In this episode of Shoving Wilco, host Todd Rossnagel sits down with fellow Wilco devotee and music industry veteran Chris Campbell, whose YouTube channel is a treasure trove of insight on vinyl, alt-country, and, of course, Wilco.Todd and Chris dive deep into how Wilco arrived in their lives at the perfect time, with Chris tracing his journey from Uncle Tupelo to Being There, Summerteeth, and beyond. They swap personal connections to songs like “How to Fight Loneliness,” reflect on Jeff Tweedy's lyrical honesty, and explore what Yankee Hotel Foxtrot sounded like in a post-9/11 New York City—where Chris was front row at the band's legendary shows. This one's for the vinyl nerds, the alt-country lifers, and anyone who has ever felt like Tweedy wrote a song just for them.
Omnivore Recordings co-founder and four-time Gramny-winning producer Cheryl Pawelski has figured out how to do what she loves for a living. She went from obsessing about music in Milwaukee to having great adventures in the "floater pool" at Capitol Records in Los Angeles. With stints at Rhino and Concord as well, she oversaw ambitious reissues by, among others, the Band, Big Star, the Smithereens, the Beach Boys, Pat Benatar, Nina Simone and the Miles Davis Quintet. Her long association with Wilco has included deluxe boxes for Summerteeth, Yankee Hotel Foxtrot (which won a Grammy) and, earlier this year, A Ghost Is Born. She won another Grammy for the 2023 7-CD set Written In Their Soul: The Stax Songwriter Demos. She recounts it all with the passion of a fan, even as she deals with the challenges of running a record label and the recent loss of her Altadena home in the Southern California wildfires. Ken Coomer joins me on the podcast today. Ken is a fantastic drummer, producer, and studio owner, as well as one of the few musicians I know that is actually from Nashville! Ken is well-known as the original drummer for Wilco, as well as the last for Uncle Tupelo, bands that literally defined the alt-country genre in the mid-90's. But before that, Ken came up in the punk and alternative rock scene here in Nashville with his band Clockhammer, and since leaving Wilco in 2002, he has had an incredible career as a studio drummer and producer, operating most recently out of his studio just a few blocks away from me in East Nashville called Cartoon Moon Recording. Ken was heavily involved in the recording of Uncle Tupelo's classic “Anodyne”, as well as the Wilco albums “FM”, “Being There”, “Summerteeth”, “Yankee Hotel Foxtrot” and the “Mermaid Avenue” projects with Wilco and Billy Bragg. After his run with Wilco, Ken returned to Nashville to try his hand at session work and producing. He's played with and recorded on albums for Steve Earle, Will Hoge, Al Green, Tim Finn, Lucinda Williams, Emmylou Harris and many more. He's also had an incredible run producing some huge Spanish artists, which is an intriguing left-turn that his more recent career has taken, with artists like Chetes, and AppleTree - albums that were huge in Mexico and Columbia. It was great to have Ken drop in to speak about all of this amazing history. New Orleans singer/songwriter Lynn Drury helped Rob get over his irrational Jeff Tweedy/Wilco bias and fully embrace their 1999 release, 'summerteeth'. Tweedy and multi-instrumentalist Jay Bennett combined intricate studio experimentation with pure pop to craft a wonderfully ambiguous gem of a record. Songs discussed in this episode: Thirteen - Wilco; Blue, Fade - Lynn Drury; The Palace at 4 A.M. - Jay Bennett; I Can't Stand It, She's A Jar - Wilco; Baby Do Right - Lynn Drury; A Shot In The Arm, We're Just Friends - Wilco; Mountain Girl - Blue Mountain; I'm Always In Love, Nothing'severgonnastandinmyway (Again), How To Fight Loneliness, Via Chicago, My Darling, When You Wake Up Feeling Old, In A Future Age - Wilco; High Tide - Lynn Drury

It's been a week since former Rolling Stone publisher Jann Wenner gave a disastrous interview to the New York Times to promote his upcoming book of classic rocker interviews, The Masters. Thankfully, it lingered just long enough in the news for Steven and Ian to talk about it on the pod. The guys reflect on Wenner's legacy, why he chose to say out loud what many assumed were his feelings about women and black musicians, and what this means for the discourse overall. Also, they talk about the surprise re-emergence of Spin's Bob Guccione Jr. aka the guy Axl Rose threatened to beat up in "Get In The Ring." (:25)From there they talk about Laugh Track, the surprise new album by The National that dropped earlier this week (23:33). It's their second LP of 2023 after First Two Pages Of Frankenstein, and it sounds a lot like that record. Steven and Ian are somewhat lukewarm on both records, though Steven believes that a very good single National album could have been made from their best material. What's going on with this band, and have they lost the ability to self-edit?In the mailbag, a listener takes the guys to task for talking about sports too much (33:43), and another letter writer asks an important CD-related question: jewel case or digipak? (41:52)In Recommendation Corner (49:51), Ian talks about the Grimes-like singer-songwriter Yeule while Steven recommends the Summerteeth-like rock band Slaughter Beach, Dog.New episodes of Indiecast drop every Friday. Dave Schloss is a son and a brother and a husband, and a father. He's an entrepreneur, a killer ice-hockey teammate, and he once had the pleasure of calling me his next-door neighbor.Dave, and his wife, Anna, made career pivots and left their beloved Chicago life for some adulthood in Kansas City, going from downtown to midtown to the north town while they were here, but've recently found themselves enjoying a healthy dose of island time down in the the ol' Sunshine State.Their crew was back in town for a bit to relax and hang with family, and I was lucky enough to steal a couple of hours with him to record Episode #78.In our conversation, we talked about family and band life and school and, of course, a few of Dave's favorite albums. They were these:Honky Chateau (1972), Elton JohnThe Specials's self-titled (1979)Dookie (1994), Green DayWilco's Summerteeth (1999)Continuum (2006), John MayerPleased as punch that Dave made the time. On this weeks episode, we take a listen to the third album by Wilco, 1999's Summerteeth. Wilco rose from the ashes of Uncle Tupelo trying to find its footing in the shadow of Son Volt, the band Jay Farrar founded. Wilco lead singer and main songwriter Jeff Tweedy had the vision of letting multi-instrumentalist Jay Bennett play just about any keyboard he could get his hands on while he and the rest of the band provided strong backing that let the songs sound like pop tunes from another time, even though lyrics could be dark and, in some cases, disturbing. While a transitional album for the band that portends what is to come, it stands on its own and contains some of Tweedy's most compelling (and catchy) songwriting.

In this episode of "Shoving Wilco," Todd Rossnagel and Tim Arnold engage in a comprehensive analysis of the initial three albums of Wilco, namely, "AM," "Being There," and "Summerteeth." Employing the methodology of "Start, Bench, Cut," the hosts invite the audience to identify a song from each of the three albums that they would "start" (a personal favorite), "bench" (an underrated gem), or "cut" (a less favored song). --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/shovingwilco/support

We're back! Really! Having revived ourselves with grapefruit Spindrift and coffee following our lackluster 2nd anniversary show, we invited Andrew 'actually Armenian' Martin, author of the novel Early Work and the short story collection Cool for America, to join us at Lauren's Park Slope manse for a rollicking discussion of Book 2's famous face-slashing section! Andrew did not disappoint: with typical Armenian wit and candor, he helped us to pick apart the drunken series of events leading to Karl Ove's facial mutilation. Enjoy! cheat sheet: 00:50 - Andrew gives us the DL on all the most important Armenian Americans; we start beef with Elif Batuman; the Queen is mourned, we ponder which British 80s singers are bereft, and which are overjoyed; 25:16 - Karl Ove sets eyes on Linda for the first time; it's the summer of 1999, Linda's wearing cool Matrix sunglasses (we're pretty sure) and we ponder what other y2k phenomena Karl Ove engaged with. Also: the 2022 film The Northman helps us to understand some peculiar actions reportedly undertaken by Karl Ove and Arve at the Biskops Arno seminar. 52:00 - Karl Ove tries to impress Linda by playing Wilco's Summerteeth and showing her a Roman cookbook, to no avail; this leads Lauren to prompt Drew and Andrew to share their picks on which album and cookbook they would choose to impress a woman in 2022. 1:19:06 - The rejection comes, somewhat robotically; Karl Ove takes a shard of glass to his face but it doesn't stop him from enjoying some pizza and catching a Garbage concert with Tonje the day after. Andrew and Drew reflect on acts of drunken destruction undertaken as young men. Until next time! Also.... Have brain damage? Few lyricists have Jeff Tweedy's ability to fluidly shift between plainspoken emotion and abstract imagery. The Wilco frontman has been writing beautiful, beguiling songs for more than three decades, and there is no way to pin down what any of them "means." There's only what they mean to you, right then, in the moment, as you listen to them. That's certainly true of "Jesus, Etc." one of many standout tracks off of Wilco's groundbreaking 2001 album Yankee Hotel Foxtrot. On this episode, Kirk explores some of the writing and arrangement techniques that help make this song, and all of Tweedy's songs, so special.Lyrics by: Jeff TweedyMusic by: Jeff Tweedy and Jay BennettAlbum: Yankee Hotel Foxtrot, 2001Listen/Buy via SongwhipAlso Featured/Discussed:"I Am Trying to Break Your Heart," "War on War," and "The Ashes of American Flags" from Yankee Hotel Foxtrot"She's a Jar" and "A Shot in the Arm" by Wilco from Summerteeth, 1999Audio from Jeff Tweedy's 2021 interview on The Ezra Klein ShowExcerpts from Tweedy's 2020 book How To Write One Song: Loving the Things We Create and How They Love Us BackAudio of a pedal steel guitar demonstration by Steve Fishell: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NrbSL92Kz1YOUTRO SOLOIST: Dan NervoThis episode's outro soloist is the fantastic Dan Nervo. For a large percentage of Wilco fans, the glory days of that band were in the late 90’s and early 00’s, with classic albums such as Being There, Summerteeth, and Yankee Hotel Foxtrot. It’s no coincidence that those records, along with collaborations with Billy Bragg on previously-unrecorded Woody Guthrie tunes, featured multi-instrumentalist Jay Bennett. And when I say multi-instrumentalist, I don’t mean he can set down his guitar to play piano on a few tracks. Bennett was a savant. He was a man who could pretty much turn any object into a tuneful tool.Bennett was fired from Wilco in 2001 during the latter stages of Yankee Hotel Foxtrot’s creation, and his dismissal was controversially included in 2002’s “I Am Trying To Break Your Heart” documentary. After a series of critically acclaimed solo albums, Bennett tragically passed away in 2009.Bennett’s story is finally being told with this week’s release of “Where Are You, Jay Bennett?”, and co-directors Gorman Bechard and Fred Uhter are interviewed in this week’s episode about a film that Bechard says he made to “right the wrongs” of that previous documentary. Besides his controversial dismissal from Wilco, Jay’s entire life is showcased, from his mom proudly showing his […]

On this episode we discuss "Hold Me Anyway," and this Songkick Live performance of it is excellent. Is this song even better than "Love is Everywhere (Beware)?" It might be!Here's the urbandictionary.com definition of "guitarmony," so apparently the word exists beyond Adam Nash.Does this song harken back to Summerteeth? You be the judge. We were really scarred by "We Were Lucky," I guess, because we can't stop talking about it. This is the fan extended version to further scar us.We mentioned the call and response feature of this Beatles tune.We mentioned harmoniums, and harmoniums are cool."That plastic bag is me.""I'm like a hologram."We talk a bit about negative self talk, so here's a video about it.Next episode shall be "An Empty Corner" (this version is from Songkick Live). Also, can't believe we haven't done this in the show notes yet, just for the fun of it, but here it is... "Ode to Joy."
Once again, Kevin rants about the one thing he's most passionate about…. the track listing of Summerteeth. Eventually Jason steers things back on course and the boys get into the eerie finale of Summerteeth “In A Future Age”. Acabamos con un poco de soul a cargo de Devin B. Thompson.- The Yum Yums, For Those About To Pop - The Yum Yums, Bubbglegum Baby - Professor and the Madman, Seance - Professor and the Madman, The Council Of Purgatory- Matthew Sweet, At A Loss - Malin Petersen, California - Nikki O'Neill, You're the Only One Who Gets Me - Kacey Johansing, No Better Time- Honey, Partner- Dirty Projectors, Searching Spirits - Wilco, How to Fight Loneliness - Neil Young & Crazy Horse, Falling From Above - Devin B. Buscando la última canción, la más reciente, esa que te pueda arrebatar, entusiasmar, que no te deje indiferente. Dedicado a Charito y Santi. Fue su disco de 1999. "Summerteeth". Escuchar audio

Get those pop culture questions all set and send them in! The guys from Taking It Down will answer any and all! Mail them to TheAlabamaTake@gmail.com or by hitting us on social media: Twitter, Facebook, or Instagram. We at Taking It Down will compile them, answer them, and give you a shout in the September 29th episode of the podcast (2:05). For today's Taking It Down, you'll find everything on the up and up other than Blaine and Adam having not done their homework! The gentlemen do offer a little respite: the new Taking It Down book club! For the month of October, everyone who wants can join Blaine, Adam, and Donovan in parsing the newly released The Only Good Indians by Stephen Graham Jones, set to be a gothic horror encounter. Count us in (2:33). The culmination of their reading will be on the episode on Tuesday, October 27th and just in time for Halloween. The gents then try to put their finger on this covid crisis to no avail (6:19) before shifting into a segment all about new music of the week. They talk about Bruce Springsteen's newest, "A Letter For You" and why it's a dud (8:54), a conversation on how Wilco is doing it wrong when it comes to the reissue of Summerteeth (18:17), and how Tom Petty did it right with the upcoming and long-awaited Wildflowers reissue (24:46). But it's not just reissues. The Flaming Lips have a few album. Will it be as as good as The Soft Bulletin (28:11)? After the break the guys discuss the meaningless of the year's college football slates so far (34:08) before they get into the meat of the show, which is the Dune trailer (42:38). There's no way it's not at least phenomenal. We shall see. If you'd like to help the show and the website, please visit BuyMeACoffee.com/TheAlabamaTake. Songs about work for Labor Day weekend. Songs for the long, dark night shift of the soul. Songs for when the whistle blows. Songs for when the job blows. Songs to whistle while you work, plus some new songs that have nothing to do with work. All this & much, much less!

Tired of having your social media filled with the latest COVID-19 stats or fire and brimstone messages from friends who aren't virologists offering their two cents worth? Never fear. This month on LTA, we will digress your mind with stories of murder, depression, and drug addiction. There you go...feel better? For episode 132 of Love That Album, I am joined by electronic music duo, Lovers and Poets ….oh yeah and the hosts of the wonderful All Time Top Ten podcast, Shannon Hurley and Ben Eisen to talk about Wilco's third album Summerteeth.Wilco are probably thought of mostly for their collaboration with Billy Bragg, “Mermaid Avenue” or for the stranger than fiction story surrounding the recording of their Yankee Hotel Foxtrot album. Summerteeth was YHF's predecessor and is often written off as a transitional album. As great as YHF is, Summerteeth is not transitional to anything – it's its own magnificent beast. The lyrical subject matter gets very dark, which can be easily overlooked because many of the melodies are bright and poppy. As wonderful as Wilco's catalogue is, they never made another album that sounded quite like this again. Of course, aside from Jeff Tweedy and John Stirrat, Wilco in 2020 is not the same band as Wilco of 1998.Ben, Shannon and I discuss band dynamics, musical contributions and the stories told on Summerteeth. I make a really large stretch in suggesting that the record is a concept album. Do I justify it? What are Ben and Shannon's thoughts? In the second episode of Season Two of "Dave's Old Interview Tapes," IndyStar reporter David Lindquist and guest John Byrne (guitarist in Danny Flanigan and the Rain Chorus, 3:1 and more) revisit 1998 and 2002 interviews with Wilco vocalist-guitarist Jeff Tweedy. Highlights include Tweedy's discussion of landmark Wilco albums "Being There," "Summerteeth" and "Yankee Hotel Foxtrot."
Twenty years ago, riding high off of the dual successes of their second album Being There and Billy Bragg collaboration Mermaid Ave, Wilco was still 2 years away from becoming one of the most revered band’s of their generation. Yankee Hotel Foxtrot would propel Jeff Tweedy and crew into the stratosphere, but it was on 1999’s Summerteeth that they truly found their voice. Experimental, lush, and heartbreaking to its core, Summerteeth is a record that captured the soul of Wilco like nothing they have created before or since. Tune in as guests Casey Rae and Eduardo Nunes join us in celebrating twenty years of the album that changed Wilco, and arguably modern music, forever. See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
In the fourth episode of season two, the guys talk about Sad Dad Legends-- Wilco. Headed by frontman, Jeff Tweedy, Summerteeth is their third studio album(not counting a Woody Guthrie tribute of sorts with Billy Bragg). It's the first album where the band’s alt-country tentacles begin reaching towards an expanding psychedelic direction. It’s a mixture of dark lyricism and eclectic instrumentation which was fueled by American Spirits, Diet Coke, and opioids. Its very sad… and it’s very dad. So join us on another hour long adventure as we talk about what Jeff Tweedy describes as the “hyper-sexual nature of Wilco’s music”.

In conversation with Talia Schlanger, host of World Cafe on WXPN Jeff Tweedy is the lead vocalist, songwriter, and guitarist for the Grammy Award-winning rock band Wilco, declared ''one of the most respected bands on the planet'' and lauded as ''paragons of good taste, masters of genre-bridging craftsmanship and chill independence'' (Rolling Stone). Their many studio albums include Summerteeth, Yankee Hotel Foxtrot, and Sky Blue Sky. Tweedy was also one of the founders of the trailblazing alt-country group Uncle Tupelo, and has recorded a solo album, a record with his son Spencer, and has collaborated with a score of other musicians. In Let's Go (So We Can Get Back), Tweedy tells the story of his Midwestern upbringing and current life as a husband and father, the early Chicago indie-rock scene that launched his career, and his musical process and perspective. Wilco has a deep discography. From their early alt-country roots on AM and Being There to their ascent to elder indie-rock statesmen, it’s hard to know where to start. While a common entry point to the band is their masterpiece Yankee Hotel Foxtrot, there may not be a better synthesis of Wilco future and past than Summerteeth. As far as it goes with hand claps and cowbells, the majority of people are 2/3 of the way there. With Shane rejoining the podcast after a brief sabbatical, we felt it was a good time for another mixtape episode. But don't fear the reaper, we've collected 12 great tunes that showcase (or don't) the percussive beauty of skin on skin and wood on metal bovine accessory. Enjoy! Round 1 ###[Close To Me][1] - *The Cure* ### This is the first song I can remember noticing hand claps. I mean of course, I had heard them in songs before, but they are so obvious in this one, not to mention I first heard this song around the age when I started really paying attention to music. ###Hair Of The Dog - Nazareth ### This song could have easily been substituted for Blue Oyster Cult's "Don't Fear the Reaper" in the classic Walken SNL sketch, as it features the the most over-the-top employment of 70's cowbell to ever emerge from a cannabis-fogged van. Scotland's answer to AC/DC--I would so totally go see them today if they toured together--even if Nazareth's bass player is the only remaining member left over from this era. ###Your Life Is A Lie - MGMT ### Not exactly what you would immediately tag as a "single" from indie rock giants MGMT but the video certainly has legs. The solid thunk of the cowbell (or perhaps just a lead pipe) transcends the stereotypical 70's rhythmic standard heard everywhere, including through some of this podcast. You can thank acid for this one. ###Stars and Sons - Broken Social Scene ### Sometimes the handclaps resonate more when you have to wait for them, and that's exactly what happens with Stars and Sons -- this is Broken Social Scene at full swagger, and the handclaps here serve as an exclamation point, culminating the building tension within the track. No bubblegum to be found. Round 2 ###[Nothing'severgonnastandinmyway(again)][5] - *Wilco* ### A great song off of a great album. *Summerteeth* is criminally underrated. The handclaps in this one aren't as prominently featured as other songs on this list, but they are just right. ###Hey Ya! - OutKast ### I don't give half a shit what the rest rest of the guys around the table care about this song, as it is pure genius to my ears--to the point that I actively searched my radio dial incessantly for it at its popular zenith. This is catchy as all-hell, the video delivers in spades, and marked the high point of a double album (which, if we're "being honest" was really just two solo records sewn together). Also, it features hand-claps. ###Lowrider - War ### There's a real root of Chicano and Cuban percussion throughout this gem and the cowbell features prominently thus. Performed by the band War, who also gave us hits like "Spill The Wine" and "Why Can't We Be Friends?", it seems difficult to imagine anyone who has not heard that punchy trumpet riff at least a dozen times. ###House of Jealous Lovers - The Rapture ### You will not be surprised to learn that James Murphy had a hand in production here, and to that extent this sounds like the sibling of a long lost LCD Soundsystem release. At the time the band felt a dance song might alienate their fans, but why? This track is a calorie burn waiting to happen. Both cowbells and handclaps join the party. Round 3 ###[Cecilia][9] - *Simon & Garfunkel* ### What can I say, the patron saint of handclap songs, somebody was gonna need to pick this one. ###Stuck In The Middle With You - Stealers Wheel ### There is so much to love about this song/video, from its 70's bell-bottom majesty to its literal interpretation of being stuck between a clown and a joker (although--party game--guess which one is which). This also features both cowbell and hand-claps, which gives it a double-whammy for this episode. I have my doubts, but it would appear that Kevin also spontaneously picked out the solo artist that this band spawned. One last thing: I would be derelict in my duty if I didn't give away the spoiler that there are no ears severed in this. Deal with it, and just go re-watch Reservoir Dogs. ###Groove Is In The Heart - Deee-Lite ### When I was a sophomore in college, my buddy Hondo made up his own lyrics to this song called "Move Your Shopping Cart", with the chorus ringing out "I'm Krogerin' for my mother". It's an earworm that often sidelines my brain for days at a time with a nice, driving (and likely sampled) cowbell keeping it all together. ###Clever Girls - Paul Carlberg ### It seems appropriate to note the omnipresent Swedish songwriting tradition here, but we spend precious little time discussing up and coming songcraft in that regard...those who pen the smash hits get all the ink. For his part, Pelle Carlberg knows his way around a ditty, and this buoyant track with the overly complicated name brings us home.

Bill and Brian welcome back podcaster and musician Jim Laczkowski (nowplayingnetwork.net and gardenonatrampoline.com) to discuss Wilco's foray into lush indie pop, Summerteeth (1999, Reprise). Jim talks about checking out the band after reading a favorable review from critic Greg Kot. Then Bill, Brian, and Jim discuss Wilco's evolution within their career, Jay Bennett's influence on the sound of the band, how the album maybe hit at the wrong time - namely, a time when Creed was blowing up the charts, how Jeff Tweedy is 'da bomb,' typical mid-Western Chicago guys shaving their heads and wearing dresses (y'know, like Billy Corgan), a lot about what we think Schmilco should sound like, the obvious influence of Sesame Street, Ken Coomer's welcome contributions as a great drummer, some great-but-extraneous tracks at the end, and more as we make our way through the album track by track!
It's a WSBU/88.3 The Buzz reunion, and Brian catches up with fellow St. Bonaventure alum and author Michael Farrell. The two talk about the importance that Dr. Rick Simpson played in both of their writing lives, with Michael telling the story about how Doc Simpson line-edited the 600-page first draft of his first novel. Farrell talks about the writing process of his two novels, Running with Buffalo and When the Lights Went Out. He discusses the lessons he learned in several grad-school meetings with Dennis Lehane, why it's important to keep a story moving forward, what it's like to see Buffalo's resurgence and how he's happy his children won't have to grow up through his stories. But most importantly, Michael helps Brian figure out how to start listening to Wilco.
After a week's hiatus, Cosmic America is back in your kitchen with more music talk. For this episode, we delve into a classic from 1999, Summerteeth by Wilco. This album saw the band fully shed the alt-country label that had been stuck on them since their inception in 1995, with frontman Jeff Tweedy and multi-instrumentalist Jay Bennett embracing a Wilson/Spectoresque approach to production, marrying complex overdubs to emotionally vulnerable lyrics. This one got missed by most of the alt rock crowd, and its place in Wilco history is forever overshadowed by its successor, but this is a damn fine album in its own right.Be sure to subscribe to Cosmic America on iTunes, and tweet us with your musical thoughts and review ideas at @doctorgc and @akmccarthy. Thanks for listening.
