The boys are back and this week they are delving into the strange world of Mondo Cane.
What makes a great love song? By chatting about our favourites maybe we can find the common elements. We were inspired by recording our 69th episode in the middle of February which felt like the right convergence of events to talk about songs that express a sentiment of love. Not lust. Not fleeting moments of teenage attraction. Not a rendezvous at the local discotheque. Long lasting, true, heartfelt, dedicated love. But also the pang of love lost - or true love yet to come to fruition. Featured songs: Pagan Poetry by Bjork, from Vespertine, 2001 To Make You Feel My Love by Adele, from 19, 2008 To Make You Feel My Love Trisha Yearwood, from Hope Floats soundtrack, 1998 A Chicken with its Head Cut Off and I Don't Want to get Over You by The Magnetic Fields, from 69 Love Songs, 1999 Everlong by Foo Fighters, from The Colour and the Shape, 1997 Ore D'Amore by Mike Patton, from Mondo Cane, 2010 Gold to Me by Ben Harper, from Fight for Your Mind, 1995 Soldier by Richard Dawson, from Peasant, 2017 Fix You by Cold Play, from X&Y, 2005 Good Woman by Cat Power, from You Are Free, 2003 All I Need by Radiohead, from In Rainbows, 2007 La La Love You by The Pixies, Doolittle, 1989 Is This Love by Bob Marley, from Kaya, 1978 Lover, You Should Have Come Over by Jeff Buckley, from Grace, 1994 I Can't Help Falling in Love and I Need Love by Luka Bloom, from Acoustic Motorbike, 1992 Socials: Fb: https://www.facebook.com/supersonicchat Electronic mailing system: supersonicchat@gmail.com The Twits: https://twitter.com/chat_sonic Insta: https://www.instagram.com/supersonicchat --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/supersonicchat/message
Django Nudo and the Smut Peddler are joined in the studio by Kitty Lash to explore the weird and wonderful world of Mondo films. First we explore parallels between Netflix's "Clark" (2022) and "I - a Summer Lover" (1972), the former starring Bill Skarsgård while the latter his dad Stellan Skarsgård and both getting nude while sleeping with mother/daughters, as well as "The Vicious Breed" (1955). Having argued over definitions of 'Mondo' and whether it is right to call tribes 'tribes', we dive into mondo movie maelstrom: Pigalle Crossing of Illusions (1973) - Spy thriller about stripper smuggling microfilm, but really just an excuse to show off lots of striptease and erotic acts from Moulin Rouge and other Pigalle venues. Include cowboy acts. (In Paris? Pourquois cowboys?) Mondo Balordo (1964) - Boris Karloff guides us through a world "throbbing and pulsing with love, from the jungle orgies of primitive tribes to sin-filled evenings of the London sophisticate." And Bedouin pimps - or maybe Lebanese. Mondo Freudo & Mondo Bizarro (1966) - We have visionary American 'scumbags' Lee Frost and Bob Cresse to thank for adding an American twist to the Mondo genre with their Olympic International films. "Possibly the creepiest of all the Mondo films," according to Kitty, but sexy in bits depending on your fetish and "strangely erotic". Mondo Bizarro also has an opening credit sequence and music track ripe to be ripped off by Quentin Tarantino. The Wild Wild World of Jayne Mansfield (1968) - In which we are taken on a tour of Rome and Paris by Jayne Mansfield, before she is then killed in a car accident (though not decapitated). Graphic, horrific footage from the crash. Made after her death, the film is narrated by a Mansfield sound-alike, talking about getting her bum pinched in Rome and interviewing tranny beauty queens. Her death car can be seen as part Scott Michael's Dearly Departed tours of Los Angeles. Mondo Pazzo, aka Mondo Cane 2 (1963) - Sequel to their ground-breaking shockumentary Mondo Cane is another beautifully photographed but equally disturbing crackpot travelogue of global gross-outs and international insanity. Kwaheri (1964) - We now go into darkest Africa. Warning from Kitty Lash: this Mondo film was the most stomach churning, with the open skull brain surgery by the African witch doctor. Cannot be unseen! Plus "wild orgies of the body and mind." Malamondo (1964) - Early Mondo film about weird teens doing things like skiing nude, distinguished by the soundtrack by Ennio Morricone. The score does not so much support the pictures as beautiful photography seemingly there "to give visual accompaniment to a hauntingly sublime score."Mondo Keazunt (1955) - Four Italians cross the "Green Hell" of the Amazon, with snake fights and piranhas eating a cow alive. Keazuntheit! Don't miss the sublime Spotify Mondo score collection and we promise to have Kitty Lash back soon. We end with a brilliant Mondo radio ad.

Thanks for coming back to the Two D Ten podcast! I've been gone for a while, but now I'm back. I'll be publishing one episode a month unless I publish more due to special guests or events. This month, I sat down with MARK Q ANDERSON and RICK WHEELER from Mondo Cane Publishing. We chat about recording podcasts, doing reviews, the origins of Mondo Cane Publishing, and more. “Mondo Cane Publishing is an independent tabletop gaming development organization based in the United States that is creating tabletop traditional and tabletop roleplaying games which are evocative of the strange and occult. We are enthusiastic creators weaving settings and stories in the horror, sci-fi, fantasy, and adventure genres. We're also providing writing and game development support for the indie TTRPG market. Tabletop gaming is the passion that we share with so many others around the world, and we strive to develop games, systems, and accessories that bring magic and wonder to the table of avid players and gamemasters.”Check out Mondo Cane all around the internet: mondocanepublishing.comTwitterFacebookDiscordAnd now, some blatant self-promotion: Check out my new book on Storytellers VaultIf you like my podcasts, videos, and other assorted stuff, check out my Patreon.
Film chroniqué : La Femme spectacle, Claude Lelouch, 1964
Music by Dr. Thomas W. Smith
Felix sets out to make a documentary about Oscar and ends up almost directing a porno film in “Felix Directs”. Items of discussion include: the use of prunes for breakfast, the multiple NYC location shots, the career of guest actors David White and how he and character actor Louis Guss have a unique scene in the episode, how PBS's American Family and the movie Mondo Cane are referenced, the differences in Super 8 & 16MM film, and what exactly is a XX rating.
Today we head to France with Rabih Gebeile. We decide to take a walk through the French countryside and no, that's not a euphemism. So occasionally there will be a bit of wind noise. But Rabih has led a fascinating life, including escaping civil wars. He's lived all over the world and all of this can be felt and heard in his music. It's also been influenced by the medical condition his father developed several years ago, called normal pressure hydrocephalus. We discuss how moving so often as a kid has had an effect on him (and me) as we get older. We disagree on French gangster rap, and he ruins my conspiracy theory of 8's with coincidence. Rabih also talks about how he felt the first time he found a bootleg of his albums. This episode has something for everyone, including birds, angry cows, and overly affecioante dogs. Follow Rabih @mondocane_tv. Get the EP on Bandcamp. Send it to other people! Send this show to other people; rate & review it. We accept coffe at ko-fi.com/performanceanxiety.

In this episode, the team ruminates over the landmark exploitation film, what it might have meant then, what it for sure means to us now, and how it changed movies for better or worse. Also discussed, the difficult life of sharks, the perils of visual anthropology, and the possible whereabouts of Bob Keeshan's nose.
Imperdible.

Mondo Cane was a scandalous Italian documentary movie of the early 1960s which consisted of totally unrelated segments ranging from pet cemeteries in California to ornamentally arranged monk's bones in Rome to women in New Guinea nursing piglets. Flemish artists Jos de Gruyter and Harald Thys and curator Anne-Claire Schmitz have now used the Mondo Cane concept as a basis for this year's Belgian Pavilion at the Venice Biennale, commissioned by the Wallonia-Brussels Federation. They tell us all about it. www.belgianpavilion.be

Oh, to have been there in the heyday of Grindhouse Cinema! Rows of theaters on New York’s 42nd Street playing classics such as I Drink Your Blood, Children Shouldn’t Play with Dead Things, Ilsa: She-Wolf of the SS, Three on a Meathook, The Corpse Grinders, and more. These movies are the stuff of cinema legend, and late night video parties...and so are the theaters and audiences that experienced them! And our guest today, 42nd Street Pete Chiarella, was there for the highs and lows (and sleazy lowdowns) of it all. Pete, the creator of Grindhouse Purgatory magazine, has lots of stories to tell, and he was kind enough to join me to talk about the filmmakers, the movies, The Deuce, and the Lost Hustler Spirit of New York City. I invite you to listen in, and experience some real Grindhouse legend. Take a hilarious trip through the gory, sexy, sleazy history of 'The Deuce" of the 1970's with tour guide 42nd Street Pete! HELLO THERE CITIZENS, ARE YOU READY FOR ANOTHER DIRE YET ENTERTAINING TRANSMISSION FROM PLANET CINEPUNX?… The post CINEPUNX Episode 70: Rob Skvarla Talks Psuedo-Documentaries (MONDO CANE, THE CHARIOTS OF THE GODS, THE LATE GREAT PLANET EARTH) appeared first on Cinepunx.
HELLO THERE CITIZENS, ARE YOU READY FOR ANOTHER DIRE YET ENTERTAINING TRANSMISSION FROM PLANET CINEPUNX? That works, right? Hey friends, we return to you with another dynamic episode, filled with thrills and chills and…spills? This time for episode 70 we welcomed Rob Skvarla, writer/programmer/cineaste/unrepentant Goth Sad BOY! I am so fat in that last picture, holy shit. Rob brought a topic to us which we would NEVER have chosen on our own but relates to his own research in gradschool, that is Psuedo-Documentaries. The three Rob chose for us relate, in his telling, directly to the later films of the Satanic Panic moment, and now to such films as The Clinton Files. The films we watched and discussed were MONDO CANE THE CHARIOTS OF THE GODS THE LATE GREAT PLANET EARTH We are pretty straight up with Rob that these films were not always fun to watch, but they led us to a fun and interesting discussion. Rob chose the music for the middle section, it is from one of the movies mentioned so see if you can figure it out, and our opening song is Crucifix. There is, I suspect, more to say. However, I just want to get this episode out there for you to hear it Big thanks as always to LVAC for their generous support, and you should also check out PhilaMOCA cause Rob works there Do us a favor: rate and review us on iTunes. for some reason this is the biggest measure for podcast success, and we tryna get some sponsors on this jawn so we can start paying folks actual money. Please? Thanks The post CINEPUNX Episode 70: Rob Skvarla Talks Psuedo-Documentaries (MONDO CANE, THE CHARIOTS OF THE GODS, THE LATE GREAT PLANET EARTH) appeared first on Cinepunx.
This month, at Anthology Film Archives, FILM COMMENT contributor Nick Pinkerton has programmed a variety of shockumentary-style works ranging from the notorious Mondo Cane (an Academy Award nominee, for Original Song) to Thierry Zéno's Des Morts. Many of these films aim to shock and titillate, sometimes purporting to document actual deaths, but they become politically and culturally revealing texts. None of this problematic entertainment holds a candle, however, to the real-life horror that has become a fixture of 21st-century visual culture: recordings showing police brutality—grim evidence of actual violence that is used in calls for justice. In a wide-ranging discussion that moves from the cinema of taboo to the complexities of recordings of police violence, FC Digital Editor Violet Lucca spoke with Pinkerton, critic and programmer Ashley Clark, and New Yorker video producer (and former FC intern) Cassie da Costa.
Movie Meltdown - Episode 338 This week we talk comedy, road trips and lots and lots of horror with comedian Derek Sheen. And while we figure out just where he took a left turn into a time hole, we also discuss... black and white monster movies, Phantasm, immediate descent into madness, Zacherle, Shock Waves, bag pipes, Scott Mosier, what is the marketability of this movie, Tom Savini, a car is essentially a bathroom without a toilet, Slumber Party Massacre, I just feel like there's something in the film that's going to manifest itself in the room, Zelda Rubinstein, the world was yours, John Carpenter, Maniac, Tales From The Crypt, Don't Look Now, White of the Eye, I've always wanted to be on-stage, you found a bunch of reels of 8mm can and this is what happened, Sleepaway Camp, the biggest horror now is trust, Children Shouldn't Play with Dead Things, From Beyond, self-aware horror, Chris Hardwick, Friday the 13th, The Devil's Rain, I shouldn't be playing this in my house... something malevolent is in the film - and I don't like it, Demons, having faith in the filmmaker, When a Stranger Calls, Asylum, Mondo Cane, having perfect pitch, understanding isolation, Black Christmas, The Witch, Matthew Fox, Powerball winners, Let's Scare Jessica to Death, he's a giant baby man, people are trying too hard to create content, The Accused, you're given the gift of doubt, Basket Case, it's all about the eyes, horror and suspense are very different, Leatherface on his downtime, what scares people is the unknown, Bone Tomahawk, this sad gorgeous cadenza, it's like a long-form Ramones video, Beyond the Door, crippling stage fright, there was no other distraction... other then the darkness, if you walk into it as a horror movie - it's going to break your brain, Martha Splatterhead, The Sentinel, compartmentalization, Forensic Files, what scares people is what's beyond the veil, Kill List, horror is dread, full of self-loathing, well I have to go to bed now, making chili out of people, an STD metaphor, the Serbian porn industry, it was just more claustrophobic to be watching movies like that knowing that the entire world was asleep, reconciling grief, Brewster's Millions, they confuse murder with horror, Anthony Jeselnik, you can't have a zombie apocalypse, at least I'm not filled with demons, B.o.B's theory, there isn't any alone time, weirdly titillated, birthing torsos, whistling past the graveyard, the closet door slowly opening, when you leave the theater it makes you look at every single person on the street, the Eyes Wide Shut syndrome, filled with asbestos, blood and gravity, when you remove reason completely... that's where horror comes in. Spoiler Alert: Some end of the movie spoilers for Friday the 13th, Sleepaway Camp, Session 9... oh and Derek completely destroys the myth of a zombie apocalypse. You have been warned! "Give me something that permeates the very fabric of my belief system." For more of Derek's comedy, records and tour dates, go to: http://derektime.com/

The second episode of the show featured a real mixed bag of items and covered many aspects of the alternative arts. There is a review of a book called “The Geek Magician's Cookbook” by Mat Parrot which explains the secrets of sideshow performers, exploring bizarre music we look at the disturbing song ‘Hamburger Lady' by Throbbing Gristle and talk about the horrific real-life story that inspired it. Bizarre cinema fans are catered for with our look at the 1960s Italian ‘shockumentary', Mondo Cane which featured strange and disturbing events from around the world all set to a soundtrack of easy listening grooves. We also discuss the difference between the US and UK celebrations of Halloween and how it is seen and viewed very differently in both places. The first Paranormal Corner goes into the depth about the rather strange disappearance of student Elisa Lam and the various theories behind this odd and disturbing event.
