This one is from the vault. If you haven't seen Mad Hot Ballroom from director Marilyn Agrelo, stop now and go check it out. It's a classic and a masterpiece. Centered around a ballroom dancing competition for fifth grade dance teams in New York City elementary schools, Agrelo captures a genuine and life-affirming transformation as a group of children evolve from reticent novices to confident contestants versed in the Latin styles of foxtrot, merengue and rumba. Agrelo shares with Tiller the challenges of capturing the spirit of New York City (4:25), casting the right teachers and kid dancers (14:10), the mechanics of verité filming and simultaneous editing (21:22), the art of directing kids (28:50), being validated by local criminals (32:45), and the film's shocking critical reception (42:00). Catherine Charlton, Executive Director, and Andrew Polunin, Artistic & Education Director of Dancing Classrooms Philly, discuss their program, that teaches social dancing to 5th and 8th grade classes to Delaware Valley schools who are lack arts and music programming. Founded by Broadway dancer Pierre Dulaine and featured in the film, Mad Hot Ballroom, the 20-week class teaches the entire grade classic dances such as the Merengue, Foxtrot, Swing and the Waltz, a process that helps students develop self–esteem, social awareness, mutual respect, teamwork and joy. In addition to learning the dances, students are engaged in academic development by researching cultures, creating art, and writing self-reflection papers. The chapter was the first to adopt round-robin, gender-neutral dance partners so that no student has to lead or follow, and during the COVID years when touching wasn't possible, they added Hip-hop, Latin, and K-pop. These dance programs offer more flexibility for schools, are more manageable for younger students, and focus on cultures that influenced the dances. Everyone participates, with non-dancing students providing music or writing about the program, and at the end of the dance residency the students perform a final showcase for families and friends and student who wish to continue are eligible to join the Saturday Academy where they can learn more steps and dances and meet other dancers from other schools. In addition to their flagship course, they have a variety of social dance programs for students from K through 12th grade, including in-school and after-school assemblies and residencies, community workshops, and performances opportunities to cultivate essential life skills in students. Classes are taught by dancing professionals who are trained to teach in the Dancing Classrooms method.   To learn more, check their calendar of events, to donate or enroll your school, visit dancingclassroomsphilly.org

If I never hear the term “Starving Artist” again, I will be a very happy person! In this episode, I speak with concert pianist Emile Pandolfi about how he's built a lucrative lifelong career as a musician. If you are stuck in a creative rut, or are worried about making enough from your creative endeavors, this is the episode for you. As a creative, it can be so easy to critique ourselves so much that we end up taking the joy out of what we once loved! We talk about how creative people can find ways to make money from their art without putting so much pressure on it that it becomes uninspiring/un-fun. Emile has enjoyed a successful career in the area of solo piano "commercial" music for the past 35 years. He has recorded 30 albums which sold 4.5 million units, (before CDs became dinosaurs) and he has surpassed 750 million streams on the various platforms. He continues to do live concerts and records his signature arrangements of well-known pop songs from movies, musicals, and the American Songbook. This week I want to challenge you to think of all the different ways you consume art, in all its form. If you want to become more artistic, understand what inspires you and what you enjoy. Aired: 7/21/13 This week we'll spend the hour with RAFE ESQUITH, who's been teaching fifth graders in LA's Hobart Elementary public school for nearly thirty years. Now a teacher of teachers, he recently returned from doing that in China. I first learned of Rafe's work in 2005, when POV the PBS film series pitched me a documentary, THE HOBART SHAKESPEARIANS, about the full Shakespeare productions that his students - most from families where English is not the primary language - perform each year. The film was directed by MEL STUART, a wonderful director of at least two landmark films - the 1971 Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory with Gene Wilder and 1973's WATTSTAX concert film of funky music and Black Power. Mel Stuart passed away a little less than a year ago. And he is missed. In September 2005, introducing my interview with Rafe and Mel about the film , I said this: Documentaries may be giving us what we hunger for. March of the Penguins, Mad Hot Ballroom and The Hobart Shakespeareans are documentaries about goodness, dedication, and purpose, and whether penguins or fifth graders, they're about respect and treating others well. Each of these films made me giggle, and each brought me to tears. There's something joyfully and painfully touching when we see the life force in action with purpose. When so much is going wrong, from Iraq to New Orleans, I think we need to see these things. Eight years later, Rafe Esquith continues to leads fifth graders at one of the nation's largest inner-city grade schools through an uncompromising curriculum of English, mathematics, geography and literature. His classroom mottos are "Be nice. Work hard." and "There are no shortcuts." Despite language barriers and poverty, many attend outstanding colleges. Esquith expects the best from these kids no matter what their backgrounds, and he backs up that expectation by giving them the educational resources to defy the odds.
