. This is about the future of the American automobile industry. Toyota, Honda, Tesla and others are loving this strike because they know the longer it goes on, the better it is for them. They will win, and all of us will lose."UAW President Shawn Fain was quick to respond,, ““Bill Ford knows exactly how to settle this strike. ... He should call up Jim Farley, tell him to stop playing games and get a deal done. It's not the UAW and Ford against foreign automakers. It's autoworkers everywhere against corporate greed. If Ford wants to be the all-American auto company, they can pay all-American wages and benefits. Workers at Tesla, Toyota, Honda, and others are not the enemy — they're the UAW members of the future."As a side note, he has recently been photographed wearing a shirt that says, “Eat the rich.”Hawaii has seen a significant reduction in catalytic converter thefts after implementing a law that regulates their sale. A combination of legislation and practical implementation has led to a stark drop in thefts over the last year.Catalytic converters, which can fetch up to $1,500 at scrapyards, are commonly stolen in many states and now, Hawaii's law requires individuals selling catalytic converters to present photo ID and sign a declaration that the part wasn't stolen.Mark Yamauchi, the owner of Yama's Auto Care in Hawaii, commented on the significant decline in catalytic converter thefts following the implementation of new laws in the state. He stated, “I did maybe a couple this year. Before, I would do at least two or three a month.” Thefts dropped from over 1,600 in 2022 to just 119 in 2023. Following in the footsteps of entertainment giants like Disney, Netflix is set to launch "Netflix House" locations by 2025. Today we talk about how excited we are for the second year of ASOTU CON, one OEM pulling back on EVs and another pushing forward.Show Notes with links:Ford Motor Co. has halted construction on its $3.5 billion electric vehicle battery plant in Marshall, Mich. until ‘until we're confident about our ability to competitively operate the plant.'  The UAW criticized the move, calling it a "shameful, barely-veiled threat" to cut jobs during tense contract negotiations.Ford's spokesperson, T.R. Reid, mentioned they are pausing to ensure their ability to operate the plant competitively and haven't finalized decisions on the planned investment.Originally scheduled to open in 2026, the BlueOval Battery Park Michigan plant is expected to employ 2,500 workers, producing batteries to power approximately 400,000 EVs.Nissan announced that all of its new models in Europe will be fully electric and it plans to sell only EVs in Europe by the year 2030.Nissan announced its intention to exclusively sell EVs  in Europe by 2030. The day we have all been waiting for. Tonight we launch ASOTU CON, but this morning we still have the UAW to check in on, dealers seeing the EV tax incentives in a new but old light, and Spotify testing some voice replication features! The UAW strike has expanded to include 38 GM and Stellantis parts distribution centers across 20 states, affecting the dealerships' service business, however, talks with Ford have seemingly made good progressThis action highlights the issue of wage disparities. Parts depot employees typically earn between $16-$24 an hour, compared to up to $32 at assembly plants.Eric Ray, a worker at GM's Ypsilanti Processing Center, stated: "We do just as much work as they do in the automotive plants. We do the same thing, we should be treated the same way."UAW President Shawn Fain is committed to eliminating varying wage rates, emphasizing that "The PDCs in particular, they've been stepped on a lot in the past."Notably, UAW made "real progress" in negotiations with Ford Motor Co., choosing not to add any Ford plants to the targeted strike, highlighting Ford's willingness to address key union prioritiesHarkening back to the time of Cash for Clunkers, some dealers fear that EV tax incentives may take a long time to come through.Beginning in 2024, eligible EV buyers can transfer federal tax credits to dealers, using these funds as a down payment. The move is part of the Inflation Reduction Act's provisions to support new and used EV purchases.Tyler Slade, operating partner at Tim Dahle Nissan Southtowne, expressed nervousness, citing history and concerns about waiting for government reimbursement: "You're going to have plenty of dealers that aren't going to be comfortable with that risk … waiting for the government to pay, much like Cash for Clunkers."Organizations like AIADA and NADA are actively working to streamline the point-of-sale transaction and ensure swift and accurate reimbursement from the government to avoid the issues faced during the Cash for Clunkers program.Spotify is launching a new beta test that will take the voice of a few select podcasters and translate them to other languages using AI.The innovative tool is initially translating podcasts into Spanish and French, with German translations in the pipeline. It not only translates the podcast into different languages but also synthesizes it in the podcaster's own voice, providing a genuine and immersive listening experience for global audiences.Concerns about safety and privacy have led to a measured release of this technology. Spotify and OpenAI are currently limiting the availability of this tool, testing it with a select group of podcasters, ensuring it meets standards and expectations while safeguarding users' privacy and information.Hosts: Paul J Daly and Kyle MountsierGet the Daily Push Back email at https://www.asotu.com/ JOIN the conversation on LinkedIn at: https://www.linkedin.com/company/asotu/ Read our most recent email at: https://www.asotu.com/media/push-back-email ASOTU Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/automotivestateoftheunion

Welcome to Wednesday as we take another step down the auto row and summarize the last 24 hours of action in the UAW negotiations. We also talk about the latest Reputation report for Dealers, as well as diving into the sizable gap between how marketers think vs the general consumer. UAW Update:Unifor and Ford Motor Co. of Canada reached a last-minute tentative labor agreement, preventing a second union walkout in North America and the first in Canada against Ford in 33 years.Ford released a statement rebutting many of Shawn Fain's primary campaigning points:Fain said CEO pay was up 40%, but Ford contends he lumped all CEO pay together and Farley's pay was only up 21%...below what their current offer on the table is for hourly workersFain criticized stock buybacks, alleging they were up 1,500 percent over the past four years, while Ford pointed out they had only bought back shares twice, and at a lower volume than General Motors, primarily to offset dilution from pay and debtFain argued that the Detroit 3 CEOs made their millions by exploiting workers at "poverty wages, while Ford pointed out that current hourly employees are among the best-paid manufacturing workers in the country, with an average annualized compensation of $112,000, including wages and benefits. Their most recent offer would bring this average up to $133,000 in total compensation, including $92,000 in cash alone. The 2023 Automotive Reputation Report shows an 11% YoY increase in dealership reviews, reaching a three-year peak.84% of consumers consider reviews crucial for their dealership choices, with 74% requiring at least a 4-star rating; 62% read more than five reviews, and 63% would travel over 20 miles for a well-reviewed dealership.Infiniti and Mitsubishi topped the luxury and non-luxury brand rankings respectively, with AutoNation leading public dealer groups and Infiniti of Nashua being the top-rated dealership.A recent study commissioned by iHeartMedia and Pushkin Industries, co-founded by best-selling author and thought leader Malcolm Gladwell, spotlights significant discrepancies between consumer and marketer awareness and values. This gap is potentially leading to marketing campaigns that misalign with consumer interests.Notably, while every marketer knew about NFTs, only 60% of consumers did.A striking 50% of consumers were unfamiliar with the trending cocktail Aperol Spritz, compared to a mere 3% of marketers. The gap further extends to popular culture, with 62% of consumers unaware of the HBO show “Succession”, while less than 5% of marketers were.31% of consumers were unfamiliar with pickleball, but all marketers knew of itHosts: Paul J Daly and Kyle MountsierGet the Daily Push Back email at https://www.asotu.com/ JOIN the conversation on LinkedIn at: https://www.linkedin.com/company/asotu/ Read our most recent email at: https://www.asotu.com/media/push-back-email ASOTU Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/automotivestateoftheunion

Friday is coming to a full stop at some OEM plants but not here as we cover the UAW's historic strike. We're also talking about the growing cool-competition to Tesla, as well as the possible effects of trendy swag on traditional retail. Show Notes with links:Nearly 13,000 hourly workers began a strike against Ford Motor Co., General Motors, and Chrysler (Stellantis). This is the first simultaneous strike against all three automakers in UAW's 88-year history. When UAW President Shawn Fain arrived to announce the strike, he appeared outside the Michigan Assembly Plant, located west of Detroit, shortly after midnight. The scene was marked by a heightened sense of unity and emotion as Fain was described as being jubilant, smiling, leading chants, and actively participating in the gathering. The strike will halt the production of high-demand vehicles such as the Ford Bronco, Jeep Wrangler, and Chevrolet ColoradoGM: Expressed disappointment in UAW leadership actions despite GM's "unprecedented economic package."Ford indicated the union's counterproposal showed little movement from initial demands.Stellantis expressed disappointment in UAW's refusal to engage responsibly and took protective measures for its operations.Amid increasing competition in the EV market, Tesla's once-dominant position is being challenged. As major automakers unveil diverse electric models, industry experts discuss the shifting landscape, Tesla's unique sales approach, and the broader issue of EV affordability at the 2023 Automotive News Congress in Detroit.Diane Maher, president and chief operating officer of Michigan-based Fox Motors: “Now there are other cool kids, So, Tesla is not the only game in town. America loves a choice.”Damon Lester, owner of the Maryland-based Lester Auto Group: “Tesla has done a good job capitalizing its market share. People will see other EVs on the road and say, ‘That's a cool car – and it's not a Tesla.'”The Punchline: The Stellantis plant in Ohio is the only one among three plants that manufactures an electrified vehicle, the Wrangler 4xe plug-in hybrid Jeep. Costco's private label, Kirkland Signature, originally introduced in 1995, has evolved from a household essential into an unexpected fashion sensation. Its original private label strategy was spread across 30 different labels but have since been consolidated into one, improving consistency, lowering costs, and offering competitive prices. With $58B in sales in 2021 racking up over a quarter of the company's total revenue making it America's largest consumer packaged goods brand in terms of salesHosts: Paul J Daly and Kyle MountsierGet the Daily Push Back email at https://www.asotu.com/ JOIN the conversation on LinkedIn at: https://www.linkedin.com/company/asotu/ Read our most recent email at: https://www.asotu.com/media/push-back-email ASOTU Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/automotivestateoftheunion
