In this episode we hear from both former President Gerald Ford and his wife Betty Ford from an in-depth interview from a 1996 CNN Special "Riding the Tiger".  In it they discuss the feelings they had as they assumed the Presidency in the most difficult of circumstances, why he decided to grant former President Nixon a pardon, and how they dealt with the traumatizing two assassination attempts. The only two assassination attempts committed by women, Squeaky Fromme, and Sarah Jane Moore. This episode will also have the news footage of the times and an incredible CNN interview with one of the attempted assassins herself, Sarah Jane Moore. The Ford's themselves share the story with an incredible amount of humor and grace.  Then we look back at this most impressive of First Ladies, Betty Ford. She was strong, independent, and faced life with an amazing combination of strength, transparency,  and vulnerability. Traits  we rarely see in politics any longer. She changed the role of the First Lady more profoundly than just about any First Lady up to that time. She shared the ups and downs of her life battling breast cancer, dealing with rebellious teenage children, and then her own personal battle with addiction. It is an interesting look at a fascinating an admirable lady. TAG: Talking About Guns“Talking About Guns” (TAG) is a podcast created to demystify a typically loaded and...Listen on: Apple Podcasts Spotify Questions or comments at , Randalrgw1@aol.com , https://twitter.com/randal_wallace , and http://www.randalwallace.com/Please Leave us a review at wherever you get your podcastsThanks for listening!!

Dawn and guest, Brian Kiley, were backstage at a comedy show when they first realized their shared love for History. In this episode, the two get to really let their nerd-flag fly and take turns sharing their favorite LOL moments from a wide variety of people, places and timelines. Prepare to feel (comparatively) less stupid in this episode devoted to History's Great Mistakes:00:04:40 - Before we dig deep in annals of history, we learn about Brian Kiley. How he first came to comedy, his Emmy nominations and wins for Conan O'Brien and Ellen - and how one prepares to make a 'last minute' appearance on Letterman. 00:10:43 - In addition to being a comedy writer, Brian Kiley is also a fiction-writer with two novels: The Astounding Misadventures of Rory Collins and Maybe Kevin.00:16:11 - Dawn finds herself in "nerd Paradise" as they prepare to jump in and swim around in the HILF of Great Mistakes.00:18:17 - Brian kicks things off with a hilarious and are-you-kidding-me nugget from our friends, the Pilgrims, and a certain 7' Native American. 00:20:54 - Dawn tells the story of The Children's Crusade - a tragically face-palming blip in the holy wars of Middle Ages in which a 12 year-old boy led over 30,000 children, on foot, across Europe to reclaim Jerusalem by slaying the enemy with their innocence... I know, right? 00:25:38 - It's Brian's turn and he brings us a moment featured in the movie THE RIGHT STUFF, in which astronaut John Glenn is temporarily mesmerized by brilliant otherworld particles in space... that turned out to be anything but. 00:27:33 - Dawn illustrates the ridiculous story of TULIP MANIA, when the Netherlands found themselves in the midst of the first economic bubble... but it was so pretty!BREAK00:33:22 - Before we jump back in, Dawn asks Brian if there is a comedian he can trace back to the origin of his interest in comedy, and he can:  Dick Gregory. 00:35:13 - Brian delivers the next LOL-HILF on his list, the hilarious story of the first hot-air ballon in France and the bizarre and yet totally predictable way that the people who see it react. 00:38:27 - In a one-two punch, Brian then tells the story of bright, yet unfortunate President Jimmy Carter and why his 2nd term seemed doomed to failure from the launch. 00:43:13 - It's Dawn's turn with a HILF of the worst building in London 'The Fryscraper' - and good/bad news - you can visit it to this day... and if you do, PLEASE SEND VIDEO. 00:48:57 - Brian was with his son in DC when he saw a misprinted headline from 1976 that suggested that two of the oldest, whitest, straightest guys in American politics just made-out in New Hampshire.00:52:00 - Wait til you hear what attempted presidential assassin, Squeaky Fromme, said as Gerald Ford's security took her down. 00:55:50 - Before I let him go, Brian delivers one more nugget about a presidential pet that would have been a welcome guest on HILF... if not a host. ---THANK YOU so much for listening. Many adults and children are thought to have died in the house including the doctor's wife Jessie. The house has so much activity, it is thought to be one of the most haunted locations in America and is open for ghost hunting. It seems ridiculous now, imagining parents of a 17 year old agreeing to send her on a road trip across the country with her 18 year old sister to perform their music at small venues, mostly on college campuses. But that's exactly what Terre & Maggie Roche's parents did. Terre's father even met with the principal of her high school where she was supposed to be for her senior year and negotiated her school work and exams to be completed in between their 6-week touring dates. Terre spent her 18th birthday in Spearfish, South Dakota. They were contracted for a performance in Missoula, Montana, next, and their car broke down in Billings, Montana. They grabbed their gear and hitchhiked to Missoula so they wouldn't break their contract. The biggest surprise to me was when Terre said being a musician was never her big dream, she sort of fell into the job. As pre-teens, Terre and her sister had been watching a video series to learn to play guitar, and made up new lyrics to a popular song for a local politician's candidacy and fundraising party. A variety of other candidates were in attendance and asked them to do the same thing for their parties. Eventually they were performing for the Governor's parties and caught the attention of a touring company. Ready to listen in? Great. Here are some links we promised for you: Down the Dream (from the Seductive Reasoning album) Elana James, Hot Club of Cow Town, Montana-based band, Terre Roche loves these guys! Seductive Reasoning Album on YouTube The Bitter End Club, NYC --- From her website: Terre Roche is a singer, songwriter, guitar player, teacher, author, innkeeper and founding member of the trio "The Roches". She has performed in many clubs and concert halls throughout the US and Europe and appeared on numerous TV shows over the course of her 45 year career. She's a member of the band "Afro-Jersey" and co-creator with jazz pianist Garry Dial of "Us an'Them", a collection of national anthems from 16 nations. Her composition "Star of Wonder" has become a favorite repertoire piece in choirs around the world. At the other end of the spectrum Terre shrieked her way to modest cult status as the voice on Robert Fripp's album "Exposure". She sang the role of Squeaky Fromme in John Moran's avant-garde opera "The Manson Family". Terre is the author of "Blabbermouth", a memoir about her surprising journey coming of age as a female musician in the 1970's. She's worked with Paul Simon, Philip Glass, Linda Ronstadt, Meredith Monk, Don Was, The Muscle Shoals Swampers, Robert Fripp, Tracey Ullman, Kathy Mattea and Garry Dial among others. --- ABOUT SARAH: "Uncovering the right stories for the right audiences so executives, leaders, public speakers, and job seekers can clearly and actively demonstrate their character, values, and vision." In my work with coaching clients, I guide people to improve their communication using storytelling as the foundation of our work together. What I've realized over years of coaching and podcasting is that the majority of people don't realize the impact of the stories they share - on their internal messages, and on the people they're sharing them with. My work with leaders and people who aspire to be leaders follows a similar path to the interviews on my podcast, uncovering pivotal moments in their lives and learning how to share them to connect more authentically with others, to make their presentations and speaking more engaging, to reveal patterns that have kept them stuck or moved them forward, and to improve their relationships at work and at home. The audiobook, Your Stories Don't Define You, How You Tell Them Will is now available! Included with your purchase are two bonus tracks, songs recorded by Sarah's band, Spare Change, in her living room in Montana.

The Manson Murders are captivating, not just because of the shocking nature of the crimes or the involvement of actual Hollywood celebrities. They are also a metaphor about the end of the 60s, a bleak reminder that movements are as much about the people in them as they are about the ideas they espouse. A dark undercurrent ran through the Sixties that goes completely against the narrative of “Free Love,” one that turned women into objects of a movement that was meant to liberate them. The story of the Manson Murders is about the disaffected women of America during a time of social upheaval finding something they thought they could belong to. They were Orphans, runaways, and rebels, teenage girls and young women living at the margins of society. This was a time of “dropping out,” literally leaving society to find a more personal, transcendentalist experience. What that often meant was ignoring all traditional familial structures, and when that happens, people tend to fall through the cracks. That’s true with Dianne “Snake” Lake—author of Member of the Family—and Squeaky Fromme and plenty of the other members of the family. One of the ironies of the freedom associated with the late Sixties is that people still nevertheless fell victim to the need for an authoritarian figure, someone whom they thought they could trust and put all their faith in. That is, ultimately, the story of Charles Manson and young women and men who made up his family. This is just a slice of that story, and I hope I tell it well. Ever since the shockingly gruesome Tate-LaBianca murders of August 1969, The Manson Family have cast a long shadow over not only the 60s counterculture and its images of free loving, acid-dropping, Establishment challenging, hippie flower children but also American culture as a whole. Rather than ushering in the fabled Age of Aquarius where peace and love would reign supreme, it appeared that the promise of "The Psychedelic Sixties" had ended with an unimaginably wanton act of violence and bloodshed. The clarion call of Dr. Timothy Leary and the Woodstock Generation to "Turn On, Tune In, and Drop Out" seemed to take on a much more sinister meaning as Charles Manson and those who lived by his side in the desert mountains of California became popular culture's de facto avatar for evil in the latter 20th century. Coupled with the January election of President Richard Nixon, who successfully campaigned under on "Law and Order" platform that promised reaffirm the Establishment status quo, the saga of the Manson Family spelled the grim end of an era and its dashed hopes for the so-called Age of Aquarius. Perhaps that is why, a half century later, the faint echoes of the Manson Family and the Tate-LaBianca murders reverberate within popular culture. Through the decades there's been endless documentaries, movies, TV shows, books, and more either inspired by, based on, or seeking to make sense of it all. There's even been alternative theories proposed to challenge prosecutor's Vincent Bugliosi's Helter Skelter telling of the whole twisted affair. Some, such as the controversial Nikolas Schreck, have argued that the Tate-LaBianca murders were a drug burn gone awry. Others, most notably the late conspiracy-minded radio host Mae Brussell, have speculated that the murders were a plot to crush the counterculture and that the Manson Family were products of the CIA's Cold War-era mind control experiments with the now infamous MK ULTRA project. Ed Sanders, the poet and counterculture icon of the seminal hippie folk-rock band The Fugs, attempted to draw a connection between Manson and a little-know cult with the ominous name The Process Church of the Final Judgment in his 1971 chronicle of the case THE FAMILY. And, of course, there are those who believe that Bugliosi's account of the events, as detailed in his 1974 best-seller HELTER SKELTER, remains the definitive final word on the whole matter. After all these years one could be forgiven for thinking that Charles Manson's death on November 19, 2017 from a cardiac arrest would be the nail in the coffin for his and The Manson Family's hold on the popular imagination. And yet multiple major motion pictures since have been based on, inspired/influenced by, or involved the Manson saga including the Hillary Duff-starring THE HAUNTING OF SHARON TATE, heavy-metal-rocker-turned-horror-filmmaker Rob Zombie's gory 3 FROM HELL, American Psycho director Mary Harron's CHARLIE SAYS, and, of course, Quentin Tarantino's ONCE UPON A TIME IN HOLLYWOOD. Additionally, new books continued to be published on the subject including CREEPY CRAWL: CHARLES MANSON AND THE MANY LIVES OF AMERICA'S MOST INFAMOUS FAMILY by Jeffrey Melnick, which offered a cultural study of the Manson Family and its influence on the American psyche to this very day, and CHAOS: CHARLES MANSON, THE CIA, AND THE SECRET HISTORY OF THE SIXTIES by journalist Tom O'Neill. The latter book challenged Vincent Bugliosi's generally accepted HELTER SKELTER by delving into alternative theories related to the Family as well as the murders and became something of a sleeper hit covered by outlets such as The New York Times, The Washington Post, and The Guardian upon its publication in the summer of 2019. What is it the continues to fascinate so many about The Manson Family? Why the continued popularity of alternative theories to explain the murders? What, if anything, does the Family and the Tate-LaBianca murders mean in the context of the peace and love counterculture of the 1960s? Filmmaker Lonnie Martin attempts to address these questions without finding the elusive answers in his fascinating and engrossing new movie THE LAST OF THE MANSON GIRLS. Based on the essay "My Acid Trip with Squeaky Fromme" by late counterculture legend and self-described "investigative satirist" Paul Krassner, THE LAST OF THE MANSON GIRLS follows Krassner's (played here by Elliot Kashner) attempt to investigate and unravel The Manson Family saga after being spurred on by the conspiracy-minded California radio fixture Mae Brussell (Robin Reck). Despite his admitted skepticism toward Brussell's theories, Krassner find himself drawn into chasing the phantoms of the Manson story and, in an effort to find them, decides to spend an acid-tripping day with the three remaining members of Charlie's Family that aren't confined to a cold cell: Lynette "Squeaky" Fromme (Jen Bevan), Sandra Good (Cindy Marie Martin), and Brenda McCann (Sarah Taurchini). Alternately scared and attracted to the trio, Krassner ends up not only chasing phantoms but also getting to know THE LAST OF THE MANSON GIRLS and confronting his own demons in the acid-drenched process. Elliot Kashner as Paul Krassner hanging out with THE LAST OF THE MANSON GIRLS (Cindy Marie Martin, Jen Bevan, and Sarah Taurchini) Cindy Marie Martin as Sandra Good in THE LAST OF THE MANSON GIRLS Jen Bevan as Lynette "Squeaky" Fromme in THE LAST OF THE MANSON GIRLS The director of THE LAST OF THE MANSON GIRLS, filmmaker Lonnie Martin, joins us to discuss the movie, its character-driven nature, the role of gender in the movie, how the male gaze plays into the story, how it started out as a Master's thesis, his correspondence with Paul Krassner, what interested him about "Squeaky" Fromme as a primary subjective for a narrative film, working with the actors and actresses on who starred in it, the film's major themes, the Sixties counterculture, and much, much more. In 1969, Ivor Davis was an award-winning foreign correspondent for London's Daily Express, living in Los Angles, and feeling as many did in LA's affluent neighborhoods, that his life was fairly safe and insulated from crime. But in August of that year, when the followers of Charles Manson made headlines with one of the most brutal murder rampages of the 20th Century...an attack on wealthy actress Sharon Tate and others in Hollywood's most desired neighborhoods, Davis was chilled and intrigued. Grabbing his tape recorder, he immediately went to the courthouse in Inyo County Courthouse where Manson was being held and then out to the Spahn Ranch, where members of Manson's cult who had not been arrested were still hanging out. For three long days, Davis interviewed and became intimately familiar with Manson's followers and took copious notes on the gruesome true story that evolved into his award-winning book Five To Die, released in 1970. This book was so accurate and detailed that it was adopted as part of the Manson Trial court record. Now, 50 years later, Davis has released Manson Exposed, a much more in-depth study of the hideous but historical murders, incorporating information from the trial, and events that have ensued during the last five decades. He talks about the threat on his life from Squeaky Fromme and her later threat to the life of a U.S. President. And he reveals what has transpired with Manson in the years after the horror of 1969.In this recording, Lanea Stagg of The Recipe Records Series and Jude Southerland Kessler of The John Lennon Series of narrative biographies, sit down with Davis to suss out how his new book, Manson Exposed, is different from Five to Die. They discuss the later developments in the Manson case and address the rumor that The Beatles' song, "Helter Skelter" was Manson's motivation for the killing. Davis also talks about other historic events of the 1960's including his journalistic presence at the admission of James Meredith into Ole Miss, his presence with The Beatles on the 1964 North American Tour, and his presence with The Beatles on the night they met Elvis, 1965. You won't want to miss this exciting half-hour with Ivor Davis! Witty, informed, and brilliant, he will have you captivated.

Then, Squeaky Fromme and Sarah Jane Moore's attempts on President Ford in what Rachel calls "Manson Family part 4 (And Rachel sings Sondheim.)  Background info in this episode comes from a variety of sources, including the Assassinations episodes of Caustic Soda and Wine and Crime. Part II of our three-week ASSASSINS Extravaganza and we go through the second half of Stephen Sondheim and John Weidman’s musical about the dark side of American History. Topics include: “Squeaky” Fromme, Sarah Jane Moore, John Hinkley, and is there such a thing as a sympathetic murderer? Disclaimer: ASSASSINS is a dark show that deals with dark themes, some of which you may find disturbing. Also the recording features numerous gunshots, some of which I have included in both episodes. If any of these things bother and/or trigger you, I will understand if you take a break and rejoin THE ORIGINAL CAST in August. I hope you enjoy this deep-dive into a show I consider to be one of the best musicals ever written. The Manson Family had one last horrific day in the spotlight in September 1975, with the attempted assassination of President Gerald Ford in Sacramento, CA. Lynette "Squeaky" Fromme walked up to President Ford at an event where he was scheduled to give a speech and pointed a Colt .45 at him. I won't reveal the ending of that story, but you probably can guess, since Ford died in 2006. (Spoiler!) Charles Manson spent most of his adult life preaching about a revolution, though his was mostly about racial hatred and professional jealousy -- Manson wanted to be a rock star -- and yet this random event would be the closest he or any of his members would get to creating a watershed in American politics. Squeaky Fromme was one of the earliest and most ardent supporters of Charles Manson and the Manson Family. During the trial over the Tate-Labianca murders, Fromme set up media appearances and interviews for the Manson Family and its members. She and other Family members camped outside the trial, where Charles Manson and the other girls made a complete mockery of the justice system. Squeaky Fromme would later go on to write a 600-page unpublished manuscript about her time with the Manson Family. She was paroled in 2009 for her attempt at President Gerald Ford's life, the first in two assassination attempts that September in 1975. This episode corresponds with the shooting today in Washington, DC that injured Rep. Steve Scalise and three others, as members of Congress practicing for an annual baseball game. A lone gunman upset about the election of Donald Trump opened fire on the senators and congresspeople with what appears to be an assault weapon. The gunman was shot and killed, and the four victims shot by the assailant are, at present moment, alive and doing well. I hope this event does not become typical, and I also hope it does not prevent our elected representatives from doing their jobs. Plug! My third novel, Dirt Merchant, on sale now!
