The reason torpedo bats are a thing is because they are not called bowling pin bats. Patti catches you up on all things torpedo. It seems like all the cool kids are getting contact extensions and we float a few more contenders. Pottymouth wants to complete her Walker set and Patti just wants a complete infield. Profar is a deep disappointment, and Ian Happ is still making us coffee 1000 games later. It's that episode where we make our terrible predictions but we can't not. It's Thursday, February 6th, A.D. 2025. This is The Worldview in 5 Minutes heard on 125 radio stations and at www.TheWorldview.com. I'm Adam McManus. (Adam@TheWorldview.com) By Jonathan Clark Gunmen shot and killed pastor during Sunday church service Gunmen, affiliated with a cult group targeting Christian communities, shot and killed a 54-year-old pastor in Nigeria, Africa on January 19th. Pastor Yomi Adetula was at a Sunday morning service when he died. A local leader told International Christian Concern, “Adetula was a man of God who dedicated himself to serving the community. We face challenges from groups that oppose spiritual efforts, and we must advocate for greater awareness and collective action to protect the rights of Christians to worship freely.” Nigeria is ranked seventh on the Open Doors' World Watch List of nations where it is most dangerous to be a Christian. Psalm 116:15 says, “Precious in the sight of the LORD is the death of His saints.” Kyrgyzstan further restricts religious liberty A law went into effect this month in Kyrgyzstan that further restricts religious freedom in the central Asian country. The new religion law bans unregistered churches as well as sharing one's faith in public. A Protestant leader told the human rights group Forum 18, “The new law does not make anything better or easier for us to practice our faith, but makes it more difficult. I have stopped believing in any improvements in the laws or in the attitude of the government towards us Christians.” Argentina withdraws from World Health Organization Argentina announced yesterday it is pulling out of the World Health Organization. Through a spokesman, President Javier Milei said, “We Argentinians will not allow an international organization to intervene in our sovereignty, much less in our health.” The move follows U.S. President Donald Trump's decision to leave the World Health Organization last month. Both countries accused the organization of mishandling health issues like the COVID-19 pandemic. Pam Bondi confirmed as U.S. Attorney General The U.S. Senate confirmed Pam Bondi as the next U.S. Attorney General. Trump's pick passed with a vote of 54-46 along party lines. Only Democrat Senator John Fetterman of Pennsylvania voted with the Republicans. Bondi previously served as Florida's Attorney General. During her confirmation hearings, Bondi called out the Biden administration for targeting Catholics, concerned parents, and pro-lifers. BONDI: “Going after parents at a school board meeting has got to stop. For practicing your religion, sending informants into Catholic churches must stop!” Trump's Executive Order: “Keeping Men out of Women's Sports” President Donald Trump signed an executive order yesterday entitled, “Keeping Men Out of Women's Sports.” As the title suggests, the order protects women from having to compete against men, pretending to be women, in sports at schools and colleges. The order coincided with National Girls and Women in Sports Day. U.S. Republican Rep. Nancy Mace of South Carolina said, “This executive order restores fairness, upholds Title IX's original intent, and defends the rights of female athletes who have worked their whole lives to compete at the highest levels.” Trump created a government-run sovereign wealth fund On Monday, President Donald Trump signed an executive order to create a government-run sovereign wealth fund. The U.S. would join other countries around the world with such an investment vehicle owned by the government. Prominent examples include Saudi Arabia's Public Investment Fund, the China Investment Corporation, and Norway's Government Pension Fund. Trump suggested a U.S. sovereign wealth fund could be used to buy the social media platform TikTok. CeCe Winans wins two Grammys And finally, CeCe Winans, a Christian singer, received two more Grammy awards over the weekend. She won “Best Gospel Album” and “Best Contemporary Christian Music Performance/Song,” bringing her number of Grammys to 17. Winans is known for her song “Goodness of God.” “And all my life You have been so, so good With every breath that I am able Oh, I will sing of the goodness of God "I love Your voice You have led me through the fire In darkest night You are close like no other I've known You as a Father I've known You as a Friend And I have lived in the goodness of God, yeah “ 'Cause all my life You have been faithful, oh yes You have And all my life You have been so, so good With every breath that I am able Oh, I will sing of the goodness of God” Winans said, “Winning a Grammy is always an incredible honor, but to be recognized for music that uplifts and inspires makes it even more special. I'm beyond grateful to God, my team, and the amazing supporters who continue to believe in the music and the message.” Colossians 3:16 says, “Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly in all wisdom, teaching and admonishing one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing with grace in your hearts to the Lord.” Close And that's The Worldview on this Thursday, February 6th, in the year of our Lord 2025. The White House announced President Donald Trump plans to sign an executive order Wednesday afternoon banning transgender women and girls from participating in female sports at schools and colleges. The order comes on National Girls and Women in Sports Day. It is still unclear what the order, titled “Keeping Men Out of Women's Sports” will entail and what its scope will be, but it will provide insight on how the Trump administration plans to interpret Title IX of the Civil Rights Act, which is best known for its role in pursuing gender equity in athletics and preventing sexual harassment on campus. Every administration has the authority to issue its own interpretations of Title IX. The Biden administration interpreted the law to include protections for LGBTQ+ students and provide new safeguards for victims of campus sexual assault, but the policy stopped short of explicitly addressing transgender athletes. Biden's policies received a lot of pushback from Republican-led states. For perspective on how this executive order could impact transgender athletes and the trans community in Minnesota, MPR News host Nina Moini talks with Representative Leigh Finke. She is the first openly transgender person to serve in the state Legislature. In 2023, she authored a bill to protect access to gender-affirming health care, making Minnesota one of the first trans refuge states in the nation.
People gathered Wednesday at the Minnesota History Center to celebrate National Girls and Women in Sports Day. Similar events across the country recognized girls and women's achievements in sports and promote equality. Among the honorees in Minnesota is Washburn High School alumnus Amy Cooper. Her list of accolades is long, beginning with her time as a Minneapolis high school athlete. She exceled in swimming, track, basketball and soccer. Then, at Howard University, she became the first soccer player for a Historically Black College and University to earn all-conference honors. She has gone on to create opportunities for other women and women of color as a coach and administrator. Today Amy Cooper works as Senior Associate Athletic Director for Administration at the University of St. Thomas. She is this year's recipient of the Wilma Rudolph Courage Award, which honors women who have overcome physical challenges in their pursuit of sports and created a path for others. She joins MPR News host Nina Moini to share her story.

Feb. 7, 2024, marks the 28th annual National Girls and Women in Sports Day, a global movement that aims to inspire and encourage young girls and women around the world to get active, play sports and break boundaries. But the barriers are real. There are societal prejudices and fewer opportunities for girls to get into sports—and even more stereotypes about Jews as un-athletic, giving young Jewish girls twice as many hurdles to overcome. Chelsey Goldberg knows those hurdles firsthand. Growing up in California, her only option to play hockey was to play in a local boys' league, eventually rising the ranks of women's hockey to play professionally in Canada and the United States. She spent years lobbying the Maccabiah Games to create a women's hockey division—a fight she won in 2022, when she became the captain for Team USA at the Maccabiah, winning silver. Goldberg joins Menschwarmers co-host James for a frank talk about the value of sports for women and girls and what the future looks like. Plus, Gabe and James take a deep dive into the keffiyeh controversy that overtook the recent NHL All-Star Game in Toronto, in which the singer of the national anthem wore a piece of clothing that vaguely resembled a keffiyeh. And we respond to a few listeners to wrote in after our last episode about Jewish NHL players. Credits Menschwarmers is hosted by James Hirsh and Gabe Pulver, and produced and edited by Michael Fraiman. Our intro music is by Coby Lipovitch, and our outro music is "Organ Grinder Swing" by chēēZ π. This show is a member of The CJN Podcast Network.
