Offering great options for both martial and performance choreography applications. Sensei De Longis created and refined his “De Longis Rolling Loop” methodology based on five decades of European sword training with Maestro Ralph Faulkner, Filipino bladed weapons with Guro Dan Inosanto and Japanese katana with Kaiso Toshishiro Obata and Sensei Mathew Lynch. He often refers to the whip as a 'super-sonic flexible blade'. His unique methods utilize structure and alignment to produce explosive accurate energy with maximum efficiency and minimum effort and offers a variety of precision strikes and body envelopments at Long Range. The De Longis method also employs effective Medium and Close Range combative applications utilizing the companion hand as well as the Baton, Punyo / Pommel and ‘Big Loop' Thong for striking, redirecting, trapping and submission techniques. Sensei De Longis invited Senior Grand Master Ron Lew to join the exploration. SGM Lew developed his own unique close range bullwhip martial arts form called the Tibetan Wave, based on his work in Tai Chi, Tibetan energy work, and Cacoy Canete Doces Pares Eskrima and Eskrido. Dona a Radio Moody: https://www.moodyradio.org/givingapp/radio-moody?appeal=RMSR&UTM_CONTENT=donatenow&UTM_SOURCE=web&UTM_TERM=rm&UTM_MEDIUM=header&utm_campaign=ANNL&_gl=1%2a138ixmr%2a_ga%2aMjNmYTIxMWYtZWJlYS00OTAyLThjYTYtZTUyYzRmNDkwZDgz%2a_ga_4WH1937046%2aMTcwOTY1ODQyNi4zMSee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Happy New Year, everyone! Hope you're back rested and energized for 2024! We are kicking off new beginnings with an old friend…the prolific film and television producer, Monica Levinson. Some of her impressive credits include BORAT, BRUNO, ZOOLANDER, DODGEBALL, Larry David's CLEAR HISTORY, Tara Miele's WANDER DARKLY, David Oyelowo's THE WATER MAN and Aaron Sorkin's THE TRIAL OF THE CHICAGO 7. Starting her career in broadcast news in her hometown of Washington, D.C., Monica transitioned into narrative storytelling by working with visionary directors including Alan J. Pakula and Sidney Lumet. She most recently produced OLD DADS, the Netflix comedy written, directed and starring Bill Burr which did really well on the platform when it dropped last October. On top of a busy producing career, she is also an executive board member of AMPAS, PGA, DGA, and on the leadership team for the Women's Production Society. Mentorship is very important to her and she certainly walks the walk. I count myself lucky to know her as an ally and a mentor. She's constantly giving back and she drops lots of gems during out chat, such as: Jobs that aren't exactly what you want to be doing can provide a foundation for the jobs you want Filmmaking is a collaboration - be prepared but remember you're not alone Working in production is still creative! Happy listening! -cg
With the passing of director and cinematographer John Bailey, ASC, we are re-releasing our 2021 interview with him. He discusses his work on the film, Groundhog Day, and briefly touched on his other work. The screenplay is the most important part of a film, John believes. It can be a leap of faith to work with a first time director, when they don't have a body of work, so a good script is always a solid starting point. As the DP of Ordinary People, John noticed the craftsmanship of that particular screenplay, which was carefully written and structured for several years by screenwriter Alvin Sargent and first-time director Robert Redford. He knew right away it would become a meaningful and important film. Both Sargent and Redford won Academy Awards for their work as screenwriter and director, respectively, and Ordinary People won the Best Picture Oscar. Groundhog Day grabbed John immediately as an interesting and offbeat idea for a film, but no one guessed that it would actually become part of the film canon and popular culture. To this day, John is surprised when people tell him how much they like that film and how much it has touched people. The movie famously had its own chaos, since star Bill Murray and director Harold Ramis had a very combative relationship on set. John spent two years as the president of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. His passion was in furthering the Academy Film Archive, the Margaret Herrick Library, and other AMPAS charitable projects. He became frustrated with the industry's focus on the Academy's role in the Oscars and how much punditry went into how to fix the awards process. John was a veteran cinematographer who has left us with a huge amount of notable films, including “The Big Chill,” “As Good as it Gets,” “In the Line of Fire” and “The Accidental Tourist.” He will be missed. This week, we explore Chinese cuisine with cook and food writer Fuchsia Dunlop. In the west, misconceptions and prejudices surround Chinese food: that it's unhealthy, or oily, or simple. The Hollywood awards season is heating up, with every week seeing big-name Best Picture contenders going up on marquees across America. On this very special episode we have a full-length interview with Bruce Davis, executive director of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences for more than 20 years, who has a fascinating new book out that documents the behind-the-scenes history of the golden man himself: Oscar. Longtime listeners are well aware that host Bruce Miller has been an avid follower of all things Academy Awards since before he was covering the entertainment beat, so the conversation touches on loads of interesting anecdotes and revelations that Bruce Davis unearthed from some of the farthest flung parts of the AMPAS archives. You can order "The Academy and the Award" from Brandeis University Press. Amy E. Duddleston, ACE has over 30 years of experience in feature and television picture editing. Starting out as an Apprentice Editor, she made her way up to Assistant Editor, working on films like My Own Private Idaho, Corrina, Corrina, and To Die For. As an editor, she has cut 20 features, including High Art, Laurel Canyon, Elegy and Gus Van Sant's remake of Psycho, as well as nearly 80 hours of television on series such as Dexter, The Killing, Vida, Hunters and most recently, Mare of Easttown, for which she received two 2021 Emmy Award nominations. She is also a member of American Cinema Editors, AMPAS and the Television Academy. On this episode of Screen Culture, Amy recounts how she discovered editing after being “enthralled” by Raging Bull and inspired by the work of editors such as Dede Allen. She shares how her journey as a young apprentice and then assistant editor led her to working out of Gus Van Sant's house during production of the now-iconic My Own Private Idaho, her collaboration with Van Sant on projects including a shot-for-shot remake of Psycho, her work with filmmaker Lisa Cholodenko on films including the groundbreaking High Art, and her recent work in television shaping prestige series such as Mare of Easttown.Amy and Lisa also cover:What it's like to work on a project, like My Own Private Idaho, that becomes culturally iconic: “Most of the time when you're working on something, you just hope people see it”How allowing time for ideas and approaches to percolate is essential in film and TV editing—rushing is the enemy of artThat the process of editing great actors—including Frances McDormand, Kate Winslet, and Patricia Clarkson—is challenging to describe: “You're just trying to follow the rhythms”How Amy turned down an offer to work on Good Will Hunting to edit her friend Lisa Cholodenko's first film, High Art, which became a Sundance sensationHow High Art as an artifact of New Queer Cinema reflected cultural growth, as it's “not a shiny coming-out story,” and how art is essential for “creating space” for new stories and narratives around underrepresented groupsWhat it was like to experience Mare of Easttown's popularity: “The outpouring of love for the show was mind-blowing”Amy is on Twitter as @phantomframe.

This mid-week episode features Parasite as our 'Should Have Seen That By Now' movie since Dave, Australian native and AMPAS skeptic, decided he couldn't skip his monthly viewing of Solo: A Star Wars Story to see Parasite... for the past 18 months. One thing Dave is really good at though is timeliness. Like, if an episode has to come out and his co-host hasn't posted it, he's on it! If there's a 4-star international juggernaut of a film, however... In all seriousness, John and Jeff re-watched this film to prepare to grill Dave for his life choices and all we could do was talk about how great this movie is. Whether it's your first or last viewing, give it a 2021 look. It's on Hulu and it keeps aging well. Like Dave, who's age surprises everyone except his chiropractor. Episode 103 is probably the most important episode we have ever recorded. History was made on August 8th 2018 when the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences introduced three major new changes which rocked the industry. After years of making suggestions on what changes we would like to see The Academy introduce, none of the changes they actually announced pleased us one bit. Here to discuss all of this is Michael Schwartz, Ryan C. Showers, Celia Schlekewey, Kt Schaefer, Josh Parham & Jacey Aldredge as we try to answer your questions and ask some of our own regarding the recent decisions by AMPAS. The search for the Next Best Picture just got more complicated. Check out more on NextBestPicture.com Please subscribe on...
