Portia May White was a operatic contralto, known for becoming the first Black Canadian concert singer to achieve international fame. Born in 1911, White's formative years were spent performing in her father's church choir in Halifax, Nova Scotia. She competed in local singing competitions as a teenager and later trained at the Halifax Conservatory of Music. One of her most popular recordings was of the African-American spiritual "Think of Me". She also had a hit with the song "4 & 20 Elders". In 1944, Portia White made her international debut auditioning for the Metropolitan Opera. White became the first Canadian to sing at New York's Town Hall performance space. The New York Times reported her singing was "remarkable." White later completed tours throughout Europe, the Caribbean, Central and South America. When vocal difficulties and cancer eventually contributed to her retirement in 1952, White settled in Toronto and trained other Canadian musicians such as Lorne Greene of Bonanza TV fame, and famous pop singer Robert Goulet. Portia White was interviewed by CBC Television in 1958. One of White's final major public appearances was a special command performance for Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip in 1964. Portia White occasionally performed on American radio during the medium's golden age. We found one appearance on the show New World A'Comin in 1945, celebrating the Allied Victory in Europe during World War Two, and it's meaning to African-Americans. More at KRobCollection.com

Book: The Perks of Hospice: Stories of Love, Life, and Loss Website(s): http://lindamoran.org Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/Marbler/ Twitter: @LindaMoran3813 Linda Moran – writing since I was 12, and then a couple of decades later started making some sense, including a memoir…. The Perks of Hospice: Stories of Love, Life, and Loss. I write about a lot of topics, which is so different from starting to write when I was 12 and given a diary. I'd read The Diary of Anne Frank, so my parents bought me what could only be called a “calendar diary.” I had no clue what to write about – I didn't have “thoughts” worthy of going onto paper. I think I wrote a list of what I watched on television and my various heart-throbs (Kookie, a young Leslie Nielsen, Zorro, Robert Goulet…). I'm convinced one of the reasons I did well on term papers in college was because I knew my grammar, due to an amazing Latin teacher – Joan Daniels from Sterling High School in Somerdale, NJ changed my life. Years ago I wrote a thank you in a blog when I heard she had died – but I already had been by to see her and thank her for changing my life. Thanks to Google archive, I could find the blog, since it had already been permanently deleted by a well-known hosting service (25 years with the same web address, a great website, and over 1000 blogs…) It took many years to realize I truly did have something to say…in the form of romance writing. I was planning on becoming another Janet Dailey (Now it would be Nora Roberts). I have three unpublished romances, one of which had a really nice rejection letter (at least I thought so). From there I worked on education articles, including an unpublished mathematics book, “Whatever It Takes: The Journey to Mathematical Success.” It was accepted by a Tucson publisher…who was bought out by a larger Chicago press, and they “lost” my manuscript, as well as 300 pieces of original art illustrations. In retrospect it was a good thing, as I have since learned so much about teaching mathematics that the book would have been a serious flop. I did essays for a while, short writings about the joys and demands and incompetence within the education system, as well as stories about our fiber art creations. Then I had an idea for a novel about Arizona seceding from the US and becoming its own Christian republic. I started in 2013, before a previous president actually had been elected. I finished it in 2015 and shopped it around a bit. The few agents I heard from thought that even for “speculative fiction,” it was too far-fetched. Anyone reading it now would think I had written the current events of the day…but as a history major I interpreted events that did come to pass. I started writing on line in 2018 and everything changed for me. I had readers! I had commenters! I had so many things to say about the world…and then my husband went into hospice for two years, I became a widow, and I wrote about what I really know now – death and grief. I can't imagine not writing about life in these crazy times. My interests show up in education and world affairs. Just click and go exploring.

Send us a Text Message. This is the third of a multi-episode series in which I chat with Dr. Larissa ‘Kat' Tracey about literary representations of medieval adultery and its reality. In this episode Kat and I survey and discuss the major nineteenth- and twentieth-century literary treatments of medieval adultery, focusing on the stories of La(u)ncelot and Guinevere and of Tristan/Tristram and Isolde/Isolt/Iseult  The episode begins with an opera, Richard Wagner's extremely influential retelling of the tale, Tristan und Isolde. Although composed between 1857 and 1859, the opera did not premiere until 1865, because it was deemed too expensive to stage and its complex, innovative music was thought to be unperformable. We consider how Wagner reconceived his medieval source, Gottfried of Strassburg's thirteenth-century romance, through the lens of Schopenhauer's life-denying philosophy, and how in its composition art imitated life, as Wagner engaged in what was the very least an emotional affair with his wealthy Swiss patron's wife.  Kat and I then discuss the very different treatments of these Arthurian stories about adultery by three leading Victorian poets and one early twentieth-century American: the poet Laureate Alfred Lord Tennyson, the decadent aesthete Algernon Swinburne, the Pre-Raphaelite artist and author William Morris, and the popular American poet Edwin Arlington Robinson, whose now all-but-forgotten best-selling poem Tristram won the Pulitzer Prize in 1928. We then turn to how twentieth-century novelists have handled the moral issues arising from medieval adultery in their renditions of the Arthurian legend. The episode concludes with an analysis of adultery in a non-Arthurian medieval novel, Sigrid Undset's historical trilogy about fourteenth-century Norway, Kristin Lavransdatter (1920-1923), which earned the author the Noble Prize for Literature in 1928, the same year that Robinson's very different Tristram won the Pulitzer. Kat and I began this episode with the intention of covering both modern literature and movies dealing with medieval adultery. But it became clear as we were recording that a single episode would be very long. So we decided to talk about medieval adultery on film in a final, fourth episode, which I will be releasing in about a week's time. And that will be it for medieval adultery, although I plan to have Kat return in future to talk about a subject on which she has written extensively, torture and cruelty in medieval literature. As I have jokingly told her, she is my go to person for medieval perversities.  This episode contains two musical snippets:Wagner's “Prelude to the Liebestod [Love Death]” from his opera Tristan und Isolde, conducted by Arturo Toscanini (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lBFcDGTzgAI) “If Ever I Would Leave You” from the musical Camelot, lyrics and music by Lerner and Loewe and sung by Robert Goulet as Lancelot (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xL52hEArSfM) In my discussion of the literary texts, I drew upon the researches of several scholars, among them:John Deathridge, Wagner Beyond Good and Evil, University of California Press,  2008R.J.A. Kilbourn, “Redemption Revalued in Tristan und Isolde: Schopenhauer, Wagner, Nietzsche,” in University of Toronto Quarterly, Volume 67, Number 4, Fall 1998, pp. 781-788“Tristan und Isolde,” Wikipedia (yes, I do consult Wikipedia)“Listen on Podurama https://podurama.com Intro and exit music are by Alexander NakaradaIf you have questions, feel free to contact me at richard.abels54@gmail.com

TVC 644.6a: Greg Ehrbar discusses the Kino Lorber Blu-ray release of The Daydreamer (1966), a feature-length live-action and Animagic-animated adaptation of some of the most famous fairytales of Hans Christian Andersen that was produced by Arthur Rankin Jr. and Jules Bass, and which featured the talents of Hayley Mills, Tallulah Bankhead, Jack Guilford, Margaret Hamilton, Ray Bolger, Boris Karloff, Burl Ives, Victor Borge, Terry-Thomas, Ed Wynn, Patty Duke, and Robert Goulet. Though unsuccessful at the box office at the time it was originally released, The Daydreamer, in many respects, served as a precursor to the many television specials that Rankin-Bass produced throughout the 1970s. We start the first of a two-part series examining the musical Camelot, the Broadway hit based on T.H. White's The Once and Future King, which I recently re-read in preparation. For part one, we look at both the original cast recording from 1960, as well as two clips from the Ed Sullivan show, featuring Richard Burton as King Arthur and Julie Andrews as Guenevere. Unfortunately, this is all we could find of that particular version of the show. We were, however, able to find a 1981 stage revival starring Richard Harris and Meg Bussart and filmed for HBO.  The 1981 production differs from the original production, streamlining some elements, cutting some characters, but largely is the same show. In both cases, the effort to condense a 700-page novel into a two and a half hour musical greatly simplifies some of the driving philosophy of the book—as much a meditation on politics and the rise of fascism as it is a consciously-anachronistic fantasy and elegy for a dying world (very much reading like Lord of the Rings meets A Connecticut Yankee). However, focusing on the love triangle and Arthur's conundrum of balancing justice and mercy, might and right, makes for an effective musical, one which even influenced the popular culture conception of the then-current Kennedy administration. In our next episode, we will examine the 1967 film production of the same musical.   1960 Broadway Original Cast Recording: Starring Richard Burton, Julie Andrews, Robert Goulet, David Hurst, Robert Coote, Roddy McDowall, and Robin Stewart. 1981 Revival: Starring Richard Harris, Meg Bussert, Richard Muenz, James valentine, Barrie Ingham, Richard Backus, and Thor Fields. Just in time for the 35th anniversary of "Beetlejuice," the second episode of Season 3 is here!Released on March 30, 1988 (yes, it's technically a spring movie), "Beetlejuice" introduced the world to "the ghost with the most." Raf remembers this film really fondly, while Sarah was a little more apprehensive about it in her early years. But these days, both love revisiting it regularly, especially since it gives them the chance to talk about Tim Burton's overall career trajectory and goth representation in cinema. Plus, they've got hot takes on polyester blue leisure suits, Robert Goulet, and (yet again) Hot Topic. Sorry, Hot Topic.Put on your favorite Harry Belafonte record, grab a shrimp cocktail, and enjoy the hosts' thoughts on "Beetlejuice." Because now, it's SHOWTIME.

Jeremy James Miller is an American actor best known for his portrayal of Ben Seaver on Growing Pains and its two reunion movies. He also was the voice of Linus in Happy New Year, Charlie Brown and Snoopy the Musical.Miller was first cast in a McDonald's commercial and then began to land multiple guest roles in Charles in Charge, Different Strokes, Punky Brewster, and Pryor's Place. He was cast in the NBC mini series Deceptions with Barry Bostwick, Stephanie Powers, and Fairuza Balk before landing the role of Ben Seaver, the youngest son on Growing Pains. Miller was supposed to be a part of the cast of the PBS show Ghostwriter. The creator wanted to make him a mentor to the younger Ghostwriter members, but the producers decided it wasn't a good idea for the show to have an older ghostwriter team member and Miller was not invited back after shooting the pilot. As an actor, probably his most recognizable trademark is the "Ben Seaver Scream", which can be heard and seen in any number of Growing Pains episodes and during the closing credits of the movie Dickie Roberts: Former Child Star. After Growing Pains, Jeremy co starred as "Jake" in the TV movie Based on an Untrue Story with Morgan Fairchild, Robert Goulet, Rikki Lake, Dan Hedeya, Victoria Jackson, and Harvey Korman. He then decided to take a break from acting and attended the University of Southern California for a year where he studied drama. Soon after he began to pursue his passion for cooking and enrolled in the Culinary Arts program at Le Cordon Bleu which he left just short of graduating. Jeremy started his own catering company called "No Small Affair" as well as freelanced as a chef for multiple LA based catering companies. He also teaches private cooking classes and group cooking parties. Jeremy continues to pursue acting and went to Shanghai (where he enjoys a huge popularity and following) to co star in the film Milk and Fashion, He starred in a commercial for McDonald's "Dollar Menunaires" promotion shot as a parody of the VH1 series Best Week Ever. He has also been spotted in Boys and Girls Guide To Getting Down. He can be seen in four movies in 2009: Ditching Party, Never Have I Ever, The Fish and Tar Beach. He will also be co-starring in the upcoming horror film Awakening as well as two new shows; One a recurring role in the comedy - The Comeback Kids and one as the lead in the Paranormal Suspense Drama - 3rd Eye.Support the show

Before we get started I want to thank everyone for listening not just to last week’s Big 100th episode but all the time, every week. Since I mentioned the 100th let me quickly explain the weirdness that went on with it. This was only a YT problem. Though displaying the full length, time-wise, it would only play for 2 seconds on desktop computers! Mobile phones worked with the YT app as well as all the other streaming services. We just may end up with a whole row of that broadcast until the issue is resolved. It’s silly but we wouldn’t have it any other way. I also want to thank Jack Harte again for stopping by. And another enormous thank you to Joan McCool. Her dedication and time she lovingly put in to recording Norm is really unsurpassed. And I know she’ll be pleased with what I have to say next… “Dia huit” to our new listeners in Ireland! We’re ‘lucky’ to have you. If you recall, last month we had a SMQ and it was mentioned that we were going to be back in August with another. As promised, we are back. This is from August 17th, 1995. And this one is direct from the Ed Mullen Collection (EMC)! After approximately 26 years, Ed and I met for lunch and he arrived baring gifts. A lovely box full of SMQ’s and other treasures. We will meet again and I plan on having Mr. Ed on the show. These SMQ’s will be titled “The Ed Mullen Collection (EMC)” This being Volume 1 – All-Star Callers. Not only because of the excellent questions but there were a couple who were of some notoriety. Here we find Uncle Norm filling in for Bob Raleigh. Mike Epstein is producing. BTW, Mike is on that future guest hit list too. The Esteemed Panel: Norm Ed Mullen Jack Harte Where’s Tony? Fear not as I do appear after receiving treatment in the trainer’s room for a pulled music muscle. You know the categories. As always, before we begin, Ed reads the rules and makes them as clear as ever. Norm reiterates the rules with even more clarity. Those rules plague us, well, plague Norm really, throughout. Let me note here that, for some reason, we were accepting requests for particular decades! And taking questions for fun. The callers were as follows… Kevin in RI Barbara from Brookline Virginia in Roslindale Ben from Hudson Deedee in W. VA Deborah from Malden Bill in JP Ed from Cambridge Dana in Salem Jay from Bridgewater Sal in NH Chris from Roslindale Ginny from East Bridgewater David in Quincy Jim from Boston Bruce in NJ Enos from PA Bill in NH Charles in Plymouth Jerry from Natick – who, at the end of his call, says something we completely missed. Listen closely as it would have generated a bunch of questions from us if we were paying attention. Phil in Johnstown Toni from Braintree Steve in VA – Colonial Beach VA is Norm Nathan Country! Fred from ME – needs another certificate to finish wallpaper his bathroom. Linda from Quincy Joe in Providence RI Joe from Hazelton, PA – Hazelton PA is NN Country! Jay in Arlington – sang on the Gleason Show! Jack from Springfield – with some information And Mike in Springfield Some other fun: Ed makes a reference to a since long closed store. Certificates have many uses...if you ever receive them. I contribute a little-known fact about Neil Diamond. Norm does impressions of Robert Goulet, Zero Mostel and Arthur Godfrey There’s mic trouble, audio trouble and operator error.

What was it about Arthurian legends that so captivated 1960s audiences? Depending on who's doing the retelling, and the century they're living in, the tales of King Arthur and his knights vary wildly from stodgy conservative fables, to shockingly taboo love triangles, to intriguing surrealistic sorcery. When Lerner and Loewe's play Camelot arrived on the scene in 1960 it quickly became a smash hit – an adaptation of T. E. White's Freudian-heavy text, it starred Richard Burton, Julie Andrews and put Robert Goulet on the map. Camelot was further imprinted onto the public consciousness in 1963 when, after the assassination of her husband, Jackie Kennedy went on record to say it was one of Jack's favorite soundtracks. In this episode, Bart and Jenna dive headfirst into a world of myth, magic, legend and a whole lot of jousting. As they weave their way through a series of largely mediocre films that seem like they should've been made for children – y'know, if it wasn't for all that nudity and violence – they look ever forward. Moving towards a shining ideal that they can see but cannot reach. For, like the Knights of the Round Table before them, they seek out the one true film that will unlock the truth and righteousness. A holy object that will single-handedly bring back the glory that was once known as… !!!The following films are discussed:• The Magic Sword (1962) Directed by Bert I. Gordon Starring Basil Rathbone, Estelle Winwood, Gary Lockwood• Lancelot and Guinevere (1963) Directed by Cornel Wilde Starring Cornel Wilde, Jean Wallace, Brian Aherne• Siege of the Saxons (1963) Directed by Nathan Juran Starring Janette Scott, Ronald Lewis, Ronald Howard• The Sword in the Stone (1963) Directed by Wolfgang Reitherman Voices by Rickie Sorensen, Sebastian Cabot, Karl Swenson• Willy McBean and his Magic Machine (1965) Directed by Arthur Rankin Jr. Voices by Larry D.
