James Everingham, co-founder and VP of Engineering @ Lightspark, joins our podcast to share his best tools for scaling yourself down – not up – as an engineering leader. He discusses his latest career move shifting down in scale and how that impacts your risk tolerance as a leader. We also cover some of James' favorite leadership methods, including the Socratic method, principle-based decision-making, and creating narratives as a product / eng org goal-setting tool, plus how he's employed those tools effectively throughout his career. We also address navigating the balance between process & anti-process, approaches to product planning & finding PMF, and adapting your communication style to work within a smaller vs. large org.ABOUT JAMES EVERINGHAMJames Everingham (@jevering) is co-founder and VP of Engineering at Lightspark. Lightspark is building core infrastructure on the Lightning Network. Most recently he was Vice President of Engineering for Novi (Meta) and co-creator of Diem. Previously, James was the Head of Engineering at Instagram. James has led many world-class engineering teams throughout his 35-year career as a manager, entrepreneur, and technology developer. At Yahoo, he was Vice President of Engineering for Yahoo media properties after acquiring Luminate, an interactive image technology company he founded. Other previous roles include CTO and founding team member of LiveOps, Senior Director of Engineering at Tellme (acquired by Microsoft), and Senior Director of Engineering at Netscape Communications, where he was responsible for the flagship Netscape browser. Before joining Netscape, James held engineering and management positions at Oracle and Borland International."We had a great story in our head of like if we can simply make money flow or value flow fast and free frictionlessly around the world like a lot of good is going to happen but then that's the ending. That's the happy ending. Like, what are the chapters that we're going to write in between to get there? The first one was, 'Well, we're going to build this new infrastructure. Let's start getting it out there and getting it quickened in an area where it's already accepted.' And that's what we did. You know, that was the first one and we worked backwards from that. They're trying to make the story happen. They're not trying to make a list of tasks happen. And I think that's a really important distinction.”- James Everingham SHOW NOTES:James' latest experience scaling down in his career (2:44)Increasing your risk tolerance as an eng leader (5:15)Surprising ways eng leaders operate in a smaller org vs. a larger org (7:16)Optimizing communicating patterns when scaling down as a leader (10:23)Strategies for creating high-impact conversations within teams at a small org (12:12)How to use the Socratic method effectively as an eng leader (14:04)James' framework for anchoring decision-making principles (17:05)Why focusing on customer problems before business problems is a key principle (19:30)Layering the Socratic method approach & principle-based decision making (21:43)Tips for implementing these approaches early on & scaling them up (24:31)The trap of “process” & knowing when / where to introduce processes (25:41)Navigating the balance between complete process & anti-process (27:59)Deconstructing James' approach to product planning & goal setting (29:51)How James introduced the product planning narrative @ Lightspark (34:15)Advice for newcomers looking to identify & share a product narrative (36:38)Rapid fire questions (38:31)LINKS AND RESOURCESHow to Scale Yourself Down — Not Up — as a Leader - An article outlining the narrative goal setting framework that James discusses in the episode.Think Again: The Power of Knowing What You Don't Know - Adam Grant's book about the benefit of doubt and how we can get better at embracing the unknown and the joy of being wrong. This episode wouldn't have been possible without the help of our incredible production team:Patrick Gallagher - Producer & Co-HostJerry Li - Co-HostNoah Olberding - Associate Producer, Audio & Video Editor https://www.linkedin.com/in/noah-olberding/Dan Overheim - Audio Engineer, Dan's also an avid 3D printer - https://www.bnd3d.com/Ellie Coggins Angus - Copywriter, Check out her other work at https://elliecoggins.com/about/

In this episode of the Capital Stack podcast, host David Paul interviews Ross Fubini, the managing director of XYZ Ventures based in San Francisco. They discuss various topics related to venture funding, technology, and market trends. Here are the key highlights from the conversation: Ross Fubini's Background: Ross shares his background as a computer scientist and his early experience working for Netscape in the late '90s when the internet was still in its early stages of development. Netscape's Impact: They discuss Netscape's role in creating various foundational elements of the internet that are now taken for granted, such as the browser and proxy server, which laid the groundwork for the CDN (Content Delivery Network) business. Ross's Career Journey: Ross talks about his career path, including working for companies like Tellme, Plum Tree, Symantec, and starting his own enterprise software company, which was eventually acquired by SuccessFactors. He also mentions his transition into venture capital and his experiences at KPort Capital and Canaan Partners. Village Global: Ross briefly introduces Village Global, a network-based venture firm that connects luminaries, investors, fund managers, and founders. He highlights the power of networks and the opportunities they create. XYZ Ventures: Ross dives into XYZ Ventures, his current venture capital firm. They have a deep focus on founders coming from the Palantir network and have invested in companies within the enterprise software, FinTech, and SureTech sectors. Public Sector Opportunities: Ross explains their interest in the public sector, driven by his personal background and passion for making a significant impact in areas like defense, healthcare, and government procurement. He mentions their investment in Anduril, a defense contractor, as an example. Identifying Opportunities: Ross emphasizes the importance of identifying changing trends and industries where significant opportunities for innovation and growth exist, such as climate technology and procurement. Software Adoption in Traditional Industries: The hosts observe that traditionally stodgy industries like utilities and infrastructure are now buying software solutions, indicating a shift towards digital transformation and increased adoption of technology. Early Stage of Transformation: They acknowledge that despite the progress, these shifts are still in the early stages, and there are significant opportunities for innovation and growth in industries like defense and FinTech. Missed Opportunities in Healthcare: The hosts reflect on the missed opportunities in the healthcare sector, particularly during the COVID-19 pandemic, where the focus was primarily on telehealth and not enough on tech-enabled solutions and efficiency improvements. Complexity and Competition in Software: They discuss how software solutions that address complex problems tend to offer more value, as the easy problems have already been solved. Additionally, they note that the competitive landscape in the software industry can be intense, requiring constant innovation to stay ahead. Network-Driven Investments: The hosts emphasize the importance of networks and relationships in venture capital. They share their approach of focusing on founders introduced by other founders, as about 50% of their portfolio companies have come through such introductions. Outbound Sourcing: While they don't rely heavily on outbound sourcing, they believe in being proactive in reaching out to potential founders through their networks and leveraging existing relationships. Market Cycles and Portfolio Companies: The hosts mention that they are fortunate to be in a strong position with profitable late-stage investments and well-funded early-stage companies. They advise their portfolio companies to be appropriately skeptical, closely monitor budgets and sales performance, and continue demonstrating growth despite market challenges. Overall, the episode covers Ross...

I'm always on the hunt for new and exciting ways to help my students become successful readers (I bet you are too!) Luckily when it comes to literacy, there are a lot of different approaches you can take. And on today's episode, I'd love to share one more with you- a platform called Simbi. Simbi is an online platform that offers a variety of interactive content specifically designed to help children learn to read. With Simbi, your child will have access to stories, games, and activities that's intended to keep them engaged and excited about learning. Here are a few highlights: -Simbi is developed in collaboration with literacy experts and reading teachers from around the world. -Simbi's methods – Reading Along, Narrating, TellMe and more – are proven to improve reading comprehension, fluency, and memory. -It helps motivate both avid and struggling readers to improve their own proficiency, and to help others do the same! One of the things I love most though is this company's pledge to foster lifelong reading habits while creating global impact. Here's how they do it: On Simbi's unique Read for Good platform, learners give back by sharing their voices to help others. Topics such as social-emotional, social justice, resilience and global citizenship are introduced. Children are able to explore diverse content from top publishers, always free of ads, and available any time of day. As students narrate books for others to hear, they earn volunteer hours automatically. Certificates can be downloaded to celebrate reading, or submit for service hours. (So cool!) Never heard of it? Not to worry! Adrienne Gear, Canadian teacher, author and representative of Simbi is here to give us the scoop. So if you're looking for a new and engaging way to support your child's literacy skills, check out this episode to learn more about Simbi. Bleib Dir treu, Dein Julian

Trust is the glue that binds relationships. Without trust, it's nearly impossible for any relationship to last. These trust quotes show that our whole world is built around our ability to trust others. We all have our own handful of beliefs about trust — especially when it comes to love. We wonder if we should trust someone from the start until they give us a reason not to, or if it's better to hold back until our trust has been earned. It can be hard to choose which way to go. If you hold back trust in a relationship, you send a message that you aren't willing to open up to your partner, but if you give trust blindly without really knowing who a person is first, there's a good chance of getting hurt.We all have our own handful of beliefs about trust — especially when it comes to love.
