New Orleans singer/songwriter Lynn Drury helped Rob get over his irrational Jeff Tweedy/Wilco bias and fully embrace their 1999 release, 'summerteeth'. Tweedy and multi-instrumentalist Jay Bennett combined intricate studio experimentation with pure pop to craft a wonderfully ambiguous gem of a record. Songs discussed in this episode: Thirteen - Wilco; Blue, Fade - Lynn Drury; The Palace at 4 A.M. - Jay Bennett; I Can't Stand It, She's A Jar - Wilco; Baby Do Right - Lynn Drury; A Shot In The Arm, We're Just Friends - Wilco; Mountain Girl - Blue Mountain; I'm Always In Love, Nothing'severgonnastandinmyway (Again), How To Fight Loneliness, Via Chicago, My Darling, When You Wake Up Feeling Old, In A Future Age - Wilco; High Tide - Lynn Drury
Singer-songwriter Lynn has released 10 albums since 2001. We discuss the title track (and listen at the end to "I Waited Too Long") from High Tide (2024), "11:11" from Rise of the Fall (2017), and "Drugstore" from Crossing Frequencies (2001). Today's guest reminds me to take my time. Please give a Performance Anxiety welcome to singer/songwriter, Lynn Drury. She has made New Orleans her home but she grew up in what sounds like every little girl's dream, raising and training quarter horses for the rodeo circuit in Mississippi. And she always loved music but never actually considered pursuing it professionally. That is until she was walking around New Orleans and decided she didn't want to sell computers anymore; she wanted to play guitar and sing! So that's what she did! She took lessons, played wherever she could; sometimes gigging until four in the morning and then getting up to be at work by eight. Lynn and I discover we have some things in common, like insurance. And she tells a story she's never told before about the horrors of studying abroad. Nothing good comes from insurance sales. And she has spawned an idea I may have to implement from now on: a test for each guest at the end of each episode! That way each show will have a bit of actual performance anxiety to it! Lynn has changed a few things over the years besides her profession. She's changed her writing process, her location after Katrina (but that was temporary), and styles of music over the course of ten albums. Her latest is High Tide and is out through Nolamericana music. Go pick it up wherever you get music. Check out lynndrury.com. Also check out her socials @lynndruryrocks for up to date info. Our socials are @PerformanceAnx and we'd love for you to follow us. You can also slide us a cup of coffee at ko-fi.com/performanceanxiety. You get wear us via merch at performanceanx.threadless.com. Interview with New Orleans-based singer-songwriter Lynn Drury. Lynn Drury has been performing, in one arena or another, her entire life. At the ripe old age of five she won a 4-H state competition in Mississippi in pole bending. If you don't know what pole bending is, it's alittle like barrel racing, Lynn says. That's horse talk. In a word, rodeos. Once you know that much about Lynn, you understand her approach. She picked up the guitar at 26, went at it like a pro, and she's never stopped working. Her inspiration is her environment and since the late nineties, that environment has been New Orleans. The transition for the Yazoo City-born Drury was smooth. She says jasmine smells like honeysuckle, and you believe her. Sultry, sweet songs turn funky, and it's all in the same neighborhood. https://www.lynndrury.com/

The outstanding violinist and singer with Loose Cattle, whose new record, “Heavy Lifting” was just released, comes to New Orleans by way of a Moscow birth and a Georgia upbringing. Extensive classical training underlies his mastery of the instrument, but his love of the American roots canon keeps Rurik in the nightclubs and on festival stages with a Who’s Who of regional and national acts. The Troubled Men are all vaxxed up, so they return to in-person podcasting, but with this kind of exposure, a virus should be the least of Rurik’s concerns. Topics include a new location, a naked bike ride, a cabin in the woods, frolf, quicksand, a feral dog attack, the cone of shame, an African mission, a love story, Debauche, a prom date, Loyola U., Carrollton Station, Harry Shearer, “Evita,” Lynn Drury, hippy influences, Camper Van Beethoven, a musical family, the school lottery, youth baseball, the national anthem, live gigs, city hall, and much more. The guitarist and singer’s bands include the Tin Men, the Valparaiso Men’s Chorus, Kings of the Smalltime, and the Alex Band. One of New Orleans’ premier songwriters, he’s released two original solo albums, “Lucky One” and “Road Songs,” this year, in addition to “Into the Sky” with songwriter collective the Write Brothers. Recordings with his own Royal Fingerbowl, as well as projects like 007, the Tom Paines, Susan Cowsill, Luke Spurr Allen’s Happy Talk, Lynn Drury, and the Geraniums round out his resume. Linda's was the final episode for 2018, and what pleasure to have her as a guest. In Linda's words: "Music has been at the center of my life since I can remember. Early influences include Karla Bonoff, Joan Baez, Joni Mitchell: many other female singer songwriters since then have shaped my taste in music: Lucinda Williams, Patty Griffin, Emmylou Harris, Mia Borders, Caroline Herring, Susan Cowsill, Lynn Drury, Shannon McNally, Amy Mann and Brandi Carlile. This list is actually pretty endless--I would also have to include the Beatles, the Stones, and the women of the early blues movement, such as Memphis Minnie. I write Americana music, rooted in my life experiences. Many of my songs tell stories, and they are all different; I don't want to write in just one style--I am open to a variety of music, from country to soul. In short, I am a work in progress and I hope you like what you hear. Little Queenie was released on my birthday in 2016, and No Limits, my second album, was released in October of 2017. I am currently writing and recording songs for my next record, due out in the spring of 2019. My style continues to evolve! You can hear my songs here, as well as on Seattle Wave Radio and Local Roots Music NW Radio, available for purchase on CD Baby and BandCamp." A simple but important point is made in this interview as a recurring theme throughout all; music is for everyone and although it helps, no special skills or education are required to enjoy listening to or creating your own. But as seen below, Linda is a bit of an overachiever. EDUCATION-- Writing Fellows Institute, University of Washington, Tacoma; September - June, 2009 Adjunct Faculty Institute, Tacoma Community College; January - March 2006 Summer School for Applied Aesthetics, Lahti Finland; August 18-23, 2002 The School of Criticism and Theory, Cornell University; June 20 - July 26, 2001 The School of Criticism and Theory, Dartmouth College; June 17 - July 26, 1996 Ph. Mississippi College, 1979 And, that doesn't include any of her music background! “If Chrissie Hynde had bolted Akron for Nashville instead of London, her unbuffered emotion and incisive observations might have taken shape something like those of Ms. Blair. The Washington-based singer/songwriter takes on romantic love’s frequent left turns and rude awakenings with straightforward lyrics and vocals to match. “Wild Night”, in particular, evokes the soulfulness of the afore-mentioned Ms. H. Not far into this conversation Sophie Lucido Johnson fears she may already have said too much about her polyamorous relationship with Ned, Luke, and Brian. Trying to head off a possible disaster Sophie texts Luke. That doesn t go well. Then Ned calls in. Among other revelations in this show are Sophie s unique take on breast size, the difference between kissing a man s lips and a woman s lips, what it s like for women to feel a woman s breasts pressing into them when they kiss each other, "waggling penises," missing teeth, and the correct interpretation of Emoji symbols, specifically the rabbit with blood pouring out of its nose. You know that one, right Like Sophie, Kate Mason is a comedian. Kate and Sophie are both part of this year s comedy festival, The Hell Yes Fest, that takes place up and down St Claude Avenue and in various other locations scattered around the city. Lynn Drury takes 60 minutes off of her hectic live schedule to stop by Happy Hour and play live. We catch up with Lynn s last boyfriend the one who bored her to tears reading her his PhD thesis and we get the inside scoop on what it s like to play 3 nights a week to drunk Swedes and Australians on Bourbon Street. Andrew Duhon tries out a new song and Sophie can t decide who to make out with first, Andrew or Lynn. The photos on this page were taken at Wayfare by Douglas Engel. You just know that the MeToo movement is going to be a feature at Mardi Gras this year. What you don t know, yet, is quite how sexual harassment is going translate into New Orleans style humor. So here s a bit of an early sneak peek at what you can expect. You d expect that the founder of the largest women s marching organization in the world who gave her club the name of "Bearded Oysters" would probably have a few unbridled and surprising points of view. Katrina Brees turns the tables on men and gets the upper hand by means of her own harassment, and the liberal advocacy for the recreational use of amyl nitrate, aka rush or in Katrina s shadow world online, VHS cleaner. Camp Morrison remembers using rush back in the day when he started his private detective agency the first time around. The second time was the charm and Camp has been in the private detective business in New Orleans since 1988. If you re looking to hire a private detective to snoop on people you ll have to use your own sleuthing skills to find Camp. His view of marketing is singularly unique, amounting to the belief that no good whatsoever can come from any public pronouncement. Lynn Drury makes a return appearance on Happy Hour with a brand new record, new songs and a new attitude about sex which begins with turning her phone off at midnight and not turning it back on again till 10AM when the male libido has supposedly quietened down. Lynn s take on the MeToo movement hasn t made the mainstream media. Because she s a Southern woman Lynn has reportedly had plenty of experience at getting harassed and is inclined to suck it up, or as Katrina re phrases it, lick it up. If you re looking to take the temperature of the average drinking New Orleanian at this beginning of the second year of the Trump era, this Happy Hour conversation is a good place to start. Two Christmases ago, before the then inexplicably eccentric manager at The Columns Hotel kicked us out because he "Didn t want to brand The Columns as a Happy Hour location," we recorded what has become one of the classic episodes of Happy Hour. Singer songwriter Lynn Drury, Rabbi Yonah Schiller, and New Orleans ultimate renaissance man Andrew Ward sat down with our show s host Grant Morris. Nobody at the table had anything in common, nobody knew each other or had met before the show started. What happened in the next 60 minutes convinced us we had indeed, with the right mix of guests, stumbled onto a magical format for a show. This is the 60 minutes that changed it all. That demonstrated how, with a moderate size bar tab and a small table, we could indeed show the world what New Orelanians are really like. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
