Dr. Laura welcomes Giselle Kovary, a generational expert and Head of Learning and Development at Optimus SBR, to talk about the different generations in today's workplaces. Giselle has 25 years of experience in learning and development, has worked with over 26 Fortune 500 companies, and is the co-author of two books: Loyalty Unplugged and Upgrade Now. Dr. Laura and Giselle explore the differences in the five generations at work and how to harness their unique strengths and skills into a cohesive workplace. Giselle defines the five generations by age group as Traditionalists, from 79 to 100; Baby Boomers, from 60 to 78; Gen X, from 44 to 59; Millennials, from 29 to 43; and Gen Z, from 12 to 28. She also stresses, however, that age alone does not define a generation; how a person identifies plays a key part as well. For example, a Millennial may identify as Traditionalist in mindset and this needs to be accounted for when assessing generational differences. Giselle and Dr. Laura discuss how generational identities assist understanding at a macro level but that within organizations it's vital to understand employees at a micro level, as individuals, as well. Giselle offers insights into where different generational identities collaborate well and where clashes often occur, based on her studies and experience. These insights serve to highlight where organizations must strengthen communication and understanding in order to best utilize the strengths each generation brings to work.“Not everyone in a generation is going to align with this. But after over 20 years, I have literally thousands of anecdotes of when people will come up and say, oh my goodness, you just described me, or you described my children, you described my partner. And it's because there is enough of a baseline to say this is what this generation believes and thinks, and we want to look at it from that perspective. The other piece… is it's less important the year you're born and more about your generational identity. How do you identify?” Giselle KovaryWatch this episode on Dr. Laura's YouTube channelAbout Giselle Kovary, M.A.:As Head of Learning & Development at Optimus SBR, Giselle is dedicated to building strategies and programs that help clients target, motivate and engage employees in order to increase performance and productivity. When President Biden withdrew from the 2024 presidential campaign last month and endorsed Vice President Kamala Harris to be the Democratic Party's nominee, the move resulted in several historical firsts. It also placed a swift focus on intersectionality and identity politics as tensions mount in the final stretch of the 2024 election cycle. Littler Principal Cindy-Ann Thomas and her guests, University of North Carolina (Charlotte) Associate Chair of Communications Studies, Professor Debra C. Smith, and Littler Shareholder Bradford Kelley, explore: - The interplay of race, gender, and ethnicity for women in leadership and how they detract from meaningful conversations about suitability and competence; - Why and how topics like appearance, attire, voice pitch/tone, laughter, temperament, and likeability continue to persist so disproportionately for women; - The real meaning of “DEI Hire” and other coded terms; - How the perpetuation of inappropriate labels and evaluation criteria hinder progress for members of historically minoritized populations in key leadership roles – beyond the position of POTUS; - The role that the media and big tech ecosystem play in normalizing coded language, microaggressions, and stereotypes; - How biased messaging and beliefs about political candidates spill into workplaces; and - Possible guidelines – and guardrails - for implementing standards of conduct and handling discussions of politically diverse perspectives present in the workplace. This podcast offers an in-depth discussion about how and why an increasingly contentious election cycle is having such a taxing and divisive impact for so many.

On today's episode of The Ramp. It. Up! Podcast we are wrapping up Women's History Month with a good friend of mine, Erin Taylor.Get To Know Our Guest For more than 15 years, Erin Taylor has dedicated herself to advocating for health equity and promoting wellness by helping eliminate barriers and health disparities for disabled people throughout Oregon. She does this by interweaving equity, inclusion, and accessibility throughout her work and being intentional in her commitment to diversifying awareness of the vast range of disability experiences and identities. Ensuring that disabled people's voices are heard, their intersectionality is acknowledged, and their needs are met is imperative in Taylor's work. Even though Taylor's roots are with people with intellectual disabilities, she does her current work through a cross-disability lens.Taylor holds an M.A. in Disability Studies from City University New York (CUNY) and a B.A. in Communications Studies focusing on Community Health Education from Western Oregon University. She has built a strong foundation as a master trainer with expertise in creating accessible, universal, and inclusive materials for trainings, workshops, and curricula for Oregon Health and Science University's Oregon Office on Disability and Health and University Center for Excellence in Developmental Disabilities. During the pandemic, Taylor saw a need to bring education and awareness around disability because of the injustices she saw. She recognizes that the topic of disability is very complex, nuanced, and layered, so Taylor and her partner started AIM-4-Access (Accessibility and Inclusion Matters). Creating a business allows Taylor and her partner to hold space for these conversations in ways that will leave people understanding the 'why' you should care to make our world inclusive and accessible. This business also allows Taylor to bring her passion for health promotion back into her work.Erin identifies as having non-apparent disabilities and is deeply involved and integrated with her peers from the local cross-disability, LGBTIA2S+, and social justice communities. In her free time, Taylor is a musician who enjoys photography and the beauty of the PNW. I have to confess something: I love challenges. And when you're a podcaster, what's a better challenge than dedicating an episode to… visualization? Impossible you say? Well, challenge accepted! Thankfully, I got the help of a visualization Avenger for this episode — namely, Matthew Kay. Matt is an Assistant Professor jointly appointed in Computer Science and Communications Studies at Northwestern University, where he co-directs the Midwest Uncertainty Collective — I know, it's a pretty cool name for a lab. He works in human-computer interaction and information visualization, and especially in uncertainty visualization. He also builds tools to support uncertainty visualization in R. In particular, he's the author of the tidybayes and ggdist R packages, and wrote the random variable interface in the posterior package. I promise, you won't be uncertain about the importance of uncertainty visualization after that… Our theme music is « Good Bayesian », by Baba Brinkman (feat MC Lars and Mega Ran). Carolyn Bailey Lewis is a woman who has been determined to always push herself and to set new standards throughout her career. She has been a pioneer in her field, but it hasn't been easy. While forging her path, as a black woman, Carolyn has had to fight battles against racism, bigotry, and prejudice as well as sexism. Coming from the small town of Bluefield, West Virginia where she attended segregated schools and lived in a segregated neighborhood, Carolyn became the only black woman in her class of journalism students at West Virginia University. Being able to adapt to a “white world” and function as the only person of color took great strength, will, and dexterity. In 1971, Carolyn became the first black woman to graduate from the Perley I Reed School of Journalism, now the Reed College of Media at West Virginia University. She continued her trailblazing in 1993 when she became the first African American woman named to manage a full-service public television station in the continental United States at WNPB-TV in Morgantown. In 1997, she became the Director and General Manager of WOUB Public Media at Ohio University, where she stayed until her retirement. That same year she also became an ordained minister. During her 14 years at WOUB, Carolyn rose nationally in the ranks of public broadcasting. She was a member of the Board of Trustees of the Association of Public Television Stations (APTS), a member of the Board of Directors of the National Education Telecommunications Association (NETA) and Chair of the PBS Advertising and Promotion Advisory Committee. But she wasn't finished. Against all odds and while confined to a wheelchair, she received her Doctor of Philosophy degree in Communications Studies – 36 years after her undergraduate degree from WVU. Most recently, she received the 2020 Medal of Merit for Professional Achievement from Ohio University. Currently, in her retirement Carolyn has authored a book, is the co-founder and chairman of the Dr. Carolyn Foster Bailey Lewis Family Foundation and is the co-founder and CEO of LifeDay Greeting Cards, Inc. Her LifeDay cards celebrate surviving a major life-altering event or monumental moment in life.

LaMonica Peters is a Broadcast Journalist for KFMB-TV in San Diego, California. Peters, fascination with broadcasting started with the Crenshaw High Cougar News. As Student Body President, I would address my classmates via closed-circuit TV. I'd also go to the top urban L.A. radio station to announce the most popular songs voted on by students. That was my first taste of being in broadcasting and I loved it! After finishing my Communications Studies degree at UCLA, I taught school in the Los Angeles Unified School District but ultimately, I decided to pursue my dream job as a Broadcast Journalist. I went back to radio where it all began to get my broadcasting career started. I volunteered at two local radio stations while still working full-time. I volunteered at KJLH-FM, a station I grew up listening to and where I learned the positive impact local media outlets can have on a community. I also worked at KPFK-FM, a public radio station in Los Angeles, where I hosted "The Peters Poll" as a part of a public affairs show. It was my first chance to use social media to interact directly with listeners. I'd pose a question to the audience about a hot topic on Facebook and then read some of their responses on air. After working in radio, I made the decision to pursue a career in television news. Soon after, I'd move to Greenville, MS to be the Weekend Anchor and Reporter at WXVT. I then moved to WCBI News in Columbus, MS. There I covered the devastation left behind after 23 tornadoes ripped through Mississippi on the same day, taking the lives of 14 people. I also interviewed Sabrina Butler, the only woman in America to be exonerated from death row, as she campaigned around the country to eliminate the death penalty. I was honored to be acknowledged by the Mississippi Associated Press for Public Affairs in 2014. I was awarded a 3-part series on breast cancer. My Aunt was diagnosed with breast cancer the year before and now thankfully she's a survivor. I also taught communications and theatre classes at Mississippi State University, the largest college in the state, as well as Mississippi Valley State University.

Very excited for today's studio chat with Natalie Clapp! Today's chat is all about her experiences working at a variety of manufacturing companies (lighting/upholstery/furniture) and networking til you find your niche. Natalie attended Illinois State University and did Communications Studies, Organizational & Leadership Communications. Upon graduation she moved to Charleston and ended up working at a high end lighting manufacturer called The Urban Electric Company before she moved to NYC. That is where she worked in design as a sales coordinator at Maharam. And now works at Walter K as the Sales Manager North America. She shares with us what her experience was like working at three different companies, with three very different product offerings! With this comes tons of knowledge on the product side, but most importantly how to help us designers find what we are looking for, especially when short on time (aka always) and a few tips on details we can include in our email requests!

Kelly Carlin has always been curious about the big questions of life. Watching her father, George Carlin, be an iconoclastic comedy legend certainly didn't hurt too. Like him she loves to use humor to question the status quo, and she loves to seek out the unique angle into any subject she tackles. But unlike him, she brings a more personal and emotional tone to her work. With her personal story, pathos, emotion and psychological insight she reveals the joy and challenges that comes with trying to live an authentic life. As a child, Kelly explored her own creativity by writing skits and doing imitations (her Ethel Merman was quite good for an eight year old), but began her professional life in her teens working behind the scenes with her father and mother, Brenda, on various shows for HBO that continued into her twenties. In 1993, at the ripe age of 30, she graduated from UCLA, Magna Cum Laude, with a B.A. in Communications Studies. While at UCLA, Kelly discovered her voice as a writer, which led her to a career in writing for film and TV with her husband Robert McCall. After her mother's death in 1997, Kelly found her true calling – autobiographical storytelling– through her first one-woman show, “Driven To Distraction.” In 2001, Kelly wanted to explore the intersection of human storytelling and one's inner psychological life. She pursued her masters in Jungian Depth Psychology from Pacifica Graduate institute where she studied mythology, Jungian psychology and the nexus of art and the sacred. Kelly explores the big questions and the intricacies of being human in her many iterations. She is a public speaker, hosts both “The Kelly Carlin Show” on SiriusXM, and “Waking from the American Dream” on SModcast Network, tours her newest one-woman show, “A Carlin Home Companion,” and is now an author. Her memoir “A Carlin Home Companion,” was published by St. Martin's Press to great reviews and success. In this episode, we talk about her ever-changing relationship to her father and his legacy, her path to rebirth through the myth of Demeter and Persephone and how because of her last name, wannabe comedians like me are driven to try out their shoddy "material" on her to solicit a laugh from the family of comic royalty.
